First off, let's plan a birthday celebration for my spouse, and let's ask for Tesla to take care of the particulars. Our reservations were for 6:30 this evening (Saturday). I selected this time after, get this, reading the Yelp reviews. Yes! This was the perfect time to arrive, as we had a change in lighting/ambiance, as the evening progressed. Our children had time to decorate beforehand so when my hubby and I arrived, things looked quite festive! The mix of ours and the restaurant's farmhouse decor were a great match! Our server, Elsie, was the sweetest: knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and attentive. We were at the restaurant for about 2-1/2 hours, and her mood and service were consistent throughout the visit. We began with drinks and appetizers. Our table had a great view of the floor to ceiling bar, and televisions to catch the Summer Olympics' Track & Field events. We ordered a few of the deviled egg platters, of course, as they came highly recommended by my fellow Yelpers. We also ordered the 'Local Board', which was chock full of exotic charcuterie delights-sweet and savory. Get this: (bare with me-doing this from memory, the menu doesn't specifically disclose, and we had a few cocktails) smoked salmon dip, 2 kinds of cheeses, smoked sausage, some really great sliced turkey, teriyaki jerky, an actual miniature edible honeycomb, spicy mustard, a sweet baked apple-like dip, pickled veggies and peppers, and marbled sourdough. Next, were the entrees. We ordered the whiskey braised short rib, which was tender, with these great crispy edges; the salmon, which was pretty good-just slightly over cooked, the pork brisket steak, atop these awesome roasted corn and pepper jack grits, the sirloin, which was cooked to perfection, and quite a few orders of the '3 Little Pigs' (slow roasted pork). On the kids' menu, the chicken and cheese melt was great-basically a grilled cheese sandwich with pulled chicken. The edges were crispy and light, and a clever way to sneak in the kids' protein! Also, the 'Two Silver Dollar Burgers' were a hit with the littles, as well! Between our own 'Nothing Bundt Cake' and cupcakes we brought with us to the party and the complimentary whisky cake from the manager, Aaron, we had enough dessert to do the job, Certainly you've heard about the whisky cake, who's recipe is a story itself. The manager, Aaron, first came up our table because he said he was excited to see who was celebrating their birthday, which we thought was a nice gesture! He came to our table a total of 3 times, checking on us, chatting with us, and finally, to warn us of the impending dessert-that delicious thing they call a whiskey cake. This may become my new favorite place to have dessert.Although only 2 desserts are offered on the menu ,their signature dessert named Whiskey Cake is scrumptious.It is naturally sweetened with dates with a bourbon vanilla englaise topped with a toffee sauce and spiced pecans . Daniel our waiter made special care to explain items on the menu and even offered to do a lettuce wrap for my turkey burger . The atmosphere inside Whiskey Cake was lively and well lit .The bar was well stocked with 100s of choices of whiskey and they even offered a Bloody Mary station to make your choice of Bloody Mary's . We are OBSESSED with Whisky Cake! Living in Katy, it's kind of hard to come by good food and even better drinks. But Whiskey Cake really takes the cake (no pun intended ) on a dope atmosphere, amazing food, and an experience that never disappoints. My partner and I just started coming to here when it first opened and have been probably a dozen times since then. It's one of our favorite spots for date night and for taking the whole family out, as they're super accommodating for kids. The restaurant itself is huge! They have tons of tables, high top tables, a huge bar, and even a few different couch seating areas for groups if you're just drinking and getting some apps. We've seen everything from large parties to big families to other date night couples here. Although as big as it is, we've always needed reservations even on weeknights as they are super busy and are always pretty packed out. If you come without reservations, you can expect to wait at least 45 mins. Now to the food and drinks - the food is amazing! They have pretty much anything depending on your vibe, from burgers and steaks to our absolute favorite, chicken and waffles! We seriously crave their chicken and waffles ALL the time. Even the kid food is to rave, our kids love their sandwich melts. Their bar is also incredibly stocked, especially if you're a whiskey lover like my partner. They even have Blanton's! My partner loves to get the whiskey flights to try new things, and they switch it out often. I am pretty obsessed with their New York sour! Highly recommend the duck wings and their Brussels sprouts! We've always had fantastic service here, and I have really never been disappointed about anything. Can't recommend this spot enough, we will be back of course! Love Love Love the decor, such a "home" feel to the place. We arrived around 2pm and the restaurant wasn't too busy. We were