Don't hate! At first glance, Waipahu Cafe looks a little run down, unremarkable from the outside, cramped on the inside. Diner-style, you have the option of booth seating or bar seating. Decor feels a little dated. BUT. Where they lack in aesthetics, they more than make up for in family feel and deliciousness! I'm not positive about this, but it seems as though Waipahu Cafe is a family run diner, and that's part of the vibe that makes it so endearing, like the kids are waiting and drooling as they watch mom run around the kitchen cooking some of her most legendary eats. We came for brunch, and I ordered the Loco Moco Deluxe, which was EVERYTHING. WOW. A perfectly seasoned hamburger patty, eggs over medium, rice, mac salad, all over rice, and kimchi on the side. I literally scraped every last bit from my plate, it was incredible! My husband got a mixed plate with kalbi and katsu over Waipahu Cafe's legendary kimchi fried rice. There is a reason why this kimchi fried rice is legendary, there is no comparison. It was perfect! All in all, was not disappointed in trying out this local hole-in-the-wall. This has been our favorite place to have breakfast. My husband's favorite loco Moco with fried rice. Their Kim Chee was the best. And I loved their yook gae jang, which was made with clear noodles. We went there yesterday and the food was different, and the prices significantly higher. We suspected new owners, and reading through the comments it sounds like we were right. Everything on the menu looks great from kimchee fried rice omlet to loco moco or the simple pancakes. I loved the kimchee fried rice omlet, they don't put peas or carrots so that was a plus. Great food. Great people. Great service. The four stars was for the location. We had a hard time finding this place because the directions on Yelp (and I can't correct the location) was wrong. It's next to a laundromat at the corner (also near RAC). We were a party of 10 and luckily had no problems and still sat next to each other. The food was delicious and came out fast. We placed our order and the food wait was minimal. I haven't eaten hot cakes in years. I asked for 1 pancake and a side of extra crispy bacon. John orders a Clubhouse and a side of crinkle fries. Fried rice omelette with kimchi on the side, coffee and side meat jun. in my opinion the fried rice omelette has been and still is the best I've tasted. The kimchi was on point as well. I'm not to much of a meatjun kinda guy but when my daughter ordered it on the side and I tried it well I honestly can say this is the best meatjun I've ever had as well and the sauce just takes it over the top. Service I noticed isn't to good if nana is working because you'll see her once and then she's going to talk story with select patrons lol. The young man who was cooking had to come to check on me and refill my coffee and he rang me up as well. If the owner is working than she's much more attentive to her patrons as well as the young man cooking but she wasn't working when I went to dine in. I happily indulged a craving for her kim chee fried rice omelet ($8.50) one Sunday morning. When I told her I had driven all the way from town just for a taste of her cooking, Ms. Sun seemed genuinely surprised, and apologized for not delivering. Delivering?! Uh,...thanks for the sentiment, but I think 10 miles might be a little out of your way. Let me just start by saying that this place is tucked behind the 7-11 next to a laundry mat, not exactly "in" the Waipahu shopping plaza with Saver's, it's more to the "left" of it. Drove around the entire shopping plaza very slowly before I finally found it. It looks a little "ghetto" from the outside, with questionable characters hanging outside the laundromat next door, and is kinda old, and dingy on the inside, but don't let that deter you from eating here. The breakfast here is nothing less than amaaaaaaaaazing! As soon as I entered and sat myself down, the Korean mama-san brought me a glass of iced water and a menu, and asked if I was dining alone. I told her I was waiting for a friend. She smiled and said okay. Within a few minutes she came by with a pot of coffee and offered me some, which I declined. So sweet I tell you! (I'm not a big coffee person unless it's filled with tons of cream and sugar, so what's the sense). While I waited for my friend who was running behind cause they too were having a difficult time locating this place, I thoroughly enjoyed the eclectic mix of people coming in and out of here. People ranging from families, couples, to construction workers, to people that work retail in the area that were coming in to grab takeout. I was really amazed at how well the mama-san was handling her customers, and food orders! From what I could tell, she was a one man band until lunch time! She was serving, bussing, cashiering, answering the phone for take out orders AND cooking!!! She didn't look in the least bit stressed out! Damn! I would be! I'd be a nut job! (Well I am a nut job...but just check me into Kahi Mohala at that point)! Watching her handle her business was very impressive to say the least. She finally got some relief around 11...when another cute old mama-san reported for duty, and took customers orders, and bussed from then on. When my friend finally arrived, mama-san was watching, and came over right away. Maybe she felt sorry for me waiting for my friend for so long. We both ordered the kimchee fried rice omelette, and we split an order of French toast! I just couldn't resist! So glad we splurged! It was worth every calorie! The omelette was huge and the Kim chee was just perfect, not too hot so you couldn't taste anything else, and the fried rice was delish! We could have shared! I know for next time, that way we can try other stuff too! The French toast was equally delicious. It was pretty straightforward, no frills...but the taste was just amazing! True, old school diner flavor...I cannot replicate the flavor of the egg mixture on the French toast. I can't wait to go back for lunch and try other things on the menu. With such great food, COMPLETELY reasonable prices, and really awesome, friendly, speedy service, I'm sure this little hole in the wall will be here for the long haul. read more

