We think something has changed here. We returned for another lunch recently and came away with some puzzlement and disappointment. Briefly, the shrimp and grits we loved now has a "southwestern" tomato-base with (Adobo) chili sauce instead of what we remembered from our earlier trip, which was Creole sauce. Where did that go? Are our taste memories bad? The grits are still delicious, but the new sauce detracts from it. Maybe we should ask for shrimp and grits with sauce on the side? And the Cheddar Jalapeno biscuits, so tasty originally, are now dry and bland and, to be blunt, awful. The collards are still good, and the pulled pork sandwich is stacked on a brioche bun, though we'd suggest asking for the vinegar-based sauce on the side (we prefer mustard base). I live in Sharon, love barbeque, and would like to write a supportive review of this place, and I've been there a few times to make sure of what I really think. However, I have to be honest and hope the owner takes my criticisms (and those of a bunch of others) and improves it. As it is, the food is uniformly bad and I think suffers from neglect. Here are some details and suggestions. The spare ribs - as some others have said, they are charred on the ends and dry, and hardly taste of smoking - really disappointing. I asked a worker there how long ago they had been cooked (this was on a Saturday). He said Thursday, and said ribs would "age" after cooking and reach their peak in a couple of days, and last a week(!!!). They do a final finishing cook before serving. Well, that entire process simply made a charred dried stale tasteless mess. Perhaps the place is not busy enough to warrant packing the smoker full with lots of meat that would result in a moist and juicy product. Something different needs to be done! Brisket - while the taste was o.k. (the sauces are acceptable - they taste almost identical to some quality store-bought sweet sauces), I was really turned off by the amount of untrimmed fat in the brisket - about 1/3 of the order. The meat should be trimmed before serving!!!! Lack of attention and caring!!! Beer can chicken - again, the sauce was o.k., but the bird itself was overcooked and very dry before I doused it with the mediocre sauce - same problem as with the ribs, and probably the same cause. You've got to cook things more frequently than once or twice a week, or pay more attention!! Pulled pork - this was the best of the 4 meats - nothing too critical to say, but nothing great either - on a par with the pulled pork from Jam's Deli at the nearby Sharon Farm Market. Please do something about your restaurant!!! It reeks of owners' neglect! read more

If dry, re-fired ribs is what you like, then this is the place for you. Actually, if "dry" meat is what you are really looking for - then look no more. We ordered the ribs and a pulled pork sandwich, with mac and cheese and baked beans sides...and got really dried out ribs (which were in no way "wet," as ordered) and the pulled pork sandwich was also dry - the potato bun gets some props...mac and cheese was respectable tho flavorless and the baked beans were good, but had a little too much vinegar which took some getting used to. Sadly, this is not the first time we were dissatisfied with the outcome. Uneven and soulless BBQ - which is kind of a crime in itself. read more

I'm writing here, I have to admit, in hopes that the owners will read this and respond. As a local, I would say at least once a week I think about eating there, yet decide not to because they do not accept credit cards. This means that if I do not have enough cash on me, I must pay a fee to use their ATM. Regardless of the size of the fee ($2 i think) I do not want to have to pay extra for the ability to be a customer. I am often left wondering; how ever much they're saving on the cost of accepting cc's, does that make up for all the business they are losing? I know others who also choose to pass by, rather than be charged an extra fee with their dinner. read more

When Pigs Fly, is located in Sharon, CT 1 block away from hospital. Its a BBQ takeout (soon to be tiny restaurant any day now) was very good. Had sliced brisket on roll- maybe a tad too saucy, but that's just how I like it. Brisket had very mild smoke flavor, I would have liked a bit of fat (i saw some other reviewer had all fat!)- so those of you who like lean, this is your place. The slaw had good flavor, I like mine a little bit finer cut, but good tang. I could do without the peppers in the slaw. Roll was a "potato- like" roll. My lunch companion had a side of beans. Tasted homemade from small beans. It was pretty good, could have cut back on the cumin which was overpowering. 2 sandwiches (very filling) comes with a side each plus a drink was $20.10. This place is not inexpensive. We were stuffed. Just so you know, for now its cash only. They have an atm machine inside. read more