seated right away and order taken. We ordered deviled eggs, jerky, bacon cheeseburger and a turkey burger/no bun. I also ordered a Winchester drink that was really good! Food was good. Came for a quick pick up after dads dialysis. -1 for not advertising the lunch menu with half price items. -1 for dropping the ball on the honey mustard. This location do not have honey mustard. They hand make it upon request. Which I got the nasty tangy mustard spread across my bottom bun and 1/2 of my 1/2 double double. Took a party of 8 to Whiskey Cake to celebrate my son's graduation. Our table was ready at the designated time and our server Katie (I know she spells it differently than this ) was fantastic! We went at 10:30 not realizing that they close at 11 on Saturday nights now (thought they closed at 12), but were still made to feel comfortable and were not rushed in any way, which we truly appreciated. I ordered the shrimp & grits which was so good! The sauce on the grits was flavorful and their consistency was perfect. Shrimp were also perfect. My partner got the pork chop and he loved his and it was juicy and cooked perfectly. Others at the table got the pork ribs, chicken and waffles, beef tenderloin and the ribeye. My last review was in October of 2017 and my rating remains a pristine 5/5. I have tried many more things from the menu since then and I will say up front, NOTHING DISAPPOINTS AT WHISKEY CAKE. Their drinks are delicious. If you catch them at brunch, there's a guy just grinding at mountains of oranges for your mimosas. They have all booze under the sun and can make anything you want. They made us a penicillin once, and it was damn fine. Every time we visit we get three things: an old fashioned, deviled eggs, and whiskey cake. Their deviled eggs are changing all the time and they're always friggin perfect. There is no reason not to get them. The flavors are expressed so well in their old fashioned; their bartenders are sublime. So is their whiskey cake. It's hot and rich and the toasted nuts on top add texture to the dense cake. They serve fresh whipped cream with it and every bite is just...ah. Perfection. I find myself usually ordering their beyond meat burger; I like how everything goes together. I tried their cheesy couscous risotto with it, awesome. Their adult Mac and cheese? Awesome. Their charcuterie board? Awesome. It's all great and their waitstaff is always out of this world. First time here on Monday 4/22 at 6 pm. Good food. Got the salmon, pork chop, brussel sprouts, mussels, and whiskey cake. The mussels were gross. Couldn't eat them. Everything else was good. Too bad the service was poor. The server, Hunter, (check 100, table 343) wasn't interested in us at all. When he brought the bowl with the whipped cream for the cake he threw it on the table. Shocked us. Wish they had a manager that walked around checking on the tables so we could give some feedback. read more

The service, drinks and food is amazing. Not sure what to order bar and wait staff are so knowledgeable. Service and experience is really second to none whether it is an old fashioned, a flight or just a slice of whiskey cake. Have to give a shout out to the hummus, mussels and chickenbirdger. We may have just ordered the wrong things, but food wasn't great. Chicken tasted microwaved, had better at Whataburger for 1/4th the price. Fries were an extra charge and stuck together, plus they didn't taste like anything. Sat at the high tables and they were too close together so multiple people bumped into my chair. They randomly brought me two different chicken dishes from other tables because I guess it's hard to tell the tables apart. My plate was too narrow and weird. I wasn't impressed for what you pay. Plus, you pay while the waiter is watching you, which is annoying. I think people like this place because it's trendy and they make a big deal of their seasonal menu. But food didn't seem very fresh or special, just overpriced. read more

Highly recommend trying this restaurant, but definitely make a reservation!! We arrived for our reservation on a Friday night and when we got there the people in front of us were told it's an hour wait, this place seems to always be busy, especially on weekends! Now to our experience, the inside is eclectic yet inviting and I felt like I was eating at someone's home almost from the curtains to the table. I recommend trying at least one of their fresh juices, we had the beet one and it was tasty and you could tell it was as fresh as can be! All of their food is sourced as local as it can get, and let me tell you it makes it all taste delicious! We started with the smoked salmon dip and it was better than expected! This is the second location I have been to for this chain. The service here was.... lacking. We waited at the host/hostess area for a good chunk of time before we were seated. The waiter seemed to take a while to get to us. After we ordered things seem to come out in a timely manner but our waiter always seemed not be around. Outside of the service I found the food to be well prepared and the bourbon/whiskey selection to be pretty awesome. While the service may deter me from this location, the one south of Houston had great service. I would go back for the food and beverages. read more

