To me, if I consider the $150 price point for the meal, paying simply for presentation is not enough, especially if you consider other restaurants competing at this price point in the Austin area. Very few of the dishes had any real flavor advancements/innovations past the original Chinese dish it was based on. For example, the salt and pepper lobster comes out in this fancy wide wooden dish, filled with dried peppers, and then is seated on a textured stone bowl with sliced lettuce under the lobster tail. All to get 2 bites of typical tasting lobster. Was the lobster good? yes, but the general feeling is pay more to get better presentation, and less food for the money, not a food taste upgrade. To be fair, that may be what the restaurant is targeting. To contextualize Ling's kitchen, I feel as if you would be able to get a larger version of most if not all dishes, with similar quality in Houston for $20. For $150 you would be able to feed an entire family with drinks and dessert normally so I do not feel as if the money is worth it. When you arrive, you are gathered in a side room with the other guests and served prosecco or tea, and a tasty opening bite. Our hosts were Nick and Mateo, and they were solid throughout the meal. If you want any wine/sake, you get that selected at this time (bottles only). We chose a sauv blanc from Round Pond, a CA vineyard where we'd visited with family years ago. Many of the dishes are seafood so this was a nice pairing. Once the group has arrived, you're seated around a giant and well decorated table in the actual kitchen. It's a super cool vibe with nice music and intimate lighting. Each course is announced with a gong, and thoughtfully explained, including the connection to Chef Ling and how to best enjoy. I didn't come across anything I didn't love, but I'll highlight a few of my favorites. The fried taro with spicy crabmeat aioli ate like a delicious crab cake! The dry aged Peking duck was a stunner, coming in a smoke filled wooden box. One piece was meant to be eaten in fluffy bun, the other to be enjoyed more purely. There's also a smoked duck tongue which is tasty, just trust me! There's also filet mignon was rich and tender, laying in a delicious green sauce. Chef's kiss! Midway through the meal you are invited to introduce yourself briefly to the table. You also get to walk around enjoy some extra bites and visit with the chefs. It was a charming and diverse crowd. This review I dug up is from a while ago, things may have changed…read more January 2020 was my first time at Loro in South Austin. My companion and I went at 5 PM on a Thursday. There is a parking lot that was pretty full but not completely. Once inside, we took seats at the back bar where a buddy suggested we sit for faster service. We had menus and water within minutes, and our bartender was attentive the whole time. We ordered a mix of dishes that had been recommended and a couple more: Oak grilled Snap peas, Coconut scented Rice, Chicken Karaage, Tomato and Cucumber salad, Smoked Prime Bavette Plate, Smoked Beef brisket plate, and Chocolate mousse. For drinks we got Thai Berry smash and Mandarin Margarita. Overall, there was good flavor in all the dishes, with well-paired flavor combos, which is the standard Hai Hospitality sets. However, some dishes didn't have as bold flavor as I was hoping. The Chicken karaage could have been bolder. Surprisingly, the Tomato and Cucumber salad had more flavor than expected. The Prime Bavette and Smoked Brisket were great, though a bit pricy. Both of the drinks were excellent, but only got one each as we're not big on spending on alcohol with dinner. Normally I'd go to this type of place with high-end satiation expectations, such as at Uchiko, where actually filling up would cost a lot so I don't fill up and plan to eat a couple hours later. However, we were both full after eating the above, and even had a piece of brisket and some rice to take home. For the quality, the value is there. The service was great, the bartender checked on us multiple times, and gave us updates on what dishes were left to come out once we were about two-thirds through our order. Each time a dish came we got a refresher on what it was from the server, which I like. The place was about 1/3 full at 5 PM and 2/3 full when we left at 5:45 PM, with the volume-level rising. The speed and quality of the meal taken together is excellent-- we were in and out quickly and enjoyed our fine dining. The restaurant was a bit dark; I could read the menu fine, but one older gentleman had to use his phone to see the menu text. At the end of the meal, a small gift card helped lower the price so it was under 100 out the door. We ended up being very happy with the food and experience-- it was great, but it wasn't amazing solely because a couple dishes needed their good flavor to be bolder. No single item wasn't good, and a couple were exceptional, so I'd easily recommend this restaurant and would like to go back.

The curry sauce for the onion pancake was probably the most flavorful dish of the night sadly. The onion pancake was way way over fried-- hard as a rock. If that's their take on onion pancake... well, it's just wrong. The soup dumplings were passable but a bit doughie and the filling was full of a lot of noticeable coagulated fat -- not clear and broth-y, with light surface droplets of oil as all delicious broths. My wife enjoyed the chu shou -- I found the filling much too overcooked and tough -- difficult to eat with chop sticks. Like a tough, overcooked meatball. The fried shu Mae were just plain inedible. My wife and I each ate one and left the rest. The included sauce was basic and too heavy. And again, over fried. There was a huge delay between our apps and our mains, like 40 minutes or so. Various bar staff apologized. It wasn't a big deal, we were in a good conversation and they were super busy but our mains were not at all worth waiting for. Small portions. WAY over sauced. The orange beef was essentially just six or seven cubes of tough, fatty beef covered in over-the-top bitter orange peel. We each had a cube and left the rest. Honestly, give me Panda Express any day over this abject failure of a restaurant. Austin needs more Chinese but if it's anything like this place, forget it. I'd rather spend a 4h round trip to Houston and go to even a mediocre Chinese restaurant than endure another meal at this place. What a waste of $165. Edit: I wish I was making this up but I literally had to pull over to throw up on the side of the road on the way home. The food did not sit well with me. I have no underlying health conditions, am not on any medicine that would have this as a side effect and only shared one beer with my wife. It was just a very, very, disappointing and gross meal.
