I took my baby into the e.r for shallow and labored breathing. While the place was huge and clean, I did appreciate the quickness that my dog was seen given his crucial circumstance- they took him right away. I entered the establishment around 9am and didn't leave until sometime in the afternoon. My baby had a provisional diagnosis of chf and was prescribed medication to help him. We were given multiple options of how we wanted to proceed which is nice. We ended up choosing to have him come home on outpatient meds and had some X-rays done. I'm not gonna lie--this place is pricey and the way they do things is...interesting. We opted to get our medications within the community rather than through the e.d directly and the e.d doctor we worked with, Dr. Jacob Fischer, was kind. However, there was an incident which made me a little frustrated and not trust this place when the doctor wrote the script for the medications and when we went to get them filled at an outside pharmacy, the dosage that the doctor wrote was incorrect. Dr. Fischer wrote for a 1.5mg dosage when he meant to write 2.5mg dosage. Thankfully, the pharmacy tech at the outside pharmacy recognized this error as they didn't carry 1.5mg tablets for that particular medication, only 1.25mg, 2.5mg and 5mg. The pharmacy tech called the e.d and spoke to Dr. Fischer to gain clarification in which Dr.Fischer confirmed that he meant to prescribe 2.5mg rather than 1.5mg. Learning that Dr. Fischer made this mistake was alarming because I am paying this place for their services and if they are prescribing medication that would potentially save my baby's life then I would hope and actually assume that the doctor would be doing his job correctly because guess what? If it's incorrect, it could have cost my puppers his life. Thank God for the community pharmacy technician catching this error. Otherwise, I am grateful for the medications that were prescribed for my baby as they are helping him but I am not happy with the error that was done by the e.r physician. Maybe they need to give more critical cases to more seasoned veterinarians who have more experience on all forefronts instead of those who just graduated veterinarian school from 2023 and more recently. Allowing more seasoned veterinarians to work on critical cases like my baby's can ensure that our animals are properly taken cared of and the mediations that are prescribed to them are done so accurately. The pharmacy tech who took care of my baby, I forgot her name but she was amazing. She was the one who had told me to check out other places in the community for his medication because you could definitely get it cheaper than what they charge there and I love that. This techs heart was definitely in the right place. The receptionists in the front were decent but at times, it seems like they were more interested in talking to each other instead of taking care of those that were walking in. For those of you who would like to go here, they do have a plethora of services but i would definitely do your research. Again, I am grateful that they were able to take care of my baby but as for follow up care, I think I will be sticking with our normal vet. Please enter this establishment at your own risk and don't say i didn't warn you.

Wonderful Staff but Lacking Safety Protocols. On 11/1/24 we brought our dog Tyson to VSC as he was unable to hold down food. Our primary vet had seen him earlier in the day, taken an X-ray, & recommended VSC for a same-day ultrasound. The staff at VSC was friendly & conveyed a genuine focus on helping him. The ultrasound was completed w/no conclusive findings, so we were provided w/meds, bland diet instructions, & sent home. The attached pic of Tyson was during the ride back. The following Monday, we returned as he was still unable to hold down food. VSC took a 2nd x-ray. Afterward, we were informed Tyson bit the vet tech during the process. They said it was one puncture wound which likely occurred as they had to hold him in uncomfortable positions to obtain the x-rays. The x-rays revealed his esophagus was 4x the size it should be. Tyson was admitted & received treatment for mega esophagus, which included medications along with attempts at using a Bailey chair in the hopes that this would enable him to successfully transfer food to his stomach. The following day, a doctor at VSC informed us the meds & Bailey chair were not successful & they were going to try a different med, but if that didn't work, the next options would be much more difficult & invasive (surgery). Given his age & the fact he had been struggling with other health issues for some time (high liver values & suspected Cushings), we agreed euthanasia would be the most humane option if the other meds didn't work. It was at this point that the doctor shared that because the bite incident had been reported to the County & it occurred less than 10 days ago, if we decided to euthanize, they would be required to remove Tyson's head & send it to a lab so his brain could be tested for rabies. She apologized for having to inform me of this & said VSC could lose their license if they did not abide by this requirement. She said we could obtain & choose the disposition for the rest of Tyson's remains, but not his head as the lab would not be able to return it. I informed her Tyson was current on his rabies vaccine & she explained the 10 day observation period is for all dogs regardless of vaccination status. She added that while they were "100% certain" Tyson didn't have rabies, they must abide by this requirement or could lose their license. Here's my question: Since the following was known: 1. Tyson was an old dog in a strange environment 2. He had been unable to hold down food for several days 3. The needed x-rays would require staff to place him in uncomfortable positions Why weren't any safety protocols in place to prevent the risk of a bite from occurring, such as the use of a muzzle or bite resistant gloves? Unfortunately, the second round of meds didn't work & a day later we had to say our final goodbyes to Tyson. Thank you to the staff at VSC for their compassion on that incredibly difficult day. You were wonderful. The following day, I asked VSC to contact the lab on our behalf to request the return of Tyson's remains. VSC replied that the lab agreed to send their portion of his remains to the crematory once they completed their testing, however, to expect this process to take some time. Every day since, I check my email to see if there is an update from the crematory so that we can bring Tyson back home. The waiting is preventing my family & I from being able to work through the grieving process & obtain needed closure. VSC is in many ways an excellent animal hospital with a wonderful staff committed to providing exceptional care. However, due to the absence of safety protocols described above, I cannot provide them with a positive review. I will update this to a positive review if VSC commits to implementing steps & PPE measures recommended by the NIH & AVMA to minimize the risk of their staff being bitten so that no other pet owners have to face the situation we find ourselves in today. Our memory of Tyson will forever be marred by this tragic yet preventable event. Gary Earnest

I am incredibly grateful for the exceptional care my dog Lola received at the Veterinary Specialty Center under Dr. Mimi Noonan and her tech, Kathryn. When we first brought Lola in January 2021, she was in very bad shape, and our local vet was unable to diagnose the issue. Dr. Noonan quickly identified a complex condition and started treatment. Although her initial prognosis was 3-6 months, she advised us to cherish each day. Lola stabilized by April 2021 and went on to live another four wonderful years. Eventually, Lola developed Trachea Collapse and Syncope fainting spells, which sadly led to the difficult decision to euthanize her. Kathryn, who had become so dear to us, waited past the end of her workday to be with us during this heartbreaking time. I cannot express enough gratitude for the care this practice, Dr. Noonan, and Kathryn provided over the last four years. The kindness Kathryn showed by holding my hand as I said my final goodbye to my best friend and loyal companion meant the world to me. I would give them 100 stars if I could!

Overall, I would highly recommend VSC for anyone needing a specialist or emergency care for their pet. The advanced technology, equipment and training give you almost immediate answers for your pets health. Bella my BFF needed a specialist as her breathing was extremely rapid even at rest. My vet had already ruled out blastomycosis and pneumonia, but unable to determine further after x-rays & blood work that her lungs were not working properly, & needed further testing however only appointment was in June. I never had any indication that she was ill or anything else was possibly wrong prior to her vet visit on March 25. Her BW showed minor inconsistencies and we re-ran tests plus a couple specific and X-rays. The only indication I had was her breathing started becoming very labored and fast shortly after vet appointment . . prior health over the years had bouts of chronic pancreatitis and colitis which were always treated immediately..never showed any signs that anything else was wrong. Bella was getting worse with her breathing & my vet made arrangements to have her seen immediately through the ER at VSC. Dr. Fayth Kim was very caring and understanding and treated Bella like her own pet. VSC runs the numbers for you ahead of time so you know what types of charges you are looking at and helps you understand what tests are needed initially and what may be extra if further analysis is necessary and it's accurate. Unfortunately after ultrasounds and BW it was determined Bella had cancer that metastasized not only to 3/4 of her lungs, but also the heart, kidneys, liver, intestines, stomach, and bladder, and lymph nodes ...basically to every internal organ. Everyone from receptionists, vet techs scribe, & the vets were patient and asked numerous times if there was more questions.. I felt all cared deeply that you understood your pets issues along with treatment options. Bellas remaining time on earth was very limited and VSC home hospice program along with fluid support from my vet gave us the means to keep Bella comfortable at home hospice for 11 days until Bella showed she had enough on a Sunday evening.. we took her into VSC ER and even though short staffed and full with emergencies, they were still very compassionate and caring and supportive. Both visits the vet techs were wonderful and very caring... I wish I had gotten their names.very grateful to them. They were amazingly calming especially on the night. I had to let my sweet Bella go to the Rainbow Bridge while she lay on my lap. Dr. Kylie Sobota eased my BFFs pain and sent my angel Bella to the Rainbow Bridge so she no longer had to suffer. The mortuary VSC partners with to entrust your beloved pet to is wonderful as well. While this is a very hard personal loss, and we are still devastated by the sudden onset, worsening of her disease, and her loss; both my vet and VSC helped us understand the severity of Bella's illness, how to best help and support her and to know I made the right choice in my decision to release her from suffering further. PS : Previously, I have been a client @ VSC in 2010/12for my yorkie Shamus and in the late 1990s a couple times for my mother's vizsla Freddy. Only once with Freddy was there a minor issue and it was promptly rectified. Dr Claude Gendreau was the founder of VSC in Riverwoods/Buffalo Grove at that time. Dr Gendreau, Dr Noonan, Dr Feinmahl & Dr Armentano came highly recommended from Dr Richard Blazer of MVC & Northlake AH.

I feel for all the people who had bad experiences @ VSC. I ended up there only because I'll never go to Blue Pearl again due to their "care" for my previous dog. All I can attest to is my experience @ VSC & Dr. Bagheri (neurology) was wonderful with both King (10 yr old Malinois/Boxer Mix) & I when we showed up there to get her opinion of King after a vaccine injury the year previous & his disoriented, sad, confused & exhausted tendencies. Dr. Bagheri dealt with his exam and my questions with astonishing honesty & compassion & handled our goodbye moments delicately & professionally that very day. She didn't try to upsell or make promises she couldn't keep & is very good at her job. Thanks Dr. Bagheri. See you down the road King. You're a good boy.

I'm writing this review with a heavy heart and a warning to all pet owners: avoid Veterinary Specialty Center at all costs. My experience here with my English Bulldog, Eddy, was nothing short of a nightmare that ended in his premature death. Eddy went inn for routine surgery and died less than 48 hours after discharge. The postoperative care Eddy received was dangerously inadequate. Despite Eddy showing clear signs of pain and distress, his symptoms were continuously ignored or trivialized by the staff. He was brought inn 2x in 24 hours and concerns were dismissed as anxiety. Communication was disastrous. We were misled about Eddy's condition, the risks were never clearly communicated, and our repeated pleas for comprehensive treatment were dismissed. It felt like they were more interested in minimizing their efforts and costs rather than saving my dog's life. This clinic's lackadaisical approach and blatant disregard for our concerns directly contributed to the loss of Eddy. They failed him miserably, and no pet owner should have to go through what we did. If you love your pet, do not take them to this facility. After all this they still call me and email me weekly for $600 after receiving $9000+ without knowing how he died (they claim that's on me for not paying for a necropsy) and the $600 bill turned into a $2000+ bill. $1798 in April when he died 2/22! No contact from admins as promised but billing dept has no problem calling and emailing even texting for payment!

