Omg wow this place is absolutely beautiful, romantic, beautiful & reminds us of bistro in Paris. We celebrated our son's birthday and he lives nearby. Chloe the hostess was very nice and accommodating, Harry was such a nice person, professional, efficient and hardworking. Our son ordered starters and every single one was DELICIOUS . It was worth our drive from Glendale. Our waiter took the time to take us upstairs show us the cooking school and private dining. The patio in the back gave us a whole full tour. A stunning little bistro very cozy very romantic..

From the outside it looks like any restaurant but inside is very different. The way it was set up made it feel like you were in a small town courtyard. Very romantic feel so great for special date nights. Food here was great too! Started with some fries and french onion soup. And then the steak (medium rare) was cooked to perfection and the salmon was soft and juicy. Great variety of wine selection to pair with the meal.

Came here for a lunch date and had a great experience. We ordered the French onion soup, steak frites, and the Westwood Bowl, and everything was delicious. The French onion soup came out scorching hot and full of flavor, the steak frites hit, and the Westwood Bowl was super flavorful and filling. The ambiance was beautiful and unique, the service was 10/10, and I'd definitely come back to Violet Bistro.

The bar is fantastic, but the kitchen sucks ass

The bar is great especially Chloe, but the kitchen staff has no manners...perhaps it's a problem with management lol...forget Michelin stars, you'll be lucky to get 1 star on YELP!!!!!!!

The Violet Bistro is truly a special place. Located in a beautiful building, the Violet is a place that takes you back in time. Serving up beautiful English tradition. I went for their Haute Tea! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by an amazing host with so much positive energy that it seeped into the room! They greet you with a glass of champagne. I didn't get it instead. They gave me an amazing mocktail that reminded me of butterfly tea! Such a nice touch. They course everything out to the tea! No pun intended. From the savory to the sweet, every dish hit. The whole room is filled with the loveliest smell of baked goods the moment the oven opens! It makes your mouth water. I've never experienced anything like it. They even had a cute note waiting at the table. Huge compliments to the chefs! Chef Jesse & Yesenia, thank you for making an unforgettable experience. I can't wait to come back. To experience lunch and dinner service. This place is special.

A delightful French bistro with an updated twist on classic French cuisine. From the moment you walk in, you feel transported back to a chic Parisian spot - from the tastefully arranged artwork on the walls, to the elegant bar with antique mirror behind the panoply of liquor bottles, this place is elegant, cosy, romantic, intimate and fun! We ordered the duck à l'orange, steak au poivre, chicken and cauliflower with a side of delicious truffle fries. Finished off with a chocolate pot de crème and strawberry ice cream. Cocktails were great too. Attentive and pleasant service from Fabian. Merci!

Really great experience here! I came with a large group so you had to use a preset menu, though they were good options - two apps, two entrees, one dessert. To start we had the baguette and Cesar salad - both were high quality and tasty - they get the bread fresh daily. Chicken and cauliflower were the mains - both good. I don't eat curry but everyone around me raved about the cauliflower. Chocolate mousse for dessert was rich and flavorful. Staff was super attentive and very reasonable pricing for that sized party.

First time visiting and really enjoyed the ambience of this place. At the time we arrived they let us know that they had a private event at 7:15(arrived around 5:50ish). The workers never rushed us and i think it reflects at how well they manage their times with the tables. Our group decided to do drinks and small bites and when we were nearing the time they made sure to give us enough time for desserts. I got the violet sundae with vanilla and it was super good! The toppings on the oysters were so delicious as well. I also recommend trying their fries and baguettes. Really enjoyed my expierence here!

Very cute restaurant with a super cozy vibe. The staff and servers are extremely friendly and will help get you in and out of the restaurant as this is a goto spot for people trying to make a show at the Geffen Playhouse. The steak order was fantastic and even though you normally don't get salmon on tomatoes, it tasted pretty good. Also, the french fries were cut in a really cool way almost like chips, but they were served with just regular mayonnaise and ketchup, which was strange. I noticed there's just a little shortcuts here and there Whether it's the hot water picture they bring to you when you order tea or you think it would be a lot more vintage or the fact that you could order this amazing chocolate, mousse dessert and when they bring the check out to some people, I saw the servers had put Hershey's kisses on the little tray these guest's check. We thought that was so weird for this cozy little bistro to have you walk out the door with the taste of a cheap Hershey's kiss being the last thing you ate. What was that about? Either way, the food was delicious and it's good to have a choice like this around the neighborhood before I go see plays at the Geffen .

Omg get the steak - it was so good I didn't even get a photo. Also the Mizou salad is unassumingly DELICIOUS! So glad our waiter recommended it - he was right. This place is perfect for date night - romantic and cozy. Our waiter also told us about the cooking classes they host! Such a great idea. Will be going back soon!!

Opens at noon. Reserve a table in the outdoor atrium. The bread comes from DTLA. Loved the French onion soup. And the Basque cheese.

