Monday 5/2 around 4:50pm This is my go-to Ace Hardware, however, today I had such a bad experience. My boyfriend and I were on the hunt for a rice cooker. We went to Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and came out empty handed at each place. I looked online and ACE HAD ONE IN STOCK. I called and spoke to a guy who was very polite and set the rice cooker aside and said "when you get here please come to the back where the key making section is and we will have it on the shelf for you." Ok cool, be there in 10. When we arrive there is a girl on the computer, maybe mid 20's with short brown hair, we weren't greeted at all so we patiently waited for her to be finished with whatever she was doing on the computer before we interrupted. Obviously, what she was doing was a pressing issue. Suddenly she acknowledges us "what do you need?" "Hi we called for that rice cooker, we are just here to pick it up." "well then speak up" ..... I could feel my face turn white like, did I really just hear her say that?? My reaction was nothing because I was purely in shock. I take out my wallet and she said "you don't pay here, you pay in the front like everyone else." I've literally paid here before every other time I've gotten keys made at this location... I grabbed our random little rice cooker and just said "OKKKK" and walked away. I guess I'm just irritated with the rudeness and lack of customer service. I was so tempted to go back and say something to her in person after I had some time to process what had just happened but my sweet bf told me it's not worth it so, YELP here I come! I was looking for a specific part for a high pressure washer that was missing that I bought second hand. I went to Home Depot, tried and had to return the wrong part that didn't work because no one helped me. So i actually brought my heavy washer into the WC Ace, and Stephen helped me for about 20 minutes, calling colleagues from different departments and trying on many parts to verify it will fit. We ran into many wrong parts before discovering the right one. He was so persistent and took it on with so much patience! I wish all shopping experiences feel like this! I recently shopped at the Ace Hardware Store downtown location. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent customer service each employee demonstrated during my 3-4 visits over a two-day span. I was particularly impressed with employees Sonya, Stefan and Bob. Each employee was knowledgeable about the parts required for my project and proved to be very patients with my sometimes dumb questions. I asked this employee with slick brown combed-back hair and glasses what type of battery was in my hand. He said it clearly is listed on top and if I needed glasses to see that. Was in the store Saturday afternoon looking for wood floor enzyme cleaners plus components to repair dog chewed lamp cord. Bob Doten came up to me right away when I was in the floor dept and introduced me to the store expert on floor care. He then said not to bother with the lamp components, to just bring it in and he would fix it. I went home, returned with the lamp and he perfectly repaired it for no charge. During the repair 3 other customers asked him for quick help. After asking me for an ok first, he quickly solved their problems and got back to my lamp. He then escorted me to the cash registers to pay for a few items. There was a line for the 2 manned registers so he took me to a third register, opened it, finished my purchase and sent me on my way. I cannot imagine more outstanding service than I received on a busy Saturday afternoon from Bob. Why would a customer want to shop anywhere else? It really pains me to leave this review because I've been a loyal customer at this location for several years, and I was hoping to remain one. But after my experience this afternoon, I will regretfully have to take my business elsewhere. Without getting too much into the boring details, I was treated rudely in the parking lot by a staff member as I was attempting to navigate reasonably and carefully around a chaotic traffic/pedestrian situation. Yes, I was chastised for checking my mirrors and pulling out of my spot carefully in the midst of people and cars and somewhat low visibility. We visited this location twice in a day-- and we probably won't come in again. There were a few other parties walking into the tree area-- the folks in front of us were greeted with a smile, we were given blank stares or ignored completely. The folks behind us were greeted. I took note. We went elsewhere to purchase our Christmas tree but came back later to find a stand. When we walked back into the tree area on our second v, we came in alone with another couple following us. Rude stares for us, a greeting for them. We chose our stand and walked into the "outdoor living area". Nothing for us, a "can I help you find anything" for the other couple. We walked into the main entrance to the store, and the young man said hello (finally), but as I was checking out, he didn't even hand me the receipt, which I thought was strange. He kind of just tossed it onto my purchases. Not a big deal, but after the rude looks from the other staff members, I was irked enough to write this review. I exchanged 2 bags of 21-0-0 fertilizer for 16-16-16 fertilizer. On