As a Southerner-in-exile (for nine years now), I certainly appreciate some good BBQ. I spend a lot of time in Sharon and almost always end up going to Millerton and Salisbury to eat out...why does Sharon have such a dearth of food and shopping options? Is there some zoning issue? I digress. Anyway, having really awesome BBQ in town is a real blessing. The food is great and fairly priced. The owner (or manager...not sure?) could not be nicer and even brought my order to me well down the block when I was walking my puppy while waiting on a to go order. Have recommended this place to many but that stops now as the customer service is horrid. With one table of 3 It took 30 minutes to get a tie out order. Two weeks ago it took longer to get table service - I will go elsewhere to get my bbq. New Paltz has a great place - The Outpost. Really interesting southern menu- the meat barbecue was done just right not overpowering the meat flavor and not too sweet. The crab shrimp Soup was delicious. We were there for lunch at an off hour so it was nice and quiet. read more

It's pretty good BBQ, however it is a bit small and more of a dive than a restaurant you would want to go out to eat at.

I have eaten here half a dozen times earlier, and found the food to be acceptable. Arrived at 12:30 pm today for a takeout lunch. Ordered the special sampler (a quarter pound eachof chopped pork, brisket and chicken, and a quarter rack of ribs) only to be told that there were no ribs. What kind of BBQ place runs out of ribs at noon? OK, then, I'll have the sliced brisket, please. Sorry, we are out of brisket, too? I passed and skipped lunch altogether... Next time, I'll just go to the real deal, Big W in Wingdale. read more

Stopped in for lunch today after fishing up the road with my son. We had never been here before. The first thing you notice is how nice everybody is...glad to see you, and genuine. We both got the triple sliders, how could you not, and pleasantly surprised that they came with a side, we went with deviled eggs and potato salad. Sat outside...nice. The sliders are pulled chicken, pulled pork, and chopped brisket...with sauce...on a brioche bun. You could not have stuffed more beef, pork, or chicken in those poor slider rolls without a pneumatic tool. They were great, full of flavor and smoke. Deviled eggs and potato salad were delicious. I thought the price point was dead on for what you get. And, uh, we had a really good day fishing at a lake nearby on our first visit ever. Going back. Ribs and gumbo next time. It's a year later and we are still coming back. Food is top quality and service is great. Prices aren't bad considering the area. Big food.....a chopped brisket sandwich with a side is just about too much for one person to eat. Next time, it is sandwich without the bread. This is an updated review from my first review back in 2013. I should have posted this update much sooner! I decided to see how When Pigs Fly was doing last time I was in the Sharon area. I was so happy to see that their construction projects are complete and the restaurant is in full swing: it looks great. Also, the menu was updated and just looked perfect. I again visited on a weekend with my boyfriend and our dog and was greeted with a friendly and cheerful tone, placed the order, then sat outside to wait for the food. That particular day, there was a large group of motorcycle enthusiasts who had also stopped to get lunch. This created a very large, out-the-door wait for the food orders, not to mention the amount of time before actually being served. Considering the circumstance, I was not bothered by this; and am really pleased this place seems to be doing well. The food? OUTSTANDING. That was my biggest disappointment on my first visit; this time, the food (I again ordered brisket, baked beans, mac and cheese, and I think slaw) was just better in every way. The essential aspects were there but they have improved upon the cuts of meat (no disgusting gobs of fat everywhere) and it tastes fresh and perfectly seasoned. The owners seem perfectly suited for running a little restaurant in this charming town and I hope they continue to do well with their BBQ. read more

Well, I did it again. We ordered some take out for the first time in a while, and it was good. The ribs were moist and appeared freshly cooked. However we went in a week later and ordered steaks and the cook had already left. How the hell does the cook leave at dinner time? Remembering the ribs from the previous week, we ordered 2 full and a half racks. 1 1/2 for there and one rack to go. I was pissed they didn't take plastic. I offered the wife to run uptown to the bank and get cash and she said I'll just use the cash machine. So she used the no armed bandit that instantly added $4.50 onto the already ridiculous tab for the food we ordered. So we wait quite a while and finally the first 1 1/2 racks come out. They were cold. I couldn't understand this as it took them 20 minutes to bring it out, which kind of tweaked me. Why didn't they just bring the cold food right away! At least then I would only be half as pissed. There were 2 people working, So I am not sure what took so long. There was 1 table of 2 in there and no one else came in the whole time we were there. We had to send it back and it came back not much warmer than when we sent it back. I'm thinking they were using an easy bake oven with the one light bulb to heat the obviously already cooked and quite dry flaky ribs we were served. So now I'm back off the pigs fly south diet. Maybe I'll try it again in 6 months and hit it on a good day! read more

