We've been coming here with some regularity as of late. We enjoy dining in this historic former hotel. The uneven wooden floors, and the rough beams throughout the dining rooms is absolutely charming. Today we were seated on the outdoor porch to enjoy the spectacular weather! We ordered a small c&p pizza for our small boys,and a basket of calamari for them to share. Let's just say they're not quite ready for calamari, but the pizza they deemed to be quite delicious. My husband loves their broiled Cajun fish, fry so he ordered it again today. He got the baked sweet potato and mentioned how delicious it was. I went with the Greek Chicken Salad, a sheer delight with Greek dressing as well as tzatziki. The salad itself was built on a base of fresh mixed spring lettuces topped with pickled banana peppers, fresh grape tomatoes, sweet purple onions, sliced cucumbers. The grilled chicken cutlet was cut julienne and was strewn on top. Everything that I love in a salad. The plate was also garnished with a stack of baked flatbread triangles, which were nice and crisp! This place is an institution I'm told and glad I tried it out. It's basically a tavern with bar food and they have their famous Friday fish fry but I was a day too early for that so I tried the beef on Weck which is a very traditional local dish. It was good but I'm a Chicagoan so I have to say I prefer the Italian beef sandwiches over this. Beef on weck is more of a sliced beef served on a salted kimmelweck roll which has salt and caraway seeds and prepared horseradish on the side. Yes it was good and I'd probably get it again but if you grew up around here, it's a local fave. The place is like old rustic and had a nice vibe to it. Great service too! read more

Went on a Friday night with a friend and we were sat outside immediately. We started with drinks and the buffalo chips appetizer which I couldn't get enough of (you're lucky I took a picture before I dove in). I ended with the fish fry which had a great breading and generous amount of sides. I love German potato salad and was happy to see it offered. They had sold out of the 1/2 fish fry but I was happy to order a whole fish and take home leftovers! I would be back to try more on the menu read more

Takeout was 3 stars. Ordered takeout on a Friday night. They don't take call aheads for orders, which is understandable knowing how unpredictable business can be - will it be busy?, do we have enough staff?, is there going to be a wait, etc. I called around 5pm and was told it would be about 40 min. It ended up being an hour. My only wish is that the takeout service was run a bit smoother. Perhaps a separate phone line or designated takeout area? Food was 5 stars. We had a double order of fingers. They were kind enough to allow me to split sauces - half plain with mild on the side, half medium. Bonus points for keeping the celery separate from the fingers. They even put the different fingers in separate boxes. We will be back, but probably just stick with eating inside the restaurant. read more

I recently met up with some family for dinner on an early Friday night, and we were able to get in and sit without a reservation. The 5 of us split 3 meals, 2 fish fry's and a chicken sandwich, no issues with the request and everything was piping hot and tasty! The place has obviously been around awhile with lots of pictures and Buffalo themed beer stuff on the walls. Was with a party of three. Called ahead and was informed they do not take reservations. When we arrived they told us about 20-30 minute wait. After an hour of watching them seat multiple parties they seemed familiar with who had arrived after us, we were finally seated in a back room that resembled an event room than an actual dinning area. Their drink menu was also very small. Was not happy with the way that if you knew the workers you got sat before others on the wait list. (Similar party size). The lack of reservations also limits the ability to counteract this. Food was good but they brought out our appetizers at the same time as our main courses. read more

I had a very tasty Chipotle BBQ chicken sandwich. It came with really great, hot French fries, just the right amount of "crunch", not over or under cooked. With the French fries, I ate only 1/2 of my sandwich while in the restaurant, saving the other 1/2 for the next day. It is still good as a leftover. read more

This review is for drinks only. I was on a pub crawl in East Aurora. Fun fact: You can order your drink to go in East Aurora, and drink your alcoholic beverage while you walk. The menu offers plenty of options. After much consideration I decide on the Wally burger. I requested medium rare and that's just how it arrived. You can pick 3 toppings, I picked sautéed onions, jalapeño peppers and American cheese. On top a big slice of tomato and lettuce. The burger covered the whole bun. It is not easy to eat though, you have to "maneuver" your mouth around it, but it is worth the effort. Very juicy. The fries that came with it were super. Nice and crunchy. read more

