On our way to Zionsville, IN, from Manhattan, Dominic, Tony, and I stopped at this friendly, cozy diner. The staff was warm and welcoming, our waitress delightful. We ordered birch beer on tap. It was the best we've ever had--brewed locally in nearby Pottstown. Entranced by the menu selection, we ordered a delectable liverwurst and onion sandwich, a scrumptious Reuben with flawless fry sauce, and the *BEST BURGER EVER*, Tina's Onion Ring Cheese Burger with Velveeta‼ The perfectly juicy, delectably tasty patty was covered with crunchy onion rings and the incomparable melt of Velveeta. Famous Wert's Fries with lump crab and cheese sauce are well worth their fame. And the tapioca pudding--we got it with whipped cream and cinnamon--was sublime. All the desserts are homemade! I've eaten here countless times. Phil is always so upbeat and welcoming! I was in this week for a burger on burger night. The burger was delicious! My issue with their burger night deal is this; their 'onion straws' are gross! When I asked his wife who happened to be our server if could substitute the 'straws' for chips at least, she said no. I know it may not sound like a big deal, but an enjoyable side would have made the burger taste better. read more

OMG! You can tell when a restaurant is family owned and run. The smiles are abundant, service is fabulous and the food is off the charts good. Truly, I haven't had a burger that good in many years. Homemade mustard, my husband was cleaning the little container with his finger. we live almost 2 hours away from here, and it's one of those places where you get a hankerin for carrot cake, or the homemade egg nog and you HAVE to go here. A group of 4 went last night for supper and had a very positive experience. All of the staff were polite and welcoming. Our server, Tina, was speedy, efficient, and courteous. The menu is delightfully old-fashioned, including birch beer, fried pickle chips, bologna sandwich, and other food you would have a hard time finding elsewhere. The onion rings are famous, a small mountain served in a basket. The Monday night special, any burger, a side order of onion rings, and a nice but not too big slice of chocolate cake with vanilla icing, at $15 cannot be beat. Highly recommend for value, great service, food choice, excellent staff and informal, homey atmosphere. No reservations are accepted, so either go after 7 P.M. or be prepared to wait in a row of comfortable chairs just inside the entry doors. read more

The food was good but not great. Placed an order to go and they forgot a burger. I called back and was put on hold for 4 minutes. Call back explained what happened and they would give me a refund and hung up. Called back a third time explained to one of the Wertz's what happened and he stated that they could not give me a refund until Monday ( 3 days later) and wanted me to call back. When I expressed my displeasure they hung up on me. So I blocked the purchase with my credit card company. Bottom line, check your order carefully and if you get home and discover an issue do not expect a resolution for their error. read more

