Walt's used to be the go-to "special occasion" spot on Main Street. Over the years, the food quality and interior ambiance have gone downhill. The only safe bet in terms of orders are their artichoke appetizer and salads. Everything else is lacking freshness and flavor. Really disappointing given the price tag for some of their seafood dishes. They do have a great wine selection and large seating capacity. read more

I use it to dip my French fries in. - Littleneck clams ; Very tasty, the clams are really fresh and buttery. - Steamed Pei Mussels ; Same as the littleneck clams but w/ mussels. - Coconut Shrimp ; I'm a big fan of coconut shrimp and no where does it better than here. From the outside Walt's Wharf looks a bit tattered and somewhat old school, but don't let that first impression deter you from a delicious meal. This was my first at Walt's Wharf and I was pleasantly surprised. We were in the area and some friends had recommended it, so we decided to try out Walt's Wharf for lunch. Fish and Chips - beer battered Atlantic Cod + classic coleslaw + house fries + tartar sauce. The portion of the fish was nice and came with three pieces. Fish was cooked just right and crispy; a well balanced batter. Coleslaw was standard to what I've had at other places. Instead of fries, I asked to have it replaced with a cup of clam chowder. The clam chowder was creamy and flavorful. The others at the table got the Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos and Pasta Pescatore. They both enjoyed their dishes and recommended it. Restaurant has a neat, older design, which is fitting. Service was pretty good given how busy it was that day. I'm the heart of Seal Beach's Main Street is Walt's Wharf. It's a cute little restaurant with wonderful oak grilled seafood. What a great experience at the Wharf. It's our second time here and I couldn't be more pleased. We've tried the steamed clams Ortega-style and the caramelized salmon. We had lunch here for my Dad's birthday. My Mom had made a reservation and we had a long table set up for us. It was a big party of about 11 people. Our waitress was really nice and accommodating. Some of my relatives had brought wine and my Mom brought a cake that the wait staff poured and served to us. To start I got the lobster bisque and while it did not have any lobster pieces in it it had a deep and rich lobster flavor that was amazing. Some of the best lobster bisque I've ever had. We also had some artichoke to start which was pretty good and came with a mayo based sauce. For my entree I ordered the grilled mahi mahi sandwich. The piece of mahi mahi in my sandwich was very big and the warm and brioche bun held everything together. The fries were thick, yet crispy. All the food here was really good. We came in for a late lunch and chose to sit at lounge area. The bar area looked very cozy and relaxing, our window table was spacious and comfy. The menu was so extensive with lots of good seafood items. The happy hour deals were great on black board so if you are local this is a good happy hour spot from Mon.- Fri. 3-6pm. Table bread was French bread which was yummy with warm butter. We started with clam chowder soup and lobster & artichoke dip with baguettes. The dip was one of the best I'v ever had in a long time. For entrees hubby had clam linguini which was delicious and comforting. I had seafood platter which was fresh and tasty. For drinks I had mimosa, Grey Goose lemon drop and B-52 coffee drink without whipped cream. All drinks were strong and tasty pours. They didn't have espresso so hubby just had coffee which was not strong enough to his liking. The food and drinks were all reasonably priced in healthy portions. Our servers were very friendly and attentive the entire time. We had a very pleasant late lunch here, so glad that we came in to try this great seafood restaurant and bar. Lunch on a Tuesday. Immediately at a window table. Beverage order taken promptly, waters brought without asking. Order taken - fish n chips and Johnny's Salad with Salmon as an entree. Fish had heavy dough and the fries were limp. Specifically ordered Johnnys Salad because it was described as being prepared with Spinach and arugula. The smallish salad came with field greens which were limp from the excessive oily dressing, for $30 I should have returned it. Had to request a refill on the iced tea. With tip a simple underwhelming lunch for 2 with 1 draft IPA was about $100. Parking is challenging. read more

The smell of the fish on the grill were awesome as we waited for our table. We ordered a cup of Clam Chowder, the Catfish, Fish and Chips, and a wedge salad. Incredible Clam Chowder, nice big clams, surprise healthy sized crab pieces, and a great base that was not too creamy. The Catfish was good and well seasoned and the cilantro cream and polenta were a flavorful accompaniment. The fish of the fish and chips was good, nice big uniform pieces of cod, but the fries were soggy. The wedge salad was not so good. Lettuce was a weird texture and not fresh and crispy like you would expect from a wedge salad. For drinks we had a Mai Tai and an Anchor Steam draft beer. The Mai Tai was not very good, lacked the tropical flavor, although the pour seemed generous enough. I think that was because the rum was on top, but the rest was mostly ice. The Anchor Steam was flat. Service and cleanliness were not as good as the food. Service was a little dismissive and inattentive, but it was the cleanliness is what really brought the rating down. The bathroom was disgusting and just an overall slightly grimy surface on everything. Not likely to go back. Prices, mid service, meh drinks. Maybe a Clam Chowder to go in the future. read more

