I was on the verge of blackout here; this was the same night I went to a few places in NYC that I reviewed with a simple, "Blacked out, must have been good," review. Undoubtedly one of my favorite bars in the world -- and if you don't mind a bit of self aggrandizing on my part, this includes boozing headquarters such as London, Buenos Aires, LA, Seattle, DC, Copenhagen, and Austin -- to name a few. What is there NOT to love about Vol de Nuit, except the precarious idea that it will be infused by the less desirable, namely tourists like myself? No matter, I'm a normal guy who likes cool shit and willing to soak up the instant Belgian culture that VdN provides. I became absolutely pished on Chimay, devolving into another french-scribed beer, and lower on still, until my mitts were soaked in frite grease and my gob impregnated with mussels. What a moment! The front room is a true delight, and suffused with the most charming of denizens -- staff included. One particularly friendly gentleman bought me a beer on account of some throw-away bet we cavalierly made with one another. I insisted he not buy, but insisted more that I accept. OK. These are the types of jovial and whimsical encounters that can be had at VdN -- likely a top ten bar worldwide, IMO. read more

I gotta say, for a "Belgian Beer Lounge," the selection at Vol de Nuit is pretty meager. If I've been utterly spoiled by Chicago's Hopleaf bar and Map Room, I'm sorry, but I can't give a glowing review to a beer bar that doesn't have Rodenbach or Duchesse de Bourgogne (2 of the 3 beers I actually drink). That's just ridiculous. What I can say is that I was happy with my Lindemans Framboise and while the selection was slim, everybody was able to find a brew or two to enjoy. The place was loud as hell on a Wednesday night, but we were lucky enough to score a large table for our group, although it was unfortunate we couldn't find a spot on the moody, sparsely-lit patio. The crowd seemed more meat-markety than I anticipated, but it's always entertaining to watch the ridiculous preening mating dances (when you're not a participant, especially). Our server was a surly woman. Maybe she was pissed they don't sell Rodenbach, too. If they could live up to their Belgian Beer Lounge claims, Vol de Nuit could be a three or four star joint. Right now, though, the selection and the service just don't warrant the extra points. It's in a great 'hood, has some decent beers and an interesting ambiance, but it's still just 2.5 stars for me. read more

I like this place, but it's almost like the beer selection is made by someone who haphazardly picked out beers just because they're Belgian and didn't really research them carefully first. Don't get me wrong, Leffe and Chimay are wonderful beers, but I guess that when a bar specializes in Belgian ales, I'd expect something a bit more exotic and rare. Belgium has hundreds of breweries, but Vol de Nuit only carries the most popular and widespread ales, ones you can get at a lot of other places. Also, Stella Artois (blech, the Budweiser of Belgium,) is lumped in with the rest of the Belgian beers. What the hell? As far as I know, Belgians don't actually drink Stella Artois. They just ship it to us dumb Americans, because we don't know any better. Also, the red light bulbs were just a bit too much for me, and I felt like I should be developing photos or something. Don't ask why I went to a Belgium Beer Lounge if I don't drink beer. It was more like a peer pressure. But I am glad I did. Like the rest, they did have wine for the non beer drinkers, but they also had a beer for the non beer drinkers. :) When I was offered the 'Framboise', I did not know what to expect. This rasberry flavored, non beer like beer was the perfect safe heaven. I drank a glass of that with some delicious Belgium fries and garlic sauce and fit right in with rest of the beer drinking crowd. read more

First off, everybody knows it's fun to go someplace that's secret. Or at least seems like it's secret. That's the allure of places with unmarked doors, and no signs, and going to meet the host who then refers you to a phone number to see if you got in or not. But this place is one of those that seems secret, but then you find out unfortunately it's not. If I had my druthers(this is an expression my mom uses, I'm not exactly sure what druthers are(because I don't have them see?)), I would keep this place under a magic mushroom and no one would know where it is but me. But I don't. So I can't. And I won't. So instead, you enter underneath an archway into a small little outdoor nook and then you follow the red lights and you're inside Vol De Nuit. This is a beer place. Strike that. A Bier place. Lots of tasty tasty Belgian beers. But the reason I like it even more is you can have a tasty pot of mussels along with some frittes. It's semi expensive, but a ticket to flavortown is always worth the price. The only cons to this little hidey hole joint? --It gets busy! It's not secret! --As a result, the bathroom line can get a little uncomfortable --As a result, it can be hard to find a comfortable seat. There's a lot of stools that are not so comfy. If I were you, I would come early, and snag one of the comfy couches and chairs in front, or get some real estate at the big table in the back. Or I'd sit outside when the weather is nice. And then I'd pretend only I knew about the place. Now, where's that giant mushroom again? read more

