Living so close by my dad would drive over there on a Saturday morning and bring home a dozen. They'd still be warm. So by that note, these are the bagels to which I compare all others. They have every variety you can think of, plus some muffins and other goodies. They are so much better if you get them from this location as opposed to their satellite stores because they are straight from the bakery. Even the ones across town aren't quite the same. You can go in the morning and pick up a bunch or just one and they'll toast it and smear it with cream cheese, or you can go for lunch, and they'll make you a sandwich. I've been order from them for the last year and used to call the day before to avoid waiting on the line for pick up every time i used to come over and go to pick up area they will say your name and you can pick up and go. My last visit there I was waiting next to the pick up bar for around 10 minutes to get one of the workers attention as usual, none of them was looking towards my direction I was surprised and asked if I can pick up my order it's getting late and every minute important on Friday morning when u have a early meeting , The managers look at mean very rude face and told me I have to go over and wait on the regular line for the first time after I waste my time on the pick up bar. I like the concept of order but the service was always bad maybe because they sell a lot on the small amounts it's can be really frustrating. I'm not going back there.! read more

This place is the best! Not only is it open 24 hours but it has motivated me on days when I'm so tired, to wake up early. The smell of the freshly baked bagels is to die for! The thing about this place is that if you want to beat the breakfast line and get the warm, freshly baked bagels come between 6am-6:50am, after that the line gets pretty long. Upon stumbling Western Bagel, I wasn't really in the mood for bagels because I wanted some eggs and bacon or something different and sit down to relax. I'm not saying I settled for Western Bagel because I really wanted some breakfast food! And eating bagels in the morning is typically breakfast so, yeah. I came. :D I had to look for a restaurant around the 1-mile radius vicinity of Van Nuys - Amtrak since my bus was almost arriving. The location is on a relatively busy street located near tons of auto body shops. With the amount of reviews that it had, I guess I assumed that it would be in a nice looking plaza! But that's not what this review is about. The store is extremely clean and nice. It isn't your typical sit down restaurant since it is somewhat of a fast food restaurant--you order your food and GTFO. They had bagels, obviously... as well as chocolate chip danish, cinnamon rolls, muffins and some other morning sweets for those on the go! I ordered the onion bagel toasted with cream cheese while my boyfriend got the garlic bagel also toasted with cream cheese. I'm a croissant lover, so I got a chocolate chip danish AND a cinnamon roll (like the fatass I am!) AND hot chocolate. No regrets at all. Since we were on the go, we drove to the Amtrak station to sit there and eat. Western Bagel, you will give someone a heart attack with the amount of cream cheese you pounded on! I had no idea I would have that much cream cheese at all since previous shops that I've bought bagels at don't necessarily skimp, but they don't overdo it either. I'm definitely not angry that they caked on the cream cheese--I was just taken back by it is all! I love the effort. But... I did scrape off tons of it The toastiness, the crunchiness on the outside and the softness on the inside... Salivating!! OH! Western Bagel also stays true to their flavors, i.e. onion is onion, garlic is garlic, bagel is... bagel. Again, in comparison to other places, some skimp or are completely off on the flavor/tastes. I have no complaints at all about their bagels... In regards to their cinnamon bun, Buddha have mercy. I guess it's very amateur of me to compare this to Cinnabon... but OMB. That stuff is heavenly! Extremely creamy thick layer of cinnamon and ughhh, the overdose on that white icing?! I didn't even heat it up. I can't imagine how yumm-ER that thing would have been if I had. Their chocolate chip danish was a bit more expensive than the cinnamon bun and I wasn't sure why... until I bit it two hours after purchasing it! It has chocolate chips on the outside of the danish but on the inside, there's even MORE chocolate inbetween the layers of the danish! I freaking love anything chocolate covered ;D It was, again, creamy chocolate (unheated) and so soft with each bite. I don't think this is a croissant but I love anything of the texture filled with some chocolate! Worth every penny. Western Bagel's really is awesome. Hot chocolate, like every gas station, donut shop and whatever other restaurant sells hot chocolate... doubled on the chocolate so that your drink is that much more chocolatier and yummier! EEEK! Lastly, customer service--such nice ladies serving everyone that walks through the door! They want to make sure that everyone is helped, even if couples are standing near one another and want to make sure that the other spouse had their order taken. I don't know if Western Bagel is a franchise or not but I really, really, really wish they had one in NorCal. Western Bagel will be a "MUST" when I come back down to Van Nuys! read more

My coworker and I were craving bagels & since we work the graveyard shift we were looking for a spot that would be open at 2:45am. First thing I noticed about this place it was not in the best of areas but that's not a big deal to me. I love that the parking was easily accessible but I do think it might be a tight fit during the daytime. Once I went inside I noticed it was very clean & organized! All their bagels were in cute little baskets with a large label so you know exactly what you're getting. The staff were so polite and friendly which was refreshing since it was pretty late. I got a Cinnamon Crunch bagel toasted with cream cheese. I like how they offer you the option of whether to toast your bagel or if you'd like cream cheese. I paid $2.95 for my bagel which I thought was a bit much until I actually took a bite of it. The bagel was toasted to perfection it wasn't burnt or over toasted where it turned out hard as a rock. They were very generous with the cream cream which I loved! The bagel itself was good it wasn't overly sweet it had the right amount of cinnamon. All in all I would recommend this place to anyone because they have a wide selection of options & the quality is worth the price. read more

