This just have been my first attempt at ever trying Indonisian Cusinese. It just so happens it happened to be here down in SoCal while visiting family. Came for a Christmas Dinner and they were open til 8:30 on Christmas. Wong Java House is located in Alhambra, and there isn't much of a parking lot for their customers, you'll have to park on the street. The restaurant itself is pretty small, only a few tables to sit and eat. It's best to call ahead if you have a big group, like we did. We had a group of 10. First we started off by ordering some drinks. They brought Ice Water for everyone in our table. We ordered a Thai Tea, 3 Hot Waters, 2 Avocado Smoothies, and some Iced Coffee I believe. The Thai Tea didn't really have that Thai Tea flavor, but it was okay, not sweet enough for me. The Avocado Smoothies were alright. We ordered 2 appetizers, Beef Martabak and a Tofu appeitizer. Both of them were okay and decent, the Beef Martabak was flaky and decent. The Whole Fried Chicken was delicious! It really was a huge piece of chicken cooked and fried to perfection! I loved this one, the meat was super juicy and the skin was very crispy. We had a noodle dish and a fried rice dish, both were excellent as well. I loved the flavors of them both. The fried rice was really good, great flavors! We had a Spicy soup which was good for the coldness of the night. Had flavors unique to Indonisian cusine. The Beef, Pork and Lamb Kabobs were good as well. They were juicy and flavorful and not tough at all. Really soft and good. We ordered a fried fish as well. It was pretty good, very flavorful, the fish seemed decently fresh and was good. Plenty of sauce for the fish, made it very flavorful. Then finally we had the Beef Rendang which was a little tough, but it was still pretty good. It's beef so it can be expected not to be so soft and a little tough. A little spicy kick to the beef as well made it good and flavorful. Then for like a little dessert we had sorta like a sticky rice with coconut in it. It was alright, not to bad. The service was a bit slow, but that's because it's a small restaurant and therefore being only 1 waitress. She was attention, but it just took a while because she was the only one working. For my first trying Indonisian cusine, I would say I liked it. I don't give 5 stars often, but this place was pretty good. The fried chicken, I liked the most!! read more

I was on vacation in Bali Indonesia this past July so I had to try out a neighborhood restaurant to compare the quality. I asked the waitress what was a favorite or special dish they serve here and she said if I like rice dishes I should try the #26 Nasi Rames. Wong Java is a small, unassuming restaurant on Valley Blvd. TBH I would have never found this place if it weren't for my friend's recommendation. I thought the food here was pretty good, not exceptional, but pretty good. I got the fried rice and fried noodles, the noodles was a bit dry and lacking in flavor. Friendly service in the SGV! The waiter was courteous and happily explained some of their popular items. We ordered the chicken satay -- hot, fresh and flavorful! Definitely a great start to our dinner. Also ordered the Nasi rendang -- which reminded me of a bento box -- there was a nice variety of meats/veggies on a bed of white rice. Just moved to the neighborhood and after cleaning all morning found this little gem on yelp! Very happy I found the place. I tried one of the soups, B6 & a dish, G3... my my my, the flavors on both dishes was mind blowing. For the soup, very flavorful and great, I would suggest getting g a side of rice to enjoy it slightly better. For G3, it almost seemed like an appetizer of different meats in a bed of yellow rice, oh man, that rice! Both meals are excellent. Very good Indo food in Alhambra! I actually almost never crave any kind of food, the one exception being Indonesian food. This place does a great job satisfying those cravings. Though it's a typically small Indonesian restaurant, the menu is surprisingly varied: they have lots of rice and noodle dishes, a good number of vegetable dishes, meats and even seafood (if you've never tried Indo seafood before, you've gotta have it). I've been here a couple of times now, and it always hits the spot. Everything I've tried has ranged from pretty good to excellent. Definitely recommended if you haven't yet tried Indo food or are just craving some (they even have a TV showing Indonesian channels!). I also should note that the food isn't too spicy, which works great for me. Also, this is an Asian restaurant in the 626 which actually accept credit cards! read more

First time having Indonesian food and loved it! My Indonesian friend recently posted some pix of food from here on fb, and I just had to know where he ate. I'm so glad he recommended this place to me. I got #28 which consisted of fried chicken, beef, and hard-boiled flavored egg, and all of it was so flavorful (please refer to my picture as I'm definitely not giving it a deserved description). I loved that the sauce from the egg soaked into my rice for max goodness. Prices are really decent (my plate was $7.50) and portions are just right. It's enough food to satisfy your hunger without feeling like your stomach is going to give up on you. I even had half of my rice leftover. I really enjoyed having a variety of proteins and a variety of flavors on one plate so that I won't have to order multiple entrees. As far as location, it's in the more east part of Alhambra on Valley where it gets pretty desolate. This place is easy to miss if you're not actively searching for it. But it's less hustle-bustle which is a plus, street parking won't be a problem to find. I'm definitely going to try more Indonesian food! read more