They were nice here, willing to help you with whatever you need... that is until you ask them to work with you on finances. Our cat needed to stay overnight, but we could not afford the cost and got declined by care credit. We asked if they could work with us and basically said no and that we needed to take our cat back home with us. They suggested a university to take her to. If you don't have the money they can care less about you and your pet. Some great veterinary disservice this is. 2 stars because they were nice to start with. read more

I couldn't have been more pleased with the service and treatment my beagle, Leena has received from VSC. It was her 2nd time in January. Leena, a food aggressive beagle had a party eating chocolate, peppermint candy and Chicago Mix popcorn, wrappers and all.. This resulted in a case of pancreatitis for which she was hospitalized. She was one sick little lady. The entire staff is very courteous and professional, from administration to medical staff. The calls I received giving progress updates were extremely helpful and definitely served to calm my anxiousness. I would recommend VSC without question. read more

I love my cats and when I got them I also realized that someday they might need medical care, which comes with the responsibility of being a pet owner. This place is expensive but when you see the large staff and variety of Vets they have on staff, you can understand why they need to charge what they do. Anyone that complains about money should not have a pet or get insurance. Animals are living things not toys for our pleasure - if you don't want to pay dont get one! Positives: Excellent choices of Internal Medicine Doctors, Cardiologists, and Vet staff. Dr. Vargo was my cats Internal Medicine Dr. and she was great! Smart - helpful and caring. As well as the surgeon - Dr. Ablin. Negatives: You can call anytime for help, but do not expect to get a Dr. to respond, you will get a tech or nurse and sometimes they don't seem confident in their answers to your questions, leaving you uneasy. If your pet is very sick and can not be brought to a room for visitation, you are not allowed to see them for very long - this was heartbreaking to me. Neutrals: Most of the staffing was very nice but there were exceptions, like with anything - the first night my cat had a male nurse - David and he was very rude. Staff is large so expect some people who work there to work - not because they love animals. All in all there are not alot of Internal Medicine Vets around my area, had I gone to Dr. Vargo first, I may have saved my cat the surgery and the unpleasant experience of not being at home. I would go back to her in a heartbeat and trust her with full confidence. read more

While I do believe they give good care - plan to wait a long time to be seen by the vet. I arrived at 7:00pm on Wednesday night and my dog wasn't seen by the vet until 9:30. They said there were 3 vets on staff that night and there were 5 cases that came in after me - all were seen before me. I understand that more critical cases come first - but but I don't think all 5 were more critical than mine and absolutely no acknowledgement that I was waiting 2 1/2 hours. Next time I'll take the ride to Golf Rose in Schaumburg. read more

My GSD ate onions. FYI onions are toxic for cats and dogs. Was in a complete panic at home. They were so helpful over the phone, just very calming, not rushed or half answers to my rambling questions. The visit exceeded my expectations. The techs knew exactly how to handle my doge and were super impressive with communication and feedback to my animal and she relaxed so quickly after being tense and fidgety during the short wait. The doctor was outstanding, I'll mention the name in a second review after I review my paperwork for her name, but she knew exactly what steps to follow and confidently assured me of the process and options we have based on my dogs current condition. It's important to note, if your dog ate onions, at what pace the onions were eaten over the course of intake, what time it happened, and the quantity of onion intake to compare data to the animals body weight and determine current or possible level of toxicity. This can be treated early, aka with vomit inducing actions and, depending on situation, second step to line the stomach and decrease and/or eliminate the digestion of the harmful N-propyl disulfide. That is the principle in onions and it binds to Red Blood Cells causing inability for those RBC's to carry the oxygen throughout the body. The body now thinks the RBC's are invaders and starts destroyed those RBC's. The more red blood cells killed, the less oxygen through your pet's body- hence, onions toxic to dogs and cats. We decided the plan of action together and I was very relieved and felt understood by the doctor and all of the techs that were recruited. They even let me stay with my dog and they worked well to build trust with us. The place was very sanitary AND all dogs throughout the building seemed to be quiet and calm due to the great work the staff puts in for the animals. They are all prepared and have amazing animal manners. Like I said, exceeded my expectations and I trust them enough to go back. read more

THE UNFORTUNATE DEMISE OF OPIE November 22, 2018 I brought my 3 year mini schnauzer Opie to VSC - Opie had bladder stones and a common problem with small breed dogs a Shunt. This caused Opie to have to straining to urinate. I checked him in and asked who is the best Doctor that could perform this surgery I was told Dr. Robbins - I asked if he would be available and was told he would be. Monday Nov 19 we were called at home by Dr. Robbins at around 4pm Assessment: Bladders stones removed and Shunt was banded. Opie looks great and is dong well post PSS ligation. This is great news. Prognosis (Good) - Complications (None) In 6 months Opie will be back to normal .He will be monitored in the hospital for an additional 24 hours for seizures and hypoglcemia. As long as no concerns are noted we will likely be able to discharge Opie tomorrow - Nov 21 - picked up Opie and brought him home - throughout the evening Opie had no interest in eating or drinking water - and straining to urinate. At around 11:30pm Opie had a Grand Mal Seizure fell down on his side paddling with all 4 legs - foaming at the mouth. Called VSC and told them what had happened so we drove up to Buffalo Grove, IL -arrived at 1am talked to Dr. Todd Ryl he weighed Opie in at 15.6528lbs - which at that time was correct. Opie now has Dr. Kathleen Kimball attending him with a new weigh of 19.8416lbs? Was suppose to receive at call at around 9am no call I called at 10am - I talked to Dr. Kimball -told me she was extremely busy and not a lot of time to talk this makes the incorrect weigh understandable. I asked about Opie condition said not good - Seizures and twitching- I am now concern he is now blind. Prognosis is (Guarded) and Seizures can not be controlled - we have a risk of a worsening prognosis and also has pressure on his brain - we will try treating him with Valium, Propofol, increase his Keppra dose, switching to IV Antibiotic, Lactulose Enema, and Mannitol but we are still having these episodes. Next step Propofol CRI and at the point he would need to be intubtated. His prognosis right now is guarded. but if he gets to the point where he would need Propofol CRI then his prognosis would drop further and then run a risk of a worsening prognosis. Also now besides having Seizures, Blindness, Hepatic Encephalopathy, (Which is Brain Disorder Caused by Liver Disease) - Liver Disease and (ETC) which means all the rest included (ETC is noted in medical report) November 22, 2018 Thanksgiving Day In Dr. Kimball told me it seems strange that Opie would have a Seizure at home - also she did not like a word I used which was (Misled) by Dr. Robbins in his earlier Assessment of Prognosis Good and No Complications. She also told me that I said this was an overall financial burden of endeavor and she does not make any guarantee's. When I saw Opie in a Child Playpen having a Grand Mal with nothing being done with others standing around and she told me she did not have a lot time to talk due so many patients she had to attend to. I had in first taking Opie to get over a $ 1,000.00 in laboratory work - prior to being him to VSC - and over $ 7,400.00 at VSC - and having to make a hard and a humane decision on having him euthanized for additional charge but they threw the cardboard box in - on the November 22, 2018 Thanksgiving Day I was burying my beloved pet Opie in my backyard. The very tragic things Opie had to heal from his pain and suffering from his surgery - now having other issues he never had before - like Seizures - Blindness - Hepatic Encephalopaty, and Liver Disease. And at the very end of life still not able to urinate without straining. For two weeks I tried calling Dr. Robbins left messages with staff - receptionist - his secretary - his voicemail - Certified Letters to him and others all received and signed no one would call back or talked to me. I was looking for questions to be answered - but when you avoid calls and certified letters you have answers, We all make mistakes in life - unfortunately I made the wrong choice in letting someone take my dogs life. From Complications (None) - on Nov 19 - In Complications (ETC) Which means all the rest included. on Nov 22. read more

Wow, with the reviews I read, I was terrified to take my Loki here. However, our experience was AMAZING. Our 12 week old pug was found to have a minor heart murmur. Our regular vet referred us immediately to Veterinary Specialty Clinic, just to be sure it was not more serious. We saw Dr. Ashley Jones in Cardiology. So lucky to have ever met her. I hope we don't have to go back, but if we do I know Loki will be in good hands! Dr. Jones was very caring and I really am happy we met her! Thank you!!!! read more

In general I leave reviews on business only if I LOVED or hated my experience with them. Let me tell you that my experience with VSC was way above the 5 stars, it was a 10 stars experience. Veterinary specialist center was recommend to me by my behaviorist vet as my dog Floyd was still limping after a ACL surgery in sept 2016 (we are in April) my dog had at another clinic (Medvets). My dog is a 115lbs mastiff/pit mix who has fear agression issues that we are managing with training, medication and lowering as much as possible any possible stress or triggers. One of the triggers is to be touched by strangers. He lunge and bark and due to his size he is very impressive. Medvets simply screw up and were very arrogant (Dr Prink) and made some stupid comments about Floyd's behaviors (we have a very strict protocole with him and they were aware about it as it was his 3rd visit and the 2 first one went well- on the 3rd occasion they didn't follow the protocol and blame it on me and Floyd (He has oral sedation that I give him, and he is muzzled at all time) and after a very annoying messed up visits, my behaviorist recommended me to go to VSC. I was welcomed by the most awesome team of vets. The staff was very companionate about Floyd's behaviors and respectful. The Dr West was really knowledgeable and approach on my dog issue was more to really find what was the issue instead of planning an unnecessary surgery. We left the clinic relaxed and with a plan to make sure Floyd recovers fast. Thank you VSC you won our business. read more

I really appreciated how quickly they were able to get me in for an appointment for my puppy. they had a cancellation and got me in the next day. So their service to that point is good. I saw Dr. Cirabassi for behavioral consultation. Personally I am not a fan. I paid through the nose. He didn't come off very pet friendly nor like-able (especially by my puppy who instantly hid from his view when he entered the room, as opposed to the assistant who she did not hide from immediately). How are you a behavioral specialist and not pet friendly? He didn't interact with her at all. I was told information I already knew. Certainly felt like a waist of my time and my money. When I brought up alternative medicines I was shot down really fast for it all being "hearsay" but then when I asked about the meds for my puppy later he admitted it was all just 'hearsay" based on adult dogs and there was nothing about puppies. Personally a good specialist would be knowledgeable in all options for your pet, be upfront and honest with you, go over all the side-effects, and go with the best safest approach, especially for puppies! I shouldn't have to go home and do all the research myself. SSRI meds are not FDA approved for animals. So I guess big pharma profits more in the end. There are a lot of side effects as well that I wasn't made fully aware of. I wouldn't go to him as a behavioral specialist for your pet. I went to him cause I was referred by my vet since he was board certified. For someone who is board certified he certainly didn't seem to be up to date and well rounded in the field. Told me to find someone else with "alternative" knowledge if that is what I am looking for.... read more

Exceptional. My dog had the TPLO surgery for a torn CCL. Dr. West and all of the staff were amazing. It was such a great experience every step of the way. The facility is sparkling clean and managed efficiently. Well worth the money. There are cheaper procedures out there with a longer, more painful recovery and higher percentage of arthritis developing in the joint. We chose the TPLO for this reason and went with VSC because of their outstanding reputation. read more

