I found Wally Hatchet's because they are one of the first suggestions when I'm searching near home. They've been open for 5 months and have seemed to nail the concept of being a great local restaurant. I was impressed by their suggestion to have my husband and I sit in their military veteran's section. They have a whole military salute wall as well. The food was just as great. I loved my Ay Caramba and my husband found the selections available for the Fat Bottom Breakfast great as well. I tried the biscuit and loved it. Overall great food and great service. For my third visit, I had the pot roast, or as they call it, Mississippi Pot Roast. Now I've had lots of pot roast in my life and I've had lots of Mississippi food. I don't even know what this was. It was just all wrong. Now I will say that it had excellent flavor, it was good, and I ate every morsel, but I'm not even sure what it was. Because it wasn't pot roast. It was a fail. You see, pot roast gets cooked in a slow cooker with a broth. The meat is tender and juicy, and has long stringy strands. This meat here was more akin to steak bites and they were dry as if they had been towel dried or baked in an oven. What would have been great would be some of the broth or gravy that it had been cooked in. Instead, I got a plate full of turnip juice. Lol. Don't get me wrong. That didn't stop me from eating it. I'd eat a bowl full of turnip juice any day. But tell me what you'd rather have on this dish. Juice from the roast or turnip juice? And I believe this is the first time in my life I've been served pot roast without carrots. What in the world? I hope the owners can use my feedback. While I am criticizing it, I did enjoy eating it, and at the time I was eating, I felt like I would stay at four stars. It did have flavor. But then, literally the next day, I got pot roast at a gas station and it blew this one away, and I got double the portion. Check out my pics of it. It will be the review I write after this one. Saturday 1300 Ordered Early Bird Special - Two eggs, sausage - 2 small patties, fried potatoes, and one biscuit. Listed on the website as $7.99; I was charged $10.99. The increase is a fact of life. I didn't see any signs indicating menu price increases. As I am unable to eat egg yokes, I asked for egg whites only. Looking over the menu, I didn't note egg white substitutes listed. Nor did the waitress, Ayla, did not tell me there was a charge for this. So my bill, with coffee, was $17.47. I paid the bill without complaining and left. I'll stop by and talk with the manager later. Coffee. The plain creamer has a stronger taste than the coffee. The two best things I can say about the coffee is that it was black and served hot. Lastly: The restaurant has cut their weekend menu to breakfast items only. If you are looking for a hamburger or another lunchtime item, it aint gonna happen. From a customer's pov, this is very limiting. The best thing I can say is to come by during the week, as this place has a good lunch and dinner menu. read more

It is located at the off beaten path of Summer Ave Hwy 70). The owners are very nice people from what I have heard from so many. When we walked in the first thing I noticed is how friendly the people were. It is far from fine dining and the look inside or the area might not be for everyone but I loved it! Very down to earth. The first time we went, we were meeting someone who canceled last minute. We had already ordered drinks. We offered to pay for them. The waiter put them in to go cups and did not charge us. Next time was breakfast and it was one of the best breakfast places in Memphis with good service. Third time, we had lunch. The waiter offered suggestions but he said I would love the pot roast. It was on mashed potatoes which gave me a third side and it was delicious. We've been back several times now for breakfast and they just get better. Go somewhere enough times, they're bound to drop the ball once in awhile. Fortunately Wally Hatchet's has been consistently good. I see others post pics and reviews on here where they've come back over and over, but they seem to just complain. Not sure why. All I can say is, their repeat patronage is a plus for this place. That being said, if you don't like this place...why do you keep coming back? It's not bad, but not nearly as good as the hype. Maybe it would be a better experience if taken to-go but for dine-in the service is sub-par. For one, if there is a wait and they tell you to "wait outside" I highly recommend either waiting inside or coming to check every few min because their staff communication is very poor, and you will probably get skipped on the wait list. One host will ask for your phone number and insist you wait outside for a call or text--meanwhile the other host will just call names of the people who choose to crowd inside. It's not first-come-first served. It's whoever they choose to be next will be next. I got on the list, first in line actually, and they scratched off my name without sending me a notification via text or call like they said they would. My hungry aunt and I waited in the parking lot for an hour before deciding to check back in and seeing over 10 names scratched off the wait sheet since I'd checked in! I no longer trust restaurants to stick to their word and say they'll text me. Then they tried to tell me "I'm so sorry, the next two-top that opens up, we'll get you in!" I had to insist that the next ANY-number-top that opens up should be ours, because this was just disrespectful. If told to stand and wait inside, I would have, but I was told to wait by my phone for a call or text. The owner/managers did not even apologize. I guess from now on, I have to be that annoying customer who is checking in every 5min. The food was not bad, just not worth the extended wait, and the service was nothing special. Outstanding food & service! I've been more times than I can count. I've only ordered the chicken & waffles because it's so incredible, I can't not order It. However I've taken multiple people to eat there & we usually share. I've not had anything that was not exceptional, even the chicken fried steak which I thought I didn't like, wrong! It was delicious. The shrimp & grits were the best I've ever eaten..ummmm just thinking about It, I know where I'm going in the morning. I've eaten here a few times during weekday mornings but haven't found just that one dish that I love. Everything is good but I can't recommend that one thing you HAVE to try. It's a relaxed vibe inside being a neighborhood restaurant- it makes me think of a place where everyone knows your name when you walk in. This was a very fun and cool stop to hit up Breakfast. The "Pour Some Gravy on Me", AKA biscuits & gravy with two eggs was really good! Being able to sing the verse to one of my favorite 80's song earned me a bonus of some really good pancakes. Only complaint was the coffee was not that impressive, but not a make or break. read more

