I order at least 6 THICK SLICED sourdough loaves about every 3 weeks to share with my family and friends. Every one loves this bread. The guys that takes my order earlier in the day is always AMAZING, the other ones late in the evening SUCK! Stop asking for my credit card over the phone, I'm not giving it to you! I ALWAYS pick up and pay for my loaves at the store. Other than that, I really love the freshness of there sourdough loaves and baguettes. They are also at the Davis farmers market on Saturdays. They don't have thick sliced, you have to pre-order it at least 24hrs ahead of time. Look, I've never been to NY, so I can't speak on their pizza. I also haven't tried that many pizzas, as I tend to stick with what I like. But this is the best pizza that I've ever had. They got the dough recipe figured out. It's simple, gets the job done. Thin and crispy on the outside, doughy on the inside. Not too doughy to the point where I'm eating bread. Just good pizza. Whenever I'm headed to Tahoe from the bay, I make a pit stop here to grab a slice or two. I'm always skeptical that nostalgia skews my view in a favorable light, but I just had them again this past weekend and they still hold up. Don't ever change, Village Bakery. Side note, I find grabbing slices at this location to be better than their sit down spot. I think the pizza gets a little more time in the oven here. read more

Good pizza and baked goods (4/5 green stars) The Village Bakery is one of the first places you'll see when you get off an Amtrak train, so it's a very convenient pit-stop before or after a trip. Nice outdoor seating with shade. The man at the counter and the chef/owner were both friendly and helpful. I had a slice of the veggie pizza ($3.50) and a mixed berry scone ($2.50). All the food looked appetizing - they had some good-looking eclairs and cream puffs but I tried to exercise some self-control ;) The selection of veggies on pizza was great: nicely caramelized onions, zucchini, peppers, etc. Not too heavy on sauce or cheese. Most of the cheese was feta, which really worked well with the veggies. The scone was really delicious: crumbly and light, dusted with icing sugar and animated with the flavor of blackberries and blueberries. I'm giving the Village Bakery 4/5 "green stars" for social and environmental impact, based on these reasons: * They use local fruit and veggies when possible and everything made in house. * For the pizza, they use olive oil for the crust (unlike some other pizza places). Olive oil is generally a sustainable product. * They source organic tomatoes for the pizza sauce when in season / affordable. * For the bakery side, their dairy comes from Crystal Creamery. From what I've read I'd place them somewhere in the middle - not nearly as good as an organic creamery like Strauss, not as bad as Dean Foods (Berkeley Farms). * Not much waste generation - the pizza is served on a paper plate and bakery items in a paper bags. Unbleached, recycled paper would be an improvement. I think the utensils and lids were conventional plastic. * Two out of the three pizzas on sale were vegetarian. Ever written a green star review? Love Village Bakery! I have been coming here since I was young and it's always delicious. We used to come for lunch in HS for their pizza and a soda deal which I'm not sure what it is now but was always reasonable. The veggie pizza is by far my favorite. Plus their desserts and breads are great too. They have a garlic loaf that is super flavorful and great for anything but we use it with fondue. read more

The best bakery in Davis by a mile! Their baguettes are the best and we have been buying them at the Davis Foods Coop for years now. Since the pandemic started, we go straight to the source and call ahead to make sure they have some - and they kindly will hold us a couple to pick up. They are so authentic - nice crisp exterior and good bite. Not fluffy and overly soft like you get at some supermarkets. My husband is European and can close his eyes and swear that this baguette is as good as anything in Europe. Super happy that it's always consistent, always good and oh yeah, their pizza and desserts are to die for (esp. the eclairs, which are my krytonite. I cannot resist them and am normally not a big fan of cream desserts. But my God, one bite and I am hooked). read more

I've had their pizza before. I've always known that their pizzas are really greasy but chose to ignore it because it is conveniently located next to the train station. If you're in a rush and are heading out of town, you can grab a slice of pizza to go and eat it on the Amtrak. I was craving some pizza and decided to grab a couple of slices of their pepperoni pizza here. I don't know if the quality of their pizza has significantly diminished or today was just an off day but the pizza was pretty burnt on the bottom. It tasted really bitter and like charcoal. Honestly, eating burn dough is really unappetizing and pretty bad for your health because those burnt pieces are carcinogenic. On top of the burnt pizza, I noticed that the cashier was dealing with the money transaction and din't bother to put on gloves to grab my slices of pizza. Yes, he used the wax paper but I noticed that his thumb went right on top of the crust which is pretty disgusting. Handling money and coins makes your hands pretty dirty. I think it is gross that he touched the pizza with his hands. Oh yah, I forgot, the woman who was baking goods didn't even acknowledge that I was there. She didn't even bother to call the cashier so I ended up waiting for a couple of minutes. I understand that she doesn't deal with the food orders but come on, she could have said something to her co-worker to inform him/her that a customer was in the shop ready to order. Village Bakery is a short, 10-minute bike ride from campus, and given its outward appearance, I didn't expect very much. The storefront is tiny - it's just a counter with a kitchen in the back and there are a few tables designated for customers on the outside patio. The patio seating offers a nice view of the historic Davis Amtrak station. When I actually got inside, I could see fresh-baked loaves of bread on the shelves behind the counter, a case of pastries, and a display of pizza slices (cheese, pepperoni, or veggie). I got the veggie pizza for lunch ($3.50 per slice), and I enjoyed it! The thin crust was soft yet chewy. I liked how they didn't suffocate the pizza with too much mozzarella and instead let the zucchini, mushroom, feta, onions and bell peppers speak for themselves. Overall, very tasty and enjoyable. I only wish that the pizza had been hot - it had been sitting out for a little while, so the cheese was on its way to the rubbery stage. And for $19 it was the biggest pizza and the best value out of our challenge, it was a close 2nd to 1st for us for taste. The breads there made fresh and super tasty. The place is a bit tiny, and can be hard to miss if you don't know where it is or you don't have GPS but don't let that keep you from going. The workers are down to earth and friendly. I'd say since it is a small shop it can tend to be hot in there but to get some food you should definitely stop by to check it out. I always like coming by here when I'm in town or passing through. The veggie pizza has always been tasty for years since the veggies are well cooked, the feta provides a nice salt component, and the balance of the flavors is awesome. Best pizza place in Davis hands down! I've ordered takeout from them about 5 times now and the quality is always spot on. The cheese to sauce to toppings ratio is perfect and the crust is to die for. You get a bit of char from the flames and it just adds so much flavor. My favorite pizzas from here are margarita, chicken, and surprisingly veggie. This is a tiny place right next to the Davis Amtrak. You will walk right past it if you aren't looking for it. This is more of a grab-and-go place, though there are a few tables outside. If you want to dine in, go to their dine-in location across from the theater on G Street. Ordered a chicken brick oven pizza during our visit. It was absolutely delicious! We split the pizza amongst three people and were extremely full afterwards. I wish they sold their gourmet pizzas by the slice, not just the basic ones. Gourmet pizzas are freshly made so the wait may be around 10-15 minutes. This is a tiny mom n pop bakery, LOTS of people coming in for single slice if pizza. They also have a small selection of baked goodies as well. I ordered the gluten free artichoke which had olives & goat cheese. It looked beautiful....but then I SMELLED it!. I had to get it to go, imagine the torture of driving 20 minutes with the most amazing aroma from a pizza you have ever experienced in 50+ years.
