We ate here 7/1/19 with a large group of about 12 people. Many of us were visiting from out of state (CA) for a family reunion. The staff was very accommodating and quickly set up a table for us even though we didn't have a reservation. Our waiter, Jay went above and beyond, splitting checks multiple ways and even gave samples of beer one of the older gentlemen in our group who was disappointed they didn't serve Budweiser. Jay was very knowledgeable and accommodating with all the menu items. The food was all excellent, and everyone left satisfied. There are tons of drink and food options, and the menus are fun, you can see images of exactly what each item is. We'll definitely be back if we're ever in Michigan again. read more

I came here for the first time with my mom, knowing about how great their pizza was, so I had to try it for myself! I do have to say that the pizza was pretty great. My mom and I also had a salad and it was amazing! I almost preferred the salad over the pizza, but both were great. The next time I had their food was for lunch and we ordered take-out and unfortunately I wasn't given salad dressing. I think the inside of this restaurant could be updated, but overall everyone was friendly and the food was good! read more

I had heard so much about this bakery and decided to stop there and bring some baked goods to the beach. One brownie was delicious, the other three were obviously not "freshly baked." They crumbled when we tried to eat them, the chocolate chips were white which means they went for hot to cold at least once. One brownie was still a little frozen. When I think of the word bakery I think of freshly baked items. I expect to buy freshly baked items. If I wanted 3 day old baked good I would have gone to the grocery store down the street. read more

This little place has such great curb appeal we stopped in spontaneously. It has a Bavarian-ish bakery feel. The display cases are filled with breads and baked goods that make your mouth water just to look at them. Plus they have a creative menu that includes pizza/salads/sandwiches, and breakfast items. We snacked on some cookies and scones and had a raspberry tea and a strawberry shake - all fresh, flavorful and oh so yummy. So yummy we got a few slices of cake for later. Unfortunately, the cakes we took home were disappointing. I think the chef forgot to put the cocoa and vanilla in the red velvet cake - then frosted it with buttercream instead of cream cheese frosting. Seriously, I've made mistakes like that. We tried two different cheesecakes and the flavors were one dimensional. I think this place is better than the desserts we took home. We will definitely return and try some menu items. This is the coolest bakery in Michigan! They have incredible food (pretzels, muffins, burgers, Brazilian stew, pizzas, and did I mention pretzels ). The vibe is eclectic/hip, with artful decorations, novelty gifts, and curated playlists. My favorite part is the staff - so friendly and eager to serve. I just finished my first purchase from Village Baker and my taste buds are still celebrating. It was a turkey sandwich on cranberry wheat bread with sharp cheddar and an Oatmeal/cran cookie for dessert. It was hands down the best sandwich I've had in years. I also tried a sample of their Opera cakes and two words popped into my head...."moist" and "good-grief-that's-good". If it's hyphenated it's still technically one word. Look it up. Anyway, go there and try stuff. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I think I found a new regular lunch place. read more

Good, but not great food. My wife and I split the Reuben. Neither of us were blown away. They make their own breads, but the bread on an Arnie's Reuben is loads better. My sister-in-law had the Breakfast quiche and she loved it. The best thing they served was the Jamaican vegetable soup, the soup of the day. It is a thin veggie soup with very fresh veggies (the zucchini was perfectly cooked--a rarity). They have a full bakery. Again I think the breads are very average, with the exception of the soft pretzels which are fantabulous. The atmosphere is the place's strong suit. Very nice, airy, outdoor seating available. We couldn't use it though as it was raining cats and dogs that day. Too bad though. It is a very nicely decorated and comfortable-looking area on the south side of the building with plenty of shade, and away from traffic. On Thursdays, they also hold a farmer's market in the parking lot. All in all, although the food is not spectacular, between it, the atmosphere, and friendly staff make it well work the money. read more

Beautiful pastries, Major attitude from Counter Man. Just left the Village Baker and would have ordered something but attitude from counter man put us off. Went there to try the pie and possibly the bread pudding. When we asked about a slice of the 3 pies there the man who was in some sort of costume. Mustache and Wright brothers hat snapped that they "do not do custom slices". That's fine...But his demeanor and tone of voice stopped us from any further purchases. read more

