I have been here twice now. Las year for my friend's birthday and again this year for the same friend lol. He sure likes this restaurant! There was apparently a group of sportscasters that frequent this establishment every time they were in town the same night I was there. The birthday boy was very happy to take a picture with. I was being healthy and got the Chicken Cilantro. I was surprised by how perfectly cooked the chicken was and the sauce was tasty. I have lived in Irving for 2 & 1/2 years, never went to Via Real. Not a smart move on my part. On Friday, June 22, 2018 I met friends for dinner & adult beverages. Once inside I loved the venue, so wanted to sit in one of the two front open rooms with windows. Spoke to Lisa and it did not look good for our party of 8. We stayed at bar as she indicated she would look further into our request. Well Lisa did a great job cause we ended up sitting in one of the rooms. Thank you LIsa, my new best friend! Not bad but not great. I had high hopes for the dinner here with my wife. We specifically requested that we wanted to watch football on this Saturday night and they did seat us within the range of the one tv that is in the bar area. They do not claim to be a sports bars so that's ok. On to the meal... The wife loves shrimp cocktail so we got two. The shrimp were fine - mine had some shell and I had to spit it out ,but whatever. They were nice and big but a bit too firm - the cocktail sauce was not special. Pork fajitas for me and spinach enchiladas for her were next. Neither were anything other than ho-hum. I know what you're thinking; Just what is "gourmet tex-mex"? Well, if we assume Via Real is truly gourmet, then it's simply the fact that the tables have white linen tablecloths on them. Other than that, I didn't see this place providing much more than what's offered at Gloria's as far as the food delivered to the table. You gotta hand it to Via Real though -- they've been in business since 1985, which means it's older than a lot of it's customers. The problem though is it's really turning into a relic of the day; I don't think there's been a significant update to it since it opened. What you end up with is a dining experience from another era. Metal patio chairs for inside seating, exposed brick walls, and a interior decor that was probably very upscale in the 80s, but is outdated by modern standards. The acoustics were laughably horrible because of the brick walls surrounding our table; At several times I needed to shout to chat with friends. Very loud! I'd make sure you get an interior table (not next to walls) if you want to hear who you're dining with. Overall, the food was good. My spinach enchilada was similar to Gloria's, but not as well made. Chips and salsa were OK, but nothing stand out. The tex-mex dining scene is so overly saturated in Dallas, I suppose my biggest criticism for Via Real is the "gourmet" tag; Show me what they're doing that isn't covered better elsewhere. read more

They obviously do NOT drug test their waitstaff--or something. The waiter was absolutely creeper. He was nice. He starred directly into your eyes wayyyyyyyyyy too long. Very uncomfortable. He would disappear for very very long amounts of time. It took forever to get drinks, took forever for him to take our order, took forever for the queso, took forever for the food to come and took even longer than forever for the check. There were 6 of us and it took 2 hours to eat lunch. They were not packed. He was not busy. And I would blame it on the kitchen but everything was soooo slow. It was crazy how bad it was. I requested a box for my three pieces of quesadilla which were left. I waited for freaking evah. Eventually he came back and took my plate to box them up for me. The next day I opened the box and had one tiny piece. WHAT HAPPENED? I'm guessing that he trashed the rest of it. My food was good, but not amazing. There's too many good places to go in that general area for me to waste time on some place that does not value my business enough to have better service. I dined with a large group for lunch. Since we had made reservations, we were seated immediately. The restaurant is beautiful, with a large, inviting wall that contained lit candles. A separate room also contained a fireplace for when it gets chilly outside. The service was nothing less than spectacular. Our waiter was informative and friendly. Our drinks came out quickly and they were never empty. No, I will take that back, our glasses were never half full. We all started with the queso. Super small bowl to share, and it was just ok. Definitely zero spice. Same with the salsa. After reading reviews, I was expecting the salsa to be spectacular. It wasn't. It was fresh