This place is an Allentown staple, and if you go early enough, you may run into your grandparents. (Or people who look just like them.) But don't let that deter us young people. The food here is down-home top-notch. I highly recommend the burgers and the club sandwich as your main meal, but this place shines with two things in my book: onion strings and birch beer. The onion strings are not to be missed. Great for sharing with the whole table, but they can be wholly devoured by two with ease. (What can I say, they're delicious.) And honestly, who can turn down a pile of thin, tangled, steaming fried onion-y goodness? The best thing about this place, though, is the birch beer. It's on draft. And frankly, that's awesome. Get it. Draft birch beer is a rare treat these days, and it's one that should not be missed. Crowds get long around peak dinner times, so you may have to wait. Unfortunately we were not lucky enough to have juicy burgers on our visit and Wert's didn't live up to our expectations. We also had some difficulty with our service also. my FAVORITE burger in the Valley. I got the Kathy Burger, it's like a Pattie Melt, but much better. Grilled with onions, it's on Rye toasted bread. Melted cheese. I subbed the meat with GARLIC Turkey ground meat. WOW. Great move. On top of this, I got sweet potato fries and WHITE Birch Beer. Brought me back!! The service was amazing. It had a local/family feel to it. I felt like I knew them forever. Smiled, and it was genuine. Next time I go I will venture away from the hamburger... at least I say that now. We hadn't been here in years so we thought we would give it a try. First, the place smells like a nursing home which coincides with the customer base. This place is also not familiar friendly at all. We have a toddler, who is not perfect but wasn't tearing the place down. Every time the bartender or staff walked by us they glared at us. The same with most the customers. I have never gotten so many dirty looks in my life. We got our food quickly and tried to hurry through our meal because it was evident we were not wanted there. The waitress came over and took the sugar packets away from my son because he was playing with them. I tried to explain to her that I would put them back before we left but she hurried away with them. My husband took my son outside because we could tell he was a bother to everyone. Their burgers are soooo good! The restaurant is not very big and there's not plenty of space in the parking lot. It gets jam packed quick and this is definitely a spot where the locals come. It gives me the old school feel with the decor, and the waitresses are friendly and joke around and everyone seems to know each other. I'm not sure if they take reservations but I can assure you no matter what day you go expect to wait anywhere from 5-45 minutes. It's worth the effort though. This place is a Allentown staple if you are a local. We have been eating here on and off for years. And it's always been consistent. Which is a great thing. We come here for the burgers. And never had a bad one. But tons of choices omfrom sandwiches to full platters. Everything i ever had there taster fresh, my wife gets the French onion soup and loves it. I choose the Manhattan clam chowder, my personal favorite. Along with our burgers it's a great dinner. The service is great as well. Sometimes things come out slow but it's well worth the wait. I heard rave reviews about this place from my coworkers for a few years now. I decided one night to visit this place. I'm glad I did. This establishment is truly a hidden jem. The atmosphere is calm and this is family run. The portions are BIG! I have yet to finish an entire meal. The waitress ' are super awesome and friendly. Completely disappointed this time around. I came here with my girlfriend for lunch two weeks ago and it was fine, ordered a Chesapeake burger, she ordered a Ground Sirloin, no problem. Today was much worse. I ordered the seafood bisque which was alright, definitely not as good as I remembered it from a few years ago... What really irked me was how the situation was handled when I ordered the Seafood Alfredo. I remember a few years back when I ordered it, it.was HUGE with 4 jumbo shrimp, 4 perfectly seared scallops, clams, mussels, crab and lobster meat. The sauce was rich, heavy and thick with tons of garlic and was completely out of this world. Flashback again to today, what I got was a small plate of watery Alfredo with extremely overcooked bits of lobster in it, needless to say I was super unhappy with it as it was not even remotely close to what I ordered a few years back. Unhappy, I politely summoned the waitress who was a total sweetheart and explained that it was quite alright that I was unhappy with the meal and offered me something else. What got to me more than anything was that