Ever since I had my first taste of the flavorful and tasty Lao Sausage, I was hooked. Needless to say, my curiosity with Vientiane Grocery's Lao sausage made me go there. I'm glad I did. It's a well lighted, clean and organized Lao grocery that sells frozen and hot Lao food to go. They had 2 kinds of Lao Sausage - spicy and regular. We chose the regular kind and thought that it was very good; lean-not-dry and just the right amount of heat/spice level. The salad with crispy rice, "Nam Khao" and Steamed Layer Pandan Cake was also a big hit in my family. We also tried their papaya salad, grilled beef, fried short ribs, Lao baked egg and their chicken noodle soup, "khao piak". Generally speaking, it's all good. Clean, pleasant customer service, reasonably priced and fair portions. While I've never been to Laos, I'm glad that we have the chance to try some good Lao home cooking via Vientiane grocery. read more

I'm happy I found this neat little place! It somewhat blends in seemlessly within this small cookie-brown stripmall and menu (more later) pictures serve as window privacy screens, as well. The outside is what it is and then you enter... ...lots of groceries you can find at Asian groceries as well stuffs you can only find here perhaps central to the Laos the region. Some munchies, pre-packaged noodles, dry noodles, can drinks I've never seen before, a nice selection for you home-cookers... I got some Thai coconut wafer box and dried jackfruit snacks. The bag/company claimed these weren't made/stored via chemicals so that's cool. Now the deli food! When I looked around up front, a gentleman checked with me. I asked about the deli food and he pointed to the windows - oh, the picture menu right there! Lots of tasty-lookin' dishes and I asked if he preferred anything. After considering my super vast options before me, the Pad Krapow sounded great. That it is (beef and/or another meat, I forgot) and with the fried egg as well as the egg rolls (order of 7). All to-go and the pad krapow was pretty tasty - make sure to mix it together! Mmmm. The egg rolls with the fairly standard tangy sauce were good; weren't saturated or overly wet and a nice crispy layer. I want to try more of the meat and rice dishes! Also, I wonder if they still have those sweet rice cake things made fresh that Alanna mentioned 4 years ago. Nice staff and the girl up front is nice, if a bit soft-spoken. Check it out. Vientiane is still one of our favorite places to hit up for authentic Lao cuisine. Although they are limited to basic ingredients for Southeast Asian cuisines, they definitely make some of the best lao dishes utside of my friends grandmas house! Theyre friendly and typically its really easy to have your questions answered. We recently ordered a couple party platters, Large Beef Larb and Nam Khao. Everything came hot and ready at our specified time. (I went to the store the day before to order for pick up the next day). The beef larb and nam khao was really good, our party guests killed it. I love the convenience of being able to order something delicious and close to my home cooking. So much convenience and so delicious. I highly recommend their party platters. Everything you see is 2 portion of each put together. The portion definitely got smaller & the price increased. But that's not even the biggest issue. The food taste like nothing before. The little restaurant inside of this Lao grocery store is a hidden jewel! My friend told me about this place and I finally got a chance to stop by today to order some takeout. They have a giant menu with pictures on the wall to the right, after you enter the store. They offer tons of Lao food and it all looked so good - it was hard to narrow down the choices. I ordered the nam khao (lao crispy rice), lao sausage (i opted for the spicy one), and the pad lao. After paying, I went to run some errands outside. They don't want you to wait for your food inside the store (for obvious social distancing reasons!) so they ask you to wait in your car or outside and check back in 15 minutes (there are paper signs that say this too). The grocery store part is really small and I didn't look around too much buy everything look really clean and organized. I came back after checking out some other shops in the giant plaza and my food was ready! EVERYTHING was AMAZING. The nam kao was delicious - it comes with lettuce and cilantro and you're supposed to eat it like lettuce wrap! The pad lao was really good - I love noodles and I chose fried tofu and I love the fried egg that came on top. And the lao sausage definitely had a nice kick to it and tasted yummy - it also came with a side of sticky rice. I absolutely cannot wait to go back to this place to try more of their food. The staff all wore masks and there was hand sanitizer at the front of the store. And the staff were also super nice! The grocery store is located in this giant plaza, so there's lots of parking, which is a bonus. read more