the original purchase, 12 days earlier, I used one of my $5 off coupon cards. On the exchange they charged me full price even though they deducted the $5 from my credit refunded on the original purchase. I feel they should have reapplied the $5 coupon on my exchange since they deducted it off my return credit. You should not lose the $5 benefit on an exchange, especially when it is within the valid $5 off dates for that specific coupon card. Follow up to my review: Returned to store around 8AM this morning, Thurs 1/31. Cashier (did not get her name but she was the only one cashiering) did not know how to refund or credit me the $5 that was not applied to my exchange. I asked if Kevin Fisher (owner/gm?) was in and she replied "he comes and goes as he pleases". She called for a manager. Russell refunded me $5 plus tax. Bottom line: Ace does not have the capability of reapplying their $5 off card on exchanges, even within the timeframe printed on the card. For the first time in our vacationing history we didn't have someone house sit for us. We usually do so don't get any robbery ideas. I needed those timer lights for our home. Technology has really advanced in the world of timer lights. During Christmas they have an electric train going around the whole store. Going around the whole store on a track, that is suspended from the ceiling. I guarantee that if you brought a kid in here to check it out they would go crazy for it. The Christmas decorations are so crazy. They really go all out. I found my timer lights. They have so many different types. I chose the ones with two time options in one. I bought to many and had to return one when I got back. They worked perfectly and actually have now started timing it for when my son and I wake up and to go off by the time we leave. The helpful place! Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Surprisingly, I've been to this Ace Hardware a healthy number of times. Maybe not Billy Blanks healthy but definitely Richard Simmons at the very least. I initially made contact with this planet of goodies when the water at our office got shut off and Ace was kind enough to let me and my coworkers tromp through every 5 minutes and use their adorable bathroom at the back of the store. (P.S. Extra points for a clean and hygienic bathroom with a good paint job and wall art. People, art saves lives and it also saves bathrooms.) As I was walking through on that first visit, I realized my vision of Ace as some spot solely designated to hammers, screwdrivers and big ol' riveting machines that incite neighborly disputes was totally skewered. Ace has so much more! Paint, candles, Poo Pourri (in the impulse buys section near the register next to the lip balm... Holla!), motor oil, wall art such as the lovely piece presented in the restroom, grills, patio furniture, plants, air conditioners, shelving... I could go on and on. And like any spending aficionado, once I saw some stuff to comb through, I had to come back. The staff is all very friendly here and eager to assist. As the "helpful place" tagline implies, they strive to be helpful and demonstrate all that knowledge they packed in their cranium during training to give you the best advice possible and point you in the direction you need to go. Their return policy is pretty good from what I've experienced; I bought two bottles of motor oil before realizing I had bought the wrong kind and promptly brought the unopened one back to the counter for a refund, which I was given with no fluff. My main (and only) reason for coming here is their garden center. There are times I just don't feel like making the trip to Navlet's in Pleasant Hill or San Ramon, which are my two favorite places for plants. Ace Hardware has a decent section out in the back of the store with a variety of outdoor shrubs, flowers and other plants suitable for pots or ground planting. I've found the service to be aloof and I don't feel they can offer the knowledge or suggestions that the staff at Navlet's does-that's if you can even located anyone in the garden section at Ace. I've purchased some lavender plants here-one did okay and one didn't do so well, even though I followed the exact same regimen for them. As far as other garden needs such as tools, soil and bark chips, I've found their prices to be slightly higher than say, Home Depot or Navlet's. I find Ace to be convenient and sufficient for some garden needs. They also have a Yelp Check in offer for $5 off $30 spent (at least they did a month ago.) Getting in and out of the parking lot can be a bit of a challenge depending on the time of day and if you have to make a left hand turn on or off Mt. Diablo Blvd. Ace Hardware is okay-just not up to par with the type of garden center I feel Walnut Creek needs. The Yelp 100 Challenge! read more

When I need something quick and don't want to drive over to the overwhelming Home Depot, Ace Hardware is my go to spot. It's close to my house and the employees here are generally cheerful and ready to help. I've always had a pleasant experience here and don't forget to use their Yelp $10 for $20 deal or $5 off a $30 purchase with checking into the yelp app. The $10 for $20 deal can only be used once but if you have more than one person in your household, then each person can buy it once. Prices are reasonable and parking is easy. Afterwards you can easily drive a few blocks away to downtown WCR for some shopping or dining. Score! read more