I've been staying in Lake County taking care of my elderly parents. My cat woke me up in the middle of the night crying and trying to use her litter box. She is old and has multiple issues. I looked for an emergency vet and the one nearby had terrible Yelp reviews so I decided to drive an extra 15 minutes down to Veterinary Specialty Center. From the time I called them on the phone to the time they brought her back to my car they were all so kind and friendly. Doctor Noto explained everything he was doing and everything he thought and ask for my agreement before proceeding. He performed an ultrasound and a very thorough exam, plus tried to get a urine sample using needle aspiration. I figured an emergency visit in the middle of the night on a weekend with all of that would cost hundreds. I was so grateful when I heard they were only going to charge me for the emergency visit. (I have been laid off for over a year.) It only cost me $160 to make sure my 20 year old cat was going to be okay! I can't recommend them enough. read more

My dog couldn't walk when i brought in him. It was the scariest thing i have ever had to experience. He was diagnosed correctly, given the proper medication and treatment and he we are today, 3 weeks later and my pup in well on his way to recovery without surgery. I would not take my dog any place else. I trust this hospital and know that when my dog is here he is being treated the best way possible. Thank you for all your hard work. read more

Our 5 year old dachshund presented with a severe back problem almost overnight. Dr. Comito and her team provided us with a variety of options and possible outcomes for each. The center went over pricing and payment options before any procedures were done. On the day of surgery I got multiple updates from the nurses and doctors updating me of the progress and keeping the family informed. They have visiting hours post op and we could call at any time to check in on our dog. The price ended up being less than estimated and the care was second to none. Our dachshund has made a full recovery and we are very grateful for this hospital. I would highly recommend their service, care, and professionalism. read more

What can we say, they've saved the life of our four legged cat boy twice. The care here by everyone is exceptional, caring and immediate when required. We saw Dr.Camito and she was very professional and knowledgeable. She diagnosed our dog pretty accurate no problems with her .Even though when you call with question you always get technician that try's to help . But after you insist you can get Dr.Camito But what I am More disappointed about we brought our English Bulldog who had brain tumor and was declining in deep sleep . His brain and nervous system gave up before his heart . I don't remember the name of the Vet but to be honest I never met such unkind , unprofessional person . She was offering us to opearate on our dog that was half dead . When I asked if she read his chart and was she aware of his diagnosis. Her answer we can still try . Try what ??? My disappointment is that in this kind of cituatuon Vet was trying to rip us off and performe surgery on dog that was barely here .Never again my foot would step into this facility . Big time rip off . read more

Great care, poor communication when pet is being evaluated and treated. They should work on improving the status updates. My example--our dog was in for an emergency and they admitted him. I left and called back late afternoon, was told they'd get back to me when they could which is understandable however, when I asked about a time frame, they told me that they couldn't give one and would have to wait. 4 hours later, no call so called again and got an update. Called the next morning and couldn't get basic information on his condition so while the care is great, the communication during the evaluation and process isn't and should be improved, especially for the prices they charge. read more

My experience with VSC has been overwhelmingly positive and I would highly recommend it for anyone requiring emergency services for their pets. Unfortunately, my dog suffered a ruptured disc causing his hind legs to become paralyzed a few weeks ago. I bought him over to VSC based on the recommendation of my dog's vetinerarian office for their 24 hour emergency services. He was seen by an ER doctor in 20 minutes and was given an MRI and surgery in the same day. Can't really tell you whether I was robbed blind by the prices coz I have nothing to compare it to but all I can say is that everybody from the front desk, to the nurses, to the techs, to the doctors, to the surgeons were extremely professional, knowlegeable, competent and compassionate and I couldn't be more thankful. I was given updates before and after every procedure, everybody took the time to patiently answer all of my questions. Also, my dog had to stay overnight for 2 nights and they allowed me to call any time of the day or night to check up on how he was doing. It was extremely stressful but I always felt reassured because of the excellent care and communication of the amazing staff at VSC (my husband now wants to know whether they'll accept human patients because it's better than the care that we've seen at any human hospital). Anyway, my dog is back home and is no longer in pain and is able to walk. During his 5 weeks home, I've had to take him back to VSC because of problems with his catheter, suture removal, catheter removal and a follow up from the surgeon. Again, everyone was very kind and professional and I am so grateful and thankful to everyone at VSC for bringing my dog back to health. read more

I am shocked anyone would give this place a good review...the staff were good, everything else was a disaster. The place is a gross money gouge, preying on folks in desperate situations. 2k surgery at near every other vet, can cost 8-10k at this place. It's all about the money. We spent 2k just for IV, and xrays then got a bill for 8 k for surgery....that would cost 1-2k at every other vet. We lost our family pet due to corporate greed. We had no choice as no other vet was available at the time due to a weather emergency that closed the city for days. Will never go back here, unless things are dire and I am stuck. This place personifies corporate greed, the pets suffer in the end. read more
I brought my dog here after taking him to an ER visit at Bluepearl. The staff here is extremely friendly. I had scheduled my pup for a MRI with Dr. Comito, which was what the doctor at Bluepearl recommended since he was having some spinal issues. Dr. Comito gave him a pretty thorough checkup and she came to the conclusion that he was doing pretty well recovering on his own. She said that she didn't want to waste our time or money on a MRI when he clearly didn't need one. She sent him home a happy camper and right away sent me a personal email with a summary of our visit. Great hospital and great doctor! read more

They don't care about your pet, they only care about their "compensation" per Dr. Noonan's words. After I spent thousands on my dog and had follow up blood work done at my local vet, per their instructions, I was told it was unfair for her to review the results without compensation. That is terrible practice in my opinion and very disheartening. I would choose otherwise to make sure that your pet is cared for as a loved one, and simply doesn't have a price tag on their head. read more

The purpose of Yelp to post your opinion to try & help others make decisions. 5 of my posts are actually POSITIVE reviews, & 2 are negative. I would feel dishonest if I did not post EXACTLY what happened to the best of my ability. VSC is so UNPROFESSIONAL that they contacted my vet after my review to have him call me & ask to take my review off of YELP. That doesn't seem like a very honest thing to do. Apparenly they told my vet they were going to call me to ask me to remove my review, (again very unprofessional). So, who knows how many other people posted negative reviews about VSC & were pressured to remove them? Again, the PURPOSE of Yelp is for people to share their experiences, positive or negative, with other people. read more

We had the most amazing experience at VSC. The doctors, nurses and entire staff are miracle workers with huge hearts and expertise beyond belief. We noticed a rash on our dog and initially took our dog to BluePearl. We had used BP in the past and thought we were getting a good level of care. They completely misdiagnosed her - they found zero platelets in her blood but said it wasn't a huge concern. Luckily our family vet saw us the next day and told us this was a dire emergency and to take her to VSC immediately. When we got to VSC we realized how wrong we were about BluePearl. We were kept updated several times a day and when we called anytime (and yes, there were several calls we made after midnight) we got to speak with the nurse that was handling the case. Most importantly, our dog was given the best care. After 3 days of not responding to treatments, the VSC team kept aggressively trying to keep our dog alive...and it finally worked. A week later she is back home and is well on the path to a full recovery. The scary thing is that if we got to VSC a few hours later or followed the suggestion of BluePearl, our dog would have died. The stressful days our dog was at VSC we were able to visit her, heard honest assessments of her condition and her demeanor. Every time we visited, it's obvious that the entire team treated her as if she was their pet. They knew her funny quirks and personality and her background and treatments. We felt entirely at ease that she was receiving the best care possible. And for the first time, our dog didn't seem to mind being at the doctor's office. We can't thank the team at VSC, including Doctor Noonan, Doctor Ghantous, Francesca, Ashley and all the incredible folks that brought our dog back to us. THANK YOU!!! read more

I was given a quote for my cat's salivary gland surgery over the phone of $2600 - $3200. That sounded a little high to me, but I scheduled the surgery. When I got there, the quote went up by $1000 for a bunch of other services (which I later found out from the other hospital that ultimately did the surgery were completely unnecessary). After becoming *very* angry by the sudden $1000 change in price (she told us that the quote over the phone was only for the surgery, and didn't include all of the other "needed" services), I went to breakfast and started calling other hospitals while I was waiting for my food. I received a quote of $1300 from Care Animal Hospital in Arlington Heights (I had used them before), and I scheduled the surgery with them instead. I picked up my cat and paid the bill for the services that had already been provided. When I got the surgery done at Care, the final bill was less than $100 over that (taxes and a 2-week antibiotic accounted for the very small increase). Overall, a very frustrating and unpleasant experience. If they thought that I would be "stuck" paying whatever they decided to tack onto the bill when I arrived just because I had gone to the trouble of bringing my cat, they were *very* wrong. Needless to say, I won't be a future customer. read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. They saved my dog's life, really. So I am forever grateful to them for this. I am for the next seven years of my life, still going to be paying for that. My dog is worth it, she is. I just think this place needs to be a little better at their delivery methods. Contessa's abdomen was filled with blood and her kidneys were failing and, at first, nobody could tell for sure what was wrong with her. Our regular vet told us she had run out of options and said we needed a specialist so she sent us here. After three days of tests we learned that she had contracted Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick. We were told that at the high end the cost to save her would be near 10,000.00. My father was with me when I was given this number and I think he still doesn't get why I signed the ok to go ahead with treatment. We almost lost her, we did. I watched as she gained over 30 pounds in fluid weight, stopped eating altogether, could no longer stand on her own and at one point seemed to lose will to live. Somehow she pulled through. On the day I went to pick her up and take her home I was first given instruction on how to administer fluids subcutaneously and how to give her 35 different meds at five different intervals a day. The assistants here are amazing; especially Jamie and Shane. I went to settle up the bill and was give two large packets. I saw two totals; one for $5,000.00 and one for $7,000.00. "What's my total?" I asked the girl behind the desk. "Oh, you have to add them up, it's around $12,000.00." "What? $12,000.00? Where's the 5,000.00 I gave you last week?" "That's been accounted for" My knees went weak and I thought I was going to need medical assistance. I'm not just saying that to be funny, my knees literally went weak. "But...I....I don't have that kind of money" "We accept credit cards." I was paying this girl's salary, I suddenly realized. "I charged the last payment. Do you know what kind of interest I'm going to have to pay on $17,000.00? Who can afford to charge that kind of bill to a credit card?" I heard whispering among those in the rather large, very slickly decorated waiting room. "They need to get counselors out here for this sort of thing." They do. They really do. She offered me a new credit card application, bless her heart, so that I could pay my bill and be off to force feed my dog meds. My dog is worth it, my dog is worth it, my dog is worth it... I have found out since then that it is illegal to hold a pet until the owner pays a bill in full. I never had to fill out that stupid credit card application and later take out a home equity loan to lower the interest. I could have just paid them in payments monthly and there was nothing they could do about it. Now I know how they afford that beautifull aquarium and the slick waiting room. read more