I want to like this place after reading all the reviews, but have been twice and both times have been very disappointed. First time ordered a couple of pizzas for take out. They took about 10 mins longer than what they said on the phone so I thought no big deal. Italian stallion pizza was good but the villager was not. Something about the preztel crumbs and balsamic just didnt work overall. We also got a pretzel which was pretty tasty. The 2nd time we ordered food for pick up from here, things went south fast. They quoted 20 mins on the phone but took over 45! The worse thing about it was no apologies or anything. I asked the manager why it took over twice as long as the quote on the phone and she said we're busy and we dont prioritize phone orders over customers that eat in. I told her if I had known it would have taken so long I wouldn't have placed the order or have cxld it when I came to pay, but even after I paid I was told it would only be another 5 mins not another 25 on top of the 20 that we already waited before driving there. I had 2 kids in the car and this was unacceptable. On top of the bad service, the breakfast sandwiches we ordered were not good. They put all the sandwiches in plastic bags so that they steamed and got soggy and they also put way too much mayo on them which just made an awful mess. Long story short. Don't order take out from here unless you want to wait a long time. Also don't order any of the breakfast sandwiches. We tried about 5 different ones and none were any good. The only things that were decent were the breakfast burritos. read more

What a pleasure it is to have such a good artisan bakery in the village. I'm partial to the sourdough, both white and nine grain, but all the breads are excellent. The pastries and deserts are delicious. Try the breakfast cookie - it is the best cookie ever. We were excited to try this place as visitors from the Grand Rapids area and (California) beyond. It is a cool looking joint with great looking pastries and bread options. We unfortunately never got to taste any of the food because we left before it was served. After ordering drinks (which took 30 minutes to come out) we realized they were on the slow side so we put in our food orders when the drinks finally came. After sitting there for an additional 1 hour and 15 minutes (with no end in sight), we decided to cancel our food order and go somewhere else. To sum it up, we were there for an hour and 45 minutes, saw our waitress (maybe) 2 times, had one drink each, and had no idea when our food was coming. No one had answers for us. We love our local baker for breads and baked good! Check out the day old bin for some sweet deals too! The multi-layered cakes are SO good to take home and enjoy over a couple days. From the eclectic music - soma FM http://somafm.com/ - that is really part of the presentation...I mean you actually can hear it, to the likeable and efficient young staff, Asiago cheese scones, Feijoada, (a black bean, pork, beef, stew - that changes daily - the Brazilian national dish), and that bread - that hard crusted European bread - the place is filled with good things going on and great stuff to eat. I travel a bit - been to a ton of coffee shops and bakeries around the planet - haven't seen much better for a pleasant feel with great food, certainly not in this neck of the woods. The Lakeshore is very fortunate they got this place. The owners are dedicated to the community, to quality, and they just keep evolving - the menu and the presentation. Did I forgot to mention the pizza? Fresh, healthy farmer's market toppings, by the slice (a big ole slice for two bucks) or the whole pizza its real pizza guys - in all sorts of creative mixes.. And facachio (olde world pizza)? Come on, where can you even get "straight out of the oven" facachio now a days? While we were camping at Hoffmaster State Park last week, we made several bike rides on area trails and visited the Village Baker three times. It made a wonderful stop about 3/4 through our 20-25 mile loops. Highlights - outdoor seating front and back (bike parking in back), and super easily accessible to the trails vie the back entrance. Cinnamon Chip scones were fantastic as was the 'pretzel bread' that we tasted on Friday. Service was friendly, and selection was superb. Why not five stars? We like chocolate milk and were psyched that they had organic from a local dairy, but strangely, on our first visit we got big pint glass glasses, then on our second visit slightly smaller plastic dome top cups even though we said it was 'for here,' but the sad thing was that the third day (again, all in the same week), we got much smaller, maybe 10 ounce Solo cups. Price was the same, $1.50 each, so we were disappointed. It was a Friday morning and they were swamped, with a farmers market starting up in back, and we decided that we'd rather press on our ride than stand in line to complain. All in all, a great place to visit if you're in town. read more

Such a cute and unique gem. You can order things to go at the counter or sit down and be served. Our server was quirky and funny and made our experience really great. The food is local and fresh. This is a very cute, quirky place with great options for sweets, I suggest the macaroons or a lemon bar. But this place is known for their baked goods: muffins, bagels, bread, pretzels. That's not really my thing, but they are very popular and people rave about them. They also serve pizza and sandwiches, there's really something for everyone. They have bar seating, table dining, cafe-style seating, and some spots outside too.They have a liquor license if that tickles your taste buds. On Sundays, predictably, you'll stand in line a bit, but it's not bad. On quieter days, I enjoy popping in, sitting at the bar, bringing a book, having some food, and relaxing. One thing I wish they would consider: offer the pie by the slice. It's so good, looks so good, is so tempting, but there are no options for a slice. They sell a "mini-pie" but both times I had it the mini-pie crust was burned and besides, a SLICE of pie is special. read more
