We really wanted to like this place. We bought the classic items: pho, eggs rolls and bbq pork with vermicelli. The pho was pretty good, simple and without the multiple layers that pho should have but the basic beef bone broth was adequate. The bbq pork was a little dry and burnt but also good enough. Tasted a bit like mall food but that's ok, we can live with that. What was extremely and shockingly disappointing were the eggs rolls/cha gio. I mean, they could have googled the recipe! Who puts potato in Vietnamese egg rolls?!?! They were busy on a Sunday night and service was slow but there were only two of them at the front. It's a small house that looks like it was converted to a restaurant, cute but the walls were bright green and one of the lights inside was flashing next to our table so that drove my poor hubby crazy...Anyways, no photos. I tried this place for dinner one night with my brother when we were wanting to change things up and try something new in Chico. So.much.yes! I got one of the rice noodle bowls. My overall review of this place is 4 stars, because I enjoyed my experience, but the food was honestly a 3/5 for me. This was my first time in Chico, and basically the closest pho place to Placerville (where we were camping) and in the direction of our home. I'm not too too familiar with Chico, and unaware of any competition, but they were open on NYE and I thought the family team was really endearing to interact with. The female staff member speaks English, Cantonese, Mandarin, and Viet! This Quadrilingual Queen runs the front of the house. I love pho. In Chico it's always a gamble, but I'm prepared for that. Nothing could prepare me for the sheer unprofessionalism of this establishment. They have no menu online, let alone a real reputable website. Over the phone the employees are hostile and un-accommodating, especially regarding the issues mentioned above. When ordering I was faced with more hostility when asking if I could make adjustments to my order. They were not busy enough to justify their harsh and aggressive attitudes. The condiments at this establishment live in single use plastic to-go drink cups - so unsettling. When waiting for my order there was nowhere to sit except for very dirty tables that had yet to be bussed. When I tried to use the restroom I was turned around by mountains of clutter and garbage. Hands down best Vietnamese food you will find in Chico. Food: Ordered the Vietnamese Crepe aka Banh Xeo perfectly crisp on the outside and nice and soft on the inside. The Bun Rieu was nice and crabby, very flavorful and very FILLING, taste just like mamas. The broken rice my brother had and said it tasted great. Definitely will be back! Thank you! Probably the best Vietnamese food I've ever had, and definitely better than the other places I've tried in Chico. I recommend trying the egg loaf. Super delicious! Everything I've had here is excellent. That said, when they get a bit busy it's just bad service. Went in 11:55 and was maybe half full. Most people were already eating. We didn't get water for 40 minutes. (This was after flagging someone down more than once). Several groups who came in after us were served and had food before our orders were taken. Eventually we got our food, and then our appetizers... Left about 1:45. Almost two hours later. Total time actually eating? 15 minutes. And I'm not trying to be a Karen here. The food is bomb. They are nice but ... she was not that busy. She just disappeared for long stretches of time and seemed to forget any prior requests and either seemed to forget we were there before later arrivals or didn't care. Even after being asked again for water. If they simply didn't want us there they could have asked us to leave. I would only recommend eating here in VERY slow times. And if you get the feeling you're being ignored, maybe you are. read more