but was basically tomatoes and cilantro. Where was the "kick"? The chips were fresh tasting, though. I ordered the spinach enchiladas. First thing, when it was brought to the table, the waiter informed me to be careful because the plate was hot. Hmm, what does that usually mean? That it had been on the plate for a while and was either sitting under a heat lamp or warmed in the oven. The plate was hotter than the food, sadly. In some restaurants, the spinach they serve tastes like it was either canned or from frozen. Via Real uses fresh spinach, so the texture was nice and chewy, not slimy. The food was good, nothing memorable. Zero "yum" was heard at the table. Oh, and as we were leaving, I noticed a pile of candles at the hostess table for sale. I thought this looked ridiculous. This was my 2nd time here and I'm very impressed with this place. The staff is excellent, I mean with everything, service, how you are greeted at the door, how your food is presented to you. It's a very good experience to be treated like a real customer. The portions are not very large, but it's very tasty. My husband and I decided to give Via Real a try on our 8th wedding anniversary and let me say, they exceeded our expectations!! Right away we noticed the beautiful ambiance, dim lighting, the perfect set up for a date night. Next, the service we received from our waiter, Paul, was outstanding! Being first timers, he gave us a quick history of the restaurant and then his personal recommendations on the food and drinks. He was very knowledgeable and made it easy for us to choose. Finally, the food was delicious. Hands down the best Salmon I've ever had, and my husband's Camarones a la diabla were also amazing. I have been going to Via Real for 15+ years. It is a favorite lunch spot. Today, however, I felt like I was at a different restaurant. The service was horrible. Our waitress, we believe, did not put our order in. She came by 15 or so minutes later to ask if we were waiting for something besides our entree. Ah no, that's all we ordered. Our salads came out within 10 minutes after her visit. We were there for an hour and a half - truly unacceptable for a lunch spot. We finally had to ask one of the managers for our bill because she never came back to us. Is this a sign of things to come??? Another excellent experience at this lovely restaurant. Have been back a few times since my first review in June, and this spot never fails to more than exceed expectations. Don't know how it can get any better. Our last few visits have enjoyed the exemplary service provided by Patrick. He is a delight, always remembering us, recalling that my dining companion is in town from Colorado, and thanks us for dropping by. He also knows just how we like our Top Shelf Margaritas. (Yes, we've enjoyed these on subsequent visits since June and will each time we go) OMG, these are Top of the Top Shelf's. Patrick has the touch (or guides the bartender just what to do!). Started out with those wonderful thin and warm chips, and some of the best chunky perfectly seasoned salsa in town. Patrick also surprised us with a complimentary bowl of the creamy Queso dip. What a nice touch, thanking patrons for coming back. One BFF ordered her usual burrito with black beans, Queso on top, and more creamy black beans and rice on the side, made just the way she ordered. She trys to order something different, but just can't help herself. Such a creature of habit she is !! :) Another BFF ordered the Tortilla Soup, which he said was delicious, with all the Avocado, Chicken, Peppers and tortilla strips. It looked 'luscious, thick and brothy. He also had the Spinach Enchiladas, which I have had before, and they are simply awesome with the sour cream and tomatillo sauce. Yum !! This visit, I had the Tilapia Fish Tacos, which truly are the best I've enjoyed anywhere. Perfectly grilled, thick, flaky, tender and seasoned, with a creamy spicy sauce, sliced Avocados on the side, and accompanied by Barracho Beans and Rice. Three huge tacos, enough to carry some home, in the soft , apparently made in house, flour tortillas. The beans were smoky, tender and rich with the deep broth, downright slurping good !!! The melding of all the flavors exploded in my mouth. Heaven on a spoon and a fork! :). Drooling as I type. BFF's adorable well behaved 9 year old had her usual chicken strips and french fries, and her Mom announced to Patrick it was her birthday. Patrick surprised her with a complimentary dessert of Creme Brule', her favorite. Another nice touch to make us feel really special. We also shared the Tiramusi, which was absolutely delightful. Throw caution to the winds, forget the calories, and enjoy this wonderful sugar creamy indulgence. Food - a stellar "10" if I could. Service - another stellar "10" if I could Atmosphere; yep, another "10" LOVE this restaurant. I'll be back many many more times. 