I was given a list of referrals from my dog's eye specialist VSC was one of the names on the list after reading all the Facebook, Yelp, and google reviews the consensus is the staff is rude and unhelpful. Well boy did I learn that today. I wrote a very detailed email going over all the steps we've taken thus far in his treatment and all the medications he's received. I asked a list of detailed questions...I will insert that part of my email and the response from the staff. Have any of the Internal Medicine Doctors treated a case that is this resistant to medication? When coming in for an assessment/appointment what test would they require to treat him? What should I expect to happen during his exam? Because of covid, I am aware that I will not be able to take him inside does the vet call me during the appointment, after the appointment, or will they assess what's going on call me to talk over my options and then go from there? Will the Doctor contacts the eye specialist before our appointment to go over the care he's received until now? Lastly, what are the expected cost of a visit with an Internal Medicine doctor? I chose to email because I know that these questions will take up a lot of time from the front desk and it's important to me to get all of the information up-front and I want nothing to be a surprise. If it is easier to talk over the phone I am available tomorrow all day and all weekend. I have attached a photo of Marley with his eyes at their absolute worse and how they are currently. Now here is the response from a nurse named Desiree....The consult fee to see an Internal Medicine doctor is $141. How our appointments work is that the technician speaks with you and then comes out and gets your pet from the car. The doctor will do an exam and then speak with you on the phone. After the discussion with the doctor, you will be resented with an estimate for the cost of procedures. So if you would like to make an appointment please call 847-459-7535 and speak with one of our coordinators to set up an appointment...So after reading the email response I was completely annoyed because one and a half questions got answered. I called the VSC this morning and got the "pleasure"( and I will use the term very loosely), to speak with Jorden. I told her how I spent a long time writing this email and I felt like none of my questions got answered. She then said I must be seeking medical advice and they won't answer questions without him being seen. I let her know I was not looking for medical advice I already know what's going on with his condition. I asked to speak with someone to help she said she could help me if I could give her the name of his condition. I said are you able to pull up my email because it's a lot to go over. She said no and at this point, the tone in her voice had changed from cheerful to short and rude. She said give me the name and I tell you if they can treat it. I then asked to speak with a manager, she informed me the manager Heather wasn't there and I could leave a voice mail. I then told her I would just rather not deal with them all together based on this small interaction. I did call back to tell Jorden that based on the events and how it was handled I would be leaving reviews. I'd like to also add to the staff and management that is reading this.. The other specialty office I was considering and had also emailed me back answering every question I had. They even offered to go over everything over the phone with me if I had any additional questions. If you are looking for a specialty vets office with a helpful staff my recommendation would be Lakeshore Veterinary Specialists! It's safe to say based on all the reviews I read about your staff being rude and unhelpful it's true. What a shame I was willing to look past that and have him be seen by the actual medical professionals. I'm sure the doctors that practice medicine want to help these animals, which would have been great. read more

You know, I wasn't going to review this place until I looked at the other reviewers and what they had to say. It seems like a lot of people had a similar experience to mine here. George Carlin once said that buying a pet is like buying a small tragedy. If you've been here, you've most likely been at or near the "tragic" part of pet ownership. Pets can tell you a lot of things like when they're happy or frightened or hungry or want to go outside. When they're sick and what's wrong with them is another story. You have to go to another human to figure out what's wrong, and you have to be able to trust that they will not take advantage of you in the process. There are so many things I wish people told you about owning a pet. Number one on the list is that the highest price of care does not necessarily equal highest quality of care. The doctors here are good at what they do, but they are too good if you know what I mean. If you don't know what I mean, let me explain. Some doctors know when to quit, when the pet's life is just too far gone by disease or age and should be put down. Others (perhaps with noble intentions, perhaps not) will try to extend the life of said pet through whatever means necessary. The doctors here, although good at what they do (hence 2 stars instead of one because despite everything they are still competent which counts) do not know when to say "when." This is something every pet owner needs, because a pet owner is not going to be able to objectively say, "Okay, my best friend can die now." Medical professionals should be able to do what they are licensed and paid to do and tell pet owners when pets have lost their quality of life. In so many reviews here I've seen the phrase "I'm torn..." followed by a discussion of how expensive the care is but how good of care they got. I don't disagree with these reviewers. Going in here, you need to expect to spend AT LEAST $1500 on your pet if it is a true life-threatening emergency. I didn't use caps lock on that out of anger, just as a forewarning. Another recurring phrase in other reviews here is "I was in tears" or something to that nature. I'm not going to lie, if you're here, your life and your pet's life has officially become agonizing. You might find yourself saying things like "Price is no object with my pet" or "I'll do anything to have my pet healthy again." That might be well and true for how you feel, but please do yourself a favor and read the other reviews here and think if taking out loans and dalliances with the Buffalo Grove Police Department (I am so sorry that happened to you, Patti S.!) is really worth a pet's life. Also be aware that there are NO PAYMENT PLANS offered here, even though many other vets know not everyone has thousands of dollars just kicking around waiting to be spent. Get real, VSC. In response to reviews you say you don't "take on the debt" of patients but there's quite a difference between paying for everyone and letting people pay in a much more reasonable fashion. As another tip, VSC, you might want to stop coming off as a robot when you respond to these reviews and stop referring to your business in the third person. "VSC believes...", "VSC maintains..." I don't care! If I wanted to read your mission statement I would seek it out. Tell me about what your staff members believe, what your doctors maintain. Your job on Yelp is to make yourselves more sympathetic to potential patients and you need to do a better job of that. Although you said in response to a review that all charges are fully explained before treatment is begun, you know that isn't the case. Every single charge on my $2800 bill was a complete surprise. Please do what you say you do and actually sit down and explain the charges before treatment is begun. Do not take advantage of frantic, heartbroken pet owners and bypass explanation. VSC, please retrain your reception staff. Pet owners are not bad people if they have questions about costs or want to speak to doctors about their pets. Reception staff should not make pet owners feel this way. Finally, VSC, you said that your costs are so high because the quality of care you provide is also just as high. Then riddle me this: why are there so many other veterinary offices that offer the same level of quality care for far less than your exorbitant costs? read more

I came here off a recommendation from my veterinarian. My dog has a staph infection on her ears which is a common diagnosis I have been told by several vets and dog owners. I am a new dog owner so I had no idea if it was common or not. My vet took her in the back and came back out and said "Yeah, it's not healing properly. You should set up an appointment with the Veterinary Specialty Center." Not knowing any better and obviously wanting the best for my dog I made an appointment. The staff is nice enough, but they were not so appreciative of my dog. Yes she is not fond of other dogs and gets bothered by them. Knowing this, I checked in with her on a very short leash right by my leg, and brought her to an area where there were no dogs! It is an open area so it's near impossible to find a space where my dog won't hear another dog. There were a couple kids running around which was making my dog uneasy, therefore she started barking. The staff at the front desk were looking at me and my dog like we were a bother and they wanted us gone. I'm sorry but if my dog were really annoying you that much, and you saw her surroundings were making her uncomfortable, maybe you should have placed us in a room where she would be calmer. Next, the technician that was helping us, was super nice. That's where the 1 star goes to! She was very kind to my dog and myself. My dog is also nervous with meeting strangers so she does bark until she warms up. I felt the technician and the doctor both handled her barking well by ignoring her until she calmed down. They put a mesh muzzle on her during examination which was fine because I would rather have that then my dog hurt someone for protecting herself. The exam was fine, as normal as it could be. What came next I didn't like so much. I felt as if the doctor was looking at me and playing on my emotions. I am a young dog owner, so he probably thought it was safe to assume I didn't know a lot about owning a dog. He, without asking (just said this is what we will do), said we will be running a culture today. I knew she was going to have to have that, but it would have been nice if it seemed a little less aggressive on his end (Dr. Ness?). I felt that he was after my money and not to make my dog better. He prescribed a gel and an antibiotic (once the culture results came in). I felt like they knew they were one of the only dermatology specialists in the suburb area so they could really dig into my pocketbook. It was safe to say, when I walked out of there I knew I would not be back. A-because of the service and pressures, and B-because of the price. The pricing of this place is through the roof. It is safe to say, more than half of that money you're paying is going right to making the building look better. It is $172 just to see a doctor which is absolutely ridiculous! Half the money I spent at that place was to see a doctor for less than 30 minutes. The other half was spent on tests, but overpriced tests! I walked out paying around $450.00 for about 30 minutes of consultation. Extremely disappointed in the prices that they make you pay because you want what's best for you dog. To top it all off, the doctor said that they most likely think a biopsy would be the next step when she comes back for her follow up (what a joke right? A follow up with these money hungry people?!). Not only would it be a biopsy, but it would be a pretty extensive one too. The lesions she has are on her ears, and they gave me a price of what that would cost. It would cost nearly $1000.00 (ummm, yeah right). I nearly laughed out loud and said 'You think I'm coming back to pay you guys more for that?!' Anyway, don't go here. They will recommend every test you will not need just to get your money. I am sure most people fall for it too because we just want our babies feeling better! Needless to say, I never went back. I found a vet who could do all tests needed for a dog at their own facility. The best part is, it is a fraction of the price. My new vet said she would have run the same kind of culture for my dog, and then she followed it up with 'I wish I could have done it. Would have saved you tons of time and money.' That's exactly when I was reassured the Veterinary Specialty Center was a scam and out for your money. DO NOT GO HERE!! I wish I could give it 0 stars! Keep your money and spoil your pets with other love and affection! read more

I find myself being torn. At one end, I want to say that they do everything they can to save your pet. On the other end, they do everything and then some to hike up their profit and not for the benefit of your pet. 2 dog with serious diseases over 5 years. Over $25K between the two of them. The result..... 2 dead dogs who suffered longer than they should of due to the guidance and suggestion of VSC, and a lot of credit debt. My Setter was brought in about 5 years ago. He had a rash. Over the course of a month it would turn into what we only viewed as a skin eating disorder. Flesh falling off him in clumps. VSC says... "we can fix this." He had long term stay at the center and then home care in which we were to give him multiple medicated baths, medications, creams, and rest. He was suffering but VSC said he could come out of it. In the end, we put him to sleep at home. We just could not put him through that any more. He was 5 years old and the last months of his life went longer than they should of because we trusted their advice. Fast forward to recently. Our dog needed surgery for a tumor removal. She has the surgery done at VSC. Goes well according to the staff. We bring her home the next day, and her condition declines. Bring her back and find out she has a deadly disease that supposedly just randomly happens. How coincidental that it happens right after they performed surgery. A week stay at the center, treatment, meds... we are at 10k. We bring her home with so many meds that we had to keep a log. Watching her get worse and worse. Brought her back days later where we were told well you can admit her again and they could get her back to health or wait til we had a follow-up appointment the next day with HER doctor at VSC. We brought her home and back the next day where the Dr. claims she is shocked at her declined state. Offers to admit her again. Tech comes in with the lovely estimate that any VSC patient knows all to well. Another $8000 estimate to keep her there a few days. In the end, we brought her home where we put her to sleep with her family surrounding her. In the end, money is not an issue. I do not believe that an animal should suffer if it's chances of survival are slim. 2 dogs went through more pain than they should have. 2 dogs were in my opinion, robbed of their lives due to VSC making poor decisions on their care. I would have no problem spending thousands if it meant my dogs would get better. Now all I have is debt.... and a broken heart. Like any place, I'm sure there are pro's and con's of every vet. I have had nothing but bad experiences with VSC and that is why I have rated them with 1 star. I like to look for the good in people. In the end, a business is a business and they are there to make money. Even if it is at the expense of a pet's life, and your financial state. Closing thought, if they were in it for the animals, and thought my most recent dog could of lived if admitted, then why didn't they just offer to save her for free? Oh I know... cause the next chump is walking into the door and they need the bed space. read more

