Truffle mushroom pizza
Hristos K.

My wife was visiting a friend near by and my brother in law recommended we go here for pizza. Well it was a good recommendation for many reasons. First one was that there is plenty of parking. And plenty of outdoor seating for when the weather allows that. When we first got in the hostess told me it would be about 10 minutes, but we were welcome to sit and look at the menu till they called us for the table. It was only a 5 minute wait and at first I was surprised we couldn't just be served at the large high table at the entrance where we were seated and waiting which looked like it was for several parties or even one large party, but even when we were leaving that table was empty so I guess they either save it for a very large party or just for people to sit at while they wait for their table like we did. Either way we didn't wait long so that didn't bother me as I thought it might at first. When we were seated, service was extremely fast, so fast that at first I thought they just want us out. :p but they are just that good. And our waitress brought me my soda without ice which many servers forget and would get me a refill before I was even done with the soda and even asked if we wanted water as soon as we sat and bright us some. When the food arrived (which as I mentioned was extremely fast even though the place was packed), everything was amazing. We started with shrimp and the Brie which were in the specials. Shrimp was fresh and you could really tell, and the Brie had a nice assortment of apple slices, almond slices, bread and cranberries making it feel like you were also having a healthy meal with your pizza and fried food :p. We had the truffle mushroom pizza and the only complaint my mother had was that it had onions and rocket which she didn't like on the pizza, but that was her fault for not reading it on the menu as we could have easily just asked for it not to have that. She just saw truffle, mushrooms and ricotta cheese and said im having that. Which was what I wanted too but I was ok with everything else too. Well we both enjoyed it and I even took the left over pizza to have for dinner later :). I don't live nearby, but it is a place I would recommend to others who go by there and when we come near here again I know where to go eat if I'm in the mood for pizza. The only complaint is that it was too loud for us, almost felt like a sports bar without the sports tvs playing everywhere, however they do have take out as well, so you do have that option too if you live nearby.

Date and soppresatta pizza

Had a great experience here on a whim! Service was prompt and friendly. Had a great selection of beers! The date and soppresatta pizza was absolutely delish. It had hot honey on top which really helped to elevate the sweetness of the dates. Highly recommend trying their pizza, as it was delicious! My only complaint was the wings we ordered were very small and very pricy. Not worth it.

Every trip to Maine includes When Pigs Fly. The pizza is amazing and there is no question why it is always packed. There is not a bad pizza on the menu.

My wife and I were looking for a spot to eat at along Route 1 as we were heading north back towards home and this was our choice. Technically we came here a little off five years ago during the middle of you know what was happening in 2020. I had forgotten to do a review back then so with revisiting I can now do a review. I will lastly mention during our 2020 visit we split a pizza and enjoyed it. This visit we opted for things other than pizza so don't worry for those not interested in pizza, they have lots of options still. Drink wise they have everything you'd expect for soda, tea, lemonade, etc then beer wise they had around 20 on draft with some cans too. As well as plenty of wines and cocktails for fans of those too. Then food wise they have you guessed it pizza with roughly 15 styles they chose with plenty of toppings for you to make your own if wanted. Price wise I will say the majority of pizzas were priced $24-$26 which I thought was a little pricey but expected for a tourist heavy spot on Route 1. Otherwise food wise you could pick from apps; wings, tenders, hummus, etc. Meals such as Mac n Cheese, Tacos (fish, brisket), salads, and lots of sandwiches and burgers. Along with all their usual menu offerings you should get a page with the current specials too. This is where my wife and I grabbed the fried mozzarella for starting app which were delicious. Great taste with a perfect cheese pull! Then entree wise my wife got their Turkey BLT and I got their Meatball Grilled cheese. I recommend trying a sandwich if you don't choose pizza especially if you haven't tried their delicious bread. My sandwich used their soft sourdough and my wife's used their savory cranberry bread. We both were extremely happy with our food. Grab some of their bread in the next door company store before or after your meal, which I also reviewed that. Service was very good. The hostess was friendly and our wait for our table was less than estimated and they text you when it is ready. Food wise the app came out in no time and shortly after starting in on that our sandwiches showed up. No complaints at all service wise. Ambiance wise it feels like a restaurant with some rustic feels to it. It was closed already but if you come here in the summer the highlight would definitely be sitting outside enjoying the nice weather. Definitely a tourist spot but one that my wife and I do enjoy as locals.

If you want a really great pizza not from a pizza chain and you're anywhere near Kittery, Maine, please consider When Pigs Fly Pizzeria. It's so much more than a really great pizza place and their kids menu is a bonus if your party includes little ones. If you love artisan breads, check out their Company Store adjacent to the restaurant. Today we enjoyed their pizza and took 3 loaves of bread to go.

Fried Mozzarella Wedges

Another amazing trip to When Pigs Fly! We stopped in and found out there was about a 20 minute wait which was no problem for us. Great food is worth the wait! We were sat within 15 minutes so even better. We were thrilled to see fried mozzarella on the specials menu, the last time we had their fried mozzarella we swore it was the best we've ever had; this remains true! We also had the arancini special along with the pretzels and cheese dip. Again everything was delicious. Our waitress was also fantastic and everything came quickly! We love this place and can't wait to visit again!