After moving my files and school supplies from my home back to school, my moving cart wheel displaced and I needed some hardware to reconnect the wheel. I went right to Mt Diablo Blvd Ace to buy the parts and inquire if someone could help me put the wheel back on the cart. I met up with Bobby, the Ace trainee associate who showed me the parts I needed and proceeded to put the wheel on the cart. No easy task. He had to align four holes on the wheel to the four on the cart and bolt everything. The store manager let him borrow some tools and in a short time with the right tools, he connected the wheel to the cart and I was on my way. Giving these guys a good review is not necessarily a swipe at Lowes or Home Depot. Those places are like Costco for tools and home repairs, and that's fine if you are getting ready to go on HGTV or something like that. But for the small fixer uppers that mine and most other houses need, staying close to home is usually the best way to go. Staff is always pretty helpful, they don't follow you around the store like a hawk. Nice garden selection, and they will cut plywood for you if that is what your project requires. And there is nothing wrong with buying "store brand" here, as the Ace name is as dependable as you can get as I have purchased gloves, hand tools, shop towels, trimmer wire, and paint with no problems. Same thing applies to the other local locations, they have just what you need without having to travel too far. read more

Went in search of parts for an irrigation project (3 raised flower beds, converting a sprinkler system to drip irrigation).  Bobby helped me out and was very generous with his time and problem solving (and managed to also help 3 other customers at the same time!).  He helped me find both plumbing and irrigation parts and pvc pipe to build a custom solution for our specific needs, and I honestly would not have been able to do it without his help.  All of the folks working at this ACE are super helpful and great, but I wanted to give Bobby a specific shout out since he really went over and beyond to help me.  I'm really happy this is my local hardware store! read more

I had a closet rod that i wanted to cut an inch off. It wasn't purchased there, but figured it was convenient for me to stop by and rather than drive 5 miles to Home Depot. i was denied! I've gone to this ACE Hardware location several times since living in NorCal for just over 3 years now. This review is for their BBQ department which is a standalone dedicated building to all things BBQ. Last week I headed in their after picking up a few things at the main location and was greeted by Kevin. I was looking to pick up a Weber BBQ for our backyard since I regretted not getting one last summer after we purchased our home. The staff were great and knowledgeable and just answered all my questions while I was browsing different models. What I loved the most about my purchase was that they offer free delivery, install/assembly and if you happen to have an old BBQ they would haul that away for you all for free! Today I had my Weber Sprit E-210 LP Black BBQ delivered and the two gentleman were professional, very cogniscient of my home while setting up in the backyard. They had the grill already setup and ready to go once they got to my home. They setup my propane tank went over a few things and showed me a few things and earlier this evening I grilled a nice Bone in Ribeye steak and man I'm so happy I went with this grill and purchased it from the ACE Hardware on Mt. Diablo in Walnut Creek. I have an ACE Hardware store less than a mile from my home however I learned that many stores are independently owned, that store didn't have the grill I wanted nor do they offer free delivery and assembly. I've been in this ACE a few times. What can I say, it is very close to my house and we all need to pick up something from the hardware store every one and a while. I bought a 200 piece rotary tool kit online for $10 (half price) from Ace for pickup from this store. Rotary took kit = Ace brand Dremel compatible for those not in the know. When my order arrived I received a call from Ace, I rolled into the store about 5:00 pm and walked up to the service counter. The lady behind the counter was very prompt and asked me if I needed help. Pulling out my order printout, I said I was here to pick up my order. She sprang to action, looking in the back and calling the online order specialist to help when she couldn't find my item. Unfortunately, they get a star off at this point because I sat there waiting a while for the other person to show up, take my printout and return with my item. On the plus side while waiting I was again asked if I needed help and once the online order person arrived she returned very quickly with my item. In addition, I was given two $5 off $25 coupons and told there are often coupons on the website (bonus) which brought my grouchy feelings back up to being happy, hence the 4 stars. Anyway, the people at ACE have always been polite and helpful on my visits. Separately, they have chipped keys if you need a car key and don't want to pay the dealer price. read more