I love coming here really late at night and buying bagels when I know they're made fresh. They've got an excellent selection of flavored cream cheeses and lox. On certain holidays they'll have themed bagels like green ones in March etc. The staff is very prompt but friendly, it's a bagel factory, what do you expect? Love this place. They have every single bagel you can think of and then some. They are always very liberal with the cream cheese which I love. Only thing that sucks is they do not take credit cards. Cash and check only. They have an ATM but it is one of those generic ATMs that charges like $4 to get cash out. There are no tables and chairs, so you can't really enjoy your bagel right away unless it is in the car on the way back home. Been coming to this place for the last 20 years since I was kid and man do I love going back. This place is open 24/7 365 bagels always on deck and their service is always great the staff is friendly and attentive. Usually when I come here I get a dozen bagels and pastrami bagel sandwich. The bagels here good just make sure you eat them that day or the next because if you wait too long they get hard because they got non preservatives. That's why they taste a hundred times better when you buy them there instead of the market. As far as the sandwiches they are great full of meat little lettuce an a lot of taste. You must try the turkey sandwich the turkey is full of succulent meat. As for me I will definitely becoming back once a month to come get my sandwiches and pizza bagels. Recently stopped by to get my fave bagels and lox (which was our Friday office breakfast treats from this vendor); plus I frequent this location whenever I'm in the area for business or to get something for my car. I walked in to find an empty shop with absolutely no customers in line, and about three workers cleaning and going about their business. Not one of the three acknowledged that I was there while I perused the menu for any additional drinks to go with my meal...ready to order....still no acknowledgement. So.....I decided instead of getting angry, I just walked out the door, jumped in my car and went to get an excellent Argentinian lunch. I love good food, but bad service leaves a horrible taste in my mouth, and I'll never spend money here again. When I had to come in to get fillings done, she recommend I eat something beforehand. Since I was running late, this was the place to go to. Getting something sugary and sweet before getting cavity work done seems counterintuitive to most... but not to me. Everywhere I've lived in California, I've been aware of where the nearest Western is. It's been a part of my life forever, and if I ever have to move, proximity to Western is high on the priority list (right below "proximity to TJ's".) You really can't beat the bagels. Give me an Everything from Western over Noah's any day, particularly if it's warm and slathered with reduced-fat cream cheese. Absolutely unbeatable. I used to hit up the one in Burbank, but I got tired of making it part of my weekend errand rotation since it's about a 15-minute drive from me. After that, I started going to the one in Granada Hills on the way home from work because it was tangentially "on the way home" ie close to the 118 freeway. But I got sick of that also, because I couldn't always make it before closing time at 6 and if I did, they were sometimes out of my favorite bagels. What's the point of showing up to a bagel store if you might not get what you want? At the Van Nuys location, bagels are always fresh and plentiful, and since it's open 24-7 you can literally show up any time you feel the urge for bagels. Also, Western has the punch-card thing every time you buy a dozen, and they have various coupons for people who are friends with them on Facebook/Twitter. As good as the information is on Yelp...as reliable as the ratings provided by Yelpers are...Western Bagel is proof that a great deal depends on experience and personal taste. Kind of like the phrase that follows the EPA mileage ratings on cars: "Your mileage may differ." So your opinion on these bagels may differ. I had read the previous Yelper comments (and the article in the LA Times), and had my hopes up that maybe Western Bagel offered the great bagel I've been seeking since I moved to LA. Something along the lines of SF's legendary House of Bagels... I tried the three kinds by which I rate all bagel producers: cinnamon raisin, sesame and plain. And they're good - certainly superior to any of the "round bread with a hole in it" bagels you find most places, but not 5-star great. You have to love the nice, crusty/crunchy outside, but the inside doesn't live up to the first bite. These bagels lack the tooth-sticking, doughy texture of a truly great bagel, so there's no real substance to them. On the other hand, they don't skimp on sesame seeds or raisins, and the flavor of the bagels is good. I was also waited on promptly by a smiling young lady who made sure she had my order correct, and who said "Thank you" and seemed to mean it. I'm certainly not going to throw out the rest of the half-dozen I bought, and I'd stop in again if I happened to be passing by. But I don't think Western Bagel's worth a special trip. read more

I've seen this place a million times driving down Sepulveda and I figured since your at the homebase of the company that the bagels would be great. So on a whim, I stopped and purchased a few bagels. First of all, bring Cash. They don't accept credit cards and they have an ATM machine but you'll get charged $2.50 to use it. Second, I'm not sure if I'm just used to the super plump bagels, but these seem to be on the smaller side. They are definitely not even as big as the 'Sara Lee' brand in the grocery store. However, they are good. I especially enjoyed the jalapeno bagel that had bits of jalapeno baked into the bread. It gave a nice kick.
