Stopped in on hr 7 or a 12hr road trip. I was pretty stoked about a wood fire pizza oven and bc I was driving, ordered a small beer. The server was sarcastic and brash, after I learned he was originally from Boston, it's attitude made sense. The small beer, is really just a sampler and so he took that back for an actual glass of beer. We ordered wings and the Spicy Italian sausage. My wife loved the wings and the pizza didn't disappoint. I have wanted to try When Pigs Fly Pizzeria for years. Anytime I go to Kittery to go shopping I always pass it and wonder what it would be like inside. Well this shopping trip, I made it a stop that was a "must"! When my friends and I walked into the restaurant we were amazed with the open, modern and partially industrial look to the restaurant. The open kitchen was beautiful and the whole place was buzzing with a great energy. We sat down at table and pursued the menu. I was amazed with the diverse and scrumptious menu. We started with the Belgium fries (with 3 sauces) and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. Both were great! The fries were thin and came with a Sriracha Mayo, Horseradish Mayo(My favorite) and Ketchup. We devoured them as fast as we could and moved onto the Brussels Sprouts. They were great! The Asian inspired sauce I could of eaten by itself. They were cooked perfectly and even had those little crispy edges that make my taste buds dance! Of course when you are at a Pizzeria you need to order some type of pizza. The three of us decided to split the Four Cheese & Pesto. Who can pass up ricotta on a pizza? We couldn't! It came out and was the perfect size! As an added benefit we asked for some tomato sauce on the side (It is a white pie, so no sauce on it). The sauce was great! It was so flavorful, fresh and light! We were really impressed with everything we ordered. We also enjoyed a libation or two while we were there. They carry a lot of Maine Beers and they offer a smaller size if you want to make your own taster! We were really impressed with the array of beers, wine (some even on tap) and drinks! The service was great too! Our waitress was accommodating (we ordered a random side of sauce and she didn't even bat an eyelash) and friendly! We had multiple people stop by our table to fill our water gasses and take plates away as soon as we were finished with them. Our water glasses never seemed to reach half way! I was impressed. Delicious in every element, asparagus perfectly cooked, not over cooked, not mushy. Beautiful dish, and the chef should be proud to have the picture posted. The average--Beer-- not as good of a selection as it should be, but not bad. The bad: it's 18 bucks-- where in God's name is the rest of it?? This wasn't enough food for one of Snow White's dwarfs. And starch? Starch is cheap. Where the hell is the starch? At least put it over rice, or cous cous or something. I had to order fries ($7.00 for a fried potato? And no one cares about your 'sauces'. It's a potato in oil. Mayo should never touch a potato. French fries... With Ketchup... Should be $4.00, most). It's very strange to find such a hipster vibe along Route 1 in Kittery. Clearly, whoever designed this restaurant was aiming for a clientele and price point that's way out of line with a pizza place. The beer list is far and away the best part of the restaurant. They have a huge selection of local microbrews on tap, as well as a long list of bottled and canned (hipster, anyone?) beers. The wine list was impressive, but somewhat limited for a place this pricey. The menu was very short; basically one page that was half apps and half pizzas with a few sandwiches thrown in. Apps and pizzas both tend to be very pretentious. Lots of odd ingredient combinations and exotic vegetables. They do have a basic cheese and a basic pepperoni, but I'm not sure that either is actually on the menu. We just asked. Pies are 12 inches, starting at $15 and going up from there. Apps vary from $8 to $20, depending on what you want. The wait staff was friendly enough, but the place definitely does not exude that down-home Maine charm that other restaurants in the area are famous for. The decor is so hipster you'll feel like you're in Cambridge, and the check won't do anything to shake that sense of dislocation. Overall, I'm sad to say that it just doesn't work. This is a pizza place owned by a bakery with a certain earthy, crunchy, irreverent approach to their products and marketing. I'm sorry I didn't take pictures by the time we were able to get our order back to camp the gang was HANGRY. The fries were good, a little more pepper than I would like but fresh cut. The Mac n cheese I felt didn't have much flavor, it was creamy and looks delicious with a generous portion, but felt like it was just a creamy noodle. The chicken tenders were fresh chicken, and homemade breading, but again they peppered these which I thought was strange. The fries came with 3 different sauces. One was horse radish tasting and the other two were spicy. I asked for blue cheese and that was DELICIOUS, homemade for sure and sooo good. We placed our order and was told it would be a 35 minute wait for pick up giving us a specific time to stop in, and we still waited an additional 20 minutes from that given time. Not only do I want to eat at the restaurant, I