My dog was referred to cardiology care at this vet hospital because it was discovered his heart had a couple suspicious lesions as he was recovering from abdominal surgery at Blue Pearl Emergency care. He needed endiocardiagrams and a more specialty evaluation . Dr. Jones was extremely kind, considerate of my feelings, and was very sweet to my dog. We have had to return a few times to monitor the condition, and also were put on a drug regimen to improve his heart function. Dog seems to have more sound than he has had in several years, which I attribute to the drug helping his heart. The staff is very efficient, are careful to discuss costs every time I walk in the door so the bill is not a shock. Although taking your pet there is stressful because your pet is not well, the experience of being there is a good as anyone could make it. read more
I took Kukla to VSC for surgery on her hip, can't speak to the quality of the rest of the clinic. I had a consult with the surgeon (Dr. Able) on Friday and was told when I made the appt that the surgery could be done that day after the consult, but they don't schedule it as the consult might not go that way. Made sense, led me to believe there would be more info coming on that day. I was wrong. The consult was about 10 minutes long, she talked super fast and acted like I wasn't very bright when I asked questions. Perhaps I should have explained a second time that I was neither a vet nor a surgeon and this was my first time dealing with such an issue. She left to get me an estimate and never came back! A tech came in and gave me the estimate, asked me to sign a document deciding whether or not I wanted my baby resuscitated should she code on the table, then tried to take my puppy. I asked if the doctor was coming back, I had more questions about after care and what happens when I pick her up the next day. Nope, she's busy. The tech looked at me like I had three heads when I teared up handing my 8 month old puppy over to her. I brought the towel from her crate at home since my vet suggested it to soothe her after surgery (a familiar smell and feel from home), nope, they don't want to be responsible for it. The surgeon called me after the surgery to tell me that she thinks it went ok, they were waiting for xrays to be sure then would wake her up. Someone would call me back after she's awake. Nope, no second call. Time to pick her up the next day. My brother and sister in law come with, I have no idea what kind of shape Kukla will be in and don't want to be driving and paying attention to her. She had the head and neck of her femur removed, to me that sounds fairly painful and serious. We waited an hour before my third question of "how much longer?" resulted in a tech calling us in. I was poised with my questions for the vet and dying to see my baby.... no vet, just the tech. The surgeon isn't there on pick up day apparently. Great! I ask the tech my questions, he has no idea, just keeps referring back to the after care generic print out. So really, he was useless since I am capable of reading English. He tells me "She's already standing on it, she can walk out of here" and puts the pathetic thing on the floor. Kukla stands there shaking for a moment until I swoop down to grab her. She could no more walk out of there than I could have flown out of there. I ask how to hold her to not hurt her, he says "She's on painkillers, just hold her like you normally do" so I put my arm under her with the towel and she howls in pain. Pain killers huh? Luckily the pain killers make her very drowsy and she slept the whole way home. Monday morning I take her to see my vet since I cannot get a hold of the surgeon and I need a little direction...should she be walking around? Should I keep her calm and still? What do I do? My vet gets the surgeon to call me, she says calm and still is the way to go until our follow up 4 weeks later. Ever try to keep an 8 month old puppy from moving around for 4 weeks? At our 4 week check up the surgeon says "Have you been doing rehab with her??" Um, no, you said no exercise. "I would've liked to have seen her doing some rehab, at least walking better than she is" Then why didn't you tell me that when I asked repeatedly and my regular vet asked you????? At her check up Kukla was still having tummy issues since the surgery and my regular vet said to bring a stool sample with to the surgeons office as it may be surgery related. Dr Able actually asked me what I wanted her to do with it. "There are a few tests I could run? What do you want me to do? What test should I run?" How the hell do I know??? At that point I said "I'm not a vet, that's why we're here, you're the vet. What do you think should be done with it?" We stopped at our vet on the way home. I thank my lucky stars for them. I gave two stars because Kukla is healthy and using her leg all the time now (2 months later). So the actual surgery was a success. However, the aftercare, follow up, and general humanity at VSC is abysmal. I wouldn't even consider them for a consult if I ever (I hope I never) need a surgeon again. read more

My family and I have had some bad pet luck lately: three of our pets have been admitted to VSC between November and January. There was a point when my mom's mastiff, Maggie, was being treated and there were a few "miscommunications": one involving a harness, and another in regards to a specific (and EXTREMELY costly) drug. My mom has had other mastiffs treated at VSC. In the past my mom was charged for the harness and then, when her dog was discharged, he was sent home with it. VSC also needed to use a harness for Maggie to assist her with walking. My mom was charged $14 for the harness. Later, when we lost Maggie, my mom asked me to inquire about the harness she had paid for because she hadn't gotten it back. VSC had me talk to the grief coordinator, who explained to me that the harness charge was for "use" (RENTAL) - not something that my mother had purchased for keeps. VSC never explained that charges are for use, and I noted this. I could tell the woman wasn't happy with me, but ultimately offered to either reverse the charge or give my mom the harness. She chose the latter. In regards to the drug: The drug was discussed, but my mom does not recall giving VSC the OK to have it ordered. Needless to say they ordered it and THEN my mom found out about it. When they mentioned to her that the drug was expected to arrive on such-and-such day, she was flabbergasted. She then tried to have them cancel the order. VSC explained since it was a special order they could not do so. The next day we found out that Maggie really was not going to get better. After all of the stress of Maggie's sudden illness and ultimate passing, Mom now had to deal with having a medication on hand that she could do nothing with. VSC would not take the medicine back even as a donation - despite being unopened and not tampered with- citing some regulation. Not wanting it to go to waste, we donated it to another vet office who happily took it. Anyway, in both cases, I wish the communication had been more clear. Two weeks ago my dog Daisy was diagnosed with both renal (kidney) and heart failure. She ended up staying at VSC for several nights, and during that time she had one overnight nurse whom I did NOT care for (mid-late 20s, red hair). I had both MY phone number AND my mother's phone number down as contacts, and informed VSC that we would BOTH make medical decisions. I trust my mom more since she's in the medical field and therefore knows her stuff; however, both of us work during the day and cannot always get to the phone. I did call before work (morning of 1/29) to see how Daisy did overnight. The receptionist told me someone had just called to check up on Daisy; I indicated that it was likely my mom, and explained to her that I didn't want to bother anyone and have them regurgitate information. I said that I could just call my mom and get the update from her. The receptionist told me it was "No problem" and she'd put the overnight nurse through. The nurse picked up and was obviously annoyed with having to repeat the information. She schooled me on WHY they have a "primary" contact number. After I got defensive and repeated ALL of the above (including the convo w the receptionist) 2 or 3 times, she finally did back down and became a little nicer. Still, I felt she was really rude and unprofessional towards me. I'm pretty concerned about my sick dog, TOLD the receptionist that I didn't want to bother you, so you scold me?! C'mon. Daisy's doctor was Dr. Thornhill, who my mom and I both liked. He took his time with us and didn't rush us on anything. He did explain - as did Daisy's nurses - that her condition could change at any moment: she could be doing well one minute and the next go into distress. Needless to say, my hopes were not very high. After a few days at VSC, Dr. Thornhill stated that Daisy was well enough to be discharged. As soon as I saw her I KNEW she was worse. The next day we were told she could (again) be discharged, but she looked worse than the previous day. Again, I really liked Dr. Thornhill and felt he did a great job with caring for Daisy. He was thorough and patient at explaining everything. He never rushed us, and I'm pretty sure he stayed past the time he was scheduled to leave to accommodate us. However, I felt like we were given false hope. He did all he could for her, but the truth is that she was not going to get better. I'm not sure if the vets are told to be unrealistically optimistic, but I'd rather deal with reality and the facts: tell me that my pet is sick and we've exhausted all (humane and medical) options - for all of our sakes. We ultimately DID get to that point, but it's not something that was said easily. The staff is GREAT at what they do, and I appreciate their expertise and passion. But let's be real: my mom spent AT LEAST 15k on these treatments alone (and we've been clients since the mid-90s)..so the poor communication and attitude just doesn't sit well. read more

Over a year ago I was referred to Karen Kuhl by my veterinarian due to my dog's struggle with allergies. After meeting with Karen Kuhl and her staff I decided to proceed with allergen testing so VSC could create a unique medicine for my poor dog that would hopefully clear up his allergies. Well, a year and $2K-$3K later absolutely NOTHING has changed in my dog's behavioral reaction to his skin problems. I was originally told I should notice a change in my dog within 3-4 months. Then, upon ordering another vile of his medicine, I was told 4-6 months. Upon placing my next order for a new vile of his medicine (which runs close to $250) I was told it takes 6-12 months to notice any change. If it isn't bad enough that I was lied to right out of the gate, when I requested the veterinarians to please check the medicine they were giving me was correct (since there had been no change in my dog) I was assured it was. How did they know this without actually looking into things, I haven't the slightest idea. The icing on the cake comes from Karen Kuhl's profile on the VSC website stating, "refined my diagnostic skills and came to thrive on solving these kinds of "puzzles" for my patients". Really? Solving "puzzles"? I brought you a puzzle, what did you do? You said the rash on my dog's chin would go away, you said the missing hair on my dogs tail would grow back, you said my dog would stop scratching at his eyes and licking his feet all the time. Absolutely none, I repeat, NONE, of these problems were alleviated whatsoever. Not once did I receive a follow-up call from Karen Kuhl or her staff to check on how my dog was doing, NOT ONCE. Even after I told them the medicine is not working. Wow, what a "puzzle" solver! But, I am sure if I just toss you all a few more $$ the problems will go away, really this time. We took our 8- year- old cockapoo here at the recommendation of our vet after Carmella suddenly lost the use of her hind legs. We had an amazing experience with them from beginning to end. Carmella was quickly seen and the staff was very patient with our many questions. Dr. Comito was wonderful and called us every step of the way before surgery with updates on her prep and immediately after surgery with a report. Vet techs called every few hours to let us know how she was doing, and we were told to call anytime in the night to check in. Carmella stayed there for 3 days and the communication from VSC was incredible- everyone we spoke to was kind, efficient, and informed. You could tell they truly loved their job and developed bonds with the animals. We were very impressed with the follow-up care, as well. Carmella went back in for several planned follow-up appointments and an unexpected one when a slight complication arose. At all of these, the care was excellent. The wait times were sometimes on the long side, but you could see the staff managing urgent vs less urgent cases well. Despite the severity of our dog's condition (we knew there was a good chance the surgery wouldn't work), she made fast and steady progress and is now getting around perfectly fine and is back to her old energetic self. Dr. Comito did excellent work and was very genuine, loving, and honest. She told us that physical therapy was not necessary, which was a relief financially. We had heard that prices run high at VSC, but Carmella's surgery was similar in cost to what other vet's had suggested and ended up being less than the VSC's initial quote. This was by far the best pet care we have ever experienced and we will turn their first if any of our 3 dogs has an emergency in the future. read more