This is my first review of this place although I have been here a lot more than one time. This time I got the chicken sandwich which came with a side, and the pulled chicken platter (1 lb of chicken) which came with 2 sides. My stomach hates me right now because I ate all of it. The honey corn bread was tasty, the jalapeño biscuits were tasty as was the potato salad. I think there's truth in every comment made so far. I hope the owner reads these comments and make the necessary improvements. That's what make a smart owner. If not you fall on your own sword. What I found more offensive was the fact that the owner/cashier handled money then handled the food without washing his hands. That was so nasty. Then the young man , looked around 16yrs old was handling the ribs and then licked his fingers and then started handling the food again, that is so unsanitary. What they should do is wear rubber gloves for starters. I personally won't return, you should not have to be trained to not lick your fingers and handle dirty filthy money and then the food before washing your hands. read more

I picked up take-out just the other night for my family. Brisket, ribs, beans, biscuits, everything was awesome. Owner was very friendly and although I had made a mistake when calling in, they changed one of my items with absolutely no hassle. I wold recommend this place to everyone. As an aficionado of fine barbecue I have to report on the fine fare available locally in Sharon CT. Twice recently I have had the pulled pork sandwich at When Pigs Fly and it is absolutely succulent. The size of the sandwich is slightly larger than I'd like to eat but it is so good, I have to devour the whole thing. The black eyed peas are my favorite side there. My partner loves their dry rubbed ribs. The owner is personable and hands on. The restaurant is comfortable inside, casual. They offer Louisiana cuisine which I have yet to sample. I recommend this place to all lovers of barbecue, of home cooking, We even took a vegetarian and she loved the different vegetables. read more

This is the real deal. I'm from Texas, and my wife is from NC, so we know what to look for in a BBQ joint. Overall, the best we've had since coming to the northeast, better than anything in NY or NE. They cook their meats "low and slow", with the right amount of smoke. Many spots cook their meats at too high a temp for too short a time, then overcompensate by oversmoking. Not here. Beef brisket, probably the trickiest to get right, is perfect every time, as are the pork and ribs. Sides overall were very good. Cole slaw and Mac & Cheese are excellent. Potato salad misses the mark a bit. A little too upscale for a BBQ spot We've come back often, and will continue to. read more

Our group of 3 stumbled upon this restaurant for lunch on a rainy day recently and were delighted with the decor and service and especially, the food. My smoked beer can chicken meal was outstanding and extremely reasonably priced. The owner and his staff were exceedingly pleasant and accommodating and exuded southern hospitality. I honestly have a problem with this place. I get my food to go and the second I get to my car I just eat it. All of it. It's so dam good I can't stop until it's gone. I swear I've eaten the Mac n cheese and chopped brisket sandwich in under 2 minutes. One time it felt i was having a heart attack so I sat there for 5 minutes to make sure I didn't have to crawl over the Sharon hospital. I love the food. I haven't had one bad thing there. This Place never fails to disappoint. I have been multiple times for lunch and dinner to this glorious restaurant, and I live about 40 minutes away just to give you an idea of how strong of a hold that Chef Bennet's cooking of When Pigs Fly South has on my taste buds and stomach. From Crab Cake Po Boy sandwiches to Memphis/St. Louis style ribs the place has it all. My personal favorite is the Chopped Brisket Sandwich which is, and I use the absolute literal meaning of the phrase is "Finger licking good" nothing like this authentic as you're going to get up here Southern food, with a succulently sweet and tangy sauce to induce that comfort food coma that anyone who has been to the South pines for. The Staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the recent remodeling gives this a real home-like feel to it. It makes you want to fire down some Pulled Pork and wash it all back with a Sweet Tea in a rocking chair. This place is definitely putting some south in your mouth, and deserves a spot on the destination maps of any wandering food connoisseur. read more

Nice restaurant, a small casual place. Very clean. Was very slow though. I had the sliced brisket dinner which came with two sides. Meat was good but had a lot of fat. I liked their white BBQ sauce.