Wert's Cheeseburger Review If you Google "Best burger in the Lehigh Valley", you'll notice Wert's Cafe towards the top of the search results, and on almost every best local burger list you can find. Wert's is also a perennial stalwart on Lehigh Valley Style Magazine's Best of The Valley list for "Best Juicy Burger". That's a lot of buzz around a single burger. Wert's Cafe opened in July of 1968, so they've been serving happy customers from their Allentown location for about a half-century. No wonder they have such a loyal following. I've lived in the Lehigh Valley for the majority of my life, so I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I had yet to discover Wert's until tonight. But, obviously, it would be sacrilege to write a burger blog without trying what is widely considered by many locals to be one of the best - if not THE best - burgers in the Lehigh Valley. So, here we go! Located at the intersection of 18th and Early Streets in Allentown, just a block from the fairgrounds and slightly off the beaten path, Wert's feels like a bit of a hidden gem when driving up to it. We arrived around 6:30 pm to a mostly full parking lot, which is to be expected for a Saturday dinner service. Walking in, you can tell you've just stepped into a quaint neighborhood joint filled with folks who are clearly all regulars. Mostly an older crowd, it's obvious these patrons have been coming here for decades, and this Saturday night dinner is just another happy visit amongst the hundreds of times they've already dined here. I can't help but feel a like a bit of an outsider at this point, realizing I've been missing something great for all of my life. The decor is noticeably dated, but in that charming, quaint, and homey kind of way. We are seated to our table in the busy dining room, adorned with paper placemats and laminated menus, so everything is feeling a lot like the good ol' local diners that I used to frequent back in the day. I ordered the Wert's Cheeseburger - one of the burgers they're known for - which is stuffed with mushrooms and onions and topped with Velveeta cheese. Clearly, there will be no frills with this burger. The burger arrives looking pretty much just as expected. Nice plump patty with melty, golden Velveeta cheese oozing out around the edges, sitting on a light kaiser bun. Yes, this is one very, very juicy burger, not to be confused with greasy. Achieving that amount of juiciness without the fatty greasiness is quite an achievement. Outside of the cheese, there are no toppings to speak of on this burger. Nothing to get in the way. This is all about the burger and it's onion and mushroom stuffing. The patty itself is well-seasoned, likely helped by those delicious onions inside. The mushrooms are clearly of the canned variety. This was disappointing to see, as I was expecting fresh, sautéed mushrooms from such a widely renowned burger. Overall, the flavor and texture is good, almost reminding me of a salisbury steak, with noticeable peppery, savory notes. The Velveeta cheese works well, as it provides that salty gooeyness that every good burger needs. The kaiser bun is un-toasted, soft, light and perfectly chewy. This burger doesn't need a pretentious brioche bun. On to the fries. At first sight, they look perfect. Golden in color with a nice, irregular hand-cut size. They don't seem to have any salt or seasoning, but that's usually not a huge issue for me, since you can always add as much salt as you like at the table. While the fries could've been much crispier in my humble opinion, they are reasonably adequate. Although not pertinent to the review, yet definitely worth mentioning, we also ordered the Wert's Special Fries. These are the same fries topped with cheese, lump crab meat, and Old Bay seasoning. Ate at work's Café for the first time yesterday March 3, 2021. Had the crab famous crab fries and the pretzel burger. The food was amazing it was so good my whole family enjoyed everything they had. Comfort food with a flair. I was craving a Reuben sandwich and gave Wert's a try because it was on their menu and they are open on Mondays, my day off. Plus, they had battered and fried pickles on their menu too! I ordered both and they were delicious. Sandwiches/burgers and battered/fried food is the main fare at Wert's. It's not super fancy, but they tend to put a creative twist on classic American diner/cafe food. For instance, the Reuben was served open-faced. This place had great food! I loved the appetizer fries with crab meat, and they had a great Reuben. My husband liked his burger. My only suggestion bus that if they are going to emphasize their burgers, possibly they could step out of the box and try some of the food truck combinations that are becoming famous. (Goat cheese burgers, fried egg, avocado, sweet and sour--maybe look up gourmet burgers in every and really set yourselves apart, etc). This is a phenomenal down-home local sports pub! It is cozy and very clean. The place is full of locals and everyone seems to know everyone else. However, the staff made me feel very welcome and took very good care of me. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a hockey game. The food was delicious and the portions were enormous!. My brother recommended this place to me as he had gone when he was younger and couldn't believe I had never been. He told me to order the onion rings as he said they were "like nothing I'd ever tasted before" and they're served in this big boat-like bowl. So I was very excited! When I arrived, I was a little less enthused. The dining area was very cramped and filled with an older crowd so it was hard to navigate through as there were coats and pocketbooks on the ground. It wasn't a huge deal, I just wasn't expecting it so I was surprised. I had ordered a light beer and the onion rings so I was excited to see what my brother had raved about. The waiter was prompt and the order came out quickly but the so-called "famous" onion rings were very disappointing. It basically looked like a tiny tumbleweed. The onion rings were very thin, stringy and extremely greasy. My boyfriend and I couldn't finish them so we decided to take them home. The bag was soaked through by the time we got back to the house. For dinner, I had just ordered a normal burger. It was good! Nothing exceptional but definitely tasty. Overall, this place didn't stand out for me like I wanted it to. Wert's is my favorite burger joint in the Valley!! I almost always order Phil's or Tina's burger and dessert. The desserts are just delicious. My favorite is the chocolate cake with white icing, although they have the same cake with peanut butter icing that is also pretty amazing if you love peanut butter (I'm not a big fan of PB). I drove 2 hours to meet a friend in Allentown and picked this place based on other reviews but when I arrived early I was informed by their rude male host that I could not be seated until my whole party (of one other person) was present. I asked why and explain the long drive I had taken but he said it was their policy. Being that there are literally dozens of other places to get a sandwich I asked if the policy was worth losing customers and his response was that they didn't need our patronage because they've been there for more than 50 years. Thanks, but I'm not impressed by how long other people have put up with your nasty attitude. I will go someplace friendly which I found less than a 5 min drive from them at a lovely establishment call Union & Finch. I was excited to go there for lunch with my daughter yesterday but was very disappointed. My daughter ordered a veggie burger and I ordered a turkey burger, we were both very disappointed with our burgers and chips. We found Wert's Cafe on Yelp while in Allentown several weeks ago. I ordered the Chesapeake Burger - a juicy burger topped with crab meat. A little salty, but Delicious! My wife had the Chicken Salad which was also fresh and delicious. Wert's is a family owned restaurant with a somewhat older clientele, but trust me, it's worth a visit and the food is delicious! We also ordered an apple dessert a la mode and enjoyed every bite. Service is fairly decent and locals are lined up in the waiting area to get in by the time we leave. My bet is that the coming rebirth of downtown Allentown will bring with it a host of "modern American" restaurants all claiming the rights to The Lehigh Valley's Best Burger. And--even though the amniotic fluid has still yet to rupture on the Phantom's new PPL Center--I'd double down that not one of those trendy spots will pack a burger patty one-third as well as they do at Wert's Café. Don't let the word "café" fool you. This place is a diner--and a damn good one. By my definition that means that 1) there's a turkey club on the menu 2) the desserts are homemade and 3) the waitresses that serve them to you do so with just the right amount of guff. It also just so happens that this diner serves an awesome burger. Now, a Wert's burger isn't your newfangled grass-fed, American Wagyu, USDA-Triple Prime patty that's topped with cave-aged gruyere, shaved black truffles, and house-made smoked ketchup. A Wert's burger is composed of your completely average ground beef blend, stuffed with mushrooms and onions, topped with a squirt of bottled red sugar (also known as ketchup) and a thick slab of "special cheese." Wert's "special cheese" really deserves a paragraph of description on its own. Almost highlighter-like in color, the oozing melted cheese seeps beneath the edges of the burger roll. The consistency is slightly tacky with the capability to cling to the roof of your mouth, much like the cheese of Old Forge style pizza. And the flavor? Imagine Velveeta, but saltier, with a kick of Cheddar's sharpness. Whatever lab engineered this stuff deserves a Nobel Prize in molecular gastronomy. I've seen people (sloppily) down bacon blue cheeseburgers here. My dad, in a strange break of character, once ordered the crab-cake-topped Chesapeake Burger. But, for me, it's always been the Wert's cheeseburger. It always will be. No other burger tastes like it. And that's exactly why it'll out-burger any burger you're going to find downtown: a Wert's burger is not trying to be anything it's not. All burgers come with the diner-staple chips and a pickle, but make sure you order a side of onion rings, which are actually onion strings, but don't ask questions, honey. Your server doesn't have time for all the questions. You want a lager, right? Or a birch beer? How about both? And you'd also better put in an order for the peach cobbler, if it's in season. There's a line out the door and its not getting any shorter. Not now. Not anytime soon. read more