VSC has saved the lives of two of my cats. Once was through ER when I brought my older cat to them in a diabetic coma. He was hanging on to life. They saved him and were so very attentive to him, and to me. They are very busy but their communication and explanations never lacked, giving all of the time and attention that was needed to my cat and my concerns. The second health episode was this year when my other beloved 13 yr. old cat was diagnosed with lymphoma of the small intestine. The internist, Dr. Armentano, was amazing and Dr. Feinmehl, the oncologist, is also. Their vet tech staff is also wonderful. The decisions, compassion, gentle handling of my cat and dealing will all of my concerns and fears has been impeccable. My cat did very well with chemo therapy treatment and radiation. She is now in remission and behaves like a healthy, playful 6 yr old kitty. She's needed a lot of nurturing along the way with nuances that she dealt with before and after chemo, but the internist and oncology team has always been extremely responsive giving each incident full attention. I am very lucky that I live within driving distance of this level of care for my pets. I believe VSC is better than some people hospitals with their excellent level of communication, follow through, and consistent compassionate attention to patient and human family. read more

On Tuesday 04/20/2021 the birthday of our oldest dog Prada, my favorite girl Gucci died unnecessarily at Veterinary Specialty Center in Buffalo Grove for no reason other than incompetent care. I am struggling to deal with the loss, grief, heartache, and most of all the guilt. Turns out all she needed was a series of hyperbaric chamber treatments and she would be back home where she slept with me every night for the past 11 years. Up to the very end they never recommended HBOT treatments which would have not only kept her from dying but also not having to through a painful surgery. They should have recommended the HBOT treatments for the pancreatitis when they released her the first time which turned out to be too early. On 2 follow up i told them something was wrong with Gucci. Her appetite wasn't normal and no daily BM like usual. I told them I thought she had a blockage or something else. Both times told me don't worry it will happen on its own. When I took her back on Tuesday, the 13th, turns out I was right. The pancreatitis was still active. It had gotten swollen, putting pressure on her gall bladder, causing bile to back up in her system stopping her digestive process and said she had to be admitted. Still didn't rec. it after she got worse and went back in. Instead only tried IV meds which didn't work. Said she needed did expensive surgery to move gall bladder away from pancreas. . 3rd opportunity, but still didn't rec. HBOT after surgery. I am consumed with guilt for not thinking of it on my own especially after what they put Dolce through 3 years ago by screwing up with her but it worked great on her and I believed saved her life. They never once suggested the HBOT treatment. I know Gucci being diabetic and having had a seizure can with risks, but that SHOULD HAVE BEEN MY DECISION. Finally the Sunday before she died it came to me to start HBOT treatments. I called their around 2:30 pm asked to see Gucci outside. Dr. agreed said good idea. I keep trying to ask myself in my head over and over again why I didn't think of the HBOT treatments sooner until today. I feel so guilty because if I had she would be alive today. I told him I wanted to start HBOT treatments TODAY, he said good idea should help heal her insides discussed the risks, told him I was o. k. with it. He said Gucci's glucose was a little low to start it this moment (around 3 pm). I figured he would check it again in a hour or two and then start treatments so we went to visit Gucci. She was so active happy and excited to see us and I could tell she wanted to go home right now. We were only there for about 5 minutes. I was just about to say to my wife that we should take Gucci home for out patient care after her HBOT treatment, I was going to keep her in our van with the a/c on to calm her breathing down before the HBOT, but the girl came out and said Gucci was going to get her HBOT in 10 minutes. This caught me off guard made me loose my train of thought because I told her the Dr. said we should delay HBOT for a little bit (to make sure her glucose came up a bit). Her breathing was faster due to the excitement of seeing us. I keep going over and over in my head why I didn't follow through with taking her that night. I feel so guilty and don't think I can ever forgive myself for that because of what followed wouldn't have happened and she wouldn't have died there the following Tuesday. Instead of following my instincts and putting Gucci in the van with a/c on to calm her breathing, I called the girl to take her in to calm her breathing before what I thought was going to be her 1st HBOT treatment. We went home. I hadn't been able to sleep much since Easter Sunday with worry and because Gucci slept with me in the bed EVERY NIGHT for the past 11 years. I was so exhausted, but thought to myself that Gucci was looking good so I laid down and fell asleep. I thought to myself Gucci was going to get 2 HBOT treatments over night and 1 in morning and was planning to take her home Monday on out patient basis. She was also anemic after the surgery and they never recommended blood transfusion which they did for Dolce and it helped so I was going to have them do that also before I took Gucci home. More guilt that I can't forgive myself for. Apparently when they took her in after our visit she was breathing rapidly which I knew about. I thought it was just because of the excitement of seeing us and desperately wanting to go home with us. The next day I was shocked to learn that they gave Gucci a mild sedative to calm her down without consulting first. I never would have agreed to it because of all the meds she was on including opioids for pain ( the Dr. said she was on about 12 meds). Had I learned that they didn't do the HBOT I would have demanded that the do it immediately! and would have brought her home after it that night. I was also told Monday that over night Gucci developed fluid in her lungs (the rest won't fit go to facebook SCOTT ALAN AYERS read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO VSC! Dr. Metzere Bierlein De la Rosa (hereinafter "Bierlein") was the most unprofessional, immature and uncompassionate veterinarian I have ever met, who engaged in intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, negligent care, and made slanderous statements about my dog's primary care vet Dr. Rosemarie Niznik and my husband and me (We are both attorneys). During our initial visit on April 6, 2019, she accused Dr. Niznik, my husband and me of being negligent in the care and treatment of my dog Charlie Jacob, who passed away peacefully in our home on April 22, 2019. Specifically, after receiving the radiology report from the radiologist on April 6, 2019 at 3:33 a.m., Dr. Niznik immediately contacted me via telephone, text messaging and email to tell me that Charlie needed a pericardiocentesis (hereinafter "tap") right away because the radiologist found fluid around his heart, which was putting pressure on Charlie's ability to breathe. The radiologist was not sure whether it was because of tumor because it was not visible on the ultrasound. Dr. Niznik recommended we take Charlie to VSC in Buffalo Grove because VSC has an emergency/critical care facility in the event something should go wrong during the procedure since the procedure is high risk. Dr. Niznik also stated that VSC SHOULD send the fluid to a lab to determine if there is a hermangiosarcoma in or around Charlie's heart. Bierlein accused Dr. Niznik and us of being negligent, by not preforming tap following the ultrasound that was performed in our home on April 05, 2019 by a technician from 4 Paws Imaging with Dr. Niznik present, despite the known risks. As is the standard of care in the industry, the ultrasound was sent out immediately to be read by a radiologist to determine whether Charlie's recent diagnosis of lung cancer was primary or secondary to another tumor. This FACT was repeatedly explained to Bierlein, while noting the date and time the radiologist sent his report to Dr. Niznik. Bierlein would not listen to us, began talking over us, accusing Dr. Niznik and us of negligence in the care and treatment of my licensed service dog for my military service-connected disability. After the tap was completed, we spoke with Bierlein. Per Dr. Niznik, we requested that the fluid be sent out for diagnosis as is the standard of care for this procedure per two primary care vets and an oncology vet (Dr. Fredrick Drazner). Bierlein stated that sending the fluid out would not be diagnostic and that VSC does not do it. She further stated that she could not see any tumor in or around Charlie's heart either, despite checking his fluids every few hours to determine whether his pericardium was refilling. In her discharge instructions, she recommended an echocardiogram be performed, which was complete on April 10, 2019. The cardiologist recommended that we follow up with a vet oncologist, which we did on April 12, 2019. All three doctors who examined Charlie from 03/26 - 04/18/19 recommended only a second tap be done to give us time to plan to humanely euthanize him in our home, which we did on April 22, 2019. On April 18, 2019, our other dog Enna Rene was humanely euthanized because she went into full renal failure after a year long battle with kidney disease on April 14, 2019. When I arrived home with her ashes, Charlie's condition worsen. We were advised by our two vets (Dr. Niznik and Dr. Lauri Safford) to get him tapped immediately so that he could make it through the Easter weekend. Upon arriving at VSC, Charlie was triaged and taken into the emergency room. Shortly thereafter, my husband and I were ushered into an exam room. Within a few minutes, Bierlein entered the room and began yelling at us like a child and accusing Dr. Niznik and us again of being negligent regarding Charlie's care and that she felt she "needed to be Charlie's advocate." At no time did she ask us what was going on or obtain any history regarding Charlie's condition to this point. She refused to let me explain anything or provide any recent medical information and she shrugged her shoulders when I stated to her that I just humanely euthanized my other dog Enna a few hours ago. I stated that we wanted Charlie to be tapped per the advice of our other three vets and we wouldn't let her euthanize Charlie, especially when she could give a damn about what we had to say or what our other vets were advising and why. Bierlein kept saying, "I'll tap him this one time, but don't you dare bring him in again because I won't do it." Before we could respond, Bierlein walked out of the exam room. We did not see Bierlein after that and she refuse to speak with us after the tap was completed. However, Bierlein subsequently called Dr. Niznik. Bierlein yelled at then hung up on Dr. Niznik when she tried to explain to Bierlein what was going on with Charlie's care. read more

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE TRUSTING YOUR PET WITH VSC! My family spent nearly $50,000-our life's savings at Veterinary Specialty Center (VSC) in Bannockburn, IL, over a six month period for non-life threatening issues for our Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Miko and Mollie--our constant companions, gone within five months due to VSC's documented failures. VSC is under IDFPR investigation (Case 2025-08084) for ethical breaches and failed to submit records by the October 15, 2025, deadline given to them. Miko - Died January 14, 2025 Miko, my 9-year-old shadow, followed me everywhere, his tail wagging at every doorbell. We brought him to VSC because of a diarrhea issue. VSC treated him for inflammatory bowel disease. During treatment, a December 16, 2024, ultrasound revealed an 80-90% aortic thromboembolism (ATE)--a life-threatening clot blocking blood flow from his heart to his lower body. A Cornell biopsy confirmed protein-losing enteropathy (PLE), causing low blood protein and possible bleeding risks. VSC started Clopidogrel and Rivaroxaban for the clot but stopped on December 20, 2024, citing "abnormal stools." ACVIM guidelines mandate daily monitoring (ultrasounds, bloodwork) for such a severe clot, even if treatment pauses. VSC did nothing for 25 days--no ultrasounds, no exams, no bloodwork, no updates. On December 31, 2024, during an endoscopy, VSC promised to abort if blood pressure fell below 75 mmHg. It dropped to 50 mmHg, risking his fragile condition--they continued anyways. This breach alone is very difficult to recover from. I was never told treatment stopped until Miko collapsed and died on January 14, 2025, called a "heart attack." No necropsy. The clot was ignored for 25 days! He never had a chance! Mollie - Died June 26, 2025 Mollie, my 11-year-old cuddler, slept on my pillow every night, she was my precious baby. After stomach surgery on June 17, 2025, she was admitted to VSC's ICU on June 25 for swelling. Dr. Rhonda Feinmehl, VSC's owner, promised my wife and me "close monitoring." Her steroid dose (dexamethasone) was increased that night--without warning us of the life threatening risks like fluid overload or cardiac strain, critical for Cavaliers prone to heart disease. We spent seven hours with Mollie that day, walking her multiple times. She was alert, eating, wagging her tail. You could tell she was getting better. A vet said she'd likely go home soon. At 1:30 AM that night on June 26, I called--staff said she was "great." At 4:00 AM, we got a call and were told Mollie died of cardiac arrest. When we arrived, her chest wasn't shaved--no heart monitor was used. ICU logs show no vitals from 9:00 PM to 4:20 AM. No necropsy. Just "heart attack." No one from VSC ever reached out to us to even try to explain what happened to either Miko or Mollie. Our entire family is still devastated by all of this. Aftermath VSC refused full medical records for months, forcing IDFPR intervention. After Mollie's death, we were banned from communication and told to "consult an attorney" if we want all the records. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. My BBB complaint (ID 23633586) closed Unresolved with negative disposition for VSC on October 06, 2025--VSC dodged accountability, citing "confidentiality." Something is gravely wrong here. I'm pursuing legal and regulatory action to hold these people that did this accountable. I'm also working with a board-certified veterinary expert to review records, confirming VSC's failures. Losing Miko and Mollie--two healthy, beloved dogs--in months has devastated my entire family. read more

