This was an experience I will never forget, with no expectations, me and my gf were pleasantly surprised of a gem this was. If you know who 'hawaiisfoodieking' (aka 'Mr. Mean') is on Instagram, even he said in a post back in Oct 2022 that 'all his life... and he never came hea'... Just like me, and I'm *older than* Mr. Mean! Well, because I've been an official FB follower of Waikane Store for over a year now and see all the posts that one of the owner's post to FB, Alden Tokuzato --- I finally said recently that I was going to go there, even though I live somewhat far away in Waipahu. In one of Alden's posts, I had commented that I was planning to come on a certain date (with my brother) the following week as I got jealous of seeing and reading of the famous 'maki sushi rolls' and 'fried chicken'. Well that time came this past Thursday (after visiting our parents gravesite at Hawaiian Memorial Park), so we came just after the 10 am opening (just as Alden's response to my FB comment said to come). Now that I had to park, I had no idea 'how I had to park' since there aren't any lined stalls, so just park anywhere similar as to how others park and NOT 'hog' more than a necessary amount of space so that others can park their vehicles too (there were only two other cars when we arrived). Going in, I didn't realize until one is inside their store 'how small' it is... surrounded by various items for sale (drinks, snacks, etc). Alden walked down the steps from the kitchen (left of front entry) and shouted my name (like he knew me!) and he and his mom, Nadine (nay-deen) began a long friendly conversation with me. Gosh, it was like we had been long time neighbors that hadn't seen each other in a long time ! We put in our separate orders (I was smart enough to read past Yelp reviews and Google reviews that said 'ohh, how they wish they'd order more than what they had ordered as it was soo tasty)' --- so I ordered what my eyes said to do ... a pound of their mochiko chicken (going in there, many reviewers had said 'fried' chicken, 'teriyaki' chicken, or chicken karaage --- but it's mochiko chicken that they prepare and sell to their customers, two rolls each of their futomaki (tuna/carrots/egg) and their Portuguese sausage maki sushi. I didn't know what the current pricing were for either the maki sushi rolls or the mochiko chicken as pics/descriptions/photos I saw on Yelp that did indicate pricing were from 2019 or earlier --- so I expected (no, guaranteed) the prices were going to be higher than the $5 per roll of maki sushi and the $13.50 per pound of mochiko chicken! I was so curious about the Portuguese maki sushi tastes ever since I saw Alden's video on his FB Waikane Store page back in May 2022 about 'sista 'cela'? from Makaha loving that particular roll since she said she didn't like Colman's mustard. Both took turns cooking, while the other was taking our orders and while we waited minutes while our foods were pau being made, we looked around the small limited walkway to see what items were sold. As Nadine was packing our foods, she told me that they serve their chicken in these small rectangular trays (you know, like how mostly all local okazuya delicatessens put some of their entrees in) - so since I had wanted about a pound of the mochiko chicken, she explained that they put the pieces into two trays. She provided a medium weight paper package with handles to hold my four rolls of maki sushi and two trays of mochiko chicken. As I looked inside the package and felt the rolls, I had to say out loud how warm to the touch were those rolls (as they were JUST made). Well, when she rang up my purchase, it was still just $5 each for the maki sushi rolls ! Didn't know or ask how much were the mochiko chicken were per pound since the objective while there was just to get the chicken to eat! Oh by the way, I asked about the Russian tea cookies as I read that was a favorite of other reviewers, but sadly Nadine said she did not bake any after it ran out. I told them I will come back for those cookies as I heard good things on Yelp and Google ! Ok so as I am back home, i take things out from the package and see the different packaging for the futomaki vs. the Portuguese sausage rolls. The futomaki rolls were wrapped in wax paper while the Portuguese sausage rolls are in saran wrap. Like Alden said, the maki sushi tastes vinegary than usual, but that didn't faze me, both tasted dee-licious ! Fresh, fresh tasting is the word to describe the futomaki roll pieces and the Portuguese sausage pieces (which I thought would be fried) looked to be boiled. The Colman mustard included was NOT overpowering, but really... complimented the taste of the Portuguese sausage (even my brother texted me his similar comments). It was so novel (since we never ate it before) but would gladly have it again ! As for the mochiko chicken, it didn't look like any other mochiko chicken I've seen served as from its appearance, they were pan fried in oil, not deep-fried. TastiER than any other mochiko chicken I've had in my life - no lie ! A must ! read more