The looks of this place can be deceiving from the outside. You have to walk through a patio area before entering the bar. There's not much space inside so I can see how it can get cramped very quick. Luckily for us, it wasn't completely filled. Dark, candle lit, and relaxed best describes the ambiance. It's my first Belgian Beer Bar and I love it. They had premium beers straight from the tap. I'm going through a Belgian Beer phrase and this place provided an adequate selection to fill my curiosity. If only I had more time in NY. read more

"I'll only have just one beer. JUST one." Famous last words. Vol de Nuit is perfect for the Belgian beer enthusiast. There is Leffe, Palm, a lambic, and Delirium Tremens on tap.* The bottled beer selection is also comprehensive. You know what goes amazingly well with beer? Fries! And Vol de Nuit serves up delicious, crispy pomme frites - get them with the old style mustard. The most recent time I was here, it was the dead of winter, and therefore no one wanted to hang outside in the "beer garden" area. The place was packed. We did manage to snag a table in the corner and have a waitress serve our table, which minimized the amount of fighting crowds to get a drink we had to do. Service was a bit slow, but it was tolerable. 4 beers later and you couldn't get me to leave! * I really wish they had Kwak on tap, but mainly for the cool vessel. read more

Vol De Nuit is a little gem, a mutant freak of a bar. It's a Belgian Beer Bar, a seriously large one. There are two floors in the front section, a courtyard in the middle, and a back section. The owner is a colorful Bangladeshi man with great presence and an even greater collection of garish hats. The beer is absolutely fantastic, and this is coming from someone who generally does not love beer. Great mussels and fries too if you are feeling peckish. So why not give the damn place 5 stars? Well... A couple of days ago I was sitting just below the bar, on a couch, next to a large group of girls (5-6 of them). I heard faint screams, and felt rustling. The girls got up and left in a matter of seconds. I didn't quite understand why. Then, I saw something that is probably quite common in Manhattan bars- but which I would prefer not to see with my own eyes. A series, perhaps four or five, of massive, black cockroaches crawling on the wall. And down the wall. And next to people's legs. Upon seeing one, I laughed. Upon seeing two, or three, I quietly commented to my friends. It was when I was the entire community of cockroaches that I got up, in stunned silence, finished my beer, and left. It's probably a one-off. It won't deter me from drinking here, or (maybe?) even from... eating here. But it's obviously not a pleasant sight. Regardless, it's a great place, full of character, and the Bangladeshi's hats are fucking fantastic. read more

No really. i am, and not in a lame fb kind of way. im not even a beer gal (i mean i throw back some buds/sam seasonals, but ales, stouts whatnot. i dont even know what those mean) so when i was going to this place with people who LOVE beer, i was TOTALLY intimidated. who wouldnt be!? their menu might as well have been in sanskrit, i knew nothing of what they had. first of all. know this. most of what they have there will knock you on your ass before know it. the alcohol content in these beers are crazy! just a word of caution, i was there once and i swear i was sitting across from what i believe was a first date--and this chick was getting hammered. (knowingly? unknowingly? who knows.) entertaining, none the less. if you're not a beer person, get the framboise. the raspberry is the best. or get the moules frites and chow on that. AMAZING. i only wish they had bread to dip in the sauce! bottom line: dark, crowded and cramped. don't go with a crowd, and don't ever assume you'll find a seat outside. (i never have, but maybe i'm just unlucky!) don't drink too quickly or else you'll be silly drunk before you know it (unless thats your thing!) and if you're intimidated about the beer selection get a framboise. or a stella or something if you're a dude. its so dark, no one will notice what you're drinking :o) read more

