Stopped in on our way back from apple picking in VT looking for something more local than KFC, etc. and found this place while heading south on Rte 5. Our server and was very helpful and friendly. We had the Philly cheesesteak omelet and, for lack of a better term, an egg McWaffle special. OMG the sandwich was what I've been look. Sugared waffle, over easy egg, maple syrup, cheese, and sausage patties. I'm hooked. I kinda regret sharing it. Oh yeah, the omelette was very good too. Will come back. read more

We came here for lunch today and the food was great! We sat at the bar area of the diner however and got a perfect view of the kitchen. This is we probably the grossest / most disgusting kitchen I've seen. (Being in the restaurant field/ industry in the past I've seen a lot cleaner.) The trash was over flowing and could see gloves, empty boxes, egg shells all overflowing from the trash and onto the floor. Also a huge downfall was hearing/ seeing the chef back there swearing and cussing every other word. Hickey's visible on her neck and not wearing cloves or a hair net either. I have been to this diner several times. I have ordered breakfast and lunch and it was very good. Obviously not dining---but the omelette was made just right and the tuna melt was great! Service has always been very friendly and fast. I will back. read more

I had fond memories of coming here as a kid, but today the Whately Diner's poor service nearly ruined Christmas. We were willing to let a long black hair on the table slide without mention, but our waitress continually made us feel unwelcome. Being completely inflexible in the ordering process, slamming our drinks around, muttering under her breath, taking extra time to bring our order--it was all too much. We left money on the table and walked out before most of it came, only to have our waitress chase us out the door and try to guilt us into coming back in. Needless to say, we didn't. We stopped to get a bite. Food was good but the service was by far the worst we have ever had. The two young laidies serving spent more time eating their own food than waiting on the customers abd behind the counter no less. We and the table behind is had to ask for silverware after our food was served, then server never came back until she threw the bill on the table. I have spent most of my life working in restaurants and these gals would not last a day working for me. Its a great little diner. Just get some competant help. read more

Used to be a place where we really liked to eat. Went last night with my family. Waitress #1 who took our orders didn't write the orders down and got it wrong. Waitress #2 brought us our meals, and I informed her I ordered onion rings instead of fries. She said she would fix it and bring us onion rings. Ate my entire sub and still no onion rings, waited longer we were both done no onion rings. Waitress #1 comes back saying sorry about the onion rings and I told her the other waitress said she was correcting the order and brining them and waitress #1 grinned asked if we wanted anything else? I said no, just my correct order of onion rings. Did I get them? No, she brought the check for the full price of both our meals. Plus she wasn't humble about it; she acted like it was a joke with a big smile. As we got up I asked waitress #2 where our onion rings were as she saw us get up and she was still socializing with the male cook in the dining area where they both stood for most of our meal. There were only a couple of others sitting at tables who were already served (around 10 pm) so they weren't very busy. Then waitress #1 said, "I hope your night gets better" with another grin at the register. So I tell her it would if you got my order right and then actually cared to ensure it got fixed like the other waitress said it would. Who is the manager? In the evenings it's waitress #2. (I didn't even mention the quesadillas the other person in my party's ordered were terrible, the cheese was bland cheese and there were only two or three small pieces of chicken in the whole thing. Again we asked how they come when we ordered it and she said any way you order it. We wouldn't have ordered that either if we knew what poor quality they were. The cheese was even missing in large sections of it. Needless to say from one night's service or lack of it, it went from being a favorite restaurant to not even being on the list anymore. So sad two waitresses and a cook can in an hour have that effect by the lack of quality and service they provide. Recommendations to the head manager and owner, retrain, prove continuously training in areas that are lacking, come in and order the food and taste test the items that don't get high ratings and improve the quality of service. Use mystery shoppers to see what quality of food and service people are receiving from shift to shift. Hire staff who are professional, detailed oriented, write things down, follow up and provide great customer service and keep trying until they get the order right. Require waitresses stop by a few minutes after the meal is served and ask how everything it. Then care enough to make corrections immediately and don't forget to follow through on that because that sends the message the the patron and the service the receive isn't important. Tonight was a classic example of what shouldn't have happened. By simply displaying the proper attitude, correcting my order right away, following up to ensure it was done and everything was fine, they would have stayed on my "places to visit list." But by not doing these things, had to provide feedback somewhere -thus on this very disappointed review. read more

i think some previous reviewers were just too harsh on this un-gimmicky diner. yes, they have slow wi-fi. no, they don't feature exquisitely fresh, healthy or inventive cuisine. instead, pleasant and patient waitstaff serve some good french fries, cream pies, and standard diner fare to a wide range of patrons 24/7. it is what it is! read more

