I think by this point the Westside is kind of review-proof. It's not only a local institution, but it's famously so. I actually drove past it when I first was scouting the area and have wanted to try it ever since, only later learning of its heritage. The drive thru was slow, they have a big menu so you'll have to keep calm. I ordered the butterscotch shake with marshmallow, the cheesesteak, potato gems, and a half rack of ribs to have later. I ate potato gems on the way home (tater tots -- I guess in Idaho, people respect Ore-Ida's trademark), so when i finally managed to fold the enormous cheesesteak into something resembling a sandwich, i ate like four bites and was full. I like their enthusiasm and it tasted good, but it was hard to eat as a sandwich. The potato gems could have used another cup of the obligatory fry sauce, by the way. Ask for extra. While i was suffering through my food coma, my cat stuck her head inside the cheese sauce cup from the sandwich then passed out on the windowsill from her own food coma. Hours later, I heated up the ribs in the oven. Normally, I prefer beef to pork ribs, but these were perfectly cooked. The meat was falling apart and just the right texture. The rub could be more flavorful, though, and the barbecue sauce was too little and probably from a bottle. Next time I will just have a favorite on hand instead. Happy I finally made it. The dip for the French dip sandwich was soy sauce. Awful! The loaded baked potatos didn't come with butter and was dry. Basically had bacon bits to hide the dry potato. The meatloaf sandwich had a special sauce and all you could taste was tarragon. It was piled with a quarter head of ice berg lettuce. read more

I have been meaning to post this review for ever, I mean, I eat here on the regular and probably would not have made it through The pandemic without this place. Oof so many good items to choose from, But if I were to measure what I got most often I would say that it is the Buffalo fries. For burgers I am partial to the Buffalo bleu chicken sandwich. The corn dog is a winner. Solid corn dog eaten with mustard. We also ordered the strawberry thick shake that was maybe more medium thicc. Side salad was needed for my conscience. We truly came here for the finger steaks. Ordered it with the tots. It was like thin strips of well done beef. Tried it dipped with the different sauces: Cocktail sauce, ketchup, fry sauce, and ranch. It was better with the cocktail or fry sauce (in that order). Majority of what we ordered was fried but it was not greasy, which I appreciate. The taste was good and comparable to other diner genre of food. Alright. I just moved to a house in the North End, and I can tell I am gonna be at the Westside Drive-in a LOT! :) It is so cute and fun. The menu is extensive! Give yourself some time to really look over all the options. (AND soda options, AND milkshake options!) Apparently they even have an Ice Cream potato that is a pretty big deal - tho I stuck with the Cotton Candy Milkshake. I ordered a cheeseburger meal (fries and drink). The burgers are HUGE. full of lettuce, tomatoes, onions and all the right goodies. The fries are great, and so is the fry sauce they provided. We took our lunch to the little extra seating area on 21st so that we weren't stuck between all the cars in the drive thru. It was quieter over there and really nice. I can't wait to come back and bring my little dudes. They are going to love it! Def. stop by - but beware the drive thru is usually BUSYYYY! Thats a good sign in my book! Enjoy!!! read more

Our food was so tasty! The fries and tater tots both stayed fresh on our drive home from Boise all the way into Nampa in slow freeway traffic. I got finger steaks and my girlfriend got an impossible burger. The finger steaks were really high quality and I would definitely get these again! I'm excited to try everything else on the menu and boy is there a lot. The window being on the opposite side is definitely one to remember. The guy at the window had great customer service. We paid about 34 dollars for a big thing of finger steaks and tots with sauce, the impossible burger and a large fry. I am one of the many that came here based on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. Hubby had seen the show several years ago and had longed to come here ever since. I know that many come for the Prime Rib, but hubby wasn't interested in that. Therefore, we came for the novelty of it all and to find out what all the hubbub was about. We had a hard time deciding due to the large menu, but at least most of what on the menu looked amazing. I went for the Bacon BBQ Cheeseburger, hubby had the chicken sandwich. I thought my burger was well made, very messy but bun was soft. Flavors mixed well and meat patty was so juicy that the bun became saturated and broke apart. I almost needed a fork and knife to finish it off about halfway through. Hubby hated his chicken sandwich patty...he said that it was obviously fresh but woefully under seasoned. I have to say it was pretty disheartening to watch him madly sprinkle salt on his patty to get some flavor. After all these years he's waited... *sigh* Sitting outside on a warm day wasn't that unpleasant, yet the flowers bring a lot of bees and flies which makes eating outside a practice in bug swatting, eating and sitting still for the bee to pass. Not to mention during the early afternoon, there isn't much shade despite the umbrellas, so you will spend some time umbrella angling to get a shady spot. I really wanted to fall in love with the Westside Drive-In, especially after seeing it on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives! And it was good, but not great. My favorite item were the potato gems. Absolutely delicious! With the fry sauce, especially. The disappointments for me were the Cuban sandwich and chili, which I really wanted to love. For me, a solid Cuban sandwich contains some type of roasted pork, alongside ham, Swiss, mustard and pickles. This spot uses some type of pork cold cut, which makes this taste like a very glorified ham sandwich. The chili was very lukewarm. I respect this institution for what it is, and how it serves the community. I will absolutely give it another shot and update my review as need be. read more

Disappointing! French dip had 2 very thin pieces of what looks like deli counter roast beef. Ordered large size- drinks looked like smalls. The "large" fries looked like Happy Meal size. Even with Boise pounded by nearly eight inches of snow in two days -- an all-time record in November -- the Westside Drive-In hardly missed a beat. Customers were still pouring in over the weekend. I came in for an order of finger steaks. With the outside temperature at about 10 degrees, steam from the finger steaks and Tater Gems rose in the car. The finger steaks, an Idaho original, were tasty as ever. The Gems, the J.R. Simplot version of that other potato product from Ore-Ida, were also good. The dinner combination also includes a large chunk of Texas toast. Containers of cocktail sauce and fry sauce rounded out the condiments, plus a Westside fortune cookie. read more

Yes, it's a drive in! Family member in town had heard of it. .so off we went. Just happened to beat the rush getting here on Prime Rib night about 6:20ish-nice! Ordered the Guacamole Burger, peanut butter shake, Mr ordered the Dadio, brother ordered grilled cheese & corn dog. Husband loved his burger, the messy layers that he finished eating with a fork. Brother & I split the burger. Neither of us cared for the very thick layer of cold & crisp shredded lettuce which made it very "slippery" so once that was pared down ok. Liked the buns with a dusting of cornmeal letting you know this isn't just store bought bums. Seasoned fries & tots were perfectly crisp and liked the fry sauce too. Peanut butter shake was thick but not really peanut butter-y (yes, a high tech term there). Was hoping they'd read previous review! The 21st Street patio is a nice addition (don't think it was here the last time!) & provided much needed evening shade. Yes, it's a diner but on the upper end of diner food! I was told by some locals that the ice cream potato sundae is must-try. Funny enough, I had just read the same thing from a Buzzfeed article and had already planned to check it out. The place itself is very stylized into a 50s diner. It was a little hard to find where to order as there were a couple intercoms in the drive thru. The menu is really big so definitely take a look before you visit so you're not holding up the line. The sundae itself was really cool...the cocoa powder really does make it look like a potato! It also tasted great, with Oreo crumbles and fudge sauce. I recommend sharing this with 1-2 people as it is quite a large portion. Overall, a great value for a novelty treat! read more