want to hit up the connected retail store that sells many of the raw ingredients to the foods they prepare on their menu. The Greek salad hit the spot, which farm fresh ingredients, an awesome Greek dressing, and assorted Greek olives. Our daughter spied the Bavarian pretzel, which was easily the best pretzel I ever had - soft and doughy on the inside and slightly crusty on the outside. It was served with honey and mustard that were delicious alone, but even better when mixed in the plate like a painter's palate. This was one of those places where it's difficult to choose because everything just sounds so good. we ended up trying the Medjool Date and Soppressatta pizza with Mike's Hot Honey. We ate here. My daughter got this garlic cheese (takes a breathe) bread. (Wipes sweat off his forehead) my son got a child's (oh man... takes a drink of water) Mac n cheese. My dad (steps away. Paces a few steps) got a Caesar salad. He really liked the shrimp (takes a 5 minute break) on it. We ordered fries for the table. The server kindly said servings were large so we only got two orders. Food is very good, staff needs to be more knowledgable about the menu and less concerned with flipping tables. Ordered a buffalo Mac at the recommendation of our waitress and when it was delivered it was a half bowl. Wanted to send it back but she took off for 10 minutes. When I questioned her she said it was a serving and didn't offer to add to it or offer something else. For $12 a half bowl is a rip off! Pizza is good, make sure you get pizza with red sauce and don't get the Italian sausage. Good food presentation but overpriced. Bakery is 5 star and offers reasonable prices for great breads. We called in an order of the margarita pizza and a house salad because a) we wanted to take the food back to our hotel room in Portsmouth, b) here not knowing the ambience of the place and c) cuz the restaurant was closing in 30 minutes. The ambience was very nice- open floor plan, extremely clean, kinda like a really big, modern Chipotle. Casual and very inviting. If we didn't order the pizza to go and had it not been so late, we would have loved to eat there. The pizza was great. Well balanced sauce to dough to cheese proportions. I ate lunch here with a friend today and was impressed with everything. The service was terrific, the menu had tons of choices (this is not just a pizza place), the food we ordered was delicious and the portions were huge. I highly recommend the Korean braised chicken bowl. It had a ton of flavor, the chicken was melt in your mouth tender, it was brimming with nice crisp-tender veggies and topped with a lovely sunny-side up egg. So yummy. Popped in here on our family vacation this year because the menu looked great and I'm a sucker for great bread. First, the company store is worth a trip on its own. A wide array of baked breads, cookies, muffins, spreads and chocolates are all displayed beautifully. They had samples out in back when we were there. Picked up 4 of the cookies and they were really good. The restaurant has a bar/cafeteria vibe with an open kitchen. Our server seemed pretty annoyed with us most of the night and once she took our order we continually had to flag her down for drink refills, condiments and the check. She may have just been overwhelmed - but it was a little off-putting. Food was all well prepared and we felt like we got what we paid for. My parents have long sung the praises of When Pigs Fly's pizzeria, especially their happy hour during the week when their extensive list of draft beers are on special, along with some wines. Living and working M-F in Portland, it hasn't been an option for us to get down there in time for that, as I believe it ends at 6:00. They also absolutely love the pizza here, but my girlfriend and I comprise a 2-person group called the NFG (No Fun Group), and she can't handle gluten and we both have occasional issues with dairy. Some places have gluten free dough and even vegan cheese, and not the case here, but not to worry. It turns out some their other food options are fantastic too. The seating here is a little more limited when the outside area is not open, but they managed to squeeze us into a table towards the back and service was quick and friendly. There's also a probably 10-12 seat bar area, but everyone had done that annoying thing where they sat one seat away from the next person so that was full up. My lady had the app of mussels for dinner and they were fantastic. A really delicious broth and it was a loaded bowl enough to make for a decent dinner. I had the corned beef reuben, which was also excellent. It was probably one of the more expensive sandwiches I've had in recent memory at $14.00 without so much as a couple of Cape Cod chips thrown on there (you can get a side of Belgian fries for $7), but man, it was one damn good reuben. I have no idea if the corned beef is made in house or not, but everything was really fresh and all of their insanely fresh breads seal the deal. About 20 beers on draft and some cocktail options. Turns out my parents have the right idea: try and make it for happy hour, get some good deals on beer or wine, and then don't feel nearly as bad about paying $14 for a reuben. First thing you must know about When Pigs Fly Pizzeria is the food, especially the appetizers, is