Horrible, horrible, horrible service! First time... and last time. I enjoy diners and thought this would be a fun experience for me and my 3 kids on the way to Yankee Candle. Arrived at 12 noon (today after church) a Sunday, it was full and the hostess informed us there was a 2 other groups in front of us waiting for a booth. There was seats at the counter but she didn't offer them to us...hind sight I should have taken that as an "Omen" to turn and leave, they didn't want our business. My 13 year old daughter noticed the seats at the counter and asked if we could sit there. The Hostess said "if you want". So we proceeded too, not sure how my 2.5 year old son was going to handle the stools but he climbed up and enjoyed swiveling on them. Glad he was entertained, because he entertained us as well. We sat at a dirty counter for nearly 10 minutes before the teenage girl with dark hair came over to wipe it down, as it took a lot of our loud laughter from my son entertaining us with his antics on the stools for the first time to get her attention off of her boy friend who was sitting two stools over from us. We asked fro menus, like what a concept. She didn't bring them to us, after another few minutes i had to track down the hostess to ask for menus. She looked at me as if we we were aliens. I also noticed two to three booths were emptying out and as they guess were leaving, there were new patrons walking gin the door and just taking the booths?!?!? I thought there were others waiting for the booths, had I known you could just grab them I would have got my family up from the counter and grabbed a booth, especially because where we were sitting it was very cold. Yes, it was 20 degrees out today, first cold snap but it shouldn't be cold in the diner, you'd think but we sat to the left side of the counter when one enters from the front door, but there is an inconspicuous side door to the left, that others (regulars) just came strolling in, allowing in a blast of freeing cold air. What a horrible set-up. Finally We got to order, The food came out quickly but it was below average even for diner food. We didn't order anything extravagant. Grilled cheese, onion soup, chocolate chip pancake with side of bacon, burger, coffee milk shake, and liver & onions with mashed potatoes and gravy. It all tasted like elementary school cafeteria food,,,,at best. So did I mention the teenagers friend arrived after we ordered, yeah so between her boy friend and her friend getting all of her attention, service got even worse. I really don't have time to get into it, and you can only imagine that I am taking time away from my three kids to write this review, when I have much better things to do with less than 2 weeks left to Christmas, but the experience was o bad, I had to make it public. So to add to it, I noticed the name badges had "F.L. Roberts", so I asked if they were part of that organization, which I am a loyal rewards member for this gas stations and car washes. When I was informed they were affiliated with that organization I thought it was great for the rewards points but thought it was odd and stretch for a locally reputable service station business to take the leap into the hospitality business. Once I finally received the check, I proceeded to the register at the hostess station. I provided her my FL Roberts rewards number and my credit card, She looked at the check and said since it was for the counter, it needed to be rung up over at another register behind the counter. She informed my server of that who was now entering in some orders. Eventually she got to my check, processed it asked for my credit card and provided me my skip. I tell you all of this because I signed it, got the kids in the car and left. When I got to Yankee candle it dawned on me that i didn't get my rewards points for the transaction because the hostess did not convey that to the waitress, and I confirmed from looking at my receipt. No mention of my rewards account or points. Oh well! In summary, this place is a joke. Everything about it gave the sense it was their first rodeo. Avoid it at all costs, especially if you have a family. Leave it for truckers. I've never disliked a place so much that I had to write a review, so this is a first. It's a 24 hour diner so I'd hate to see what it's like at a normal time, but my girlfriend and I stopped here at around 1 in the morning and didn't see anyone seating people so we took our own seat. The guy running around waiting on people was a huge dick right off the bat. We ordered what we thought would be simple classic dishes that are usually good, chicken tenders and a turkey wrap. (Waiter didn't ask us about drinks, we asked for waters when we ordered food). The tenders were those frozen out of the box 100% fake ass bars that were fried to a black crisp and some standard but bland and cold fries. How do you fuck that up? Like okay you guys don't care about chicken tenders, at least fry them nicely. I couldn't even finish. My girlfriends wrap was half bread and served with stale chips. The guy brought a plate of fries out later to go with the wrap? Not sure what was going in the kitchen but I saw a guy kinda bumbling around outside and in the dining area then going into the kitchen and bumbling around there. We went to pay and the guy legit gave me attitude because I had to use my card. Huffed off to the back to run it and came back to slap it down with the receipt on the counter in front of me without a word. We should've saved our 15 bucks for a Burger King or something. Five stars for being exactly what it is -- an all-night diner and truck stop. I had eggs over easy, perfectly cooked, and potatoes extra crispy. The waiter knew most of his customers by name. This is clearly a place for reliably decent food, in a convenient location. read more

The food was very delicious but the look of the place was very gross. Everything was dirty, the bathroom looked as it hadn't been cleaned in days, and the kitchen looked awful. One of the cooks wasn't even wearing gloves & i watched her wipe her nose then continue to touch the food. An older lady ended up passing out on the floor and none of the staff went to see what was wrong, a customer had to call 911. they were very unorganized. I am from out of town, (2 hours away) and needless to say probably won't be back to due to unclean conditions. read more

Open 24 hours, greasy food, interesting characters. The Whately is the place to go if you're hungry and it's late - *real* late.