3 stars based on what it attempts to be based on price and ambiance. So...this place is weird to me. Are you nice tex mex? Because if so, I'm down, but I don't think I should be charged almost $20/plate for the simple stuff. Ordered the via real margarita. Coming in at like $13, this was the biggest ripoff of the night in a night of overpriced food. Don't order this. It's a small portion served in one of those cheesy cactus glasses. The taste was nondescript. I was disappointed the second I sipped it, given the price. The queso costs extra, and is not that great. I had the Cancun plate, and I'll say that the scallops were borderline excellent. I also tried a friend's sea bass, and it was great. The chicken fajitas were fine, but not mind-blowing. The service was very clumsy. No timing to his visits, he was awkwardly rushed at times, and then disappeared for a while. Now, this would not be a big deal at most places. But you're averaging like $40/person here, so you expect better. So, it's like....I don't know. You turn down the overhead lights, turn up the price, and serve a lot of the same old same old? If you're interested in coming here, don't be discouraged. It was fine. But for $130+ for three people (two of whom were not drinking), I expect a lot more for the money. read more

Pros: Very attentive waitstaff, some non-standard menu options that all looked incredible for this hungry meal. Very good presentation on the plates. Significant margarita and tequila menu. Cons: When I walked in, I did not think of this as a Tex-Mex restaurant. I was reminded much more of a couple places in southern Tuscany. Not that this was a huge distraction (if at all, since I didn't come to this realization until I was having after dinner cappuccino) and it certainly did not take away from the overall dining experience. The rice left a little to be desired, see food review for more details on this. Food Review: Thankfully, I had reserved some dining room tonight for an entire meal. The chips and hot sauce started things off very nicely. My kind of hot sauce, spicy with not a lot of cilantro in it. The queso was also very nice, rich and thick sauce with some good pepper flavoring in it. For entrée, I order the Taocs de Res. Anticipating something fajita like, I was very nicely surprised at this item. These were actually closer to enchiladas than tacos, when ordered with the optional queso and chili con carne sauces. I'll admit, the queso sauce here was better than the con carne, but both had great flavor. The rice by itself, was somewhat boring, however, when mixed with these sauces and some of the leftover steak from the tacos, it livened up quite a bit. For desert, I had the Roll de Canela, which is somewhat similar to a Tex-Mex version of a cannoli. Instead of sweet cream, this was filled with cheesecake and deep fried. I'll qualify this as not being a cheesecake fan, this was delicious. However, I would have liked a little more strawberry with this. One small sliver just didn't seem to be enough. It did, however, go well with the cappuccino made from a real machine, not some mix. Service Review: This is the seller for me in this restaurant. While the food was superb, the service was far and beyond great. Within the first minute of sitting down, the chips and hot sauce were delivered to our table. Our waitress had a great understanding of their menu. The presentation she made for their house specials was very clear and descriptive. Lacked for nothing during and after the meal. It was clear, that her mission was to see that the dining experience was enjoyable. Overall Thoughts: This was my first visit to Via Real, but I can clearly say, it will not be my last. My friend and I decided to come here last minute for a ladies night out, to get away from it all. When I walked in to meet my girlfriend, we were immediately seated at this lovely table next to (lower level) the bar. Our waiter for the evening, "John" couldn't have been any better! We started out with the calamari (yummy....just needed some salt), and worked our way to our main courses (chicken enchiladas / chicken fajitas) which were delish. We even ordered the creme brulee to share. While we were busy munching....our gentleman waiter accommodated us with the most exceptional service that I have seen in a long while. As the night progressed, I shared with my friend, that I felt like we were totally on a chick-date. This place is pretty romantic and would be a wonderful place to feel comfortable, eat well, get your romance groove on....all while experiencing what