I expected more from this place upon entering but was disappointed in the end. Our table ordered six different dishes and only two of them were worth getting. The sand chicken and the Indonesian fried rice were the only ones we liked. The filet mignon rice was just OK. I guess you just have to know what's good here and not diverge or you'll be disappointed. The sand chicken was the only dish on the chefs special menu that was good. It is dark meat chicken similar to Hainan chicken but you don't get the special rice. Dipping sauce is similar, with ginger and green onions. Indonesian fried rice was very flavorful! Definitely recommended. DO NOT get the Japanese wood case ramen, the Japanese wood case cubed pork with rice, or the baked pork chop. Personally I would never get ramen at a place that does not specialize in it but someone in our party wanted ramen. Tasted super funky! The cubed pork with rice had mushrooms in the picture on the menu but there were no mushrooms in my dish! Only tofu, corn, pork, egg, and a whole lot of rice. Lots and lots of rice! Totally not worth it and did not finish it. Another disappointment was the baked pork chop. I did not try it but everyone else that did said the sauce was not good at all and did not finish it. I've been hearing some good things about this place and I finally had the opportunity to drop by this place. I know the area very well, but this restaurant is not easy to find. It is located in a very small, run down plaza. This place is hard to find because it shares a lot with a auto body shop, which is located right behind WeChat Cafe. When you approach the restaurant, you notice that the restaurant windows are tinted....yeah, not shady looking at all. When I walked in, the host was very attentive and got me seated immediately. The menu was small, but they had a good variety going for them. The waiter recommended their baked pasta. So, my friend and I ordered the chicken and the pork baked bolognese. I do have to say, that I liked the pork just a bit better. However, both were really good. If I were to rank all the different bolognese I've had through my life of eating at cafes, I will rank this at the top. The sauce was very good and you can taste real tomatoes! The pork looked like it was deep fried first and then added, which gave it a really nice texture. My only con about the dish was the portions. The portion was not as big as other cafes, but the prices are just about the same. We also ordered their lemon iced tea. It was refreshing but no different than other cafes in the area. The restaurant was not nicely decorated. It was empty when we arrived. The tables appeared to be clean, but was a little sticky. The windows, as I mentioned, were tinted and you can tell that they were tagged with graffiti...that's what you get for opening up a place in El Monte though! Luckily, the service here was great. The guys that worked there spoke Cantonese but also spoke enough English to serve people like me. They dropped by several times to refill our tea. New Zealand Grilled Lamb: A friend of mine ordered this medium well. The meat was very tender but not wowed at it. I've had better lamb else where. Vegetables was included on the dish with rice. Needless to say it was ok.. Baked Sole Fillet with Spinach over Pasta: As heavy as this dish looks.. Surprisingly didn't feel heavy eating it. Matter fact, so salty that I'd actually just prefer the bake pasta with spinach alone and without the fish. But you do get to choose rice or pasta with this dish. A cafe named after a chatting app! Pretty funny. Came in on a Sunday afternoon and it seems like they have some pretty good business. Place is pretty small, but they had enough waiters to serve us. I'll have to give it to them for customer service. They're doing a pretty good job compared to other Hong Kong styled cafes in the 626 area. Food presentation was a lot better than other cafes as well. But the reason why I gave a 3 star rating was because of the taste. Food was a bit bland, even though it looked nice. Most of it did not have enough flavoring or salt to it. The baked mussels were not bad though, but again it was bland. They were really big compared to the ones you get at other places, which is a plus. Your typical HK cafe food & price. The presentation of the food is better than most of the cafe, but taste is about the same as most of the HK cafés around the San Gabriel area. They give you good size portion of food here and also come with creme brûlée for desert. A lot of my friends come here just for the creme brûlée. The service is quite nice for HK cafés standard. The staff were very accommodating especially since my family couldn't really make up their mind on what they'd like and my uncle misunderstood some of the specials deals available. Decor-- I'm confused by it. The name "wechat" cafe makes it sound like a hip place for people to hang and connect. However, there are HK street signs all over and It's neither a family restaurant or a comfy tea house. They seem to have more families tho, maybe it's bcus I went during dinner time. Food-- I didn't have high hopes walking in due to the extensive menu that spans from Chinese to German to Japanese foods. We ordered a variety: baked pork chops with marinara sauce over rice, curry chicken, lemongrass pork chops, German pork knuckle, and beef stir fried udon. I'm surprised by how well the proteins were cooked. I didn't try any meat that was over done. The udon has a great chewy texture to it. We very much enjoyed the lemongrass pork chop. I mean even prior to entering, there were like graffiti on the side windows of the restaurant. But hey, at least it wasn't derogatory. However, upon arrival, the place had a cool interior. It was very wooden yet simple. I really enjoyed the "chill" environment. The staff here are typical-- nothing too spectacular. The food here is alright. I ended up with the grilled pork chop with lemon grass and tried the other entrees my family ordered such as the german knuckle pork chop. The food was decent, it was a little bland-- but bearable (thanks to Sriracha). The portion was small compared to other cafes (including the unlimited lemon ice tea cup). For the three dishes, it was roughly ~$35-- which made the price a tad overpriced for just HK cafe styled food (especially since other places serve you way more food). Overall, this place was decent. I wouldn't recommend coming here on an empty stomach because the portions are rather small. When I asked the man on the phone if they still have their "WeChat Cafe All Day Special" menu that I saw here in yelp, he was confused at first, then later said "oh yeah we do!" So I proceeded to order 4 items, 2 from the special menu. When I went to pick up the order, each of the 4 items were at least $3-$4 more than you see here on yelp. When I questioned the prices of the special menu items, he said "oh right.. we need to update the prices on the web (meaning yelp probably)." They basically don't have that daily special menu anymore. What he should've done was told me over the phone that they still have the items that were on that special menu, but prices will be different. Instead he left that out because he was desperate for business. The food is okay but they definitely do not justify the prices, not to mention their portions are tiny. I wanted hot milk tea, being that it's a HK cafe style, and they are out! (What?) They have the iced version so I said ok but half sweet, and it came out pretty sweet still.