When was the last time you drank beer and ate a dozen steamed muscles? Never. I don't know shit about Belgian food, but I like this place. A lot. It's really easy to walk right past this place and never notice it - do yourself a favor and seek it out. You think you know beer? I thought I knew beer... I had no idea that Belgium had over 30 beers to its credit - and everyone reckons Aussies and Germans are the drinkers. Also, who the hell knew that fries could taste so good?! Proper Belgium Beers! Went to this place for HH a few weeks ago and I could see it being a really fun spot when the weather is nicer because of the outside patio. It's kind of dark inside and drafty, but the service and beers were good. Nothing mind blowing but it's kind of a locals spot off the beaten path which was fun. Good french fries too! read more

Certainly divey and resembles what I imagine an opium den would look like in late 19th Century London. Seriously, it's like that. I've taken a few people here and reviews have been mixed. I once took a guy here who was completely horrified by the fact that I would even think of hanging out in a joint like this (sorry sir, I'll go back to twirling my hair and batting my eyelashes for you) and I've also taken people here who have loved its authenticity. This place is not a pretentious place in the slightest, and sometimes that is refreshing! As stated in my previous review, there is a ginormous book of beers that they give you when seated that has an extensive list of Belgian beers for you to experience. They also have other beers, but this is a primarily Belgian place and I must admit I prefer Belgian beer to German beer any day of the week. The end. P.S. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MEEEE!!! At least that is what I was mumbling all evening to myself and probably the reason for the wonderful headache that was blessed upon my newly inducted 25 year old self this morning. Being random and inconspicuous, the beer garden was perfect location for the start and (for some...the end) of the evening's festivities. I will try to recite clearly the experience, but forgive me for the haziness due to the over consumption of "fun-matter" (thank you college...my body isn't exactly what it was at the state when I turned 21). There's an outside and an inside, and the secret is the upstairs sitting nook, reached via staircase (bad idea when imbibing) towards the front of the establishment. I'm not sure if it's cash only... The crowd is definitely "NYU"-esk and no worries if you're an old fart like myself (geee...25....sounds like the title of the next "mid quarter life crisis" self help book), people don't judge here. they just judge the beer. here's to another year of yelping, and at least i have a review to commemorate the experience. read more

Just revisited tonight...as always, great draughts to choose from, including the reborn Leffe Brown, and excellent bottles including Rochfort 6, 8 and 10. Prices aren't too bad, the staff is knowledgable, friendly and prompt (thank you's out to Monica), and for a small place it still manages to be cozy, not crammed. read more

Been coming here for years, and can't complain when it regards having a good time here. Great place to hang with the NYU students who are a bit classier than the rest who are a bit snootier. Good Mussels and Fries with a variety of Aioli, great Belgium Beer, mediocre staff (this really came out last weekend when I went back, they hired some new chick who is a real jerk), and horrendous restrooms (I should leave that "s" off, since it is only one, and reeks like a Giant Stadium Urinal Cake, Oh that old summer job). I had drinks here to start the celebration of my escape from a certain company which shall remain unnamed. Reserved the back area without having to put down a CC and/or minimum. It's a belgian beer bar and I liked every single one I had though I unfortunately can't remember which ones I had. They even have Lindemans for the light weights! Got a few orders of frites as well which always complement beer nicely. Bar was pretty small, but the area was big enough for our party which was about 25 people I'd say. Good place to just chill and talk with friends. It's a little bit hidden as you have to walk in a bit through a small passageway with a courtyard and then walk up to the actual bar. I came on a Fri night and the place was packed by 9. We went and got food elsewhere and came back around 10:30ish. It was perfect timing b/c a couch had just opened up so we plopped ourselves down. I had a Leffe brown and then a Maredsous. Both tasty (though expensive!! $8) and it's always fun to have them in the right glass. The fries looked amazing so I'd go back to try them, but I'm still partial to the intimate atmosphere at Burp Castle. Vol de Nuit would be really fun in the summer when it's not too cold to stand or sit outside on the patio. But the bathroom situation is awful. There was definitely no toilet paper by the end of the night and there was never any paper towel or even a hand dryer, in addition to having to wait in line forever in the middle of the bar. One last piece of advice: Don't go up to the bartender and try to order an appletini like my friend did. It's not funny. read more