Went there on a weekday AFTER rush hour lunch time. All I ordered is a satay and fried rice take out which should be very simple and quick to do. Instead waited 45 min!! At the end the lady tells me they don't accept credit card!!! Luckt they accept zelle. So pissed about the whole experience. Not like I'm looking for Michelin star fine dining high end food service but jeez 45 min for a fried rice???? Not worth it no matter how good it is. Every time I visit SoCal, no matter where I go, I always come to this place. I don't care if I have to hold my hungry tummy for a while just to get the food. That's how good this place is. *****BEST MAIN DISHES (so far) Good for kids: - Chicken fried rice - Fried chicken - Oxtail soup Good for people who like spicy food: - Penyet komplit (fried chicken, tempeh and tofu with belacan chili paste) - Sambal terasi (belacan chili paste) is THE BEST! - Nasi bungkus/rames/padang ****AMBIENCE: Homey, comfortable. *****OWNER and STAFF: The owner is a very nice and helpful. Food ordered: nasi kuning, kangkung belacan, bakmi ayam, bihun goreng, es campur and cendol. If you like garlic, then you would enjoy the food. To us, it's a bit too much. The cendol was a bit disappointing because it's too watered down with coconut milk, but not enough gula jawa or the gula jawa is too watered down. As the result, it's missing the aromatic gula jawa flavor. The cendol is chewy though but not proportionate with the glass jar. The es campur is good. read more

Service --good, no complaints. Food--unhappy I ordered: Beef Rendang--flavor is ordinarily good, portion is exceptionally small. 5 small cubes of beef for $11.99. That's exorbitantly expensive ! Ayam Kremes--one small Cornish chicken, okay flavor. My first time eating this so can't compare its flavor. Think it's $13. Blachan kangkung--very small dish, smaller than lunch special at a Chinese restaurant. Flavor is okay, not good. They skimped on the blachan so couldn't taste much of it. Rice-$1.50 a small bowl. Chili sauces--I liked the blachan chili paste. All in all, it's disappointing and I'm not sure if I'll come again. read more

This was my first time at this place. Although the food was good, the service is a little slow. There was one server and he was not aware of his surroundings. He would serve the table next to mine and then immediately head back to the cashier area without looking to see if any of the other tables needed assistance. I had to flag him down several times just to get a new bottle of water. And we ordered their signature rice dish, but the dish never came to our table. I had to check the status of that dish with the owner. It wasn't until then that she assured me that dish was still being worked on. All in all, the food was great. This place is LEGIT. My mom is from Indonesia and we'd go all the time when I was younger. Wong Java House had me hella nostalgic at the first dish. Chicken Satay - SO good. The peanut sauce over it is delicious. We got a side of lontong (Indonesian sticky rice cake) to go with it. Highly recommend doing that to dip in the sauce. Ayam Kremes- fried chicken with a crunchy garnish. I honestly don't know what's in the garnish besides coriander but it's so good I was picking at it throughout the meal. The chicken itself is perfectly cooked, crunchy skin on the outside, moist on the inside, spiced just the right amount. Get this highly recommend, it was my favorite of everything and everything was good. Nasi Bunkus- if you aren't sure what to get from the a la carte portion of the menu, this is a good option. It's basically coconut rice with two kinds of meat, egg, and jackfruit with a kinda curry-ish sauce on top. Ask for some sambal ito to come with it. On choy- have trouble eating veggies? Not with this dish!! We asked for it super spicy, but it wasn't actually that hot so we added sambal to it. This was the first plate to be cleared cause it was so good. If you like that hint shrimp paste flavor, you'll love this. Beef Rendang- a must get. Very tender fall-apart beef in a curry sauce. One of the best dishes. If you like Indonesian food, if you want to try it, if you don't know what you feel like eating, if you're even just a little hungry come here. I live in SF but maybe twice a year visit my family in the SGV so I need them to still be in business the next time I'm back. read more

It's a love and hate relationship with this restaurant. Love the food. Hate their business practice. Check your receipt. They will sneak in extra prices. If you get your food to go, check the food before you leave. You might be missing a few pieces of chicken, sauces, or meat. Food is delicious. However, it is expensive especially for the portion size. Then there is their questionable business practice. Although the staff and owners are friendly, they will nickel and dime you for everything. We were warned about this by our friends. One stopped going because she just didn't like their business practice. Another told us that she ordered a whole chicken but only got one leg/thigh. She also didn't recommend us going here either. Surprisingly, there is another yelp review that stated the missing chicken pieces also occurred to them. We decided to give this place a try anyway (thinking that our experience was going to be different). First time we went, they charged us 50 cents more on a few dishes. We didn't say anything because we felt that bad that the place was pretty empty on a Saturday night during dinner time. We like supporting mom n pop places like this but it left us a bad impression. Because we liked some of the dishes, we came back a 2nd time. Again, this time $1 extra charge on a dish. Wtf. I just read the other yelp reviews and it seems that this is a common practice at this restaurant. So yeah, I hope the owners are reading this. By trying to get a few more dollars here and there, you are losing hundreds, possibly even thousands, of dollars. By trying to be cheap and saving a few bucks, you are losing your customers. If the prices have indeed changed, change it officially on all of the menus. Your customers might not be saying anything to you in person because they're trying to be nice and support you. However, you are making them feel cheated and leaving with a desire to never come back. I think we all would've came back so much more often if you actually honor the menu prices and give the actual portion sizes instead of trying to cheat your customers. Be up front with the actual costs for everything. We would've been regular customers coming in several times a month... but instead we've decided that we are done feeling cheated and irritated after our meals. I often dream about the Nasi Bungkus. The first time I tried it, I was hooked. The dish is packed with flavor, from the jerky, to the chicken to the rice and sauces. I took home my leftovers and they were even better the next day. This restaurant has become one of my favorites. It's small, but has a lot of character and the owners are wonderful and kind people. The customer service is excellent and you can tell the people who work here are proud of the food they serve. I went to Amsterdam after, which is known for their Indonesian food. I searched for similar dishes but couldn't find any. As soon as I came back to LA, I came straight here for the Nasi Bungkus. read more
