As we all are aware, businesses have been operating at least at half capacity. Our server was nice, but, we were rushed through every phase of our experience and the place was pretty empty. The food was pretty plain. I knew I was getting a mediocre burger, at best, when I wasn't asked how I wanted it cooked. Freezer patty 100%. Oh yea, there was a pube in my girlfriends food. Not impressed at all with this place especially after hearing good things. Kitchen needs to step it up and waitress needs to take a chill pill. read more

Place has really gone downhill food wise. $16 for about a half cup of shaved steak, 2 eggs, some sauteed mushrooms and cheese sauce on a small plate of underdone hash browns, just terrible. $8 for a pancake and 2 strips of bacon. On a recent trip to Colorado, a friend introduced me to Vern's Place. We sat outside and the weather was AWESOME! The scenery was nice, too. FYI : For those who are allergic to bees, you MIGHT want to eat inside, because once the food showed up (especially the sweets), the bees made their presence VERY well known. I had a basic burger with cheese and hand cut fries. The burger was "ok," but that's about as glowing as I can get about the burger. The hand cut fries were GOOD. I wish the burger could've delivered the same type of reaction as the fries. I followed that up with strawberry shake. That was good, too, and there was a LOT of it! Well worth the $5.50! :) I'd go back, but I'd probably try to go back at dinner because the dinner menu sounded much better to me than what they had available for lunch. read more

Tonight it was mediocre at best, and we are so regular here that we even signed our marriage license on the patio 6 years ago. This was out first dinner since the "new" menu (it seemed mostly the same as the limited menu they've had true last couple of years. My husbands sirloin was cooked correctly, but was bland. The new green beans are smooshie canned beans with floppy bacon, which is super disappointing because the side of green beans used to be the one "fresh" (ish) thing on the menu. I generally like Vern's. Cinnamon roll - check. It is pretty good, and big. Try the krautburger for lunch... awesome, giant, and delicious. I had huevos rancheros this weekend and the problem was it wasn't hot. I mean temperature-wise. Tepid food is ick. Also, the over medium eggs were not over medium, way more on the easy side. If they hadn't been under the green chili I certainly would have sent them back. The service is very basic. We were offered plenty of coffee refills, which was nice, but you don't get a really personal touch from the waitstaff. I am fine with that, some people may not like it. I have never been treated rudely over the many (18+) years I have been going there, but perception of service does vary for the individual. I have never been there for dinner, only breakfast or lunch, and it is always busy and not just because of it's location. I purposefully drive from my home in Fort Collins, as do many many people I know. No it isn't fancy, it isn't high-class, but I would rather take my chances here than at Perkins or IHOP or Denny's. Love Verns, go there all the time! But, the gravy is inconsistent, sometimes sweet, sometimes savory. Definitely need to get that worked out. Other issue is the Homestead salad. It's a good salad but I have had it a few times and every time I have an issue with it. The lettuce isn't usually the best, there's always some that's wilted. Enjoy the taxidermy while you eat-in, or just head through the gift shop to the bakery counter in back to get what you really want -- a giant cinnamon roll (actually, I prefer the pecan rolls ...) I recommend stopping in after a day of hiking at Lory State Park or up the Poudre Canyon, when you feel like you've earned it. read more

Vern's is AMAZING. The service is always friendly and it's just a fun place to eat. I used to love drivng up to Vern's for a DELICIOUS cinnamon roll when I was a student at CSU. It is well worth the visit just for the the cinnamon rolls. 3.5 stars. An old-time convenience store and diner-like place with stuffed animals (taxidermy lovers should come here!) hanging from the walls and ceiling: bears, raccoons, cats. I wanted to be impressed but was underwhelmed and completely disappointed. Ordered an omelette with a cinnamon roll on the side. Waitress brought out the wrong omelette. I took a bite and flagged her down. She took it back. Brought me another one that had nothing but cheese, still not what I ordered. Couldn't find her, but found another waitress, I explained that this one was still incorrect and she replied with "who doesn't like a cheese omelette"? Uhhh well if I wanted a plain cheese omelette I'd have ordered it but that's not what I ordered. I gave up, asked for my check. Cinnamon roll was rock hard and it wasn't just me. The table next to mine sent their cinnamon rolls back as well, took a knife to cut them. Got the check. Still charged for an omelette I never got or ate. Found the waitress who accused me of getting free food, even though she returned the first one and the other waitress returned the second one that was wrong too. She calls over the second waitress who looks at me and says "yeah, she's picky." I guess expecting to get what I ordered (twice) is picky....beyond disappointing, do not recommend. read more

