Well, been going to W for quite a while. Went this week and while the food is still good they removed most of the great stuff: no risotto , curry pasta with chicken, beef short ribs. The substitution of the Palermo test menu has made this bistro more like a dinner. Disappointed, the uniqueness is gone. read more

Newly opened in Henke Wine's old place, the team behind Ivory House on Harrison have gone it again. Where Ivory House is more upscale dining, W Bar + Bistro caters for the more relaxed, but still terrific food. Refusing to cater for the cheap crowd, demonstrates that Westwood is way more open to good dining than folk would otherwise give it credit for. The food was superb - I went for a Tuna Poke Bibimbap Lettuce Wrap and followed it with a superb Grilled Salmon glazed with a lemon & honey glaze, with on a bed of dirty rice pilaf and charred green beans. Meanwhile my wife got the Brie Puffs and the Sirloin Steak Frites with Arugula, tomatoes and horseradish aioli. All for were totally delicious. Bonus was even meeting up with Joe Henke and his wife on the table next to us. That and with both Jamie and Elise from Henke Wine now working at W, made it feel like Ric & Frank had created a new home for everybody. Another hit for ivory house. The food and the atmosphere was both good. our server was super nice. A little expensive for what you get. $14 BLT with no french fries was a little much but at least it was delicious. More upscale feel and I think brunch will be good when they launch it. read more

The location is very close to my new home and it looks impressive. They have a neat shaped bar and a friendly staff that makes you feel welcome and shows you to their seat. The service was pretty good but the food was bland and a disappointment. I had linguine Alfredo with chicken strips. I am Italian and I like my pasta but I-didn't eat much of it. It was bland and mushy. I have a rule for myself is that I won't finish a meal unless I really like it. A lot of restaurants over feed us and I travel a lot so I've decided to order lesser portions. The portion size of the meal was bountiful. I just didn't like it. My wife and mother in law had the salmon and made the same complaints. It's one of the few times I felt like I wasted my money. No one thought their dinner was very good. I'm sorry. They have a neat location and the ambiance is appealing although it doesn't take much for it to get loud even though it was only half full. They have a lot of the pieces necessary to be successful except the quality of the food. The food was a 3 on a scale of 1-10. This local, non-chain restaurant is a welcome addition to the west side. The serving sizes are quite large and there are PLENTY of vegetarian and vegan options. Fried green beans and Brie puffs to start with and both were a hit. I had the Koren spicy chicken sandwich with the vegan chicken (Impossible). Extremely flavorful and filling. My in-laws got the regular Korean spicy chicken sandwich and it was huge. They loved it. The BBQ Grippos Mac and cheese as a side was a perfect choice for me. They had some tasty looking cocktails that I will try when I come back. The restaurant has a nice size to it and is comfortable. They probably would not have a problem seating larger groups. We went in for brunch on a Sunday, and the place was mostly empty. Host said reservations are recommended, but he would seat us. Yeah, don't give me that crap, there's no one here. They've redecorated since it was Henke's, but that basically consisted of slapping some new fixtures up and covering the floor with vinyl hardwood flooring. The floor still slopes fairly badly from front to back, and our table was kind of ridiculous. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. We got the brunch burger, chicken and waffles, and chicken tender and Mac and cheese. The chicken tender and Mac and cheese, is very delicious, but not exactly a kid's menu item in it's current form. First, it's just a breaded chicken cutlet, not exactly a tender, so you'll have to cut it up for your kids. The Mac and cheese is made with super Smokey cheddar, which I found delicious, but kids, not so much. So that was a big waste of food. The chicken and waffles is a very large portion of food. It's two fried chicken breasts and two waffles. The waffles are not great. They're way too dense and kind of gritty. The spicy sauce isn't really spicy, and has more of a vinegar flavor, but it's good. The hot honey is also good. I'd recommend getting the sauces on the side your first time out, because otherwise they'll pour it all over. The brunch burger was delicious. It's a very straightforward burger with an egg, cooked to your liking, mayo, cheese, and pork belly. I was expecting a much crisper pork belly, but it was more the consistency of slow cooked rib meat. I got fries, since the burger doesn't come with anything, and they were very good. Overall, we enjoyed our brunch and we would come back again. We felt the price matched the quality of the food, which we haven't been finding at a lot of places lately. read more