Wow. I never knew this place had a real name that wasn't The Belgian Beer Bar. I was first drawn here back in 2001? 2002? because they never carded me or any of my friends, and because they had such awesome beer. Then, as I kept coming, I fell in love with the red lighting, the outdoor benches, the fries from next door, the seating (that encouraged you to lean in or snuggle up), and the DT on tap. Any bar that has Delirium Tremens on tap certainly has my vote. Plus they even serve it in the special elephant glasses. Which is important not just cuz it's cute, but because every Belgian beer has its own glass, with a unique shape that's supposed to enhance the flavor of the beer. Back in the day, the beer bar was almost never crowded, and I usually came here for some peace of mind along with my beer, and a long catch-up type conversation. It's still a little weird when I see it packed with people, though this won't really stop me if my heart's set on pommes frites and pink elephants. read more

Being belgian, I am biased. This nestled-back red-lit bar is filled with the best TRULY belgian beers that people actually drink in my fathers homeland. Great, chill ambiance and the entry alley is like a bohemian old-city barcelona feel that I have not seen at any other bar in the city. Even though I haven't been in a while, my memories of this place are so strong that when any of my friends are venturing to NY, I tell them that they must go to this place. The ambiance, for me, is the most amazing part. I love that you slip through a little pathway between NY buildings to find this golden gem at the end of the path, slipped away in a romantic way. If you are looking for a European-like bar in the NYU/West Village/Greenwich Village area and you like Belgian beer, this is the place for you! The name means "Night Flight," presumably referencing the novel by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It has a wonderful outdoor courtyard, separating a small indoor bar in the front left and a larger indoor bar (though still somewhat small) in the back. There is normally a server for the courtyard seating (tables and chairs). Lighting is dim, red toned...music, often electronic. I've had some unfriendly service here before, but the choice beer and ambiance is wonderful. Even though the entrance is easy to miss, it's definitely no secret...get there earlier in the evening, if possible. When I lived in the West Village as a grad student, I was looking for bars nearby I liked, and this one topped the list...I didn't have to deal too much with the sports bar/university crowd, but also didn't feel like a baby among a bunch of working professionals (a lot of the West Village caters to the working professional, 30's-40's crowd). Again, if you liked the ambiance of bars you visited in Europe (cool but laid back, not overly trendy, with a smoke-friendly courtyard) and are looking for an NY equivalent...go here. read more

I've been going to this bar for two years now and it wasn't until I went to write a review of it that I even learned its name. That gives you an idea of the kind of bar Vol de Nuit is. From the red-light bathed unmarked passageway off the street into a courtyard, it vaguely calls to mind something medieval, almost like something out of Harry Potter, only a little sleazier, a little grittier. You might not even be sure it's a bar The bar has three sections, each with its own atmosphere: an open air courtyard that is great when the weather permits; the main room, lounge-like, dimly lit with (usually) eastern inspired electronic music and far bigger than you'd expect from outside esque; and a two story separate bar on the opposite end of the courtyard, better lit with a more industrial revolution-feel. They've got a quality selection of moderately priced Belgian beers as well as some great Belgian fries with good service. One of my favorite bars, though I think it's mostly the atmosphere that does it for me. Little tip: if the line for the bathroom gets long (which it does) head next door to the diner. read more

