The beef jerky comes with a roasted tomato salsa which is to die for! The grilled beef comes with a spicier chili sauce, you sweat from the heat but it's so good you can't stop! They have other items like papaya salad and a ton of noodle dishes but I normally come here for those I previously mentioned. I had ordered Khao Piak when I was feeling under the weather. Papaya salad with crab - outstanding. Some of the best I've had. The real gem here is their lemongrass sausages, which are giant and the most delicious and flavorful sausage I've ever had in my life. Came for late lunch/early dinner with friends from the area that introduced us to this restaurant/grocery store. There are not a lot of seats and it's first come, first served. I let the friends order and we tried a bit of everything. It's not exactly Thai, probably more Lao cuisine but the food is very good. The menu is taped on the wall and you can see pictures of the food. Will definitely come back to try this place again. Lao markets are hard to come by in Seattle. Once in awhile I like to stop here on a weekend when they make these fresh rice cake type snacks. It's hard to explain but it's almost a 1/2 round made from rice flour and somewhat doughy and cooked in this specialty pan. The closest thing I can compare it to is stuffed pancake or 1/2 of it and not stuffed You can sprinkle a little sugar on it and it turns into a delightful treat. There are also some other Lao snacks up front that are made daily. If you want to sample a few things or are just too lazy to cook and don't feel like ordering from a restaurant it's a nice place to stop. You can also find unusual herbs (and I'm not talking about MJ), rent Thai soaps and purchase Lao music CDs and DVDs. read more

This place is as close as Lao home cooking as I have had growing up. There's only 5 tables but you can always get it to go. After searching for Laotian food I found this place. The reviews were good and I couldn't resist hitting it up. It's become my regular stopping place because the food is exceptional. I've been working my way through the entire menu and I have enjoyed every minute of it. One of the best things about this place is the homemade sausage. I've had the regular, spicy, and sour. In their freezer and icebox section you can purchase prepared meals, sauces, and sausages to eat or cook at home. Sometimes the soups aren't as good as I expect. I assume they do give the broth time to develop. In my opinion it's some of the most authentic home style cooking in Seattle. I often want an Asian meal for breakfast. They are open at 10am so if you are craving some real good breakfast you have a place to go. I love this place....soul food #1! read more