Our server was weeded, so the service was very slow. I had the steak frite and my wife had the pork sliders. The steak was unseasoned and the fries were cool and stale. My wife's fries were at least hot. The sliders were ok but the slaw they put on top was not my cup of tea and it made the bun soggy. I couldn't get anything corrected because the server wasn't able to come check on us. I had to eat the food because I'm diabetic and couldn't wait any longer. The ambiance was nice. We came here for a large going away party and it was super busy on a Saturday night! The ambiance was nice - with large shared wooden high top tables that they divide with two wooden boards on either side of you. They have normal tables as well! The decor is interesting - the lighting looked like fishing poles, there were large ropes tied up in the front and a wall of whiskey behind the bar with a ladder to reach the top top shelf. The waiters wear lumberjack type outfits, which makes it fun! The bathrooms are a shared "watering hole" with small rooms shared between both men and women. Very unique. It definitely took awhile for our food to come out but that was expected because of how busy it was. What I didn't like was that the waitress kept forgetting our orders - she either didn't realize we wanted the item and didn't put it in, or it just never came out! The overall food was just ok - nothing to rave about. The deviled eggs were good, with a twist to them because it tasted like there was pimento cheese mixed into the yolk. The fried green tomatoes were not good, no flavor, not crispy.. a fail. The burger tasted like a normal burger - maybe even slightly too over cooked and dry. The drinks were good and there's a good whiskey selection/flights if you're into whiskey! Guys and gals, I have issues. Let me set the tone, and give you the deets. You decide the validity of my rating. This is specofic to the special events section, NOT the main facility. Last weekend, my older brother FINALLY tied the knot. That man was on a mission, and he accomplished it. He wanted to keep it small and sweet. He chose the banquet room of Whiskey Cakes. We had a run through, all items were discussed. Done. So the day of, we arrived at the time specified, and the party before us wasn't even packing up yet. Mind you, they have event coordinator to handle such matters. And they didn't. So we started late. Members of the party had to help set up, and adjust the seating us it was not going well as left up to the facility staff. I can't blame the employees, as they have a coordinator who should have been.... coordinating. You know, titles and the such. After the lovely service performed by the honerable minister Walker, we were ready for food. They didn't bring out salad for everyone and had to be repeatedly reminded. Mind you, most of the seats were filled and should only have required a seat or head count. OR, they could have counted how many folks ordered dinner and used that (we ordered in advance of the service). From my count there were four different appetizers. These were not provided in enough quantity for the group. Nor were they distributed in any logical fashion. I was only served one. Again, they knew the numbers and should have done it right. We brought 3 cases of wine for the dinner. By the main course, none of it had been served. In any wedding setting, you put out glasses at every seat. You don't need to ask, you do it. Also, when asked they stated they did not have enough wine glasses... What's the point of reserving a venue in advance and doing a run through? Should this not have been an item to bring up? So we had wine glasses, martini glasses and what looked to be margarita glasses. Again, we had to ask them to distribute 3 bottles for every so many guests in a section. Things an event coordinator shoukd be doing. Not me, or any of the guests for that matter. The Duck, came out very good. The sirloin was dry and over cooked for what was supposed to be medium. I did not try the salmon, and no one near me did either. So no comment there. Dessert was good though. We did not bring this to my brother or my now sister-in-law's attention, we managed it. The bar staff and facility staff were in and out. But they were very responsive and courteous. I feel like they did a great job, though a bit stressed. I feel like they didnt get the guidance they needed. Lovely venue, needs work on coordination. I'd come back to try the main facility. read more