Excellent food and service. Ordered the teriyaki beef bowl and it was so delicious. The pizzas looked incredible and next time I go I will certainly try one. Decent selection of various local craft beers.

Half soppresetta and medjool honey and half eggplant parm pizza
Eri L.

I adore when pigs fly bread, so when I found out they had a pizzeria, I knew I had to check it out. I tried their soppresetta and medjool honey option, which was a good balance of sweet and savory. The eggplant Parmesan pizza was also good, though I wish there were more of the eggplant Parmesan wedges for the size of the pizza. Wish those wedges came as an appetizer. Crust was very thin and the tomato sauce leaned heavily to the sweeter side. Service is efficient. They offer a Wednesday night happy hour with $10 pizzas if you happen to be in the area. Bonus: company store is within the same building so you can also stock up on their fantastic bread and baked goods on the same trip.

Stopped in for a quick bite after first visiting the bakery next door! Thought I was going to have pizza, but there were some other interesting sandwich & bowl options. I decided on their new Asian-inspired beef bowl. The steak was tender and there was plenty of rice and veggies. The sauce was a tad bit salty but nicely ginger-forward. My friend had the fried haddock sandwich with tartar sauce & house fries. The batter was extremely crisp and light. The fish was fluffy and flakey. Reportedly the best fish sandwich consumed in a long time. I enjoyed the fries which were flat like chips but more French fry-like. Our server, Nick, was awesome and attentive and checked back regularly. The vibe is a brewery/pub that's buzzing with happy customers. Very clean and great spacing between tables so you're not sitting on top of folks. Highly recommend.

Always a great place to hang our hat. Great service, food and choice of craft brew. Adding a Bissell Bros stout would be even better.

Delicious lunch both times we stopped. Don't leave without going next door to their bakery and buy some fresh, hearty loaves of bread.

Here's the food: Arancini - good flavor, odd shape and breading, didn't come with sauce Calamari - slightly overcooked, not that tough but wasn't soft like fresh should be, but it was crispy Caesar salad - very good Side salmon - star of the show, delicious Kids butter pasta - it was fine, the pasta was a little over cooked Flank steak - cooked perfect. I'm not convinced it was flank steak just be the texture, it was leaner than expected but delicious - closer to strip steak. The cold potato salad is an odd choice. Carbonara Pizza - it's not carbonara, it's a breakfast pizza. MAYBE they used guanciale, but it was sliced thin like bacon with a few whole strips, not chunks like you'd expect carbonara. Also had chunks of mozz on it and a poached egg or too. I personally would have made a carbonara sauce as the base and then chunked guanciale on top. A little pepper and parsley to pull it together. Honestly disappointed, carbonara is a top dish for me. Dessert menu is lacking big time. The complementary soft serve gelato was good, not great. The place is fine, I wouldn't go back.

A friend recommended this spot when I visited Portsmouth ... knowing full well that I love dive…read morebars and vintage places. I would say this qualifies as both. The pizzas are a lot more expensive than I thought an individual-sized bar pie would be ... and the pizza was honestly nothing I couldn't make at home in a toaster. However, the 70's atmosphere didn't dissapoint. The best part about this place ... other than the fantastic waitress ... was the ice cold beer. It comes in a frosted mug and is some of the coldest beer I've had on draft. The prices weren't terrible at about $5 - $7 per glass, although the glasses seemed a little small. 12 ounce maybe. The best of the pizzas we ordered was the roasted garlic pie. The garlic was sweet but also had the typical garlic taste. Hamds down, I woukd order this again. The hamburger pizza was the worst of the bunch with dry, tasteless burger crumbles on it. I was surprised to see so many good reviews about it. Everything else was just okay. Next time, I'll try one of their more intrtesting pies like the bratwurst one. A one-topping pizza was $15 - $16 and was about the size of a frozen Cape Cod pizza from the supermarket. About the size of a dinner plate and enough for one person ... probably not to share. I heard interesting things about the wings bit I am not a fan of 'heat challenges', so we skipped those after hearing another customer say they could barely finish one due to the pepper. Overall, if you want to feel like you are in the late 70's/early 80's, this is the no frills vibe you'll get. Except in the 1970's the cost of one pizza today could buy dinner for an entire sports team back then. This place gets my recommendation, especislly if you like a thinner/crisper crust and well-done cheese/toppings. Places that have been around since Gerald Ford was President are a rare thing these days, especially off the highway in a town like Portsmouth.

The outdoor seating looks gorgeous, and the indoor seating looks cozy, so I thought the food could be promising. We ordered the Mushroom Pizza and the Fig Pizza. The Mushroom Pizza was decent, but honestly not as flavorful as it looked. Just based on the mushroom pizza, I would probably give Napoletana 3 or 4 stars. However, I did not like the Fig Pizza at all. I am a sucked for unique pizza flavors, and love a dash of something sweet (Hawaiian Pizza or a Hot Honey pizza are my favorites!). This Fig Pizza was SO SWEET. There was so much jam on it that it was sweeter than candy! My brother-in-law and mother-in-law could not eat it. I think this would have been much better with fresh figs, or just a dash of jam here and there. We barely touched the fig pizza as I seemed to be the only one who could get through it. As for the service, we got takeout, so I can't speak much to that. But our pizza was ready on time and everyone seemed polite upon pickup.
