I usually absolutely love this spot. The food is great... but they are open until 11 on the site, we tried calling and there was not an answer, and when we got there they said the kitchen was closed. It's valentines day and our plans were based around this so it was very uncool. I work in the industry and I would have probably made an exception considering the circumstance. Had a great brunch with my wife last Sunday. We tried the Chicken Congee, southern style biscuits and egg sandwich. The chicken congee was a little bland but with a little sauce they provide it was good. The biscuits were buttery and flaky the way i like them and came with butter, apple jam and some kind of honey syrup. My favorite was the egg sandwich which came with pork belly inside a bao bun and topped with a panko crusted soft boiled egg. So good. Lacking professionalism. We arrived to our dinner reservation that was scheduled for 830pm with the other half of our party waiting since around 8pm and were told that the online reservation system didn't send them the reservations that were made on it's platform to them, so it would be about a 45min wait. Ok, not a good selling point, but we were willing to wait. The establishment is quite small and there were a few other parties waiting to be seated as a result of the online reservation system malfunctioning. We waited, more waiting, and another party of 4 which is the same amount in our party were seated before us despite arriving after us. Inquired with the hostess who mentioned they had a reservation which we reminded her that so did we (just think they made a bigger fuss and got seat first). Regardless, it would have been nice to be offered a drink, or appetizers on the house to account for the error. After waiting for about 1.5 hours we left because who knew how long it would be before we ate and we were all starving and just watching others eat. Felt bad for the hostess, as it seemed more appropriate for the manager to take care of situations like this. The food looked good on the menu, but I guess I'll never know cause I can't say I'll go back. read more

Wallflower is a trendy and delicious restaurant off rose in Venice. The foods are all carefully curated and feature traditional Indonesian dishes. We had our waiter pick everything for us which was such a good decision! We started with the duck lumpia which was extremely savory. The outside shell was crispy and the inside was moist and flavorful. We also got the crab dip which again was very savory and the shrimp chips complimented it well! We then ordered the rendang mamak (and a side of rice). This was definitely my favorite dish of the evening! The lemongrass flavor really shined through. My main critique is the pricing as the portions are a bit small and I know I could spend the same amount and have something larger at another nice restaurant. Same goes for cocktails, very thoughtfully curated but some are a few dollars overpriced. I would recommend this for a networking dinner or a date spot! Super fun place to try some new things. read more

What's great: - food - of the 5 or 6 dishes we got, more than 50% were quite good (the biggest stand-out was the duck lumpia) - some of the cocktails (the huo and the jamu were great) - chill atmosphere What could use improvement: - service (think multiple requests for water refills, having to ask if you can order) - seating/table set-up (in the outside area the tables are very slanted [think water condensation rolls off the table onto your legs and feet, you can't rest your knife on the plate or it will slide off because of the sharp angle], the chairs are small and short [think anyone over 5'6" will have their knees in their chest and not be able to place their legs under the tables]) - food - some of the dishes and cocktails are not on par with the rest (ex. the fish of the day was a barramundi served sort-of en papillote with a banana leaf - there was a really odd, off-putting texture from (i think) shaved lemongrass and the bites were really inconsistent in their flavoring and texture.) read more

Ok. First time I was here, I was on the fence - but that was opening week so they get a pass. Every time thereafter, Wallflower has been a slam dunk. Most importantly, the Huo cocktail is a must if you like whiskey based drinks. It's their take on an old fashioned and is phenomenal, you have to sit at the bar and watch it being made - that's half the fun! On to the food. Top hits for me: Beef Rendang with coconut rice, Japanese veggie curry with either coconut or jasmine rice, and the Urap something salad. The Jidori chicken looks amazing too but I have yet to try it. Avoid the pork belly dish - it's just ok. read more

I've been a few times and dream about the crispy tofu (not something I'd ever order, but it's insanely good). The first time, we thought we were being ignored by the servers, but ever since they have been great and the food is lovely. So much flavor. I live a block away from the restaurant so naturally, I was excited when I saw it was opening. My whole complex of ten people decided to go and check it out together. The food quality is good. Everything tasted fine. The staff was very good looking. Those are the positives. The portions were small, however, and the prices were VERY expensive. I am sorry, but there is a line where you get insulted by the pricing, and this place touches it. This is especially true if you are Asian, or if you have a bit of knowledge on what Asian food [should] costs what. Charging nearly 20$ for INDONESIAN fried rice or 5$ for cup of white rice is asinine. This is a place people will try out once perhaps twice and not come back. It is not cozy enough to be the Friday or Saturday nite hang to grab a drink, either. It is meant to cater to the new money tech crowd and the Santa Monica adjacent yuppies. Unfortunately for this restaurant, these people are educated and know when they are getting ripped off on [what should be] cheap Asian foods dressed up as supposed upscale Asian fusion. It might trick that guy from Minneapolis who has lived in Venice for 1,5 years, but to anyone else, I'd check something else out. read more