I love the drapes over the big picture windows which keep you connected to a social, public place without making you gaze out on an unattractive street. The cocktails are inspired. A few looked like something from a sci fi movie but tasted like they were made by a pro at the top of their game. The pre fix is all that is offered but they offer some add ons. My wife and I got the tofu and rice which was the perfect amount of food and allowed us to get two desserts. We had asked the waiter about two add ons but he steered us away, saying it was too much food. Although he did suggest we add the duck fat rice (which is it's own add on) to the tofu. We really appreciated his guidance there. We left full but not uncomfortable. All the food was very good there were no misses, but the local fish with preserved mustard greens and the roasted strawberry dessert were two of the best things I have eaten in many many years. This place is such a find!

After eating roughly a hundred Michelin stars around the world, my usual take on LA fine dining has…read morebeen: the plating is often very competent, but the soul is frequently out of office. Then I went back to Firstborn twice within three months. This newly listed 2025 tasting menu spot actually made me feel a little hopeful about LA fine dining again. The shiso with razor clam and beef cheek cochon, and the black cod with green Sichuan pepper mala noodles, are both full-on collisions between deep animal savoriness and sharp, vivid spice. Then dishes like roasted artichoke and morel stuffed with green peas bring the seasonality into clear focus. The menu is not huge, but every dish has a defined structure and a bold sense of movement. On paper, it reads a little mysterious and intimidating; once you eat it, everything suddenly makes perfect sense, and honestly, it gets addictive. The ingredient selection and handling are also seriously thoughtful. Take the aged duck main course. I am very much a "if there is duck on the fine dining menu, I'm ordering it" person, and I've had plenty of beautifully rich, tender duck breasts. But Firstborn's version, beyond being tender and luscious, had that Cantonese sense of "gan xiang" -- the sweet, savory aroma you get from naturally air-dried, aged meats. For a second, I had this flashback to going with my family as a kid to Xing Fu Lou in Wenquan for Lutian cured meats during winter solstice. Absurdly good. Calling it the Duck King of the West Coast does not feel excessive. On my second visit, the truffle and wild mushroom "gnudi" was also excellent. The moment it hit the table, that intense truffle aroma made me think of the deep, earthy punch of French Périgord black truffle. But then I thought, wait, where are they getting Périgord in June? Turns out they were using Australian winter truffle, perfectly in season. That sourcing logic is smart. It is not expensive for the sake of being expensive; it actually understands the flavor window. The fire-grilled lamb saddle on the second visit was just as strong. It preserved the soft, tender texture of the cut without losing that sweet, milky lamb flavor. Grilled over open flame to a rosy medium rare, the flavor, doneness, and ingredient choice all landed. To me, a great restaurant comes down to three things: concept, ingredients, and seasoning. Some fine dining places love making everything complicated, stacking seven or eight ingredients together, serving a dozen-plus courses, and by the end you feel exhausted and sleepy. Firstborn is the opposite. It is unconventional, but from amuse-bouche to dessert, every dish explains its own logic clearly. Final feeling after the meal: addictive, interesting, and absolutely worth coming back for.

California offered an immediate rush of light, space, and possibility. My memory is that when I turned my phone back on at LAX, my friend messaged to say he'd gotten us the hookup at Bestia. That dinner belongs to a chapter in which I spent considerable time in California and felt energized by the contrast with New York. My friend is highly discerning, with impeccable taste in food, design, and culture. He notices details most people miss, so when a place impresses him, I pay attention. From the moment I saw his message, I knew the reservation meant something. Even before we entered, Bestia's character was evident. Faded lettering crossed the corrugated metal facade, while brick walls and old loading doors preserved the warehouse's industrial history. Inside, enormous windows and garage doors brought light into a room shaped by glass, exposed ductwork, and warm amber pendants. When I fantasize about living in a loft, many of the attributes I picture are here, especially the incredible windows and connection to the street. Inside the restaurant, the dining room achieved a combination I rarely encounter. It had the table density and collective buzz of a great New York restaurant, but within a large, design-forward space closer in scale to something found in Chicago. New York creates energy through tight rooms, while Chicago excels at ambitious spaces with strong architectural identities. Bestia captured both advantages and made its considerable footprint feel alive and unified. We sat shoulder to shoulder at a pale stone counter facing the open kitchen. Golden era hip hop was playing, and A Tribe Called Quest still rings a very specific bell. I ordered the squid ink pasta, and it was exquisite, with enough depth and precision to command attention amid everything happening around us. We also spotted an unmistakably A-list celebrity, whom I will leave unnamed, making the night feel quintessentially Los Angeles. During that period, I often stayed at the Ace Hotel downtown, and the Arts District felt vibrant, raw, and full of possibility. The proximity to Skid Row could be deeply jarring, with severe hardship existing beside ambitious development and expensive restaurants. That contrast kept the neighborhood from feeling like a neat story of urban renewal, even as Bestia seemed to anchor its evolution. The warehouses and loading docks gave the area a character that no new development could convincingly recreate. Nearby, I also remember the American Apparel complex during its demise and the rise of impossibly cool Los Angeles designer John Elliott. His Escobar sweatpants and Villain hoodie helped define the kit of that moment; loyalists will understand. Los Angeles is a fickle city, drawn toward whatever is new and shiny, which makes Bestia's longevity especially impressive. Scene without substance is plastic, and Bestia earned its electricity through exceptional cooking, assured service, and a remarkable space; if I lived in Los Angeles, this would be one of the places I'd rely on whenever I wanted to impress someone. This is absolutely one of my favorite restaurants in the world.
