Just had our first experience here, having walked by one evening en route to another restaurant to meet friends. It looked so gorgeous from the outside. Beautifully decorated, candles, cozy. We heard they were open for breakfast so stopped in to test the waters over the weekend. It's almost as pretty in the daylight. You can sit inside or out and there's an interesting Indonesian "breakfast" We tried the rice porridge and it was yummy. We're serious coffee drinkers and didn't love the coffee. The roast is light and we're dark roast fans, so that didn't work for us. We looked at the dinner menu, seemed a little pricey for small plates, but hey, it's a new Venice these days. Wallflower is different. full stop. It's cool. And it's sophisticated. The design is killer - you can't place it really, it's old and new and east and west. It's LA but it's not (perhaps it's a New LA). Start with the duck lumpia and then move on to the Char Siu Pork Belly and the rib wings, oxtail soup, lobster bo luc loc, and a side of jasmine rice. My wife and I had been to Wallflower several times and really enjoyed it. We made a reservation on a Tuesday night for ourselves and a friend. We were seated and when no one had taken a drink order 20 minutes later we prevailed on the hostess to bring us a drink. A waiter came by about 15 minutes later and asked what we were having. The fact that we hadn't even ordered and the service was terrible was not a good sign. After we asked him to give us a few minutes I think he got annoyed and simply ignored us from then on. Finally, the hostess came back and took our order. We ordered a "small bite" of chicken sate. We ordered 3 other dishes as entrees, including a pork belly dish which was delicious, a vegetable dish that was good, and grilled octopus that was disgusting. The food came promptly and all at once. No courses, just slap the plates on the table. By this time the poor service became ludicrous. We finished the meal and again sat for 15 minutes with the table littered with dishes. When my wife started stacking the plates and cleaning off the table herself, I finally asked to speak to the manager. Miles, the owner/manager was very professional and knew we had been treated badly. He comped desert, a kind of sticky toffee pudding, our one drink, and a couple of the other dishes. That was very gracious of him but the truth is I would have rather have paid for the food and been treated well. Despite his gesture of good will we wont be back. I almost never write a review but had to for Wallflower. Went with a large party for a girlfriend's birthday last night and had such a wonderful time. The restaurant is small and quaint so they gave us a large table on the patio. The food was outstanding, every dish was full of flavor and came in a timely fashion. The staff was so attentive and kept checking in on us. My glass was never without wine for more than a couple of minutes:). I enjoyed it so much that I told some other friends we have to go back. We are going again and just called to make a reservation. Miles, the owner, answered and was so sweet and happy to accommodated our (once again) very large party. I am looking forward to introducing my family and friends to the yummy dishes at Wallflower and wish this restaurant tremendous and long term success. read more

This is a new modern Asian fusion cuisine eatery in Venice with drinks prepared by experienced mixologists. The prices may be considered a bit high, but honestly they're definitely not out of line with most other restaurants of this caliber in the area. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodated our group as we grew - always with a smile. They have a nice patio area outside for a more casual feel, and inside is well designed and has an upscale feel without being unapproachable. We had the pork belly, (incredible), and a few cocktails which were expertly prepared. I look forward to seeing this place grow and add new dishes. I'll make another stop the next time I'm in the area. read more

The staff were very friendly; as I entered I was greeted by the managers with warmth and kindness. The chef and I exchanged banter since we are both Indonesian. Food very good. Thought the chicken jidori and the crab were the best dishes we had. Though paying $3 for a tiny scoop of rice is a little overpriced. Drinks are alright. However, by far, the worst was the service. Was told twice by the waiter to hold on a moment since we were waiting forever to even order. Then, after only 2 dishes arrived he asked us what else we were waiting for -- practically everything! we were only 2 dishes in! Not only that, but he was very condescending about my friend's severe food allergies. Strangely, they also poured water to only 1/4 cup full? I'm not sure what kind of etiquette that is, but water glass is not meant to be 1/4 full. I'll apologize if I'm not aware of that type of custom, but I find it strange why you'd pour water for everyone at varying levels and some barely even meeting the 1/2 marker. Last, the kicker to it all, they charged an obligatory 20% service fee for a party of four. Probably because they heard us complaining and knew we weren't going to tip well. This place serves delicious food and cocktails in a beautiful space. The flavors don't have the over sugary taste that so much SE Asian food can have in the US. Items on the menu and ambience was what drove me to this place, BUT it was a let down. We had the duck lumpia, chicken satay and rice noodles. All three orders were flavorless, and the noodles were way too spicy (and I can handle my heat!). The duck came with this soy sauce, but I think it would have been better with a sweet sauce or hoisin sauce instead. The peanut sauce for the chicken satay was the only flavorful thin. I love the setting of this restaurant and it reminds me of a neighborhood joint in the west village of NYC. BUT... the food is average to bad. We sent back a dish of fatty gross chicken pieces and really wanted to send another dish back but felt so guilty. It was such a disappointment. The veggie dishes are expensive and over sauced up. I left hungry but after we split four crap dishes between us, we didn't want anything else. Even the cocktails are so small it's a joke (and I'm not a big drinker so it's not about getting wasted!). This place is deeeelish! And the atmosphere very artful and cool. We ate in the patio at sunset and the heaters + fireplace kept us warm. The salads were fresh and nuanced with divine flavors and just the right amount of spice. And my eggplant curry was soooooo good. Stumbled across this place on Yelp and so glad we came. The decor is hip/cozy and all the food we ordered was exceptional. The most simple thing on the menu was the Nasi Ayam but it was to die for. We liked it so much we had to order a second order... the rice was fresh and fragrant and you could just feel the love in this dish. The two other exceptional dishes were the Rendang Mamak and Nasi Goreng. Can't wait to come back! read more

