Stopped here at lunch. Extremely slow, took 15 minutes to place my order with 1 person in front of me. After I placed my order it took 21minutes for them to tell my name. Stopped on our way to Chicago. At 5:30, the place was totally empty. One table was filled with trash from the last patron. Bathrooms were very dirty and the drink area had old spills and litter. There were no napkins available. Our sliders had clearly been sitting for awhile. They were cold with buns that had been sitting long enough to be crusty. Believe it or not, this was my first White Castle experience ever, and probably my last as well. I didn't expect great things so from that perspective I was satisfied. Honestly, it was gross - soggy buns, mushy patties, an overabundance of onions - ick. I can see how folks might enjoy WC if they grew up with it or were really, really stoned. My main complaint with this location is that it was pretty filthy - we had a hard time locating a table that wasn't food/detritus encrusted. What a pleasant surprise! This White Castle has been completely remodeled and now features "BLAZE - The Modern Barbecue," a sort of restaurant-within-a-restaurant. It is the only one in the world, a pilot that I hope will be copied in many White Castles or spun off into its own chain. The new restaurant fare features barbecue: six kinds of meat - pulled chicken, carnitas, Andouille sausage, Chinese char sui pork, smoked turkey and beef brisket. Dinners may be ordered with one or two sides and all come with a nice little loaf of cornbread - with or without jalapenos baked inside. They also have a sloppy Joe that my nephew likes a lot. There is a great assortment of sides with a home cooking bent, including: mac and cheese, loaded potato salad, Southwestern black beans and corn, redskin mashed potatoes, creamy coleslaw, BBQ baked beans (my personal favorite), corn on the cob, and Brunswick stew. Once you have your meal, you select your sauces from an assortment. They are in pumps so they are easy to pump onto your plate or fill little plastic containers. There five sauces to choose from. Three are mild: Blaze BQ (my fav), Smokin' Tomato Blaze, Sweet Asian Blaze. Blazin' Mustard and Blazin' Chili rate 3 and 4 flames on the Blaze sauce hottness scale. All are good and the two hotties, while warm enough to get a little perspiration going, are not going to hurt anybody. Of course they still have all of the standard White Castle favorites that made them famous. They have an array of drinks and feature Coke products, which puts them closer to my heart, For dessert there are two kinds of pie. The place is bright and clean, with a cool graphic along one wall that references the original White Castle restaurants. This is fast-ish food (go in and sit down to eat - it would be challenging to eat while driving a car) with a new twist. It's fun and delicious. The only problem I can see with Blaze is the job of getting new customers familiar with the new choices. Once that is done, I think people will come back again and again. Get in today and try it while it's still the only one on the planet! UPDATE 5/17/11: Just ate lunch here (pulled pork dinner) and was sad to see the carnitas, Andouille sausage, Chinese char sui pork, and smoked turkey have all been discontinued due to their unpopularity. Born and raised in Colorado; we don't have White Castle, but I have always heard of it and never gotten it so we went on our last trip to Lafayette, IN. This one is updated and has the BLAZE section (which is their BBQ). I wanted classic White Castle so I ordered a number 1 (4 sliders, Crinkle Fries and a Drink) + I ordered a Sriracha Chicken Slider. So the good first: I loved the fries and the chicken slider. Fries where crispy and salty. Chicken tasted meaty and fried, but had zero heat. The classic burgers where heavy on onions and pickles (which I liked) and light on meat (it is a weird thing patty with holes in it). The roll is like a Hawaiian roll and is really soft and yummy. It was and experience, but I don't think it is for me. It must be a mid-west thing! The place was near the hotels in Lafayette and it was very clean, so those are all pluses! read more

First time eating at a White Castle, and it is certainly the last time. I did not know there was a fast food chain worse than McDonald's, but this is definitely it. I ordered one of the combos - 4 original sliders, fries, and a drink - and of it, only the drink was really edible. Fries were average at best - they had the dead texture of something cooked from frozen and absolutely no flavour. The patty of the sliders were as thin as quarters - which might have been acceptable if the rest of the sandwich was at least average. Instead you get a garnish of onions that taste close to spoiling, a pickle that had the resistance nearly of a rubberband when you bit into it, and the bun was the most horrific. The bottom one was soaked in the gods-know-what, liquifying part of the bread into a substance with the consistency of mucus and which disintegrated as you handled the burger. Literally was the most revolting food I ever tried to eat - I could not even force myself to finish two of them, they were that gross. I do not know how this chain stays in business if that is the way the sliders are usually served. For the ~$6 I spent on the combo, I could have bought most of the fixings to make my own sliders, and there would have been many more and infinitely better than the slop they serve for that price. I would not recommend White Castle to anyone based on this experience. read more

I've never understood the allure of White Castle. It's the thinnest patty in the world, covered in onions. I think the draw is that you can get so many of them. Oh my goodness, "WhileCastle" is so much better than it was when I was a child and I flipped if I could get a white castle of then! My wife (the luscious Anna) and I are on our way to Chicago see our son that's in Sweden normally starting at one of the premier music universities in Sweden! I took the bag of sliders and interestingly, it came with a bag with something with a hole in it (we thought they were onion rings) but, they are a whole bag of chicken circles! I got to tell you mine and my wife's tasted them first and we both were looking at each other in a quizzical manner, then I tasted it and I said it it's chicken! so, she brought some barbecue sauce packets that they had a really interesting packets too, and we well I had a feast on these chicken circles! This is a TERRIBLE and very UNSANITARY place! I ordered two sliders with only cheese, mustard, and ketchup. They gave me a slider with cheese, onion, and pickles. I took it back and they just scraped off the onions and pickles and gave me the same sliders back with ketchup and mustard. There was also a HAIR found in one of the sliders! This is very unsanitary, especially during a pandemic! And I also have a sensitivity to onions so this is very dangerous for me! It's not that hard to make a couple of sliders correctly. At least I never have this problems at Wendy's! We were also the only car in the drive thru and it was very slow. It took about 15 minutes just to get my order. Heading north on 65 heading home to Chicago, about half way home and jumped off the highway to grab a quick bite. In the drive thru I asked for the Mac & cheese bites but was told they don't have them so I ordered 4 veggie burgers and a bag of onion rings. (1). We ended up waiting approximately 20 minutes in the drive thru. One car ahead of us that they had move up into the 'waiting spot' so we could pay. Then there we sat and waited. Got the food, jumped back on 65 north and then dug into the bag. (2). The veggie burgers were bland, bland and boring. No taste whatsoever from either the bun or the veggie burger. I've been ordering these for years at other locations and love them! So after the disappointment with the burgers I reached into the sack of what was to be onion rings, but got onion chips instead. Oh well, it's still oniony. (2) These were completely horrible. Greasy and the ones at the bottom of the sack were all clumped together. Quality control??? Pick another place to go.