Went for a birthday dinner. Drinks were good but the food was off. We got 3 fish fry's 2 burgers and a salad. First it really wasn't packed and we waited almost an hour for our food. Everything but the fish fry's came out 15 min before the fish. So that was just kinda odd. The 2 things we were most frustrated with is we had someone who was vegetarian. 1 they advertise a vegan menu. No where did we read only on Thursday. 2nd the girl who was vegetarian took 1 bite of the Mac salad and said no way, there's meat in here...... There is in fact tuna in the Mac salad...... When Wallenwein's started popping up on my Instagram feed a few months back, I was truly confused. Vegan options?? This unassuming bar and restaurant offers "Vegan Thursdays". During our visit, we inquired as to why the options are only limited to Thursdays; since they use separate cooking areas and fryers, they can only put aside one day a week to make these accommodations possible with the busy crowd. In a way, I appreciate this. You can tell they really care about cross-contamination with meat/dairy. It will be interesting to see if they expand the options to other days in the future. The menu is typical bar food; vegan pizza, a rotating vegan sandwich (they have offered Rueben's and a beef on weck so far), the impossible big mac burger, and the infamous cauliflower wings. The wings come in standard buffalo, or Carolina BBQ/ regular BBQ for a dollar more. They provide a side of vegan bleu cheeze and celery; typical Buffalo fare. We were also provided with a regular menu, in which I noticed a veggie wrap, Portobello grill sandwich, and the impossible burger itself on. I am sure they could be made vegan for other days of the week (sans a few ingredients), though I do not know if cooking areas would be separated-- worth noting though for the everyday menu. The wings were phenomenal. Mom caved in and shared BBQ with me (I don't like buffalo sauce much, sorry). I am not a big fan of fried food, but these wings were crispy without feeling heavy. Cauliflower is already my favorite vegetable, and it can do just about anything. The BBQ sauce had a little kick to it, but nothing overbearing. Mom also ordered a wally basket fry, which was huge for $4.95. We sat out on the patio and had a nice evening in East Aurora. Well, almost nice. You cannot smoke inside or on the patio, but some guys were puffing their cancer sticks right in front of the patio. I wish they would address this-- you should have to stay a further distance away. It didn't affect us too much, but we may stay inside next time. I am very impressed with Walleweins. It is more family friendly than other "pub"/bar-esque restaurants. Our server was attentive and very friendly. I cannot wait to see how Vegan Night grows in the future, and I am thankful for such a casual option in the village. read more

I took my dad's advice for lunch here. They were so welcoming and polite! Immediate service and so friendly. We got our food super fast which makes no sense because the food is absolutely delicious. In my experience you can either have your food fast or delicious but never both, they proved me wrong here.y son is the luckiest eater of all time and completely housed his hamburger. I've been seeing Nora's Thursday special vegan menu posts in the WNY Vegans Facebook group for weeks now, but never really thought seriously about driving from Amherst to East Aurora, especially in February -- until I heard they introduced a reuben. It was seriously worth the drive. No hype -- this is a great sandwich. So many others get the 1000 Island part wrong. And the cauliflower wings & blue cheese -- spot on! Some of the best vegan takeout I've had since Amy's Place closed. Kudo's to Wallenwein's for being innovative and appealing to a growing yet largely untapped market. Though limited to Thursday nights, perhaps when more of us go out of our way to make the journey for great food, they'll be able to make these items regularly available. read more

Came during lent on a Friday night. I expected to have to wait and waited close to two hours. The wait really wasn't a problem for me. The disappointing part was that I received this fish fry that was mostly over done. I didn't bother to complain or send it back to the kitchen because I knew they were rammed. Finally got here for a Friday fish fry a couple weeks ago. The only bad thing we were unaware they were featured on 2 local stations and were beyond packed! We waited 2 hours for a table - we never wait that long anywhere but since we made the drive we felt we should stay. Gotta say the beer battered fish I ordered was huge and delicious, I never can finish them and usually they get soggy on the bottom and especially by the next day but not this fish fry still as delicious the next day! My wife and I don't eat macaroni salad so they even let us change the side to extra coleslaw or extra fries which was wonderful! Their menu is huge, going to have to come back to try some other meals. read more