The public needs to be aware that the co-owner Mitch Robbins was DISCIPLINED by the IDFPR in 2002 for "inadvertently operating on the wrong leg." Always (yelp etc) scroll to the very bottom where it says "reviews not recommended." They are all negative and they all speak the truth that is why they are hidden. Our first visit with VSC set alarms off. After an extremely brief clinical impression by one of their vets two women immediately came in. The one woman was evaluating our finance plan for the day, ushering us to apply for financial assistance via Care Credit. I was strongly encouraged to "request the highest amount, you never know." The other woman was there to present us with a written estimate. They expect you to have the money right there and then to pay for the low end of estimate (at LEAST 1k). If you do not have it they will hand you back your dying pet. They say they do not have payment plans but they do! After so many times crying and begging for one I was given ONE payment plan. They just offer the selectively. My husband I and I were so desperate and VSC is supposed to "be the best and a trauma 1 facility" and there are not too many options out there. I found out many times Otis was examined by a resident/intern. Yet I am paying top dollar for a specialty vet to examine! None of the specialists are there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If it is an emergency just know that they will just hospitalize your pet all weekend until the specialists get in Monday morning to examine your pet. They will give you an estimate and each night is about 2k. I feel they do not have specialists on weekends so they can collect $$ for weekend hospitalizations. In addition, medications compromise a huge chunk of the bill- even if you bring your dog or cats meds from home! They are not a multi-disciplinary team. Sure they have all the different type of specialists BUT there is no communication between the doctors. For example- I was told Otis was "cancer free" from one internal med doc and when he was on vacation the other internal med doc said Otis "still had cancer" mind you these two VERY different responses happened 3 days a part. I saw and experienced no collaboration with the doctors and the specialists. Absolutely no compassion.. VSC never worked with our primary/family veterinarian. My primary veterinarian send them Otis's records and VSC denied ever receiving them. I had to fill my primary vet on what happened at each visit to VSC. No phone call was EVER made by VSC. Again, none of the listed specialties worked together at all on Otis's case. Robbins performed a 10k operation on Otis and we never even met the guy! All we got was a phone call! And the internal med vet did not say one word about what Robbins did or how Otis's surgery turned out. And this is VERY dangerous! It cost my boy his life. Since then, I have been subjected to VSC bullying, intimidating and threatening me because I am going public/protesting with my message. read more

Our first experience with VSC was when our 13 year old Lhasa Apso took ill and we rushed him into VSC and Dr. Robert Armentano, DVM, DACVIM took care of him. Barkley was very lethargic and urinating blood, he was wasting away before our eyes. Dr. Armentano was very compassionate when dealing with us and explaining Barkley's condition and that Barkley's body was killing his own red blood cells. there was nothing we could do for him except put him through blood transfusions which were no guarantee would work. I remember sitting in the room with Barkley for at least 4 hours trying to decide what to do and asking the same questions over and over to Dr. Armentano, and not once did he show us anything but kindness, compassion and honesty. Most places would have suggested to try the blood transfusion just to make the money but not VSC, they put the patient and family first and what is ethical to do for the patients and families wellbeing. While making the hardest and saddest decisions we have ever had to make, Dr. Armentano was there for us to assure us that we were making the right decision for Barkley and he deserved to suffer no more. Fast forward 6 months and we have a new puppy Cubbie, also a Lhasa Apso. When Cubbie was around 3 months we woke him up one morning and he was lethargic and blind, he could not stand and when he did he walked into walls and cabinets, we rushed him to VSC and he was diagnosed with a Portosystemic Liver Shunt. Again I turned to Dr. Armentano's expertise and honesty, was it a good idea to put Cubbie through the surgery and cost, what were the odds he would live a normal life. Dr. Amentano was very honest with us and gave us two options, Cubbie could possibly live on a controlled diet and be medicated or we could have the liver shunt surgery which is to have an ameroid constrictor placed around the shunt which he would then have great possibilities at a long normal life. He warned us of all the side effects of surgery but also felt very confident about it, Cubbie was a baby and deserved a chance at life. We took Dr. Armentano's advice and Cubbie had the surgery. Thank God we can say Cubbie went into the surgery weighing approximately 8 pounds he is now a happy healthy 19.6 pounds. We still go to see Dr. Armentano every 3 months to be sure Cubbie is progressing as he is suppose to. It is such a joy to have our sweet little energic puppy back to normal. I cannot express my gratitude enough for Dr. Armentano and the staff at VSC. Every single employee there is caring and truly has the patient and the family foremost in their minds. They are always there to take a call and if they are busy they always call you back. It is so nice that as times change one thing has stand a constant at VSC, they give 100% Grade A Outstanding Service. Joe, Michele & Nicole L. read more

I have spent THOUSANDS of dollars over the years at this place and will never go back. After being told my cat would not live past a few months for severe congestive heart failure, she has indeed surpassed their predictions by almost a year. Went in for that yearly in order to get prescriptions renewed, seeing as she was supposed to be dead already, according to them. Megan came out with a clipboard of an estimate of around $2000, for the same diagnostic tests that were already done almost a year prior for which I paid thousands for, at which time they told me she didn't have much time to live. I said I didn't want to do all of those tests again because the cardiologist already told us it was the worst case of CHF he has ever seen. So because I just wanted the exam, minus the tests, Megan returned with my cat to tell me the doctor said it was unnecessary to see the cat without all the diagnostic tests. So Megan said she'd save me the $95 exam visit and go ahead and refill her prescription. It was clear to me that that would take care of the one year rule for prescriptions refills, since I scheduled the appointment and the doctor didn't want to waste his time on a visit without charging thousands in unnecessary tests. When I went to renew online again, a month later, I got a nasty text saying sorry its been a year and its "illegal" for them to refill prescriptions without the cat being seen. Again, how is it my fault he didn't bother to look at her for my scheduled appointment? That was the whole reason I came in for the appointment, not to spend another $2000 for tests so they could tell me she is in really bad shape, again! In October of 23, the cardiologist said he'd try to get her through that Christmas, but it would definitely be her last. We were told maybe 4-6 months yet she is still doing great. This place just wants to charge for the most expensive tests but refused to fill a prescription for a necessary medication to keep the cat alive. Not profitable for them. Every time I went in I could hear people in the lobby asking "well how much is that going to be" because that's all they want to do is make money and don't really care about your pet. So, I called Lincolnshire and without her being seen they went ahead and filled the prescription same day. Because they actually care about my cats! read more

BEWARE! We had a horrible experience at Veterinary Speciality Center of Buffalo Grove. From the inconsistent communication, lack of expectations set about our pet's likely outcome, poor client service from the "hospital manager", and sub-standard care our pet received, we would advise you to take your pet elsewhere. To top off a horrible client and patient care experience, when we showed up to pick up our pet the bill was over $4000 MORE than the quote we received from the surgery coordinator. We love our pets and this place is a disgrace to the veterinary community. They take advantage of clients, provide poor patient care, and refuse to address client concerns in a timely manner (been waiting for the manager to call us back from over 4 weeks now, said she'd call back by end of day). We requested copies of the medical records three times, and have yet to receive more than a "boarding/treatment checklist". Our pet still is slowly moving and recovering, a month after the surgery that per the Surgeon, "would be up and walking to use the bathroom the next day". He is still dribbling urine, and a month later still has some "post-operative" swelling. When the local veterinarian called to inquire about the swelling because she was alarmed as well the surgeon told her it was "post-op swelling and it'd go away", who's ever heard of post-op swelling 4 weeks after a procedure from a surgery that he was supposedly going to be up and walking the next day. The lack of accurate communication regarding the bills, poor expectations, keeping my pet under anesthesia for over an hour while she did surgery on another patient, hemodiulting our pet (over-loading with fluids), failure of the manager to address concerns in a mutually agreeable manner, and not communciating an accurate picture of post-surgical recovery time has caused us great distress, caused our poor dog to suffer and has caused us to lose all faith in this so-called veterinary speciality center. Extremely disappointed all the way around. First time and last time here. Seek care elsewhere - at one of the Veterinary Teaching hospitals nearby (U of I, U of W, Purdue) or one of the other local specialists (Arboreteum View, VCA Aurora). STAY AWAY! read more

This is a sad example of a successful practice having grown too large for its own good (or the good of its patients). I will say that the doctors seem very knowledgable and compassionate, and the staff are all very friendly. However, administratively, it is a nightmare. You will always have to go through a wall of automated systems first, whether by phone or online or even showing up in person with a referral from another emergency hospital. My cat Lucky was referred here for a perineal urethrostomy surgery. After paying thousands of dollars out of pocket, I was sent home with nothing more than a pamphlet and a hollow, 'don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions or concerns'. They didn't even have the medication for him ready yet, they had me drive over to the corner drug store and pay out of pocket to pick it up (when I was probably already charged for it to be given to me when my pet was returned to me). The following days, Lucky was still behaving strangely and not drinking or urinating normally, which worried me. I tried to wait it out but the stress and anxiety of worrying over his life and wellbeing was too much. I couldn't get a hold of any of the doctors or staff who saw him, and the only reference I could find to address my concerns was their generic, automated number, each option of which (including the emergency line) referred me to a mailbox. When I finally got a hold of a staff member, it was explained to me that there's only a $4 difference between a follow-up visit (which wouldn't be available for a month) and an emergency visit. This means that, after paying exorbiant amounts for care, there's absolutely zero follow-up to make sure that the surgery had gone successfully, or that the pet patient was recovering well. You bring your pet in, they cut him up, send him home, send you on an errand to buy the medication and get double charged, and you just have to hope that all goes well and if you have any 'questions or concerns' about the complications of surgery, that will be an entirely separately billed issue. read more

We go to VSC for oncology on a regular basis as our dog has several types of cancer (she has also had several surgeries at VSC over the last 3 year for cancer). Last week, our dog was hospitalized for 2 days for multiple seizures. She went in through ER with Dr. Foley and then the next day was taken over by Dr. Noonan, the temporary neurologist. I really liked both doctors. They were clear, logical, straightforward, and quite knowledgeable. They provided all information and options to us. They communicated regularly with us as well. Additionally, they were personable and friendly; they seemed to really care for our dog, which is very important to us. They also worked with a team of doctors (our oncologist, etc.) to identify the problem and decide on the best treatment. We were taken in fairly quickly when coming to the ER and when we had an appointment the following day with Dr. Noonan. As always, the technicians were amazing, as they also seemed to truly care for my dog and were open to us visiting her and calling to check in on her. The staff at the front desk is helpful and friendly (for example, Jackie). They also made accommodations in getting us in the schedule. The office is always clean too. I also like the VSC keeps my primary vet, Dr. Bannow, informed. She gets reports consistently and almost immediately. For this one, I would give VSC 4.5 stars. For other visits, it might be 3-4 stars. One of our issues with this place is that appointments with some doctors can be late; I have waited 30-40 minutes to be taken in by some doctors. Another issue we have is the cost; some items seem a bit pricey and excessive. For one of the surgeries 2 years ago, the doctor kind of messed it up and we had to pay for it to be fixed (we did get a 20% discount, but we still had to pay extra for something that was not our mistake -- and this was verified when we asked several other vets). read more