Food: 3.75. Looking for something to do so we drove to Seal Beach. Parking was terrible in the area as it was so busy this day (Sunday). We found a spot behind this restaurant and decided to grab a bite here. Although the Main Street area of the beach was busy, this place wasn't too crowded. We found out later that there was an annual Fish Fry event a block or so away. We were greeted promptly and shown a table. We ordered some drinks first. Later, we ordered a bowl of clam chowder and the fish and chips. I wasn't particularly hungry. Food came out timely and at the right temperature. First was a complimentary basket of warm bread. I love warm bread as a starter. The woman said her Long Island tasted very mild and almost watered down. The chowder was good. Different from previous clam chowders I've had. Portion seemed on the small side for $10. Fish and chips were good. Not a big fan of fish and chips but the woman loves it. It tasted fine to me. Fries were crispy as requested. Coleslaw was plain. Dinner entrees consisted of salmon, fish and chips, wedges, the smallest bowls of clam chowder ever (are you sure you're not confusing cups and bowls?), Alfredo, and something else not worth mentioning. Then had the Walt's Salad with salmon and the Oak Grilled Pacific Halibut. The steamed clams were good. The broth was rich in flavor and balanced. The jalapenos gave it a delightful element of flavor. Good portion of clams. Clams tasted fresh. You can ask for bread, which is a must when eating clams. You get to soak in all the juiciness. My partner loves the Walt's salad with salmon. The dijon vinaigrette pairs nicely with the candied walnuts, raisins, red onion and dried cranberries. The salmon was grilled perfectly. My Oak Grilled Pacific Halibut was overall a good dish. I loved the tangerine glaze. It complimented the halibut well. I truly didn't care for the mango and avocado salsa. I love avocado and mango. I just felt it didn't pair well with the fish. That's just my opinion. The fish itself was nicely grilled on the outside and moist in the inside. It had a lovely crust. I stopped in this past weekend for a quick bite to eat on my way through town. I ordered a half dozen oysters and an order or tuna poke to share. Our server was very pleasant and put our order in right away. We received the oysters a short time later and quickly dove in. The oysters were incredibly fresh and tasty! Some of the best oysters I've ever had! Delicious!!! The Tuna Poke was amazing as well. Tasty and fresh, quite a large plate to share. Enjoyed that very much! Placed a to go order of 3 bowls of clam chowder, pasta pescatore, and fish and chips. A little expensive, but everything was solid. The food was ready within 10 minutes and all staff were friendly and helpful. The clam chowder is a thicker one, with lots of chunks of clam goodness. I think it would have benefited from being in a bread bowl to aid with the saltiness, but complimentary bread was provided with takeout (two pieces) as well as oyster crackers with each bowl. The fish and chips were super fresh and delicious! Fish was tender and the fries were perfectly crisp. The pasta has thick noodles and is LOADED with fish and other seafood. Took a couple of friends there to celebrate A birthday mid week we wanted the bar but it's tiny and was already full even with reservations . So we ended up downstairs in a cute little corner. Outstanding service (Merian ) excellent margaritas, imaginative menu. A wee bit pricey but in my opinion good choice for lunch and a special occasion. UPDATE: FOOD POISONING! The night of visiting this restaurant, after writing out my review, my husband got food poisoning from the trout. I didn't think it important to mention this, but I was waiting for the restroom for 3ish mins and a worker flushed and came out without washing. I'm not saying this contributed, but its gross and coupled with the food poisoning and over priced, bland fish, we will not be back. Went on a Friday at 230pm with a party of 5. Sat immediately. Clean restrooms, but u walk through the service area. The waitress, McKayla, was amazing. She realized we didn't like an entree and insisted we not pay for it and gave us extra soup. She was very attentive as well. We ordered 2 articoke dips (4 out of 5 stars), oysters (4/5), fish & chips (3/5), Idaho trout almondine (3.5), macadamia nut crusted halibut (3.5/5), caramelized king salmon (2.5/5 the caramelized part was not good), & baked snapper (2/5). Most of the fish was bland and the toppings/flavors did not add anything to it. Clam chowder was the best I've ever tasted, green beans were great, mashed potatoes, rice pilaf & side salad were good, & asparagus was ok. For the price ($300 w/ tip & tax) I wouldn't go back.