For my 400th review, this little hole in the wall deserves it. Only open for breakfast and lunch, Waipahu Cafe is tucked in a tiny unassuming strip mall off Farrington Hwy which houses Jolibee, a laundromat and a Thai place. This place is famous for its kim chee fried rice omelette. It's a small little diner with only a few tables. You seat yourself and it is run by two nice little cute Korean ladies. Other options are all kinds of breakfast dishes: pancakes, bacon, eggs done your way, etc. to local lunch items such as chicken katsu, kal bi, hamburger steak, etc. I ordered the kim chee fried rice omelette and damn was it tasty! Tons of fried rice and the omelette was huge! They also give you a side of kim chee made of regular cabbage. It was oh so tasty and I left with bad breath, but I didn't care. Most dishes on the menu are under $10.00. There's plenty of parking if you go in the morning. Service was slow but friendly but there are only two ladies working. The place has an old school vibe so it's better to go when you aren't in a rush anyway. read more

When you've read the other reviews that say hole in da wall, the statement couldn't be any more true. Yes the decor is outdated and the menus need to be redone because they're falling apart but the food makes up for it because if it didn't, this place would be in trouble. I noticed this place when we came next door to do laundry. Since I have a toddler he is always on the move. He loves to run everywhere and one day the first time we came to the laundromat he knocked on the window. I was following behind but the server didn't see me and thought he was unattended and came out and asked if he was any baby and I said yes she said ok good I thought he was alone and went back inside. Ok lady. I am not that mom! My son is just a super busy, growing and healthy toddler. I peeked in the window saw it was busy, and after seeing how popular the place was we knew we should stop in. If you look past the busted cracked booths just get to ordering some food and it's all good. The grill is open so if you have a phobia of dirty dining or people messing with your food it's all G here because you can see them preparing the food in front of you if you sit at the bar. Menu items consist of Korean foods and local foods. Their burgers look awesome and I can tell you they are freshly made. We ordered banana hot cakes for our son instead of the rice with the Vienna sausage and eggs combo plate. I ordered hamburger steak and mandoo combo. Hot cakes were that. Hot and fluffy with fresh banana inside. Super good! Only con is that they come with margarine. Wish it was butter instead. Eggs cooked perfectly over easy. My hamburger was made fresh to order, no frozen patties here. Smothered in brown gravy grilled onions on top and my mandoo on the side. Mandoo was homemade and was piping hot from the fryer with dipping sauce on the side. Fresh kimchee brought out to accompany my meal and it was good! I heard it's homemade but I'm not sure because I didn't ask and I'm not a kimchee expert but it was good. Service was great everyone very nice. I have seen this place for a very long time in Waipahu. But, I never tried this place till now. I fill up gas at the Aloha gas station every now and then and I see this place as I drive thru the parking lot as I am leaving. I decided to give this place a try as it's been here like forever. So, they must offer something good at this place. I walked in at 1:00pm to order my breakfast/lunch for today and not realizing that they close at 2:00pm. Only 2 people were in there eating at the time. I ordered my food and the other lady there started cooking my order right away. In no time my order was ready, I paid and then left. I took it to work, opened it and saw a big omelette. I tried it and noticed that the Kim Chee was on the sour side. It was really fermented. Other than that it was good. Today, we got to try this cozy cafe for the first time. We have to admit that we didn't know that this was here even if we go to nearby Savers often. PARKING was fast to find since there are many stalls. SEATING was by chance since there's a few counter seats and 6 booths. We were lucky to have an available booth. FOOD choices for breakfast and lunch were many as they could make anything on the menu. CUSTOMER LOYALTY was obvious since a constant flow of people kept filling the open seats. HOURS open from 6am-2pm. SERVICE from Tina and Hannah was awesome! They make you feel special checking on your satisfaction. We even got to sample their kimchee for free! So fresh and yummy. I had the Classic fried rice which came as a huge mound of fried rice wrapped with fried egg, a black coffee and a glass of water. I've lived in Waipahu for YEARS, but never ventured around to see what's out here.. & then close-by restaurants on yelp's suggestions lead me to read the reviews on this place, & thus lead me to trying this place out. My sister & I wanted to eat something sweet, yet we wanted to have rice (typical asian problems), so we decided to half our meals. I ordered the 2pc banana shortstack, & my sister ordered the "famous fried rice" omelette. I dug into the omelette first & it was so good! The fried rice really is good! I'm not a fan of luncheon meat (& I believe that's what was in there), but I still found this to be satisfying! I'd much rather prefer spam, but at the rate people eat spam, & how expensive it's now getting I can see the expenses being a problem. The banana pancakes we're superrrrr good! It was light & fluffy, and you get actual pieces of banana in the pancakes (not completely mashed), & it was just GOOD! If you have ever ate at Likelike Drive Inn in town; (You would know Likelike has good banana pancakes!) I think Waipahu Cafe trumps Likelike's! And I'd like to note that I'm not much of a sweet, pancake, breakfast type of girl. The ONLY downside of this place is that it's cash only! I had no idea when coming here. &there was no outside sign to say cash only. I noticed the sign on the counter after I ordered, so I had to withdraw from 7-11's ATM, & that extra $2.75 was not the business. Also, this is a VERY small & VERY confined cafe! There may have been 6 small table booths there, & a few counter seats, but that's it. We did wait about 40mins (from seating to ordering our food, to actually getting our food), but it was worth the wait. Thank God I had the day off! Lastly, as a former waitress and currently working in customer service it did bother me a slight bit that we stood there before seating ourself & was not acknowledged for nearly 15mins. I will, however, give them the benefit of the doubt that they we're just busy (I believe there we're only 3 workers). Other than that, I'd chose this place for breakfast over Denny's and iHop.