This place has been here for 2 months and I just recently heard about it. Taking over the beloved Henke Winery building, they had big shoes to fill. The location is definitely one filled with nostalgia. Also, sitting right next door to Nation, which is well established, I definitely wondered at the ability of this little addition to Westwood to distinguish itself. The graffiti on the outside is fun and so Cincinnati. Upon entering, I noted the wheelchair ramp which is always a welcome sight in one of these older Westside buildings. I ordered a lemon drop and bistro burger. The kiddo ordered the grilled cheese from the kids menu with fries. Our drinks were delivered quickly and even our crazy request to move to the bar area where we could see the Bengals game was quickly and easily accommodated. The kids menu is good, and the servings large enough for older kids. The server recommended the bistro burger, but also the grilled cheese with the short rib added. I would say that it's a safe bet that anything including the short rib is a sure thing!!! It is so tasty! The sauces were also very good and unique. The lemon drop was fine, but I would probably try something else next time. The addition of cherry to it sounded good, but led to a kind of muddled appearance. It tasted nice tho. Sweet and tangy. I also appreciated the half sugar rim so I wasn't drinking sugar with every sip. Overall, if you've visited Ivory House on Harrison, you know that you can expect good things from their ownership. The cocktails were well-poured and spot on. Overly insistent waitress seemed more intent on turning over table, but mellowed as time went on. Inclusion of a steak entree to dinner menu would help for those that are interested in more than pub food. The noise level in our particular dining are became intolerable as the meal progressed, in no small part due to the stark walls, wooden floor, and the ceiling which acted more as an amplifier than as a sound deadener. The noise level around the bar was actually lower than our dining room. Given this is a bistro, I wasn't expecting the hushed tones of a cathedral, but neither was I wanting the din of a singles bar on Friday night. The ambience needs work. A bit pricey. Fish and chips plus kimchi salad, Salmon, two Old Fashioned, a pour of Cab, plus Brie app came to $125. read more

We were seated in the back room which had 24 other people in it between all the tables, and it was unbearably loud. I could barely hear my friend talking, and we were screaming to try to be heard...along with everyone else in the room. Love the addition of this place to the Westwood neighborhood! It's definitely a nice vibe and has plenty of food options. We had the fried green tomatoes, poutine and Brie puffs for appetizers. The fried green tomatoes were TO DIE FOR. The poutine was also excellent and huge. Could consider ordering it for a meal if you have time to take a nap after dinner. Brie puffs were good, but I'm personally not a huge Brie fan. My husband and I shared the steak frites and the chicken club. Both meals tasted great. The chicken sandwich was incredibly messy, so I had to eat it with a knife and fork but no biggie. The only downside is that the sandwiches don't come with a side. They look sad and lonely when they arrive alone on a plate. I would highly suggest that sandwiches come with a side of dressed mixed greens (or something). IMO, paying $12-$14 for a sandwich and having to add a side of fries for $5 is getting a little steep. Also charging 50 cents for a side of sauce just seems tacky. I've been wanting to check out W for months now. We are huge fans of Ivory House and I was curious what the "bar and grill" concept might be like from the same owners of IH. Honestly, I have mixed thoughts on this one. We walked in without a reservation around 7:15 on a Friday night. There were a few bar tables available (high tops) and plenty of seating at the bar, which is where we chose to sit. First, Beverages. They have some interesting drinks on the menu. We were out for a beer, so we appreciated that they had a couple of West Side beers on tap - an amber and common ale - our favorites. So that was nice and it was just what we were looking for. I was a little surprised that High Noon was the only "vodka seltzer" option given the focus on local breweries - was hoping for a Sway. Only after I ordered though, I looked to the right and saw a chalkboard with additional drink options along with an "up next" spot for the next beers coming. I saw a variety of options not on the menu. This chalkboard was kind of hidden on a wall not many people would see - bummer! Oh well. My beer was still crisp and delish. Next up, food. We were not starving, but also not sure what to order. We decided to really venture out and try the poke lettuce wraps Oh my gosh! They were amazing. Served on soft bib lettuce, they were easy to eat, packed with flavor, and finish with a bite. There was generous amounts of tuna poke and I was so happy we decided to try them. Next up, we were kind of stumped on what to order. They have a couple of burger options and a grilled salmon, but the rest of the menu felt really heavy (fried chicken, friend chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese, etc. All the remaining appetizers were also deep friend. I suppose we could have gotten a salad, but it just all seemed to greasy and heavy. I realize we're in a bar, but I've been to plenty of bar and grills that offer more options that aren't quite so heavy. We decided to try the fried green beans and honestly, I thought they were awful. We should've just gotten French fries. Somehow, they felt more greasy than actual fries. The horseradish aioli was super tasty, but the green beans and the batter were tasteless. I'm a bit on the fence with the place. I've heard mixed reviews from friends, but went in with an open mind. And I don't believe in writing off a restaurant with one try. I think if I was going for greasy food, then this might be the place, otherwise, I think I'd come in for a drink and then head elsewhere. Party of 3, we ordered two different burgers and the fish & chips, side of Mac & cheese, and a house salad. The burgers were large and tasty. The burger with the short ribs could have used some lettuce & tomato to cut thru the richness. The mac & cheese was very creamy & rich, and oddly covered in a Grippo's BBQ crumble. The fish was in a thick, tastless unseasoned batter drizzled in a sweet glaze (picture funnel cake fried fish)-- definitely not what we expected. We did not enjoy it. The kimchi slaw and the pickles are also off putting. How can you mess up pickles? The noise level was loud, and it was freezing in the bay window. Honestly, we couldn't wait to leave. Being under the umbrella of Ivory House (which we love), we expected so much more. Probably won't be back. read more