I always love finding hidden gems like this in cities. When I pulled into the parking lot, I was expecting a bigger grocery market. I was surprised to see that it was no bigger than a 711! Walking in there are tables right in the front for people to sit and eat. You can order your food with the cashier directly on the left. I honestly had no idea what to order because I get all my Thai, Cambodian, and Laotian food mixed up. They have pictures on the wall to help you decide, or you can always just come on to Yelp. I decided on the Khao Poun w/ beef, which is basically a spicy vermicelli soup. The soup definitely packed some heat and smacked me in the face with it. I'm sweat very easily, and I couldn't stop. I embarrassingly used a fair share of napkins to wipe off my shame. Overall the soup was flavorful and there was plenty of beef. If you enjoy bun bo hue or bun rieu, I would say it's a spicier version of that. I think the base is chicken, but I'm a little unsure. It's very authentic though!! After visiting Luang Prabang in Laos, Mr. W. and I were eager to explore Vientiane Asian Grocery to see what they sold and served. Neither of us knew much about Lao food before, so it was fun to see things in the store and on the menu that reminded us of our short trip. We were most excited about buying a container of jeow bong, which is a sweet and spicy dip with pork skin (yes) that is eaten with sticky rice or veggies. In Luang Prabang, it is made with water buffalo skin. It is kind of thick, a little chunky, and pastey, and has a variety of herbs and spices. It is SO addicting. I couldn't stop eating it with my sticky rice...using my fingers, as I was taught in Luang Prabang! :D For food, we ordered grilled chicken and pork sausage, which both came with sticky rice in a basket. The grilled chicken was very flavorful, though some pieces were a bit dry, and came with a tasty sweet, sour, and slightly spicy dipping sauce. The sausage was meaty, flavorful, moist, yet not super fatty. It had all those warm, bright, and fragrant ingredients that I enjoy so much, such as galangal, kaffir lime, chilis, and garlic. The portion sizes and prices are reasonable, too, at $8 per plate. Along with the jeow bong, it was the perfect veg-less meal. read more

I heard about Vientiane when I read Roanne C.'s ROTD. I bookmarked the place and stopped here for a late lunch en route to the airport. Airport food will never be as good as what this grocery and deli have to offer. My dining partner and I were welcomed by the owner and we took a couple of paper menus from the cash register. This is resourceful if you're well-versed in Laotian cuisine. We were not, so we looked at the pictures taped to the windows. As did many people who came after us. That's a pro-tip! On this visit, we ordered the blue crab papaya salad (mixed Thai and Laotian-style), pad krapow with beef, fried egg, and rice, and Laotian-style fried noodles. The papaya salad was so spicy at 4 stars, but we savored every bite until the noodles came and won over our tongues with their Pad Thai-like sweetness. I personally don't like Pad Thai, so I wouldn't get this dish if you're not a fan of it either. But, if you love Pad Thai, then definitely get this to ease yourself from something familiar to something new. The pad krapow was my favorite with beef and that runny fried egg cascaded from atop a mound of rice. I had eaten quite a bit before this arrived, but I scarfed this down. Overall, I would recommend Vientiane. I'm not big on ambiance, so the picnic tables here worked for me. This place has been on my list to try and I finally did! The food area is inside a grocery store. The store itself is pretty simple and small- it has the basic necessities you might need for cooking an asian dish and also has pre-made Lao/Thai desserts. I specifically came for the food. I got the lao style papaya salad extra spicy and fish kaopoon and omg! I'm in love!! Their extra spicy is just on point not like other places where I can't even taste any spice! A little hard to find, but a gem when you do. Don't worry, the restaurant is inside the grocery store so you're at the right place. We ordered the Chicken Kao Piak noodle