Five stars isn't even a high enough rating for this place. I was in Houston visiting family and was told I had to visit Whiskey Cake. The decor and ambiance is adorable. It feels like your grandma is cooking you dinner in her quaint little farmhouse. I ordered the chicken sandwich and it was amazing. What really impressed me was the Mac and cheese, it was arguably the best I've ever had. My boyfriend got the chicken and waffles, something I would never even consider ordering, or even trying a bite of for that matter. After one bite, I was in love. I'm literally STILL thinking about it and it's been a week now. By far one of my dishes I've ever tasted. They have a nice selection of fresh juices or mocktails, I had the ruby slippers and it was delicious. They juice everything there and even make their own simple syrup. You can taste the difference in the mocktail as it didn't take like a cheap store bought simple syrup and bottle of juice mixed together. You could taste the freshness. My boyfriend, a bourbon enthusiast, had a bourbon flight and loved everything he tried. They had a very lengthy list of bourbons you could try and he was quite impressed. We tried the Whiskey Cake as well, you have to, it's their signature! It was delicious but very dense and heavy, as well as sweet. After a few bites I was full. Between four of us, we only finished about half. Comes served with fresh whipped cream as well. Definitely need to try it, but be prepared to take some home. Service was great as well. Our waitress was very friendly and bartenders were very knowledge about the extensive bourbon list. This review is long, and I could go on and on, but Whiskey Cake deserves this GLOWING review. If I lived in Houston, this would easily be my weekly go to. Counting down the days until I'm in Houston next, as this will be my first stop! read more

September 2024 I had a great meal here, food was at an awesome price, was fair and service was great. I just ate here again Jan 2025, however, service was slow, order was wrong bill price was higher for an item by $2.00 than advertised on the menu. The recipe for devil eggs completely changed and the quantity went from 7 eggs to 5 eggs, and the price was higher. In addition, the quality of the food went down overall. First time I came here for dinner it was a 5 star experience. Just left here after having lunch and it was a 2 star experience...so I average it at 3 stars. I ordered the pork brisket and had to send it back because the meat was pretty tough. I ordered the duck breast instead which was lovely but a little undercooked for my taste. I ordered it medium but it looked med rare, but still pretty tasty. Then a lovely gentleman (I'm thinking the manager) stopped to apologize and offered to buy us a whiskey cake on the house which I said we would be taking to go. The service from our waitress after our food was dropped off by the manager was scarce which was a little disappointing. Maybe the waitress was busy but there were several times we were waiting for her to come by and it took a while. Then when we got our check my husband didn't look at it and just handed over his credit card thinking that the Whiskey cake would automatically be comped like the manager said but unfortunately when we checked the receipt after we already paid, we were charged for the Whiskey cake. Not a huge deal but with my first entree being inedible, the lack of quality service, and being charged for something that we were told would be comped the experience was less than perfect. This place was gets 5-stars because of the amazing service received above all else, but I'll break down the food and service reviews. I'll start with the food. Food: We ordered a French press coffee, deviled eggs, shrimp and grits, French toast, and a whiskey cake. The French press coffee is always super fresh and delicious. The deviled eggs, though delicious, coke out very cold.. almost as if they've been sitting in the fridge prior to serving. And some people might enjoy that but I prefer them a bit closer to room temp. They have what tastes like caramelized bacon so they are a bit on the sweet side. Shrimp & Grits are definitely the star of the show! Omg, they're super tasty and delicious No complaints there. The French Toast was good but a tad disappointing given that it was swimming in whatever sauce they put on it and had more whipped cream than bread (not joking). I didn't plan on reviewing so I didn't take a picture because it looked as disappointing as it sounds.. However, after shoveling the vast amount of whipped cream from the top, the toast, itself, was very tasty. I guess you can just ask for the sauce and whipped cream on the side if you order this The Whiskey cake was suuuper delicious! Not sure what kind of bread it was but it was so good. The roasted pecans just made it all much better! Now the Service.. I came here with my wife and baby for the second time. My server was Cruz. Though I'm not a fan of making small talk, especially while eating, Cruz was very funny. He made the entire experience very wonderful. He took all requests with the best attitude and was sure to make us laugh each time he popped in. Then the manger, Aaron, dropped in to check in on us. He also took the time to make the experience a little more personal and memorable. After expressing that it was our second time eating there and hadn't tried their famous whiskey cake, he insisted that we try it, which we stated that we had every intention to this time. Being the sweet man that he is, he insisted that it was on him. Something we definitely did not anticipate. Again, if it's not the few menu items that I enjoyed that brings me back, it's definitely the service and experience.