My husband and I stopped here for the first time for appetizers and dinner with friends. We sat in the bar area as happy hour runs from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. daily but only in the bar space. Our server Lacy was prompt and polite with taking our orders. The bartenders were a different story. For some reason they could not produce four drinks at one time. My drink was a cosmopolitan and that came out first. The other drinks were straight pours of bourbon and vodka but they trickled from the bar to our table. I ordered the fried green tomatoes as an appetizer and they were delicious. The aioli sauce and burrata cheese on top added an unexpected ingredient. I ordered Aubrey's grilled cheese as my main and it was disappointing. None of the main sandwiches came with any kind of sides, you had to order french fries etc separately. My grilled cheese did not have the flavor that I was expecting from the different cheeses listed and it was exceptionally greasy. The other three diners with us all ordered the bistro burgers and said that they were delicious and perfectly cooked. The restaurant itself had a nice atmosphere at least in the bar area where we were sitting and had some interesting things on their menu. I think that they really need to work out their issues with cocktails at the bar so that everything is produced at once for one table. We might try it again in the future if we were over that way. read more

Had lunch with wife for the first time at W Bar Bistro. Fell way below expectations with a Korean Chicken sandwich. The meat was very hard, grisly.and over breaded Waitress apologized for the quality of the sandwich I left on my plate. Offered a free dessert which we did not take. Would think your menu/options would be fine tuned by now? The westside really needs some nice new options for dining. I am not sure, I will be back for a second meal. read more

One bartender attempted to serve the entire bar and the entire restaurant resulting in inordinately long delays for drinks. coordination between kitchen and bar was off. For this price point (more than $55pp) one would expect quite a bit more. Raise service quality or lower price point. We've been to W Bar & Bistro twice now and the food has been excellent. The service though has been very unsatisfactory. The first visit we had a party of 6 and it took 2 hours from the time we sat down until we left the restaurant. Our server was not attentive at all and would disappear for long periods of time. The second time, again a party of 6, it took almost 2 hours again for dinner. We had the same server and again she was not attentive during our meal and would just disappear for long periods. She forgot to deliver one of our meals and said she would go get it and be right back. We never saw her again until she came and asked if we were ready for our checks. She totally forgot to bring the meal! She was very apologetic and the manager eventually came to our table and apologized and gave a $30 gift card to our friend and comped his meal. I don't know if the issue is with this one server or if it is with the restaurant. The food is excellent but plan a lot of time to be there. read more

Went on a Friday night with three friends, and sat in the middle room. This room is extremely loud (echos when people are talking), and hard to hear people at your table. The service this night was poor, the server rarely came by to see if we needed more drinks (which we did), had to go to the bar and order drinks throughout the evening. I ordered the fish and chips, thinking that would be easy to do, came out cold, unseasoned, and the fries were cold and soggy. we did order the onion rings as an app, however they too were cold and greasy. Unsure if we will return, but if we do and there is improvement, I will report the good as well. read more

Service was terrible to say the least. Went there Sunday 19 November at 6:30 pm. We called ahead and made reservations so they were well aware of a large group (15 people) coming. We had 4 different group of adults, so wanted the checks separated. The waitress said we could address that at the end, she just wanted our order. She took apps orders and drinks. Never offered us water, and only brought back the drinks she could carry, nothing from the bar. After a while, almost to the point of me going to the bar, another staff person (possible manager) came and took the bar order again and brought the drinks. Appetizers arrived shortly after. She then took our dinner order. That started out in an orderly manner then she suddenly stopped, went to her station to put in the order and continued in a different manner. Food order in, everything ok with help of manager. Now the food comes out and the disaster continues. One member not served and another missing a side. Had to find her to get the other entree. As far as the missing side, her response was "yeah, we are out of green beans" and never offered a substitute, so he asked for a salad and she never brought any type of dressing, so he had to ask again, and said just bring any kind. By this time, with the bad attitude and poor service, we were just happy to get something to eat and get out. Well, the waitress couldn't even get that right. Asked for a to-go box, never came. I had to go to the bar with my plate and ask for a box. Remember splitting the bill, well that wasn't happening either. With an attitude, she said the best she could do is split two ways, total bill in half. We had five different families there and she knew it. As we were exiting, once again she had to walk past us and with attitude and rudeness, let us know she walking past. We spent near $600 dollars and not one happy person in our group. We come from Maine, Centerville, Eastgate and White Oak and will never gather there again. Service was terrible and with an attitude. Food was good. But do to the waitress and her attitude, we can't recommend going there. read more

The service was top notch. I requested a better selection of NA beers and the manager said she was working on it. It's this type of flexibility that makes establishments THRIVE as opposed to big chain restaurants. No "red tape" to jump through. The Men's room in the basement is a negative. My elderly father could NEVER get down those stairs and he goes to the bathroom frequently. The fresh oysters were amazing. When the main entrée came out, I had ordered the filet mignon dinner, the portion was very nice sized. It was served with parmesan crusted fries that tasted like they just came from the freezer. I tried the filet and was extremely disappointed. There were NO seasonings on the steak what-so-ever. It was just a hunk of filet. I have done more than my share of cooking filet mignon and, at the BARE MINIMUM, used sea salt and coarse pepper. Nope - nothing. So this failed experiment was a good learning lesson.