I have had a decent experience in the past, however not last Friday. My wife ordered ahead for two fish fry dinners to go. She was told 45 min. I show up 45 minutes later. Place is packed. I wait 15 min then check with staff. They advise at least another 30 minutes. I check with those in line they all were told 45 minutes and one couple just got their order 1 hour and 40 min later. We had plans so I went up and cancelled our order. Staff expressed zero sympathy or apology. Disappointing, I guess their business is so good they can afford to lose customers. This review is in regards to takeout during COVID. I decided to order takeout from here on a Friday and opted for their "famous" fish fry. It had been rated WNY's best fish fry in the past, and I hadn't tried it yet. I called in my order as they do not have online ordering and was told it would be about 35-40 minutes, which I thought was a little long considering it was one fish fry and I called at 340p. I also had to call several times as they only have one line. When I arrived, there was someone standing on the front deck that asked my name, got my order and took payment over the railing, which is a little raised up, so could be hard for a shorter person. I was surprised by the size of the fish, I thought it was a little small for the full sized fish, seemed more likely what a half portion would be. But it was hot and the fries were under the fish which kept them warm too. I ordered double macaroni salad as I don't really care for coleslaw. There was a side of tartar sauce and a tiny slice of lemon. I usually use several lemon wedges for my fish, so I was disappointed with that. The fish was okay, nothing special, similar to most fish frys you would get in WNY. The mac salad was bland, but the fries were tasty and crispy. I was happy to help out a local establishment during this time, but not thrilled with the food. I will have to try the food in house once it's allowed again. read more

This place is great. It's in an old hotel from the late 1800s. There are no stools at the bar. They have a good selection of draft beer. The staff is friendly. Their chicken wings are among the best in Buffalo. Their fish fry also won best fish fry award. They have a very nice outdoor patio and dining area. I wish they were open Sunday and Monday but still enough to give 5 stars. Lots of great places in East Aurora. This is my favorite. Less crowded than barbill. Their pizza is good too. read more

This review is more about the atmosphere than anything else. While no longer a hotel, this place feels a bit like a small town cheers. First impressions: A bit plain with a standup bar. I mean, you literal stand at the bar. Gives it a nice, old feel. There are a few kitschy items behind the bar, making it a bit of a tacky feel. But the regulars are a lot of fun to talk to. The beer: A few craft selections from the area and quite a few cheaper beers. Most people were drinking blue (Labatt's that is). The food: I had the beef with gravy open faced sandwich. I would have done a Beef on Weck, but I did not find it as impressive my first try at another place (maybe I am not a good New Yorker? - I have never lived there). The wings were rather nice, however. I did the suicide. I don't think suicide wings are really that hot, but they had a nice burn to them. In summary: Decent wings, really nice employees, and an interesting experience. read more

Went for the famous Friday fish fry and it delicious! I got the panko crusted, it was very good, hot, crunchy, crispy coating with a flaky fish inside . The wife got the Italian baked fish with bruschetta and mozzarella cheese, it was very good too. Nice healthier option for a change. ( we always share so we get more to tantalize our taste buds) they both came with all the standard side plus healthy choices too. The sides were fresh and home made and great. Our family members got the wings, some " hot" and some Italian garlic Parmesan, both were excellent, hot temp crispy and delicious. . The place is a good size old neighborhood tavern, nice place to go and not have to dress to impress ( the East Aurora crowd) and just enjoy the food and company. Great selection of bottled and on tap beers that go great with a fish fry and wings! It was the first Friday of lent so it was packed, waited about a 1/2 hr. I love how old and historical this bar is but that's about all I like about it. It's a very small bar and slightly outdated. I ordered a cocktail from the bar and I paid $7 for a watered down large whiskey and coke. $8 will you get you a double whiskey and coke in an actual glass at most of the other bars in town. Not to mention this place is definitely geared more towards the older crowd. We rented out a back room for a birthday party and that was actually really nice. We could be loud and no one could hear us and it was very private. We had 26 come. And we had some pasta dish, salad, and roast beef sandwiches. And it was absolutely awful. Not only did we pay nearly A GRAND for everything but the roast beef was horrible. Barely anyone ate it. And we ate with plastic silverware and plates like we were at some backyard bbq.