I love me some Vern's cinamon rolls! If you come to Vern's and don't try one, you haven't really eaten here. Forget Johnson's Corner and Silver Grill, this place has the best. They're hot, they're gooey, and oh so delicious! Oh yeah, they do serve other food, and the quality of that food is fine. Not great, not bad, just fine. But who cares...the rest of the menu is really just fluff to prepare your stomach for the awesome sweet gooeyness of their cinnamon rolls! (Actually, their breakfasts are pretty good too.) Service was good. Clientele was friendly. (Can you really review a restaurant for its clientele? I dunno, but we struck up a conversation with a friendly lady who lives up Rist Canyon and it only added to my enjoyment of the place.) Also, Vern's no longer serves breakfast all day, only until 2:00 pm. Treat yourself to Vern's either before or after a day of playing in the Poudre Canyon. You won't be sorry. read more

If you like iconoclastic local diners, this place is for you. As an added bonus, the food is very tasty! Vern's is decorated with more taxidermied animals than you can possibly imagine. The waitresses are friendly and fast, and the food is the stuff farmers and cowboys like: burritos, chicken fried steak, hot sandwiches, homemade pie and lots more. Sit at the front of the restaurant for a scenic view of the Rocky mountains and a local hay field. It's almost always somewhat busy here, but the hustling waitstaff keeps things moving along. Great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Edited to add: I strongly disagree with Jim S.'s assessment of their chicken fried steak. I'm always on the lookout for good CFS, and Vern's is fabulous. Tender and juicy on the inside with a thin super crisp batter, topped with homemade redeye gravy. Yum. read more

The three of us had been hiking in the mountains all day, so food was uppermost in our minds on the way home. I wanted a milk shake, while one of my friends wanted a steak. The "old fashioned milk shake" was delicious (although it could have used a little more vanilla), and my friend literally got a steak between two pieces of bread, which she really enjoyed. All three of us liked the fries, which looked to be homemade. (I assume my other friend liked her sandwich, but she didn't really say.) Was it the best food we'd ever had? No, not really, but it was exactly what we wanted at the time, and it was good and hearty. Inexpensive, too. read more

This was the worst French Dip sandwich I have ever had. The portion was tiny the beef was dry and over cooked. The au jus was terrible bitter just not good. The coleslaw was bland and had no taste. The fries however were delicious and the service was good. read more

I wish that I could give a no star rating because that's what a place like this deserves. Actually it doesn't even belong in business. If you, a family member or friend has a disability- totally boycott this place. I was denied entrance due to a medical condition, that I had a written doctors medical release for and offered to give to the host to read. He said that he did not care and I told him that per the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that he can't discriminate against anyone for a documented medical issue. He again replied that I was not entering and that he didn't care. If anyone questions this, after the first refusal to enter I began to video our exchange because it was so unbelievable to me that a business would do this. I am seriously thinking of pursuing legal action against such a blatant discriminate business. read more

3.5 stars Vern's Place is located on the site of a stage coach stop in Laporte, Colorado. It is a restaurant, gift shop, gas station and fishing/hunting license buying kind o'place. It is next door to Vern's Liquors and Vern's Trailer Park. I'm pretty sure there is no more "Vern", but his/her name lives on. The building is wood outside with inside wood paneling in that comforting roadside diner way. Outside there are bears carved into the front pillars and inside there are stuffed birds, fish and other critters lining a shelf near the ceiling and a mounted fish with a tail that waves around when you clap that superseded the drug store version that always shows up around Christmas by many years. They are known for their plate-sized cinnamon rolls and breakfast is served all day -- all manner of eggs, porky goodness, biscuits and gravy, potatoes, etc. Hikers, bikers (both kinds), campers, skiers and wanderers all find their way into Vern's and it can get quite crowded. Even completely full, the service was friendly and pretty fast. I'm not sure you have many other choices for breakfast in Laporte, but as long as Vern's is there, you will be well fed. read more

Breakfast at Vern's on a Sunday morning...prompt, friendly service and nice size portions. The bacon moved it from 3.5 stars to 4 as it was thicker than the paper thin bacon found at other diners close by. The decor is interesting with stuffed trophy heads and other animals after a visit to the taxidermist....including one very surprised looking mountain lion. Up in Laporte CO there's a nice place to eat. Country food at a reasonable price. I came here for lunch and was fully satisfied. Their steak sandwich had ribeye sliced on the thick side. Cooked medium rare and had just the right amount of seasoning a ribeye should have. I had the onion rings and home made coleslaw. The rings were cooked perfect and came out hot. The coleslaw was good too. The waitress was excellent, friendly, new the menu and not pushy. I saw Vern's have home made cinnamon buns and I got four. I needed two bags for them.