Good: Very friendly customer service Bad: Fried chicken very greasy & oily & salty. Portuguese sausage maki sushi rice was hard & most likely a day or two old. Portuguese sausage was not fried and placed directly into the maki sushi roll, so the sausage tasted bland & rubbery. Imagine what a spam musubi would taste like if sliced spam directly from the can were used. Yikes! Not very good ! We bought 2 orders of fried chicken (like 1 piece of thigh size each) 1 tuna maki sushi roll & 1 Portuguese sausage maki sushi roll costing little over $50. Quite pricy for not great tasting food. I love to support small businesses. This hole in the wall - mom and pop shop is just that! They carry other local businesses products as well. Of all the many times we've came here. We've always gotten the chicken fresh out the pan Kine. It was always hot and a little maki sushi always hit when u starving and trying to hold urself till u reach the shrimp trucks lol. We hardly ever go exploring beyond Waipahu but happened to be in this area and was hungry. Upon chance we stopped by and so happy we did. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by very friendly people. Welcoming us in and even giving us samples to try. We picked up chicken, two different kind of maki sushi, and split banana cream soda and strawberry habanero soda. Once we got home, we grind it all. Miss these small mom and pop kind of shop. The space is dark and crowded but the warmth of the owners shines through with service that epitomizes Aloha hospitality. Auntie arrived with a generous sample tray of their tuna salad makizushi and pieces of fried chicken. The sample could have been a meal in itself! "How did you find us?" she asked. I told her Yelp and she quickly replied "Have you checked in yet?" Pro tip#...check in! You will be given a free bag of Hilo made One-Ton Chips. "We only serve makizushi and boneless fried chicken legs" Auntie explained. So we ordered everything on the menu! The Portuguese Sausage makizushi is complimented with a layer of hot mustard that plays nicely off the seasoned rice. The Tuna Salad is rich with mayo, comforting and homey like a hug from Grandma. A note about the rice...their seasoned rice is amazing.The vinegar really shines through elevating the makizushi's humble ingredients. The fried chicken is next level. This is not battered fried chicken...more of a teriyaki like marinade that imparts sweet and umami like an explosion of flavor. Bits of crispy skin and juicy dark meat make this some of the best fried chicken I've ever tasted. Perfect stop for a picnic lunch as you make your way up the coast or before a visit yo Kualoa Ranch. The parking could be hard but you shouldn't have too much of a hard time waiting for a spot since it's a grab and go. I have been coming here since the late 90s to get one of the most delicious Mochico chicken on this island. Alden has been serving up great food for the last three decades. The Michico chicken is cooked in batches and you buy it by the pound . Huge boneless pieces one order is perfect for two people. But I usually buy 2 to 3 orders. That way I have leftovers! The outside crunchy bits are my favorite. The meat is juicy and tender cooked just right, paired with their maki sushi, it's the perfect bite. The very best of beach food! It's in a great location, ( on the way out to Kualoa Beach Park, ) just look for the squiggly man. Located right on Kamehameha Highway, parking could not be easier, just pull up right in front of the door. You enter the small tiny little shop and it screams mom and Pop. I'm so glad that they have survived the pandemic, and are continuing to serve the people of Oahu with amazing food Alden is also a great entertainer. Look for his CDs in his shop and support local. If you find yourself on a cruise around the island, be sure to stop by and pick up their Mochico chicken and Maki roll. Oh did I mention they have a Portuguese sausage maki roll too? We had Portuguese sausage sushi and the famous chicken dish, which was luckily boneless. This is a takeaway only place, but there are many areas nearby to dine al fresco. Yelp reviews led me to Waikane Store. My sisters are home visiting and we were driving to Kaneohe to visit a cousin. He lives near the Waikane Store. This is real local family run store with a lot of Aloha. They are known for their chicken & maki sushi. I checked in with Yelp and got a bag of Won Ton Chips, the owner who runs the front of the Store was happy to hear I was a Yelper. I loved that she overhead me telling my sister that they were known for their chicken, while we were waiting in line. She went into the kitchen area to get a couple sample pieces for us to try. The guy before us, forgot to pay for his bottle of water that was left on the counter. He left after paying for his order of food. When he came back in, the owner told him to just take the "large bottle of water", of course he insisted on paying. How nice is that! The chicken and maki sushi did not disappoint. Very homemade and delicious. To be honest, there are other places with good chicken and Maki Sushi. However, The food here is special, because of the Mother and Son who keep their family business/tradition going for everyone to enjoy.