This little place is inside a plaza full of other Asian businesses. Half grocery store, half deli/restaurant. I came here for the nam khao and the Lao sausage. I really wanted the e-saan sausage but it was unavailable. Both dishes were fantastic. They even packed the peanuts for the nam khao on the side for me as I requested. Well packaged and still warm by the time I got the food home about a 22 min drive away. They have a few things to go in their refrigerators and freezers, including beef jerky and sausage. I also picked up a pandan jelly cake dessert thing, covered in coconut flakes. It was delicious! I wish I lived closer to this place - I'd be here all the time! I also saw on Facebook that they've been broken into twice in a manner of months, as recently as a day or two ago. I would never have known when I was in there today. They cleaned up very quickly. This place used to be good. My last few visits here has been disappointing. Champa Garden in Redding, CA was so incredibly good that I had a craving for more Laos/ Thai food. The Papaya was super dehydrated and taste old. The "chicken" to the kahpoon was shredded so finely, taste like powder! I had better luck with my food when they were at their old location. All were absolutely flavorful, and I will come back to order them again and again! Although I like the sticky rice that comes with the spicy sausage and spare ribs, next time I think I'll go with steamed rice instead... just a minor personal preference on my part, that's all. There is a ton of parking. It's a simple, mom-n-pop shop at the end of a row of little stores. Whenever I find a place that blows my mind as crazy as Vientiane has, I immediately need to write a review. The strip of MLK to me has always been a melting pot of diverse cultures. It's one of the reasons why I've always been drawn to it. From Mexican shops to Southeast Asian grocery stores, this place honestly has it all. I just can't believe that it took me a while to discover Vientiane, since it's right beside one of my favorite Thai/Laos restaurants in the Southend, Amazing Thai/Laos Cuisine (formerly known as Thai Savon)! Most people care about the ambience of the restaurant, but if you've been following my reviews for quite some time now, I usually drown that out because I never get put off by bad service and usually I can ignore that fact if a meal is just too delicious not to try again. Aside from that fact, this Mom & Pop Laos grocery store honestly just makes me feel as if I'm eating on the streets of Southeast Asia. Convenience store on one side, makeshift restaurant on the other. The menu covers the store front window with colored photos to help you order with ease. Wooden tables and chairs. Utensils, napkins and condiments already at your table and cooks wearing crazy colored pants and aprons with eye appealing patterns.. Almost reminiscent of the kind of "moomoo dresses/duster" that my Filipino grandmother would create for herself with her sewing machine and lounge around in (did anyone else's grandma ever do this or just mine?! Haha!). However, I came to Vientiane for two things and two things only: Nam Khao and Papaya Salad. Those two items are staples in my book of favorite meals to eat but also a "right of passage" if you will, if a Thai/Laos restaurant is legit or not. The Nam Khao was a solid one in my books. For those who have never had it, it is basically a crispy rice ball salad where rice balls seasoned with red curry paste are deep fried, then smashed in a huge bowl and tossed with pickled pork, cilantro, peanuts, green onions, limes, fish sauce, a little bit of sugar and deep fried red chilies. It is served with romaine leaves and more herbs so that you can fill these vessels up and eat them like lettuce wraps! I've never had a restaurant add so much pickled pork to it! Every bite I had a little bit of everything. The contrast of the crunchy rice and peanuts with the chewy bits of pickled pork worked so well! I loved how it was seasoned with more fish sauce because other Thai restaurants seem to drown the flavor profile with more sugar in order to cater to the American taste palette. Talk about authenticity! The Papaya Salad is probably one of my favorites in the Seattle area. I am a lover of spicy food. Let me tell you this: they do not play with their spice! I ordered this at 3 stars and I swear to you my mouth was on fire! The salad was nice and lime-y, garlic-y, papaya was super fresh and crunchy. I was also glad that this was more salty than sweet, granted Laos Style Papaya Salad is supposed to use more fish sauce so that it's not as sweet as the Thai Style. The thai eggplant and tomatoes soaked up the dressing so well. The fermented crab added an indefinitely satisfying dimension to the dish that might not be for the faintest of hearts, but I enjoyed very much! If it wasn't so spicy, I could probably eat this dish all day, everyday. The price tag for this lovely meal? $16. Almost all of their dishes range between this price range which makes it an affordable lunch/dinner destination in my books! SO. GOOD!! Came here and got the Nam Kao / Crispy Rice, Sai Ua / Spicy Sausage, and Khao Poon (with fish). Everything was seriously DELICIOUS! The sausage had a wonderful flavor, and a really good spicy kick. The khao poon was something I hadn't tried before, but really loved! It's about time that I wrote a review for this place. My family is a frequent customer at Vientiane. We love Isaan and Laotian food, and this place is great in so many ways. First, it's one of the most authentic SE Asian eateries in the Seattle area. Secondly, it's also very reasonably priced (although they raised their prices to something more expected -- I think some dishes were only around $6 previously!). The Laotian sausages, the grapow (thai holy basil) with chicken, the som tam, and grilled pork with their side of spicy sauce and sticky rice are all my favorites. It also has a small grocery store for Thai/Laotian ingredients -- along with videos and traditional clothes. The layout reminds me of my years in Thailand and Laos as well... the silverware in the container, the laid back feel,etc. If you've been to that region, you'll know what I'm talking about. Anyway, we travel from Issaquah every week or so -- and pass up some of the decent Thai places in our area in favor of this one. Definitely try it -- you won't regret it! read more

My favorite Laotian restaurant. I don't cook Lao food at home and don't live close enough to my mom to eat it often. When I'm feeling homesick, or literally sick, I can count on the food at Vientiane Asian Grocery to make me feel better. Whenever I order food from the restaurant, I always grab already-made food from the fridge, freezer and counter. Usually that's laap, poun (?), frozen sausage, pickled greens, and some kind of dessert. It reminds me of going to the big Lao house parties when I was young! Haven't been here in years, but my friend got me hooked on their Lao sausage and beef jerky again. Small store that holds enough essentials for a typical Asian household. They also have a deli with a huge menu aka pictures plastered on the window with prices. I've never ate from the deli, but people tell me it's good. I snagged some spicy Lao sausage, flat beef jerky, and the strips of beef jerky. I also picked up a tub of jaew bong.. their type of chili paste. So good with rice! The beef jerky has gotten more expensive with less amount of jerky. Comes with the times I guess. Came home and fried both meats and I had the best meal ever.
