Wasabi's fish quality and presentation is on a much higher level that the nearby competitors. I tried the love boat and was very pleased. I would lean toward the raw options more than the cooked options. The slices of fish are healthy sized but not clunky. Its rough out here on 86th street because there are so many sushi options. Additionally, this is right next to the, arguably, most popular one. That being said though, if you hate the line and don't mind paying a little extra for a better experience, come here. We visited this place for dinner tonight. The place wasn't crowded when we arrived so we were able to find a table quickly. Our dinner for tonight was Yaki Soba (shrimp), a Spider Roll, a Strawberry & Lobster roll, and finally fried red bean ice cream for dessert. The Yaki Soba was decent and was our salty dish. The Spider roll was pretty good as there was just the right amount of crunchiness and softness to be edible. The Strawberry & Lobster roll surprised us with its spicy fish eggs that we originally thought was from the wasabi. Finally, the Fried Ice Cream (red bean flavor) made for a good dessert. It was basically a bar of ice cream that was covered in cake dough, fried, and then sliced. I liked that the waitress refilled our cups with green tea quite a few times. The seating service was quick. The ambiance of the restaurant is casual with dim lighting. It's not very roomy and the seating is usually best if it's in groups of 4 or below. The sushi quality is alright. There weren't a lot of sushi choices. The baked oysters here are good. The noodles they have are pretty good too. The have flavor and is well seasoned. I came with my family and we took 7 seats. They had to move other individual tables to make a big table for us which was very good customer service. However, every time a staff walks by with plates of food, my family and I are always worried they will spill, drop, or touch our belongings accidentally, ultimately dirtying it. Not the best sushi place in the area, but they do have some delicious cakes. I may be biased because I already have a favorite sushi place in the area, but people have agreed with me that Wasabi is good, but not really anything special. As usual, I ordered my sushi and an Alaskan roll. The Alaskan rolls are different here from what I'm used to because it only has salmon and avocado (isn't that a salmon avocado roll?). It wasn't anything too memorable, but it wasn't bad at all. The salmon sushi pieces were not bad as well. But unlike some other sushi I've tried, it doesn't melt in your mouth and you had to put some effort in chewing, which I wasn't a big fan of. The good thing was that the fish to rice ratio was like 2 to 1, so you didn't just have a mouthful of rice. I also white tuna sushi. Surprisingly, I liked the white tuna more because it tasted so fresh. I'd order this again if I came here. I did really enjoy the dessert though. They have about 7 or 8 items on their dessert menu (which is a lot more than their competitors) and they serve some delicious cakes. I got to try both the green tea crepe cake and the chocolate forest (?) cake and they were both really good. Like some other yelpers say, the green tea crepe cake was very comparable to Lady M. Every time I talk about cakes like this, I crave another slice! I'd DEFINITELY be back for that cake, but probably not for the sushi. I hope they don't mind if I come here just for some dessert... The prices at Wasabi are higher than the surrounding areas. They come in orders of two so you can't order one piece of each fish from the a la carte menu. Even though it comes in two, it still comes out a bit pricey. They do have the AYCE menu which I think is more popular for this place, but I didn't try that. The prices for the weekend are also higher, so be prepared if you go on a Friday or weekend, because its like a $5 difference. Service on the other hand was just so-so. I speak Cantonese so I heard a bunch of waitresses just chatting away with either customers or their co-workers. I'm fine with people chatting, but I do need some kind of attention for my tea, menu, and dessert requests. They were a little slow, but their attitudes were positive and I didn't mind them that much. Overall, I like Wasabi. It looks pretty nice inside and I didn't have a bad experience. There is a deficit in staff but they manage (it's a matter of whether you're really hungry or not, as well as how crowded it is). The food is definitely higher quality compared to those I've seen around the area and the prices are decent (they're a bit more on the affordable scale of sushi, but expect the prices to rise with inflation as such). Walking into Wasabi is no different than walking into any other Japanese restaurant. I mean, there is a fish tank to your left as you walk in and the sushi chefs on the right. (There are always at least two of them there.) The only visible difference is the service staff. They're always smiling and always eager to serve their customers. (In other places, the wait staff looks bored and/or tired but almost always bewildered by the amount of food that the average American consumes.) During the lunch hours, unless you specify otherwise, the waiter/waitress hands you their special lunch menu. On this menu, rolls are listed for $2.50/each and sushi & sashimi cost $1/pc. (Of course, the selection is limited.) A bento lunch box is $10 and comes with miso soup, kani salad, 1 California roll, 3 pieces gyoza or 3 pieces shumai, and white rice, with whatever entree you order. I always opt for the salmon teriyaki. (Which is delectable -- always cooked well -- and comes with broccoli and carrots.) However, they also have other teriyakis and some tempuras. For dessert, I always order fried red bean ice cream. It comes cut into 6 pieces/slices, with whipped cream on top, on a chilled plate. It's simple yet so amazingly good. This is my go-to sushi spot for lunch. I LOVE their lunch menu. From noon to 4:30pm every day, they offer $2.50 rolls and $1.00 sushi. Their ingredients are perhaps the freshest around the neighborhood. They also have the best bento boxes. I like them for the fact that they're only $10 and instead of the usual yucky green salad, they give you kani salad. If you can't make it to lunch, their menu is somewhat pricey (compared to the bunch of Japanese restaurants around it) but for the quality of food and their extraordinary menu, I would pay the extra money. Appetizers, the iitako (cold baby octopus), baked oysters, and hamachi kama are my favorites. Sushi, of the few special rolls that I tried, my favorite is the Phoenix Roll. The mango really gives the sushi a fresh kick. Kitchen food, they have the most tender udon. Teriyaki's aren't bad either. DESSERTS! This is where the magic comes in. The selection that they offer is none that you can find in the area. The Green Tea Crepe Cake and Green Forest are DELICIOUS! Pretty sure they're imported but that's none of my concern as long as they taste good. However, the fried ice cream, they might've made themselves... I love Lady M's mille crepe cakes, and Wasabi allows me to fulfill my cravings without having to make a trip into the city. I've been here several times to get the cakes to go, and while waiting at the sushi bar I noticed some seriously delicious looking sushi being made and served. Their prices seemed really fair as well when I glanced over the menu, so I made a note to try their sushi one of these days. Having already memorized half the menu from my previous visits here, I ordered right away - the sashimi special. The selection was pretty standard: tuna, salmon, yellowtail, surf clam, white tuna and octopus. Naturally, I ended the meal with a slice of green tea mille crepe from Lady M. I came here on a Friday night around 8PM and there was about a 20 minute wait. The price is comparable to the sushi places around it .. about $5 for a regular roll and about $10 for one of the more fancy rolls. Everything was made to perfection with the utmost precision. My parents don't like eating raw fish and there were a host of rolls to choose from for them as well. One of my favorite dishes on their menu is of course the fried ice cream!! It comes with a generous portion size and they're already cut up into pieces for easy sharing. This is definitely a local gem and I hope it stays in the neighborhood for years to come. read more

The menu is similar to other sushi restaurant with minimal differences (price and selection wise). The freshness of the raw and quality of cooked food is average. They have a decent selection beverage: sodas, beer, sake, etc. Depending on the night, due to the "All you can eat", the place can be busy and waiting time can be as long as 40mins. I have been coming to this restaurant since mid 2008; although the food was only average, the service and honesty of the staff is wonderful. They are very friendly and honest when asked if a certain dish is worth eating; or simply if you are unsure unsure if the fish is fresh. This is the reason why I keep coming back time after time.