A must for great authentic southeast Asian cuisine! Went with friends and family and we must have ordered everything on the menu! The ribs and the fish for 2 were absolutely delish, as were the wok vegetables and the rice noodles and every single dessert! The cocktails were also creative, refreshing and delish! To top it off, the atmosphere is warm, cozy, casual, yet romantic, and the service is very attentive. Loved our dining experience! A friend took me to this place and thankfully he has an expense account. This could possibly be the most over priced restaurant I have ever been to and I've been to a lot of pricey places. The menu is all over the place, clearly no real direction. You can tell the owners have probably spent a few weeks there on holiday and thought it would be cool to open a south east asian restaurant. The vibe is ultra cool, hipster.. looks like Gjelina on steroids. I love south east asian food, but unfortunately this is far from authentic and priced for suckers. Had high hopes but This place was awful... The food was really sub par , some things were decent but somehow overdone? The oxtail soup was good, soft and flavorful. I did like the duck rolls. In the Japanese curry, the veggies were almost uncooked and the whole thing tasted like fish sauce, the beef ribs were chewy. The fish in banana leaf was dry and in edible. i have high hopes for wallflower: im asian and live in the neighborhood. so far ive been three times: twice for coffee/breakfast, once for dinner. for breakfast i had the chicken porridge, black rice porridge, and rujak. for dinner i had the rib wings, oxtail soup, lobster bo luc loc, and a side of jasmine rice. the good: their espresso drinks (courtesy of demitasse) were very smooth. i ordered a mocha twice and both times it was excellent. the food was tasty and had authentic asian flavors. the bad: the waitress informed us the menu is "tapas style" but even still, some of these food portions are ridiculously small. chicken porridge at breakfast was about five spoonfuls of porridge, a sprinkle of shredded chicken, and half an egg. the lobster dish had about eight bite size pieces of meat. and the tiny side of jasmine rice was like something off a kid's menu. consensus: i'd definitely return for coffee. the food is either way overpriced or severely under portioned. either way i left still hungry. read more

Food is excellent I love the friend rice with the egg, the wok beef but both were extra spicy tonight. The tables outside are so close to each other it isn't the best for dates because the people next to you can hear you. Venice Beach boardwalk around Rose Avenue on a weeknight does'nt exactly offer you much in the way of f**k it I want to eat here dining options, so cruising past Wallflower on Rose Ave with its inviting exterior and edgy music led to an impulsive stop. And guess what - it turns out to be an Indonesian cocktail bar, with really good Indonesian food and some interestingly named cocktails - like Smoking Lemongrass, and Monkey King. I was by myself, and settled for a Pinot Noir, a Chilean Atanea 2015 from the Casablanca Valley, and Char Siu Chinese BBQ pork belly along with rice and vegetables. I actually could'nt read the menu without my glasses in the low light, and the waiter asked me if I was hungry, I said yes, and he made the choices for me! And very good choices too, the char siu pork belly came with a crispy glazed crust, with a silky layer of molten fat beneath, served over baby bok choy and shallots. Wok tossed veggies were a tad soupy, but excellent with a dollop of rice thrown in. All in all a hearty meal, with friendly service, good music and nice atmosphere, many notches above the boardwalk. And the damage ? - $70, but then I ordered 2 entrees, so it was effectively for a meal for two. read more

A much needed and welcomed cuisine in the area but annoyed. The food is good and flavored well but be prepared to leave hungry with an empty wallet. Plates are small; everything is quite pricey for what you get. Plates don't feel "balanced" either- you get a lot of meat and 1 stem of bok choy like the pork belly dish, or you get a ton of veges and 4 bites of lobster for a $40 plate. $170: 3 drinks, no dessert, and an unfulfilling meal for 2 skinny people leaving hungry. Small joint, however, the loft style atmosphere opens it up to compensate. I am not a huge fusion lover (pescatarian), but found plenty of variety for my liking on the menu. The fermented black beans and the banana leaf wrapped Halibut were both mine and table favorites. Service was also great. Always love when the owner stops by to check. Shows both that it is local and that there is a commitment there. Had drinks in the bar first which proved to be a nice atmosphere. Hmmn.. far too loud, far too dark (lighting is way too dim) and the food was tasty, but a bit pricey for what you get. The wine list is restricted, from what I suspect- may be a single wine distributor or some other sort of deal they have...very limited options, and not very good wines to be honest. Let me start off by saying I've lived in Venice for more than 20 years and appreciate restaurants that add value to the cultural landscape of my community. Wallflower is a winner. The food is excellent, the atmosphere is friendly and festive and the customer service is outstanding. Overall, I love the savory mixture of spices and sauces combined with meats, fish and vegetables prepared by Wallflower's gourmet chef. The duck lumpia is top notch. The shell was crispy but not overly fried, and the duck was moist and tender. The dish came with a wonderful sauce that featured soy, a bit of pepper of other spices. The char siu pork belly is to die for. Tender and tasty with a great sauce. The Pepes Ikan may be my favorite. It's fresh fish baked with a tomato chile paste inside a banana leaf. This place does not dissapoint. read more

The Good: Space looks cool. The So-So: For the prices the food is sub-par. It's okay, but priced at the level of better restaurants. If you want upscale Asian dinner go to Cassia. If you want better tasting Asian takeout get Satdha. We had a variety of dishes to get a sense of the place. None of them stood out. Several we didn't finish because once we'd eaten a bit and weren't super hungry, they weren't appetizing enough for us to care to eat more. The Bad: Wife has a soy intolerance (doesn't feel good when she eats it). We asked which items had soy in it. The waitress was helpful, and went back to find out. But the kitchen staff completely failed her, as they gave us a dish that may not have had soy sauce, but was full of edamame soy beans. Also, there were, by our count, two hostesses, two bartenders, six servers, another staff member we couldn't tell what their job was, and three busboys in the restaurant with only us as customers. Weirdly, most of this over-staffed crew were lolling around aimlessly, or cracking loud jokes to one another (like the waitress hanging out behind the bar, physically acting out the things that had happened to her on her night out the night before). The vibe was like there was no manager in the house and the staff were just hanging out in a livingroom together. The place seemed poorly run and leaderless. Overall, I think some investors wanted to rake in some coin with a cool-looking new place in a hot new culinary area of the city. Thing is, they didn't bring the quality of food or service to match the prices. A shame, because the menu descriptions sounded amazing. read more
