I've read the reviews and it doesn't seem like the owner even reads them or responds to criticism. I was shocked when I walked in and smelled smoke, but I get it they are a bar and that's probably what makes the owner his money so why change things. So we thought we could get through it it was mid day on a Friday. Food wasn't bad on the buffet. I thought it was good value for the money. Service was nice. But the smoke got worse so we had to leave. Would I eat here again? Probably not, unless i sat outside. A few changes (non smoking) they can smoke outside like everyone else does. I have eaten here off and on over the years and always enjoyed everything however we went Saturday night around 6pm and it was a great disappointment. There was no buffet as advertised on their website, salad bar looked as if it was stocked in the morning and not touched since, soup was cold, and banana pudding was old. Super awesome bar, IF you're going for the dive bar type feel. My husband and I love a good dive bar, and that's just what this is. A huge awesome dive bar! Great beer, great bar food, and even better service. The bartenders are always in a good mood, and always up for a chit chat. The beer is always freezing cold! The decor is SUPER fun! I also love how there's different levels, different floors, and TONS of outside seating. The ONLY downfall is smoking is allowed. So the bar can get hard to breath in after awhile. The world must be upside down for this awesome retro American bar to get slammed like it does yet it's packed every time I come here. What does that tell you? Pros: 1) Great iconography and visual elements around the bar, showcasing its history 2) Inexpensive, relatively strong drinks 3) You can smoke!!! (I don't smoke but once in a while, a cigarette is like a joint to me--but it's the freedom that I appreciate) 4) Male bartenders are nice guys who understand wit / humor and not 20-year old children with chips on their shoulder. 5) Older bikers and customers are normally very respectful, friendly and kind. I've had people treat me very well here. 6) Burgers and nachos are good 7) It feels like TEXAS (or Route 66 in old California)--and not like woketopian Tarrant county (which is what it is) 8) Few if any complaining babies can handle this spot and leave quickly. So baby and snowflake-free environment! Yay Minor Cons: 1) Some of the (rare) younger bikers may enjoy glaring at you with the death stare in the hopes of sparking up an altercation. I do not engage and just ignore them BUT their friends need to be more aware of this as it creates bad energy. I'm not 15 years old and don't get off by fighting in bars with 21 year old kids. Plus this is Texas. Fights don't last long. And they don't normally end well. 2) Younger female bartender seems very overwhelmed at times, and flustered. She needs help but more than anything--she needs to learn to enjoy herself because it creates a weird vibe at the bar. And she's very nice--this isn't a rudeness thing. (I've also seen her handle ALL the drinks solo for the whole bar which is probably why she's stressed out a lot) Note on Buffet: I don't eat buffets because they always disappoint me. But man--the complaints here for the buffet are hilarious. It's a buffet man! Have you been to Vegas? Enjoy it for what it is. Stuff your face and be happy or order food cooked to order, which is--shockingly--always better . I love this place ! I've stopped in here many times while riding bikes. Just recently I rode over for their Sunday brunch . I'm really surprised it doesn't get better reviews . The atmospheres great and laid back. It's an old historic building with a lot of charm. The food is good home cooking and bar food and the beer is nice and cold. What more does a person want . There is even live music on certain nights. If you haven't been here , especially if your a bike rider, you owe it to yourself to give it a try ! read more

If you're going for the buffet, I hear it's a decent value. I don't recommend coming here at night, however. I was minding my own business dancing here on the dance floor New Year's Eve. I said "Hi" to a lady dancing 5ft away from me and she smiled & said hi. Then some drunk Ginger man flew over there and pushed me and yelled at her, and jerked her off of the dance floor. Then his drunken buddy came at me and tried to punch me, which I easily avoided. For this, I was told to leave. I came back a couple of days later and was told by a bartender (Nick?) I think, that I'm no longer welcome there. Ok. Makes sense to me.. the owner (Someone named Eric whom I don't even know!) Said I'm not welcome there. Eric, I don't even know you, but look at the videotapes and get back to me. Dive bar at its best! Old school cool place for a cold one, music and a little dancing when the music is live and you have downed a few beverages. Willhoites has been around a long time and it's one of the bars that still allows smoking inside the bar and on the patio...like I said old school. Play pool up stairs or come on the weekends for their dinner buffet for $12.00 a person and I remember when it was $8.00...so I have been here when I was a bit younger. We still come here for a drink every now and then. They have bike parking out front for us but sometimes you get someone with a steel cage that does not know that the parking by the gas pump is reserved for us bikers. I met my husband here on a Thursday night about 10 years ago so it holds a special memory for me. If you are in downtown Grapevine then come in for a drink and watch people to pass the time. read more

