I had a very nice experience on a Friday morning. There was no wait but a good amount of people dining. The food was very good. The restaurant itself is bright and clean. Used to be my go-to diner. The burger deluxe platter to go is a better than average burger, but the prices here have become very expensive. A couple of burgers and a large chocolate cheap cookie to go is very pricey. The manager and staff are always friendly, although they can get distracted with many phone calls for orders. Charging fee for credit cards is annoying in a place like this. Bring down the price, and it would be very nice! read more

This is a pretty solid diner experience. Located on the corner of 20th and 1st, this is a pretty bare bones establishment and isn't going to win any ambiance awards - BUT I think for the price, service and taste it really shines. Brunch is a nice affair - the front of the store is all opened up to let the breeze in from outside. $5.99 mimosas and bellinis, brunch specials that run around $25. The omelettes brunch meals are $23.95. This includes: 1) omelette of your choosing 2) a mimosa or bellini with 1 refill 3) the menu said that I would have a mimosa/bellini or coffee/tea/juice but they also included coffee 4) 2 pieces of toast 5) a bowl of fruit 6) a huge helping of hashbrowns Had the iron man omelette - a good amount of cheddar; would've liked for there to be some onion or peppers in this but couldn't find any of the combinations they offered with all the toppings I wanted. Not sure if they offer a build your own option for the omelette brunches since they're sort of pre-selected so I just went with it. Fluffy and all around decent, no other complaints. The hashbrowns are a little on the mushy side on the bottom but nice and crispy on top. This is likely because they give you such a large helping. And they're a little on the less seasoned side but nothing you can't fix with a little salt. The fruit is actually pretty impressive - extremely fresh especially for diner food. We had melons, grapefruit and grapes. Toast served with little packets of butter and jam - nothing to write home about there. Orange juice is made fresh in house - there's a little machine in back. The drink itself has a bit of a strong flavor from the champagne but still rather enjoyable. Pancakes - under $10. Fluffy, tasty. Doesn't dry out too quickly. Nothing to complain about here either. Service is slow at times due to how busy it is, but friendly and they offer things even you may have forgotten to ask about. read more

This is my local diner, and I go there a lot (I've also been frequently told by people just how good it is). I think it's great for simple breakfast foods--anything else I've gotten there has been bleh. Most notably the chicken and waffles. The server told me it would take longer to prepare because the chicken was cooked fresh to order (which is great!) but when it did come out it was some of the driest, toughest chicken I've had... That said, their omelettes and pancakes are amazing, and it's a wonderful old fashioned diner with great service--just stick to the simple orders. read more

A great place to get breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner. Nested on first avenue it's one of the best little spots to get a little bit of everything. The place has a decent area for seating groups of people, they accommodated my group of 6 easily during the morning. They have s great menu with lots to choose from and since it was brunch I decided to go with the chocolate pancakes and a beacon egg and cheese bagel sandwich. Let me just break down the taste of this beacon egg and cheese bagel in one word...AMAZING! The bagel was nice and soft, warm not hard the beacon was crispy and thick. The pancakes was nice and fluffy and of course perfect distribution of chocolate chip to add to the sweetness. This helped compliment the sandwich and provided a nice treat to my other members in my party who kept eyeing it like a hawk. The staff was super friendly and a pleasure to deal with. The service was great food came out fast and hot no complaints and everyone's order was perfect. Most definitely a repeat visit will happen in the near future. read more

Having eaten at the Cooper for over 20 years I was looking forward to an great, comfort food experience. I ordered an old favorite - open faced Turkey Sandwich with Giblet gravy. Unfortunately, someone made the decision to add spices to the gravy that utterly ruined the "comfort" experience. It seems that Indian or Mexican spices have taken over everything now, and you cannot escape them. The "sandwich" was inedible, so I returned it, which the waiter happily took back and I ordered another old favorite: meat loaf. However, my hopes were dashed when the mushroom gravy was similarly spiced, therefore similarly inedible. I could barely contain my frustration. Mom came in from NJ for a few days and she loves a good diner. NYC doesn't have the best so I turned to my trusty Yelp app and typed something in along the lines of "good diner breakfasts". One of their photos caught my eye so we chose to try it out! Crispy bacon. Hot coffee. Nothing special but they do breakfast right! Service is slow but not everyone runs everywhere like I do so it's fine. Come here if you have time to kill in the morning :) Oh oh, and they're like the only breakfast spot in Gramercy they serves HASH BROWNS. Like jersey diner type. Not McDonald's hashbrown module formed things. And not those wack ass roasted potatoes. They serve actual good jersey hashbrowns! Yummy and happy with all of it. The toast was overdone to my tastes but some people like it crispier - if you don't, maybe tell them in advance. Service was good but a little slow. Our server was sooooo nice though. If there is one type of restaurant that must endure this ongoing pandemic it is the American diner. I always support my favorite diner in the first NYC neighborhood I lived as a proud SUNY Optometry student! I love lunches, and dinners here but it is the breakfast I really come for. I was patient when they called to say they had to replace my $4.85 cappuccino with a $2.20 regular coffee at my expense. Hard times for everyone. But then they delivered inedible french toast. (See below.) Completely burnt on the outside and mushy raw egg on the inside. Maybe when you cook something you can't tell that it is raw on the inside....but any one can clearly see how burnt it is.