soup, spicy pork sausages, Papaya salad and the Crispy rice (Nam Kao); they were all excellent. Be careful though as they don't joke around with the spiciness. I consider myself fairly tolerant of spicy food, but the papaya salad (albeit delicious) was too much for me to handle on a Sunday morning without a serving of Yogurt in my stomach. The crispy rice is absolutely delicious and definitely a repeat order for our next visit. We enjoyed the food so much that we ordered the beef jerky and grilled chicken to go as well. One hunnit percent legit Lao food here. I grew up eating this stuff and when I'm too lazy to cook I come here. My mom used to take me to stores like this when I was little so I feel completely at home. This is the only store I have been able to visit and snag everything I need to keep my Thai ingredients fully stocked at home in one shot. Besides doing grocery shopping here, I will order lots of food. Everything seems to run about $8 a plate/bowl. My husband was sick so I took him here to get some chicken soup. I ordered chicken larb & beef jerky. Of course they provided me with some khao neau (sticky rice). I asked for my larb to be Isaan hot and they nailed it. A little light on the pla deet but that's easily remedied with the nice condiment selection. I also tried the iced thai tea, very sweet but not sickening. My favorite comfort food while away from home. It's a small grocery market with tables to dine in for those that want to. You place your order with the cashier and he'll relay the order to the single handed woman (chef) in the back. She's amazing because there were multiple people ahead of me and with HUGE orders. I waited awhile for my food to come. The nam khao (crispy fries rice) was flavorful and good. The papaya salad was spicy. I love spicy, but i probably their chili was a whole other level. I couldn't hang, but I enjoyed this place over Thai Savon (which I ordered same dishes, different places to compare). Don't judge me! Parking is quiet small. A big car didn't park correctly, so I couldn't. I admit I was the jerk that double parked, but only for 15 minutes. I definitely would come back. If you're craving lao food, this is the spot! Whenever I don't know what to eat, this is my default, and it never disappoints. All of the food they serve here is so good but some of my favorites are curry (not sweet and very savory), sausage, papaya salad (lao style...gotta get that dank, of course!), beef jerky, and the list goes on. Also since it's a grocery store as well, they sell uncooked sausage and make sure to get the lao sauce in the fridge!! You can thank me later. This hidden gem is not only a market but one of the best restaurants for Asian food. They have a variety of Papaya salads, as spicy as can be. The crab papaya salad, the Thai papaya salad, and etc. the salads are amazing. That spicy Lao sausage is so good too!! And the crack sauce that comes with it is the best combo I've ever had. I have to get it for my dad once a week because he loves that meal so much. Ive had a lot of nam Khao dishes home cooked and from different restaurants and this dish is as good as a home cooked one. It's so good! It stays crunchy even the next day. The food is amazing and so are the drinks, I usually just get Thai tea or the Thai tea coffee. Overall, I'm now a regular here, they're quick at making the dishes without compromising on the taste. They seat you right away and they pick up the phones for orders efficiently. I've been dying to try this place for a long time now! I was drawn to the fact I dont often see Lao restaurants, but also loved the authenticity of it being within a grocery store. This well-known yet hidden gem in the rainier valley has some of the most affordable and tasty Thai/Lao food around. Coming here with my grandma since I was little it is always nice to see neighborhood establishments like this one survive the rest of time. A childhood favorite one of my go to dishes to order here is the Nam Khao. A crispy rice and pork salad that is eaten with lettuce wraps. Laos/Thai food deli in a grocery store. Too legit for words! Order the beef jerky, grilled beef, or grilled chicken-- they all come with a side of sticky rice. The beef jerky comes with a roasted tomato salsa which is to die for! The grilled beef comes with a spicier chili sauce, you sweat from the heat but it's so good you can't stop! They have other items like papaya salad and a ton of noodle dishes but I normally come here for those I previously mentioned. I had ordered Khao Piak when I was feeling under the weather.