service should be. When I come into a place from out of town, I do my best to sample some of the best food in the area. I think I hit the nail on the head here. Let's be honest, when I landed, I was hoping to catch some BBQ. And with the timing of things, I didn't get a chance to go to the place I was hoping, but it ended up working out. I was a little disheveled from a pretty decent day of traveling, but folks here treated me well just the same. I was promptly seated, and one of the excellent servers walked me through the menu and the specials. I asked what he tends to enjoy, and he tipped me off to a great steak that wasn't on the menu, nor was it on a special: filet served on a flaming plank to give it a little smokey flavor right there at the table. And man, was it satisfying. Also, this place had some of the best chips and salsa I've run across. I couldn't stop eating it! Not only would I not hesitate to recommend the place, I actually did so during my training the following day. Excellent food and excellent service with a very nice decor will do that. I went here on a first date. A first date I met through a well known online dating site. First dates are awkward. Especially with someone you meet on a well known online dating site. I digress. When I walked in I really liked the look of the place. I sat at the bar facing the door so I could see the mystery man when he walked in. I ordered the chicken enchiladas. I love chicken enchiladas. They are one of my favorite things. These were delicious. I wolfed them down. Good cheese to chicken and sauce ratio. The rice was very good too. Sometimes Spanish rice seems half-assed like they just mixed rice and salsa. This was not like that. I also had a peach frozen margarita. That was really sweet (I like sweet) and actually tasted stronger than I anticipated. I think this was my first margarita ever (I don't like strawberries). They had a nice wide variety of margarita options. I liked the fact that the place was not so loud that I couldn't talk to my date. I also liked the fact that the owner came by and asked us how everything was. Our server was very attentive and rather helpful when I asked him a few questions. The next time I go (and there will be a next time despite the fact that it is in Irving and Irving is far), I want to order the steak. It comes to your table still flaming. This is a hidden gem in Irving. We came here last night with a group of friends, a few of which were vegetarian. Via Real was able to get us and our party seated fairly quickly. We were promptly seated on the patio and got to ordering drinks and appetizers. The queso had some green vegetable looking thing on it which I personally didn't like, but everything else was pretty good. The scallops and shrimp I ordered were made pretty well, though a bit salty. I did enjoy the entire meal and ambiance. Service was good, and could have been a bit better. I came for lunch and had a chicken dish with chipotle chili's. It was really good, a wonderful explosion of good flavors. We joined some good friends here for an after-Christmas dinner, because the restaurant was a favorite of theirs and happened to be located near their neighborhood. We'd never heard of the place before, but then we're always looking for new restaurants to try. I had a helluva time finding the place - virtually invisible from the street (McArthur), and I had to drive around for a long time before my eye caught the sign on the side of the building - guess my approach from the north was from the wrong direction, so I was not in a good mood when we arrived. Nonetheless, I was impressed with the illumination and the decor of the restaurant and the reception staff were friendly. The small bar in the corner looked comfy. We were a group of 7 people, which I didn't consider all that large, so I was a bit taken aback to find out that they had automatically added a generous gratuity to our bill when dinner was over. That said, the service was pretty good, although it took plenty of time to get our drinks. Mrs. Bear got a margarita the size of a bird-bath and said it was the best bargain on the menu. The menu was large and impressive with what I would call nouveau Cancun cuisine, heavily weighted towards seafood. I was not in the mood for seafood at all that evening, so I had a trying time looking for something I considered appetizing. So after locating the TexMex section I finally chose a desired selection. On the other hand, Mrs. Bear loves seafood, so she had no problems finding something immediately. After a short while our dinners arrived, steaming hot and elegantly prepared. I was impressed that the portions served were "just right" - not too much nor too little - very unusual these days. My enchiladas were flavorful but too "gringo" in my opinion - not very spicy. Mrs. Bear's fragrant scallop dish was pronounced excellent. Other dishes at the table appeared to be equally well-prepared. The final bill was pretty hefty - worked out to be $49.00 per person - so this place is most definitely not a cheap date. But if you're in the mood for seafood Cancun-style, this could be your place. read more