the MANAGER/owner stared me down for a good 5-10 seconds, clearly acknowledging that I was the one who was unhappy that he ordered the most expensive dish on the menu and was utter crap, completely failed to acknowledge me and went to the back of the kitchen to i assume hide, because I didn't see him at all for the rest of the night. I also ordered a burger which took 25 minutes to come out, waitress said there was a "backup with the ticket system". Thisis time I asked for the burger to go as I was underwhelmed with the whole situation and just wanted to get out of there. Girlfriends Sirloin came out super rare but that was negligible as she enjoyed it. And to top.off all the terrible tackiness, they charged me for the salad I ate.. manager didn't say a word to me. As someone who worked in the food industry for over 15 years, I can surely say this is how you lose customers and definitely won't be back, ever again. This is more of an old style family bar, but really busy. Compared to everything except, perhaps really high end restaurants outside of Allentown, they have the best burgers. Add to that great soups, and homemade deserts and many other options as other reviews mention. You can understand why they are so busy. This is not a dive bar nor a modern hip bar. Just a comfortable family run restaurant/bar, with a few taps with perhaps a diner feel. Wert's, Ringers Roost, Wegman's Pub and the White Palm are all great places to go when you just want well prepared comfort food or just don't feel like a fancy place and want to relax. After reading some other reviews, I have to add that many of the deserts are like your grandmother made. Last nite, in an effort to get some peace and quiet (and to get out of the house), I went to Wert's Cafe here in Allentown. The food is good and the waitresses are GREAT. The rest of the visible staff is just so-so. I was seated at the table furtherest from the kitchen when raised voices coming from the kitchen could be heard. A few choice four letter words came thru clearly and the manager was telling an employee to "GET OUT" "OUT!" This went on for what seemed a long time. Everybody stopped and just stared at the kitchen entrance. The poor waitresses were clearly embarrassed. Then the offending manager came out and acted like nothing had been wrong - trying to schmooze up the patrons. I think I will take a break from that toxic place for a while. First visit - was hoping for more than a two star rating. Ordered Wert's famous crab cheese fries as an appetizers, they were a little stingy on the fries for the price. BF ordered a special burger - ordered it medium- it was brought out with no pink. I ordered the salmon, mashed potatoes and broccoli- salmon came out with the middle uncooked. I sent it back and it was brought out on the same plate it was brought out on originally and my mashed potatoes were cold by then. Plus cross contamination of undercooked and cooked food on the plate kinda grossed me out as there was juice on plate from the fish when it was undercooked. I ate some but couldn't finish because the thought just made me feel queasy. Had higher hopes for the place because of reading the reviews. Sorry but doubt we will be back. read more

Also, consider starting with the French onion soup for $3.25 a cup. Two things to consider for the main entree are the open-faced Reuben for $7.75 or the Wert's cheeseburger for $6.95. I am a little confused with the ratings this place has. I was pretty excited to try this place out but I was left very disappointed. The ambiance is more akin to a dive bar than a cafe, the service, friendly and quick. The portion sizes are huge and is more than satisfactory for the price range. However, it falls horrifyingly short of good taste. The much lauded onion rings, are thin, grated fried onions, very crispy and very greasy, but lacking seasoning and any flavor in general. Their burgers are decent and the meat is usually well cooked. The wings here are below average. Mediocre beer selection. In short, nothing to rave about and nothing that I would come back for. If I am craving good dive bar food, I'll drive across to Catasaqua and go to Catty's corner. read more

It was Monday, meaning Burger Night. I ordered the Chesapeake Burger which had lump crab on the creation and some cheese sauce. Sadly, the burger was raw and the crab meat was minimal. The beef patty looked beat to hell and the bun was soggy from that dreadful cheese sauce. $8.95...hardly a price I would pay for that. I figured it was raw since it came out five minutes after ordering. My girlfriend's California Cheeseburger was raw as well. I 86ed the Chesapeake style and went California. After the second attempt, it was cooked right. On a good note, the desserts were the stars. The Apple Crisp was amazing and her Coconut Cream cake was sublime.