If it were up to me, I wouldn't even give them 1 star- I have NEVER in my entire life, been treated with such disrespect, especially from a vet....HINT: MY DOG IS THE ONE SUFFERING NOT ME! I had a 7:30 appointment- I unfortunately had to come from Chicago, and traffic was HORRENDOUS. I left the city at 6 am thinking I'd have plenty of time. I showed up at my appointment at 8:11 am. I even called on my way to the Vet to let them know I was running late, and that if there were any issues to please call me, no one called. I show up with my sick bulldog (who just had an enormous hot spot that got infected) and they refuse to let me see the doctor. What kind of sick people are they? So I ran 40 minutes late, I understand that's poor on my end, but you're going to make my dog suffer!? I could understand if they said it might be a little while for the doctor to see me as she now had other patients to see, Ok I could stay a little longer for making them wait, but NO- I was not allowed to see the doctor. Not for 10 minutes. They kicked me out. NEVER EVER EVER have I ever been apart of a group of people so cruel and unforgiving in my entire life. These people are supposed to be animal lovers, and they kick my sweet pooch out. When I later spoke to someone, I said "I'm sorry I was late, but you couldn't just squeeze me in and have the doctor come back and forth? Maybe she works a little later?" They responded with "this is the first time you're seeing this doctor, why would she go out of your way to work later for you?" I was ready to be like b*tch please! This is how you develop a relationship. Anyway, never ever going back there again. read more

I was referred to VSC in March by my primary vet when my little girl ( ST. Bernard)decided to stop eating, was lethargic just not her self. She had a series of labs done by her PCP and the results were not saying much. Finally the last set of labs showed that she had a low white blood count and needed further evaluation. My vet referred me to VSC where I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Mordechei and his staff who I must say are phenominal. After having an ultrasound, spleen aspiration, and bone marrow biospsy my little girl was finally diganosed and has been showing great improvement ever since. We return every month for follow-up and recheck and will continue to do so for as long as we have to. Dr Mordechei communicates all findings and results with our vet the same day. Everyone at VSC is wonderful and I thank God everyday for the compassion and medical care that gave me back my little girl. Now you may have noticed that I did not mention $$$, and that is because my little girl is my family and I would do whatever it takes and whatever it costs to make her healthy and give her the great life she deserves. You would not put a price on your child, spouse, sibling, or parent so why on your pet? I understand that everyone is in a different ffinancial situation and thats OK but don't knock a place based on cost find a place that meets your needs and can help your pet as well. VSC does wonderful work and should be recognized for all the great work they do. The results are not always going to be what we want them to be but lets give credit where credit is due. Thank you VSC for all that you do. read more

I was referred to Bannockburn Animal ER under the impression that they were one of the top hospitals in the area. Sadly, my experience was not only disappointing--it was very distressing. Two days prior, my dog was seen urgently by his primary vet for GI issues. Bloodwork indicated pancreatitis, and we were advised to go to Bannockburn for an ultrasound to confirm. After waiting over 4.5 hours, the ultrasound was finally performed. The doctor assigned to our case seemed inexperienced and unprepared. She reported that everything was "normal" except for "scant fluid in the abdomen"--two findings that contradict each other. When we asked follow-up questions, she repeatedly said, "I'm sorry, I'm new here so I don't really know." This lack of knowledge and confidence was alarming, especially in an emergency setting. What made the experience even worse was the complete lack of empathy from the staff. We were clearly worried and seeking guidance, but our concerns were brushed off. We had to advocate for medications ourselves and left with no clear treatment plan. It felt like they were more focused on collecting payment than providing care. Two days later, my dog's condition worsened significantly. We took him to Blue Pearl in Northfield, where he was correctly diagnosed and immediately treated. Thanks to their expertise and compassion, he is finally recovering. Bannockburn failed us when we needed help the most. If you're looking for real answers and a team that genuinely cares about your pet, skip Bannockburn and go straight to Blue Pearl. read more

I have been taking my dog here for a few years now, and if it's not one thing, it's another, and VSC always comes to the rescue. I've been taking her for therapy because of a slight torn cruciate (torn ligament) by doing under water treadmill and laser therapy, and working with the Dr. Seilheimer. Eventually, we came down to the decision that the therapy just wasn't going to do the trick, so surgery it was. Dr. Wood performed the surgery and repaired the cruciate. She, along with her tremendous staff did a wonderful job in taking care of my baby, and kept me informed either by the tech nurse contacting me, or by contacting me herself. She stayed overnight, and I made sure that I had the right team taking care of her, and they also kept me informed. My veterinarian suggested we take her in to see an internist because of her liver issues be extremely high. So I took her to see the internist, Dr. Guantous, and he did a full blood work and ultrasound to check her liver to make sure nothing out of the ordinary was going on. We came up with a plan to see how she would react with the different dosage. If the levels stay down from the last blood work then Dr. Guantous will take her off of prednisone which she is currently taking, and put her on a different medication, because she shouldn't be on it since she is 9 years young. read more

I took my pet to this clinic for an emergency situation. The receptionist were pleasant and friendly. The hospital was huge, clean very organized. One of the employees cleaned the small examining room before we entered. The Dr entered the room with a bad bedside manner. He was very negative, speaking way too fast and spewing out medical terms left and right like I was a colleague. And when he explained what the terms meant he spoke way too fast for me. He seemed annoyed that I asked questions or asked him to repeat what he just said. He gave me three suggestions for my pet. And when I told him I wanted to try his first suggestion he walked out of the room with a look on his face as if he was thinking I was a fool to think this will help my pet. The clinic said they would fax my pets report to my regular vet. I had an appointment the next day at my reg vet; the clinic never faxed over the report. I'm glad I brought it with, I knew they were incompetent. They charge a fortune, I know they have to make money but it's ridiculous the amount. I hope I never have to go there again; and if I do I will ask for another doctor. Also, they never called me the day after my pet was sent home; very disappointing. And another thing, the Dr. kept saying he/she, he/she. He never remembered if my pet was a boy or girl. read more

I agree with the previous reviewer that this is the Mayo Clinic for pets. Our cat was dying last summer and our long term veterinarian could not find a cause. A second vet took one quick look at him and immediately did a referral to Vet Specialty. Unfortunately, our cat was in the final stages of kidney failure and they could not save him. However, the doctors and staff at this facility were phenomenal. They gave us a run down of expected service and a price quote and let us make a decision on what to do. The treating vet called us a couple of days after our cat died to walk through why he died and he was much more warm and compassionate than our initial vet . His feedback was crucial because our cat's litter-mate was still with us and thanks to his advice we were able to pin point her health concerns and provide treatment before it was too late. By the way, everyone we dealt with there was very nice. And, we are still waiting for a return call from the initial veterinary hospital. They had treated my cats for five years and my husbands family's dogs for 45. All of our animal patients no longer go to that place. read more

I have brought several pets here for different issues. Most recently to repair my dog's torn knee ligament (she had both legs done here) and another dog who's chronic cough no other vet could figure out. Dr. Paula West did both my dog's legs and I can't thank her enough. A job very well done! My dog is so happy to be walking and running normal again. My other dog, it turns out, now has asthma, and thankfully, this place figured that out in a timely matter. Poor thing was coughing all day and night! Other vets just kept giving her antibiotics that did nothing. These guys knew exactly what to do and it's under control now. I also have a dachshund who herniated a disk and was quickly going paralyzed. I rushed him to VSC because I trust them and guess what? The day after surgery he was walking normal again. Unbelievable! This staff knows their stuff and is the best around. It is not cheap, that's for sure. But when you think about all the money you would spend to figure out what's wrong with your pet just save yourself the trouble and go here. It's a one stop shop. read more

When our neighborhood veterinarian had exhausted all resources available to him, he sent us to VSC to try to figure out what was wrong with our dog. We began working with Dr. Mordecai in January of 2017 and have continued to see him to manage our dogs now diagnosed auto-immune disease. He is conservative, not prescribing drugs to just prescribe them, which we appreciate and extremely patient with all of our questions. His knowledge and "team" approach is greatly appreciated. An example: prior to adding another drug to our dogs treatment he conferred with his colleagues to get their input on the direction we were taking. Our dog had surgery and even when we called in the middle of the night to check on him we were treated with kindness and understanding. In addition, they area 24 hour facility, which is comforting when dealing with a dog with so many health issues. We consider ourselves lucky to have been connected with Dr. Mordecai and VSC, and more importantly, I think our dog is happy about it too. read more

I can't remember the last time I was so impressed by any service anywhere as we were when we took our 13 year old Lab to the Veterinary Speciality Center. She couldn't move her back legs, and her front ones were starting to go. Dr.Comito and her assistant walked us through all the tests Nikki would be receiving with an itemized price list, and most importantly, reassured us that no matter what decision we decided to make regarding Nikki, that is was OK. Unfortunately, we decided to let Nikki go due to her deterioratig condition, and everyone was extremely comforting - Dr. Comito was there with me when I said goodbye to her for the last time, and I will be forever grateful for that. This excceptional customer service continued when my daughter and I picked up Nikki's ashes last Sunday when the desk clerk genuinely expressed her condolences for our loss. This has been and continues to be a difficuly time for our family, but the personnel at the Vet Speciality Center has made it easier to cope. Thank you again! read more

Just left VSC. I have been a dog owner for my entire life and hence have had many emergency and non emergency vet visits. I literally walked out I do our meeting before the vet came back with our discharge papers. Front desk staff is rude and inconsiderate both on the phone and in person. They. If used our dog with another dog and called us into an oncology room and then rolled their eyes when we said we had no clue what they were talking about. We were quoted 3 different prices for a simple ultrasound and were then told it was the New Years price and they have it in their head. I'm sorry get it straight a bill over $600 is not chump change. I don't need to hear your excuses. Long story short the vet we saw was arrogant, confrontational, illogical, and so unpleasant I had to close my ears and drown him out. I really wish I would have read the these reviews before wasting my money but I trusted my vet. Save your $ and go see someone who actually cares and can help you and your pet. read more

I do not recommend this Veterinary Speciality Center for surgery. In my experience, they treated my elderly dog poorly and made an already difficult situation traumatic. Seeing my dog left unconscious on a cold floor without what appeared to be proper attention or care was heartbreaking. What should have been a procedure to help my dog ended up costing both his life and over $12,000. No amount of money can compare to that loss. The way my dog was treated felt deeply disrespectful, and it has caused long lasting pain for my family. I understand that not every surgery has a positive outcome, but I do not feel like this facility took accountability for what happened, and that has only made the situation more difficult. I will never forgive this place for the pain it has caused my family. My dog deserved better. If you are considering bringing your beloved pet here, I encourage you to carefully research all of your options before making a decision. read more