Vol de Nuit is a very unassuming little bar amid the potentially chaotic area that is West 4th Street. It is well-nestled between two other businesses and had you not looked for the tiny sign above the entrance, you might not realize it's there. In fact, the entrance is simply a narrow passage, opening into a tiny outdoor patio and then leading up to the bar itself. When we walked inside, we were told there were no mussels that night, just frites, which sucked because there are no other menu options. Nevertheless, we stayed because we wanted to see our other friends, and I've never been one to turn down beer. This place describes itself as a "Belgian beer bar," and it certainly lives up to that. There were a dozen or so beers on tap, and even more bottles. There was a variety of Chimay, Corsendonk, and the like. I went with the standard but great Tripel Karmeliet draft. Even M, who is not a beer drinker by any means, enjoyed it. D asked the bartenders if they had mussels (we still found it a little odd they'd be out so soon in the evening); they said yes, but later came back and confirmed what the hostess had told us. We ordered large frites with andalouse (spicy mayo) to hold us over until we left. The "large" frites were not that large of a portion but came in the cool paper cone with mayo and ketchup. They forgot to bring out our andalouse but quickly got it for us when we asked. The frites were good, but I do prefer Pommes Frites and Ray's. The bartenders were not overly friendly but were attentive for the most part. The bar is dim, cozy, and prompts drunken making out: my friend D admitted being guilty of this, and apparently so was the couple in the corner. I don't think I'd seek this bar out on my own, nor would I call this a destination bar in which to spend all evening, but I would not argue if someone wanted to come here. If you are looking to expand your Belgian beer palate, earn the badge on Untappd (shameless promotion here), or have a romantic nightcap, this is the spot for you. read more

Oh wow, I really liked this place. It's quite a find, hidden away off of W4th street where you'd expect it to *not* be great... The place feels like a European beer garden, kinda small, so grab your table early. Ample beers on tap, such as corsendonk, the belgian one I had. Delirium on tap. Umm... i dont think I need to say more. Where can you find it on tap anymore??? Delicious! The interior was very rustic with wood finishes throughout, kind of reminded me of a tavern. The two female bartenders were very friendly and helpful to my friend that needed directions on how to take the subway. read more

So I have to rate it okay, but my one disclaimer is that it is so dark and feels a bit grittier than it needs to, like they're trying to be super cool but instead it's just kind of dark and dirty but not that cheap. I don't drink beer - but I like their beer. They have flavours and variety for any taste. For the hard-core beer drinkers you will find great belgian and other euro beers. For girly girls like me, there are raspberry flavoured and chocoloate flavoured beers that are more than just tolerable - they are good! Also of note is the cute non-grungy pub atmosphere, and in warmer weather, they open up an outside part which makes for great summer enjoyment. All in all a good find. read more

At $6 for Stella and $9 for a Duvel, the beers are reasonably priced at this hip spot. This bar has a nice long patio and unassuming brick entry, plenty of seating and no loud music. Throw in the fact that they specialize in Belgian beers, and you have a recipe for success. Looking forward to my next visit. read more

This place has really cool vibe. I love how dark it is inside and the beer is just awesome, as can be expected from a specialty Belgian brew house. I lot of people complain about how crowded it gets, but I dare you to find any bar in the heart of the Village that isn't like that on the weekend. Food is great. This place is sooo sexy. Like, romantic, hot and bothered kinda sexy. Which makes this review kinda weird because that last time I was here was with a small group of friends celebrating my birthday... so I mean maybe not THAT kind of sexy but you get it. I hope. I heard about this place from some local friends and found it with my guy one night while exploring the Village. We sat down and discovered the small menu of the Belgian beer staples, some of which were on tap. Honestly, there wasn't anything super exciting or new on the menu but the Belgian "staples" are pretty damn good on their own. We had a few high ABV beers and called it a night. I noticed the front area of the bar that was outside and I liked how it was set up. It reminded me of a courtyard of a cool, tucked away European cafe. I would love to come here and sit outside at night-even SEXIER. Anyway, the bar never got too crowded while I was there with my group of 8, even on a Saturday night. We had a small couple of tables pushed together up front and had a kind and efficient server bring us our orders. It was perfect. Maybe I was swayed by the good company and the salacious feeling I get when I go there? I don't think so. Vol de Nuit, you're crazy man. I like you, but you're crazy. read more