Came in today and was put on the waitlist. No biggie. Sat for 5 -7 minutes. Went outside to my car and heard another patron placing a reservation on the phone. Came back in and continued to wait. 10 minutes go by and the patron who placed their reservation AFTER me was called by the manager (Tommi), leaving my party and I confused. We inquired why they were seated before us. We were told "They had a reservation". We advised them that we literally heard the other patron placing the reservation after we had been placed on the waitlist . The waitress stared and said nothing. No apology, nothing. We leave. I think one important item to note is that we are Black and the other patons were White. I really hate to think this was the issue, but if you read other 1 star reviews, this same issue has happened before. Shameful. Will not be returning, but I doubt we'll be missed. read more

My cousin and I went here for brunch on a Saturday. The wait was about 15 mins. We were seated and our drink orders were taken immediately and we were informed of the daily specials. I ordered the kitchen sink omelette, it was delicious and cooked just right. My cousin ordered the caveman omelette and a Belgian waffle, she said it was great. Sunday brunch was muy delicioso! We ordered at caramba omelette and waffles, Mississippi pot roast, Lil early birdie x2 and multiple mimosas. Everything was above par, the ay caramba was delicious it had just the right amount of bite, eggs were done just right. The waffle was nice and dense with just the right amount of crispiness. The Actual matched the Aroma We had to do it, you know. Not long ago my wife and I went to Wally Hatchett's to try their breakfast. It was great. The staff are pleasant and friendly, and always bring a nice smile with the food. Well, recently we went back for lunch. On our first visit, Billie gave us a sample of the Pot Roast (and told us about the Grilled Meatloaf). When I smelled the aroma of the meat, I decided I would order the Pot Roast on my next visit. I did that and was glad I did. The well-seasoned and tasty Pot Roast is served on a bed of mashed potatoes. Again, the aroma caught my attention. It was served all hot and delicious. I can definitely recommend the Pot Roast and will get it again - but there are still more tasty treats on the menu to try on our next visit. Did I mention that I want to try their Grilled Meatloaf? I've heard that "Lipstick on a Cow" burger (with Pimento Cheese) is also good. My wife saw she could "Sing when you order" the Pour Some Gravy on Me!, and you get a treat. She sang and was quite happy with her treat of their short stack of pancakes - now, another good item to get for breakfast. As you might have guessed, we have found a great place for breakfast - and lunch - and will be going back. Group of friends came for breakfast. We waited about 15 minutes for a table for 7. Waited an additional 15 minutes to place drink orders. 5 minutes later we placed food orders. Took another 40 minutes to get our food. I did notice that tables who arrived after us got their food before us. I had the country omelet. It was just mediocre. I doubt they used any type of seasoning on the food and everything inside the eggs was burnt. Bacon was hard to chew and everything else was mushy. Only three out of seven of us even finished their food. After getting my bill, I noticed that I was charged more for my meal than what was listed on the menu. I think hey even added tip automatically because the receipt had a spot for "add additional tip". I will most likely never return. read more