very good. I took my girlfriend to lunch here and we ordered the Brussel Sprouts and French Fries appetizers along with a Margarita Pizza. The Sprouts and Fries were made perfectly and I would definitely recommend. The pizza lacked as much basil as I usually prefer, but nothing to really complain about. My biggest complaint about this place was our server, Debra. We were seated right away and the place wasn't super busy. She had maybe 6 tables which is really giving her the benefit of the doubt. It took her 7 minutes to take our drink order. At that point we had decided what we wanted to eat, so we ordered the food along with our drinks, not really a huge deal. 5 minutes pass and Debra came over with some waters, which we didn't order, it was nice but we were hoping for our coke and sprite. 15 minutes pass and our food comes out. Still NO DRINKS. We were extremely confused. We had never gotten our drinks after a meal before. Finally after another 5-10 minutes we were already fully into our meal, Debra finally makes and appearance with our drinks. She insincerely and nonchalantly apologized, and rushed away. We saw her once the rest of the meal until we flagged her down for the check. Which we had been waiting for long after we finished. I'm sure not every staff member is like this, and maybe Debra was just having a bad day, however that was how our first experience went. As I highlighted in my review of the bakery next door to here, the food is absolutely amazing! Walking in your greeted by the aromas of pizzas cooking in a fabulous wood fired oven! Atmosphere is relaxed and has this modern industrial meets the wilderness vibe. Plenty of seating with high top benches for a family style seating along with basic quad seat tables. On this visit I stopped with family towards the end of our trip we stopped in for dinner before heading home. Menu is pretty wide in selection but nothing that's overwhelming. Personal recommendation for an awesome pizza to try would be the sopressata with dates and the hot honey. Really can't remember the exact name of the pie, but those are the toppings to look for; delicious flavors! What can I say about When Pigs Fly bread... well, every time I go to Boston or Maine, I stop for bread and buy a few loaves. The $5 or $6 per loaf is well worth it, given the variety of flavors and all of the samples! During my most recent trip, I bought a loaf of the maple walnut banana bread, which is my favorite. It makes for a great breakfast bread -- so sweet from the maple, crunchy from the walnuts. My wife bought a loaf of the olive bread as well. We were so excited to try When Pigs Fly! The parking lot was busy, the little store was busy, and we had about a 15 minute wait for a table, which lead us to think it would be really good! We looked over the menu while we were waiting and everything sounded pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the food was terrible and way overpriced. My husband had the rueben which was dry and disappointing. For $15, it was just the sandwich and a couple of pickles. We had to order an order of fries separately. It was a hefty portion but the fries came well overdone (borderline burnt - they were dark brown). I wanted to try their pizza, which was undercooked. The middle was soggy and the toppings were far and few between. It had no flavor. At $21, this was certainly a disappointment as well. Our waiter was very nice and the service was great. Maybe they were having an off-day in the kitchen today, but we're not willing to give it another try. This place is awesome. It's right next to the bakery and they have tons of fresh bread items on the menu. I had a salad and sandwich and both were fabulous. They also have a fantastic beer selection including Lawson's Sip of Sunshine on tap. You can order mini beers in order to sample several (sort of like a flight, but you decide how many to get.) We love, love, love when pigs fly! The food is always incredibly fresh, delicious, and made with high quality ingredients. On Wednesday's from 5-8:30 (between September to May I believe) they do basic pizzas for $5. I'm almost embarrassed to say how many Wednesday's we have gone lol! Stars from four.I agree with the two star reviews which there are many .it's very hard to find your way into in the dark the parking lot is confusing and poorly lighted.it's very very noisy as others have said , The seating is very uncomfortable.The service was ok. The pizza is very expensive very skimpy on toppings for the price you pay and it's burnt And tastes burnt ...they advise you its wood fired so it's charred it's not It's Burnt!the sauce if you can taste it through the burnt seems lifeless no taste mushrooms were burnt bell peppers were few and far between This is Not a five star place..it very pricey for what you get .. I was turned away for not moving fast enough to get our masks for an OUTDOOR SEATING. Now it is understood that if social distancing is not available you have to wear it. It was an outdoor area with plenty of distance and I was turned away by a snowflake attitude hostess that went and got the manager. Even the manager couldn't explain the 6' rule for having to comply with eating outdoors not inside but it was "OK for us to not have masks" once we were seated or past their little makeshift tent.