My favorite diner! When I first came here a few years ago, I must admit I was skeptical. It's a truck stop and is casual to the max.... But I quickly realized their food is really good! I always get the french onion soup. I also recommend the big ben burger which is a burger with a fried egg on top in between English muffins. The eggs benedict is also good, with a delicious hollandaise sauce, though sometimes they poach the eggs for too long. My boyfriend is a big fan of the biscuits and gravy. read more

Writing from my table, watching one server eating food while behind the counter with her fingers, so gross. A line cook sitting at the bar with his shoes untied his hair unkept and his chef pants filthy as if they haven't been washed in months, and 8 employees hanging out while the lonely 3 tables have to flag down servers for coffee and checks. Food was DISGUSTING. I over hear the server ask the line cook when she picks up our plates from the window asking "did you fix the hollandaise?" He replies "yes". Then when she drops it at our tables it's chunky and the most awful shade of yellow so I immediately ask our server why it's chunky and her answer is it's homemade. Sorry but I've been a chef for 16 years and run an award winning brunch restaurant and make hollandaise 363 days a year never once in my life has hollandaise been chunky. It's only chunky if you over temp it and scramble the eggs and then continue to use the same batch which is the EASIEST way to get people violently sick. Leaving now as the waitress is sweeping under our feet. Impossible to have bad diner food of service yet these guys managed. Disgusting. read more

I have been here twice so far and I do plan on coming again. This place is a relatively normal and typical truck stop diner. The food is cheap, modest and good and the service is fair. They run 24 hours a day which is great because should my friends and I get hungry at 3 AM, while most places are closed, we can always count on this place being open. The place does look like it could be cleaned up a bit more, but that does not mean it looks grimy or unclean in the slightest. All in all, 4 stars because the service is good, they split up checks when requested (and don't complain), they check in while food is served, the food is cook well and service is nice. Only down side is that food can sometimes take a while to come out (which i expect, even if there are only a couple people in the restraunt) and that it could use a little more cleaning. It would only take a couple more times coming to raise this to 5 stars the way they are going. read more

I wanted this to be a good experience because it's such a cool, old school kind of place. The breakfast was just barely ok, pancake burned and served burned side down, of course. But the women's room was one of the filthiest I have ever been in, and I assume folks who care so little about cleanliness don't do any better in the kitchen, so I will not go back. read more

We've eaten at our fair share of diners all over the country and nothing compares to this...filthy place!! There were no booths when we walked in so we sat at the counter which had not been cleaned from the previous person. The waitress came and took our order, never wiping off the counter and not even putting place mats down for us. She just set our clean silverware on top of the dirty counter. Had to wait a long time for our food and it was not worth the wait. The three waitresses that were working behind the counter all ate out of a communal basket of french fries and then took time out to deliver people's meals to them. This place was dirty, dirty, dirty! I believe the Board Of Health should be made aware of this place. On top of all this, I didn't think the prices were that great for a diner. $30 bucks for 3 breakfasts? read more

What happened to this diner? It appears that ownership of it has been transferred to the FL Roberts gas company, that owns the pumps near the diner. It isn't officially "The Fillin Station" any longer (although there are still signs out front with that name). But my big disappointment is the fried chicken. I have a thing with fried chicken and diners, and that's pretty much all I ever order when I go to a diner. And previously I felt that the fried chicken at this diner has been among the best. Very big portions (almost too big) and extremely fresh, juicy chicken under an old-fashioned style fried crust. NO MORE! Now when you order fried chicken, all you get are chicken legs, five of them. I noticed this on the menu, and thought that was an odd change, but went for it anyway because I like chicken legs. When I got it I realized how much had changed. These were chicken legs designed to fit a corporate owned restautant supply company's standardization procedure. All of them about the exact same size and shape (from midget chickens). But worse the meat was extremely dry, and oddly tasteless. I could barely taste a chicken taste out of these. The fried coating looked like fried coating but not like it used to be here. This was so uniform and even (and tasteless) that it had to be from some sort of pre-packaged thing. ("Yeah, we need another case of the pre-fried chicken legs here in Whatley".) And even worse, by the 3rd or 4th leg I realized I was not eating fresh, as I could taste the telltale sign of chicken just about going bad. The fries were just fries. Nothing bad but nothing good. The slaw was okay. Portions smaller than before. This used to be such a deal. Wonderful fried chicken with embarassingly huge side portions for 6.99 to 7.99. Now it's 9.99 for this stuff. My friend ordered a vegetable omelette and enjoyed it, suggesting there's not much that a corporate sponsored/supplied restaurant can do to ruin that. Someone else will have to report whether anything else has been ruined. I might go back again, but the diner has been ruined in my eyes. read more