Great ambiance, great service but mediocre and overpriced food

My husband and I went to Wallflower with no reservation, hoping to get a seat at the bar on what was a busy night. The menu is interesting and the food was hit or miss but our experience was made so much better by some of the people who work there, that they deserve a yelp! The hostess, Jen, whose name we made sure to get, was so on top of it. The bar was super busy, but she told us to hang out for a little and made some room in the corner so we could grab a drink. She was super busy with people at the door and answering the phone but she was still keeping her eye on the bar. She checked in on us, and on the other couple who were also waiting, and got us as soon as two seats opened up. She could have easily told us to get a drink and wait and see, we were just as important as people sitting down with reservations. So many restaurants tell you they'll keep their eye out and they never do, which makes for a "every man for himself" situation at the bar, which is always awkward. The bartenders were super friendly, and make some great drinks. When it had gotten less crowded, we talked to them for quite awhile. A great example of how the staff can make all the difference. We will be back to grab a fresh cocktail, and say hi to our new friends. read more

This is one of the worst service experiences I have ever had. Not only did the server ( tall and bald) tell us that he worked there twice a week when I asked about food suggestions, he also was extremely rude and irritable when we asked for his help with wine suggestions. We ordered a bottle of wine that he brought to the table already opened. After the experience I just had, I really doubt that it was even a new bottle. Horrible etiquette. Not to mention the busser never came back after we asked for salt and pepper. The server came back and passively asked if we needed anything else since our request for more seasoning was, "a lot to put together." He then continued to be passive aggressive and rude to us throughout the entire evening. The food was so bland. The highlight of our night was their beautiful plates and the lovely female host who was the only qualified employee in the restaurant. Not to mention everything was way overpriced. Food: 5 stars Service: minus 3 stars My boyfriend and I came to this restaurants with high hopes. The food itself was delicious. We ordered the beef rendang, duck lumpia, nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice), and the lemongrass coconut panna cotta. Beef Rendang: On a spiciness scale of 1-10, was about a 7.5. It was just spicy enough where you could still taste the flavor of the dish itself. The portion is large enough to share between 2 people. BUT, it did not come with rice, and the waiter failed to recommend ordering the side white rice dish which was surprising, given how heavy, oily, and spicy the dish was. The duck lumpia was good, but not $6 per lumpia good. This appetizer was $18 for 3 average sized pieces of lumpia. :/ Way overpriced, even for Venice. The nasi goreng was pretty good. It came with a slow poached, flash fried egg which was unique. The portion size is rather small, and is good only for 1 person. The lemongrass coconut panna cotta was the most unique thing we ordered tonight and would recommend it for anyone who wants to try. Despite the good food, the poor service will keep me from coming back and from recommending this place to friends. -when we sat down, the host basically threw the paper menu at my boyfriend. we looked at each other and shrugged it off, thinking maybe he didn't mean to do that. little did we know, it'd be indicative of the service we'd receive for the rest of our visit. -we were given 2 small glasses of water, which were never refilled throughout the night. all the other tables around us had their own bottle of water to refill, but we were not given any. -when the beef rendang came out, we asked for white rice as we were surprised it didn't come with it. we then waited at least 10-15 minutes and the rice was still not out. after asking multiple people, we were finally given a bowl. -at the end of our meal, we asked for the check as well as the dessert (which we ordered at the beginning with the rest of our food). the check came out, and still no dessert. they had left off a dish we ordered, and we corrected the receipt. in the time between the first and second check (which was no short time period), there was still no dessert. again, we had to ask multiple people about it. finally, the dessert came after we received the corrected receipt. -overall, service was incredibly slow despite the restaurant only being about 60% capacity (if that). I can't imagine the quality of service when the restaurant is actually full. -I wish I could've directed the tip solely to the back of the house. tl;dr: good food, AWFUL service read more

Overall the restaurant doesn't fit the neighborhood. Loud annoying music for such a small space and the food wasn't great. We were told that they could tone down the heat of one salad and when it came out it was very spicy and not very appealing. We ordered another salad and the flavors were all wrong. The atmosphere itself was ok but it doesn't feel like a restaurant that will last. Belongs in West Hollywood and not on Rose in Venice. The prices of the wine are also going to be a problem for the area with places like Venice beach wines and cerveteca down the street. The waitress did comp the food that wasn't great but I can't give something a good rating just for decent service. Disappointing in total I hope the restaurant plans to revise it's menu and also to figure out how to cater to the neighborhood clientele better. Look to little sister another neighborhood Asian fusion restaurant for inspiration. With a menu so small you would expect every dish to be a hit. read more

This place is awesome! Excellent curry. Excellent spicy noodles. Wish I had ordered the ribs because another table got them and they looked pretty fantastic. The smoked bourbon cocktail with real smoke is pretty cool. The people here were super friendly, both the ones who work here and the other customers. A great vibe, and a really fun time. We walked in without a reservation but it was pretty early. I'm not sure how easy that is to do later in the night. The interior is impressive - it's interesting without looking like a factory, which most restaurants do these days. We'll be going back. read more
