WeChat Cafe is a solid, long-standing spot in El Monte that really delivers on authentic Hong Kong flavors. I recently visited during their special promotion for the clay pot rice, and it was an absolute steal for the price and portion size in LA. I highly recommend the "Sorrowful Soul" Char Siu Rice . The char siu had the perfect fat-to-lean ratio with slightly charred edges, and pairing it with the runny egg yolk and sweet glaze was pure comfort food. My friend ordered the Thai Minced Pork Rice , which was surprisingly well-adapted for a Cantonese palate--not too spicy, incredibly fragrant, and perfectly mixed with the egg. If you're craving something different, the Scallion Oil Mixed Steak is pan-fried beautifully with a great char, and you absolutely cannot leave without trying their thick French toast with peanut butter and honey. The menu is huge, covering everything from Western steaks to classic dim sum, making it a great spot for both solo diners and large groups. We ordered the Thai minced pork rice, BBQ pork with fried egg, the scallion combo platter, and their famous roasted pork knuckle. Everything came out fresh, and the portions were surprisingly generous for the price. The Thai minced pork rice was flavorful and perfect with the fried egg, while the BBQ pork was tender with a nice sweet glaze. The scallion sauce on the combo platter was also a standout. The roasted pork knuckle had crispy skin and juicy meat, and it's easy to see why it's one of their signature dishes. My review is not about the food but the owner. Remember when I was young, this owner just opened a new restaurant and he tried to hire some employees. I went to the job interview. Then he asked me and other employees to do free work before the opening. I was a young poor student. I almost don't have money to get food at that time. Also, I had so many homework to do. But the owner didn't let me back to home even though I spend a half day there already and no wages. He told me it's not okay to leave now. After the opening, he fired me at the very first day. I feel so sorry for the owner who hired a horrible customer services waiter that continuously screw up his business. This idiot usually attend in the afternoon shift and pick up phone call for to go order. Every time he greets people with low flat voice in bad attitude, and sounds like a petulant child. Generously loaded with meat and vegetables, the large portion could easily feed 3 people. So so dishes was Mi Bo Kho was way too gloopy, rather than the rich, fulled bodied. It was lukewarm and many pieces were just fat. Bot Chien arrived last to our table and ended up being a greasy mess. It's safe to say I'll be returning to our OG location where every dish is consistently good.

The atmosphere is good for small groups. I didn't see many large tables, but they can push tables together for bigger parties.

This is a restaurant for people who truly understand and respect the craft of traditional Cantonese seafood cooking, with deep technique, confidence, and experience. With that level of trust in the kitchen, I brought along an incredible wine and a fresh premium sake specifically for pairing. Cantonese cuisine has always felt misunderstood outside of Cantonese circles. People often reduce it to "light" cooking, when in reality its foundation is precision, freshness and timing. The best Cantonese kitchens do not hide ingredients behind heavy seasoning, they amplify them. But true banquet-style Cantonese cooking can also be bold, deeply savory, and layered with flavor when the dish calls for it. I started by inspecting the live Alaskan Red King Crab, and this massive monster was about as fresh as it gets. I asked the kitchen to prepare it three different ways to showcase their versatility. Steamed with Garlic & Chenpi (陳皮蒜蓉蒸): This was pure nostalgia. Using aged tangerine peel is an old-school Cantonese seafood cooking. The earthy citrus aroma elevated the sweetness of the crab without overwhelming its natural flavor. Typhoon Shelter Style (避風塘炸蟹身): The crab body was fried with garlic and chili. The wok hei (鑊氣) here was exceptional, that elusive fire-kissed aroma and high-heat intensity that only comes from true Cantonese wok mastery. Crispy, savory, aromatic, and dangerously addictive. Crab Roe Sticky Rice (蟹膏炒糯米飯): An ultimate Cantonese comfort dish. The rice absorbed every drop of the rich crab roe, becoming deeply savory, creamy, and intensely fragrant. Next came the Steamed Leopard Coral Grouper (清蒸東星斑). You can judge a Cantonese chef by their steamed fish because there is nowhere to hide. Timing is everything. The fish arrived perfectly cooked, just barely opaque, silky, delicate, and sliding effortlessly off the bone. The superior soy sauce was balanced beautifully, enhancing the fish without becoming overly salty or aggressive. To pair with the seafood, I opened the limited edition Fudo "Rainbow" Namagenshu sake (虹の不動レインボー山田錦35％磨き純米大吟醸生原酒), and the pairing was extraordinary throughout the meal. This sake carries an incredibly clean and refined profile that mirrors the purity of premium Cantonese seafood cooking. Instead of competing with the dishes, it amplified the sweetness, texture, and natural umami of the crab and fish. The freshness and liveliness from the namagenshu style brought energy to the pairing, while the aromatic lift cut beautifully through the scallion oil, garlic, crab roe richness, and soy-based seasoning without overpowering the delicacy of the seafood itself. This is the kind of pairing logic you find at very high-level Japanese-Chinese banquet tables, thoughtful, restrained, and deeply ingredient-driven. After the seafood, we moved into the roasted and braised dishes alongside a bottle of 2002 Lafite. A lot of people instinctively associate old Bordeaux with Western red meat, but mature Cantonese roast meats actually pair remarkably well with aged Pauillac because both are built around savory depth, aromatic layering, rendered fat, and controlled richness rather than brute force. The trio included: Roast Goose (燒鵝), Braised Young Pigeon (紅燒乳鴿 ), and Traditional Salt-Baked Chicken (古法鹽焗雞). The strongest pairing of the night was the roast goose. The rendered goose fat, crisp skin, and succulent meat interacted beautifully with the mature Lafite. The wine's softened tannins melted into the richness of the goose, while the cedar, tobacco, earthy notes, and subtle dried fruit mirrored the caramelized edges and savory depth of the roast. One final detail that truly separates Xiang Ji from most modern Cantonese restaurants is their Bring Your Own Ingredients (來料加工) policy. This speaks volumes about the chef's mastery and culinary confidence. Unlike many modern kitchens that operate strictly within a controlled menu system, these chefs are willing to work with whatever exceptional ingredient a customer brings in, rare seafood, premium shellfish, specialty fish, or seasonal live ingredients.