Cheers to beers! This place has some great Belgian beers. You enter into a large set of doors and feel like you're entering into some old English courtyard. Keep walking. The bar is located in the back. Deep tones on the walls, wood seating and candlelight makes it really feel transformative and not at all pretentious (woohoo!). The bar staff know their beers. They get it that some folks may not know Belgian beers and may come in wanting some American lager. No worries. They'll kindly recommend the closest thing and you'll be on your way. They don't serve meals here, just some things to pick on so be mindful of that. That said, I've come here many times and each time enjoyed myself. The first time I came here was after a night of hopping to a few places beforehand, and when we finally got here, they were closing. They only had one draft working (which, lucky for me, was Delirium Tremins - a favorite of mine). Since I only got to throw back a beer real quick, I really didn't get a chance to sit back and relax at this place. So this past Saturday we were nearby, and the bar we were at wasn't quite what we were looking for, so I suggested this place. I'm glad I did. The first time I was here, I didn't realize that it was a Belgium Beer Bar. They had a very nice selection of Belgium beers. I ordered the same Delirium Tremins (since they don't serve that beer everywhere), but I also tried my friends Tripel, and it was really good as well. The menu said that they served Belgium fries, but the kitchen was closed for the night already. The bar isn't very large, with a sprinkling of tables throughout the entire space. It is very dark, with only red lights lighting the room, adding a sexy, secretive feel to it. If you are not looking for this place, you could easily walk by it. They have a small sign, then you must walk through an outdoor patio area to get to the indoor bar area. I have only been here during the colder months, but I would assume it would be really nice to sit in the outdoor patio area during the summer. For a Saturday night, it wasn't overly crowded, and was the perfect place to have a conversation. It would even work as a great date place. If you are looking for a nice Belgium Beer Oasis from all the frat type bars of the Greenwich Village, this should be your go to spot! read more

Vol de Nuit ("Night Flight") is a fantastic Belgian beer bar steps from the craziness of the West 4th stop's southern entrance. I'm by no means a regular, but I've come here often enough the past few years to feel a little bit of possession over it. And while the mostly baby-faced clientele (we ARE near NYU) could possibly detract from the seductiveness of the dimly lit room, there is a slight maturity here that is an asset. I was happy coming here at 24, and I'm still happy coming here at 28. The front patio is perfect on a warm summer night, but it fills up very fast, so secure your table early. The inside room gets packed as well, but it has so much character if you look past the crowds. As I mentioned, Vol de Nuit is very dark, and dotted with candles. It's a perfect date spot. Not only do they have a ton of strong Belgian beers, but they also have some wine too if you're more into that. read more

If you like ambiance that isn't a theme park or a designer's folly, this is the place to get to quickly. The atmosphere isn't created with decor and it's not just the red lights and the lack of any other lights. The feel is European, maybe during the cold war, but just an inkling of that. You can't enter unless it's for a tryst of some kind. The partially hidden sign hints that a password might be required. A narrow, unmarked passage takes you further into the bowels of some building, then up some stairs. There is an outdoor seating area (empty on a chilly night) and near the entrance some tables by a window looking onto the courtyard. The back windows look out onto something that doesn't even look like New York, adding to the air of mystery. The fries are awesome (though we seemed to have gotten the bottom of the fry bin when we went) and the beer is plentiful. We drank Chimay Blue all night. Service was excellent and efficient. I am in absolute shock that it took me so long to finally go and check this place out! But, at the prodding of a friend, and the need to help another with a cover letter, we decided everything would be much better off over some Leffe and Chimay. I loved the courtyard, it felt like walking off into a small side street in Barcelona. It actually confused me a little when the wait staff spoke English to me...I was all ready to bust out my espanol! Good service, yummy beers, we sat outside for a few hours, and it was swell. Ducked inside to use the restroom...looked a little too dim and dark but maybe that's because it's still summer. Will probably be spending many many an afternoon/early evening here! read more

After taking a few strolls around the block trying to find this place, we finally found it!!! The facade seems to blend in quite nicely with the rest of the block, so you may miss it. I had the pleasure of going to this place way back when and truly appreciated their beer selection. I must say I am quite impressed that Lindemans Framboise was on tap! For those of you who have not tried this juicy beer, it is HIGHLY recommended. It tastes closer to a raspberry daiquiri than beer! As you walk into the front part of the bar, there is an open seating area where you may stare at the stars, but make sure you get here early because it fills pretty quickly after rush hour. The fries were good since it was something fried to munch on, but I've had way better fries by far. There aren't too many places like this bar left in the city. I love how it feels like an old castle while you're lounging here. It's worth checking out if I were you! read more