Omg.... Best brunch in the metroplex !!! Ok. So I don't wake up till noon on weekends. So I got here at 1:30pm and brunch was over because it was ending at 2pm for Super Bowl. Brunch here usually goes until 2:30. The manager ( I think) told me they were closed and I almost cried as I was craving breakfast particularly eggs. He saw the look of disappointment and decided to make an exception for me. Boy am I glad he did. The brunch buffet was amazing. I was craving eggs but ended up enjoying the other options more. Empanadas, beef tenderloins, mixed veggies, hash Browns were my favs. The service is amazing. Really. Everyone was attentive and on the ball. I will return every chance I get. I have been going to Vial Real for 10 years, at least once a month. This restaurant has the greatest ambiance in Dallas. Not to mention the great Tex/Mex and Southwestern flavored food. I had an early dinner here with a business partner and colleague upon her recommendation. This has to be a place you are familiar with because it is a hide way establishment at the back of shopping center with low visibility. The restaurant is very nice in a dated sort of way. Via Real is a white table cloth establishment in which everything is very clean. The decor just feels dated - but does that work when trying to set a mood for Mexican dining? You can decide for your self. I did not each much, but my friends meal looked great and she really enjoyed it. I just had a soft chicken taco, no surprises with that meal. We sat in one of the sun rooms, but with all of the rain, it wasn't very sunny. The customer service was very good except when I asked for them to light the fire place or turn down the air, the waiter looked at me like I was crazy. I know it is summer, but it was freezing in the restaurant. He said we could move, but it was even colder inside the main dinning area. From the time we left our table to the time we made it to the front door, a down pour fell upon us. We waited for some time for the rain to stop with no avail. When I went to make a run for it, the valet parking attendant offered me his umbrella to take to my car parked around the corner. As I pulled up to pick up my friend, he walked her out with another umbrella. He gets major points for that. Thank you sir! This seems like a nice place to go for a quiet meal. I have always liked this restaurant because of the wide range of veggie options and phenomenal service so I thought to myself, "maybe my husband and I should try this awesome lunch buffet everyone keeps talking about!." If you can... Make sure you take a small loan from your bank prior to sitting down because at $54 for two people, the food was average, at best. The vegetarian choices on the buffet line were limited and there were no labels on any of the dishes so I had to find someone to ask them what was okay for me to eat. At $25/person, I was expecting to be blown away. Instead I was met with cold, tasteless hashbrowns and eggs, and a salad bar where everything tasted like bacon. It was also FREEZING in this place. Then, I kindly asked a server for veggie options and he said they could make me a veggie enchilada! I was thrilled thinking that I usually love their veggie enchiladas! I was again met with plain, tasteless zucchini and squash rolled up in a corn tortilla and served with tomatillo sauce on top. This is nothing like the awesome enchiladas you guys serve for dinner... What happened? My husband, who is a carnivore, said he wanted to go to IHOP afterward so he could get some "real" and more importantly, HOT breakfast. Went here on a date with my husband. Food: Overall, I really enjoyed the food here. I had the enchilada and tamale plate. The enchiladas were very good and I'm not usually a bean fan but there is something addictive in their black beans. However, I was not a huge fan of the tamales, will defiantly not be ordering them next time. My husband had the cilantro chicken, which I stole a bite of and was very jealous of his choice. The salsa was served warm and it was very tasty. Service: The front desk people are very courteous and friendly. My waitress was not the best; she was not very attentive and the restaurant was pretty empty so I'm not sure what she was doing most of the time. Price: This place is pretty pricey for Mexican food.