Just as it's not cool to be racist or sexist, so it is not cool to be ageist... and if you blow off a restaurant because they have a more mature clientele, you could miss a great dining experience... like at Wert's. Seriously good food, served well and kindly, chocolate cake to die for, slammin' burgers and homemade soups, and if you like Reubens, here's your place. There's plenty of options beyond the sandwich and burger offerings as well. You will never leave hungry. The staff hustles and really tries to see to your satisfaction and comfort. Everything other reviewers state about the place being family run, with an extensive burger list, luscious onion strings, and cold birch beer on tap - true. You can drop by with one friend or a group, and they accommodate smoothly. They even got us - a group of maybe 15 - in quickly for a spur of the moment meal. If you're low carbing, you'll have to study the menu a bit, or do your burger or sandwich off the bread. The rye is good, so I throw away only half. I eat the onions too, just not a ton. Slobber when I see the desserts, but there's not many safe options, I think ice cream and/or Jello. My veg companion gets a grilled cheese or meatless Reuben, and ditches half the bread, tries to fill up with soup, and go easy with the onion strings. Getting a salad early buffers some of the desire to eat dangerously. And if you think you know Wert's because it (and you) have been around a long time, ask yourself if, as a kid, you ever went to Youst's... yeah, same building. read more

Wow!! Really fresh tasting HUGE burgers. I normally like strong seasoning on burgers but these are so good and so fresh and so REAL that you don't miss the seasoning. These are traditional grilled burgers, salt and pepper only. Yum!! We also got the special fries which are topped with crab and cheese. They were just ok but since I spend most of my summer in Delaware I think I am spoiled to beach crab. The service is super attentive and friendly! There was a lot about eating here that reminded me of going out to eat when I was a kid in the 1960's. The people in the next table were dead ringers for my great aunts thirty years ago.