Spoke to the owner or manager and she seemed more concerned about me revising my review than actually apologizing for the mistake in the first place. She basically accused me of lying. You could have a repeat customer had you handled the situation more professionally. She basically cut me off and said "I am not going to have this conversation with you" Then, you don't get an updated review because you don't deserve it! I definitely will not be back. ----------------- I strongly recommend to not open a tab at this bar. Apparently they put other people's drinks on your tab without asking or getting your permission. I can't believe I've never written a review on Willhoites considering we frequent this favorite Sunday morning brunch a few times a year. This spot is one of the oldest and most historic buildings in Grapevine: from 1919 - 1975 this was a service station, providing auto repair, battery re-building, tire sales and service, auto parts and accessories, and wrecker service. The owner, Ted Willhoite, closed the garage and retired in 1975. In 1981 the building was purchased and renovated into the current restaurant, keeping many aspects of the former automotive shop. It is a two story building with private rooms for groups, meetings, etc on the 2nd floor. The main dining area is downstairs with a nice bar area and outside patio, Best described as a real old school dive bar, it has a real comfy welcoming feel. Willhoites has a daily buffet lunch along with a regular menu. We particularly enjoy the Sunday brunch which offers an extensive selection of breakfast, lunch & desserts options. What to choose? Breakfast with an omelet & waffle station, eggs, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, french toast, biscuits & gravy; or shall we enjoy an enormous salad bar along with fried chicken, fried fish, sirloin tips, brisket, roast beef, veges offerings of famous mashed potatoes, beans, peas, corn, fried okra, french fries, 3 different soups, and on and on. Oh, mustn't forget those light tasty yeast rolls, gotta have one of those. Lunch it is for sure. As you can see, a huge selection of AYCE choices for $16, a pretty great deal for those with a lumberjack appetite. Although I don't fall into that category I find it still a worthwhile expenditure even for those like me who can only consume one plate of a little bit of everything. The food is good; it's just simple down home cooking, nothing fancy, but enjoyable. Items on the salad bar are fresh, with a choice of over 50 selections including in season fruit; I like the fried fish (chicken & dumplings when they have it) and as many vegetables as I can load on my plate. The buffet is monitored frequently and refilled as needed. Service @ the bar where we always sit is friendly and prompt. It's a unique place with so much character that we enjoy visiting! Today is the second time I have eaten at Wilhoite's. Their Sunday brunch buffet is a little pricey, but it's worth every penny. I know I had to have eaten $50 in their thick cut bacon. Great little place. Came here last Friday with my buddy and our wives and kids for an early dinner before checking out all the Christmas stuff. Server was very nice, restaurant was very clean, food was pretty good, and the staff actually ran out to Braums for milk for our kids because they were out. Totally did not expect that, it was extremely nice and generous of them. Pricing, portion, and quality of the food was just right all around. You are not gonna some bejazzled ridiculous goat milk bearnaise sauce, this is just good Merican food done right. My ribeye was terrific, family and friends tried to steal my delicious onion rings, and it was priced very fairly in spite of all the inflation due to the nation's very poor leadership presently. This was definitely not a classy joint. My husband and I just ended up here because it was close and affordable. We chose to eat out on the patio because the smoke was strong in the restaurant. When the waitress finally arrived at the table she quotes us the wrong drink prices ($2.75 seemed a little too good to be true), but let us order them anyways. When the drinks came out, we couldn't even taste the alcohol (probably because there wasn't any because she charged us $2.75). I asked the waitress what she would recommended and she said that they were known for their burgers. She also recommended the buffet. When I got up to check it out, it was obvious that the food had been sitting out for quite awhile. I politely passed and ordered a bacon cheeseburger. My husband ordered the country fried steak. When we got our food, the burger was overcooked and didn't have any flavor. The only good thing about the burger was the bun. It tasted homemade and had a great taste to it. My husband thought his country fried steak was decent but didn't have much flavor. All in all, for the price we should have gone to Jake's Burgers down the street. read more

Wilhoite's, for a Sunday brunch, gets a solid A-OK and a half (3.5 stars) in my book. When a friend suggested we meet her here for breakfast on a Sunday morning, I was not sure what to expect. I've been to Wilhoite's in the evening, and Sunday brunch is the last thing I would associate with the place. I walked in, saw (and smelled) the Wilhoite's I know. Yes, smoking is allowed and even in the non-smoking section you won't escape the smell. Luckily for us, smokers we at a minimum, and it was not that bad. What did surprise me was the omelet bar, the waffles, and the variety of food at the buffet. The omelet was whatever you want from a wide variety of ingredients. The made to order waffle was also surprising good. I also sampled many, though not all, items from the buffet. Everything I tried (biscuits and gravy, brisket, deep fried cod, fried chicken, lots of fruits and vegetables) was OK. For $12.00, it struck me as a pretty good deal and you certainly could eat your fill with good variety. So bottom line, much better than I was expecting and worth keeping in mind, especially if a trip to Grapevine (i.e. to see the new glockenspiel) is on the agenda. read more

I was in town for 5 days for a training for grad school, and our school bussed us from our airport hotel to Grapevine for dinner each night. I ate at several places in Grapevine that were nice, but had a horribly shocking experience at Willhoite's. A diverse group of 9 of us tried to eat here. We chose it because it had a table big enough to accommodate us, and we were able to look at menus outside before we came in. (There were stacks of food and drink menus on a table just outside the front door.) When we walked in, we got a bunch of looks, but we didn't think much of it. When a server finally came to our table, she stood there with a pen and an order pad, and didn't say anything. We started ordering drinks. When she got to my end of the table, I asked if I could look at a drink menu, and she just frowned at me and said, "We don't have many." Ummm...okay. So I just ordered something. Everyone in our group kind of exchanged glances as she left, but we went back to chatting. We then started noticing that we were getting glares (we were not at all loud) from all over the restaurant, employees and patrons alike. It was at this point that we realized that no one in the bar wanted a diverse group eating in this establishment. This was racism. We all decided to leave, but we are honest people, and wanted to pay for our drinks before we left (even though we didn't have them yet.) We waited a long time, and then our drinks came. Another server walked up and said the first server had given her the table because she didn't want it. We explained how we had been treated and that we didn't want to stay. She said something like, "Well, that's not my fault! Are you going to let me take your order? Or settle your checks." No apology. We said we wanted to settle our checks. We left cash for our drinks, and went to another restaurant. It was an upsetting experience that affected each of us. Some at the table had never seen racist behavior in person, and some were all too familiar (we live all over the country) but everyone at the table will remember the experience for the rest of our lives. If you value diversity, I recommend you don't go here. If you're an older white racist, this is your place. We were told by the server at the other restaurant (which was great) that Willhoite's is a bar for locals. Not shocking. read more

Is this a joke? We stopped in for a quick dinner with visiting friends and are so embarrassed. When asked if we wanted smoking or not we should have left but decided to try it anyway. The food was very average and not fresh. The drinks were very weak and not balanced. I definitely do not recommend and will not return. read more

It's definitely an old-timers' place, given that it smelled like nothing but cheap spilled beer and stale cigarette smoke. The bartender seemed nice but didn't know what any of the drinks cost. We went for the lunch buffet for the first time based on a Facebook post I'd seen with the restaurant raving about it. The food was 2 stars at best. Everything bland from the mashed potatoes to the broccoli stems (not a floret to be found in the watery mixture), and I sure didn't expect hotdogs to be one of the buffet entrees. The staff was friendly and our plates were collected but no other interaction with staff. Also be aware this is a bar and there were 3 very intoxicated individuals sitting at the bar across from our booth talking loudly, cursing loudly and even lighting up a cigarette in a non smoking establishment, at 2pm on a Thursday none the less. read more

The fried shrimp was frozen baby breaded shrimp, the meatballs were a frozen product, sausage was Luke warm and hard and the roast was ok. Canned vegetables. Salad bar was decent. Overall it's a drive on by, unless you just have a group and want to visit. But if you want good food it's a pass.! read more

If Ok = Wolf's brand canned chili, this is your place. Oh you like Wolf's brand chili? Do you like paying $9 a can for Wolf's brand chili? Yeah I didn't think so. And I don't think I have ever said to myself, "You know, I'm in a touristy landmark and I want some overpriced canned chili for a snack." Didn't really know what we were walking into on a Thursday early afternoon lol. There was a place across the street we were going to eat at, we put our name and number on their call waitlist--45 minute wait--so we walked around while we waited. Ran across this place and decided to walk in. There's outdoor seating as you walk up, as you enter, it is seat yourself. Front is smoking section (no idea that was still a thing) or keep walking to go past the bar and enter the non smoking dining room. That's where we sat and it was like sitting in a train car. Kinda cool. Place is rustic. I think I saw a sign out saying it was one of the oldest restaurants or maybe building. Nonetheless the inside has character. There was not a wait and we found a seat in the dining room. We asked for a menu, and the waitress said she would bring one--but there was buffet if we wanted to take a look. That's was we ended up doing. Decent salad bar with lots of toppings, Mac salad, and dressing. Some fruit and cottage cheese if that's your desire. Hot side was a ton of farm vegetables: green beans, beans, corn, carrots, Brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes. Meats included meatballs, meatloaf, smoked sausage, chicken...and then two soup options. Dessert included was banana pudding, ice cream, cobbler and some brownie pecan bar. Overall it was good. Realistically not the best meal of my life. But for two of us to eat the buffet for less than $15 a person--not a bad deal at all. You can get full and it's not "junk food"...if you don't want buffet, just ask for the menu. Either way, good service which can be hard to find these days. (By the way, we never received a call or text from that other restaurant...we would still be waiting! And if we had eaten there, I'm sure our bill would have been more than double.) read more

Excellent, great tasting, perfectly seasoned, fried catfish on the AYCE buffet on Friday's. Several other really good entrees to choose from as well! Salad bar is so very fresh with lots of items to choose from and the atmosphere is really laid-back and the staff is always friendly and helpful. Banana pudding really hit the spot for dessert!
