A couple things to know. They only accept checks and debit cards, so regarding your Amex card, you can leave home without it. The prices are good but I am not impressed with the meat department and usually end up going elsewhere to buy meat. I do like the bulk section and leave with bags of various items from candies to dried fruits and other snack items. The bakery is small and the selection is lacking. I am also not a fan of bagging my own groceries. The prices get me in here from time to time but it is not my primary grocery store. read more

Probably the best supermarket I've ever been too. I was directed here from my Airbnb host to stock up for the week. Prices are very good. Cold clean store. The huge selection of bins where you can buy what you want and exactly what you want blew me away. I was planning on cooking and getting some basic spices I was able to buy an ounce of chili or 2 ounces of pepper etc. The sell everything from salt, to flour, to snacks, and candy in bulk bags. When we moved here, we kept driving by the store with their sign open 24 hours and a company owned business. We doubted we could shop there but finally decided to check it out. Yes you can! They don't carry every item and every brand imaginable but their prices are regularly lower than other grocery stores. If you're not picky about particular brands, this is the place for you. They have a little or a lot of everything. They also have a nice size bulk food section where you can find anything from nuts, chocolates and baking needs to pasta. You bag your own groceries but who cares? I prefer to go through self check out usually anyway so it makes no difference but I'm usually buying too much so I can't fit through the express check out! Terrible experience here tonight! I recently closed my Arizona checking account and in turn no longer have a debit card, but I saw on the Winco website that they except checks (which I have lots of because who writes checks anymore?!) so I spent over an hour getting everything I needed for our upcoming Halloween party this Friday. I also promised my daughter a pint of her favorite ice cream, which she was very excited about. I get to the register and write out my check, then she tells me she needs to see my license and the address has to match....well I've moved twice since I ordered those checks so it did not match. She said that was fine and she just needed to get manager approval. Ok cool...so the manager comes over and says "sorry, that's against store policy." Now tell me, what the heck did he even need to be called over for?? Useless. I just can't believe they will take an EBT card without ID but not a check with the same name as the ID! So I left my cart and half bagged groceries and walked out. I will never go here again, it's not worth it. I would rather go to Walmart or clip coupons for Safeway. Recently at the self check out A woman cashier came and sat right in front of me no more than a foot away staring at me and my daughter ringing up our things. A great place to go bulk shopping in my opinion. I enjoyed having to everything I need in one place with amazing prices and not having to deal with the "Walmart" people. I have been a loyal supporter and shopper at Winco Foods for several years. Today was my last shopping trip there. Although most of their customers were wearing masks in the store, I noticed very few of the workers were wearing one, and later found out it is not the store's policy to require their employees to wear a mask. The last straw was when during a public announcement regarding social distancing the attendant in the self serve line (who was not wearing as mask) went over to help a customer, with about a foot of distance between them, and leaned over his bags of groceries!This person also started handling the groceries (apparently looking for an item) no gloves either! This strikes me as VERY irresponsible to their customers! Count me out! read more

I LOVE Winco! Shopped there in Seattle and was super excited to see them popping up in AZ. I have a Family of 7 and I only buy my groceries there. Today however , I was denied my groceries because my check number was too low? I don't know what the heck they're talking about, I write checks every two weeks and for some reason the mgr today didn't like me. My check number was 636 I'm not sure how that's low , or why that matters at all? I asked them to put my stuff in the freezer until my husband could come pay with the debit card, but they can't hold it for more than 2 hours, and he will be at least 8. I was humiliated in front of all of those people, and when I asked another mgr, she said it wasn't store policy, it was just that guys decision. I am sad to say that I will no longer shop at this Winco , which means they're losing out on about $2000.00-2500.00 a month. That's was 3+ hours wasted. Smh read more

Winco is winco and I'm definitely not picky when it comes to grocery stores. However I'm never coming back to this place. I came to the store today, just wanted to try and new location. First time being here. I run in and grab my groceries maybe here 15-20 minutes. Normal winco selection and lay out. Self check out and leave. I get back to my car and it's vandalized. I'm not from here so I go in and they grab me a manager. She was extremely rude to me. Red wig, kind of dark red. Caucasian woman. She didn't want to help me locate a phone number for non emergency incident reports. Im not from here I don't know the protocol. She said snarky like "you can google it" she wasn't sympathetic at all. She checked the cameras and with a smirk came back and said no one touched my car. I waited an hour for the police to show and when they did I heard her colleague call for her as the officer and I walked in. You can clear as day head her on the walkie talkie "tsk no one even touched her car." Look if no one did fine. That's cool but have some respect for me as a person going through something right now. Please post signs you don't take credit cards! I was just treated so poorly that I will never shop here again! The cashier rang up my little order and I only had my credit card on me, I had no idea you didn't take them. She was very rude when I asked her to cancel the order. I volunteered to put the items back and she said just put them in the cart but continued to run her mouth about people spending on credit cards to the next customer. okay first off i actually like the 90's aesthetic of this place, idk why, it's just nostalgic. also, the coffee bean section smells AMAZING. i don't think i have ever been to a coffee bulk section anywhere else where it smelled so divine, so i bought some of that company's k-cups to see if i will buy the beans. more importantly they do have some great deals compared to Walmart or fry's. if you're a frugal person this is def a good option. read more

Life is so "go-go-go" these days, so it really takes a leap of faith and extra time on your hands to try something new... I usually make different shopping lists for the things I need & where to go- Started early one day and figured, what the hell, let's see what the deal is with this joint....oh my gosh! Are you kidding me?? I almost don't wanna reveal the secrets- But here goes: after I got through the 1st aisle, I wasn't really expecting anything better than a glorified 'fresh & easy' bc products were kind of in the delivery boxes instead of shelves....BUT --got to produce...I'm not a huge fresh fruit person bc I'm not up for the slicing & dicing and often disappointment of finding stuff that once home, just wasn't tasty, juicy & a pain to even consider returning. The prices were insane though! Grapes & bananas & pears & (you get the idea)...maybe 1/3 of Fry's 'on sale' stuff- I pretty much O.D.'d on clementines for a week-I never had them before, found myself taking 3-4 with me when I had to run errands..they've been having problems with them lately as I was told by the produce manager(Alissa)-when I spoke to her she was more than happy to replace items -she introduced herself and seemed truly dedicated to welcoming me & helping with my questions-awesome. The meat dept is pretty small but if you're looking for fresh fish- this is the place!! Salmon 4.89/lb!??! Seafood personnel also suggested "Swai", a non-fishy tasting fish- so ok, why not? So I buy several filets and never disappointed- try it broiled w lemon & basic spices- perfect! I'm getting better with my fear of the bulk food stuff- again: personnel awesome & super helpful! I'm a chocolate milk freak and easily can go through one of those giant sized nestle quick containers inside of a month- 2.2lb and nowhere in town is it less than $8 for that-BUT bulk??? 99 cents/lb!! And It tastes way better! Everything from cereal to pasta to candy - chocolate covered espresso beans, yogurt raisins- and every baking need you can think of. Granted, it's a pain in the butt- but I'll take that over paying 4-5x the price elsewhere. Don't bother trying to get the great deals/selection on non-food items, that's not their thing. Checking out and bagging your own stuff is just fine for me- I know what is in each bag and really don't find that the bags are nearly as flimsy as Fry's or ESPECIALLY Safeway. And I'm usually a double bag it all girl. Not needed here. It's an adventure, if you're up for it...this location, I've found, has consistently pleasant & helpful employees. The other location on the west side of I-17 on Bell: hit or miss. I've almost phased out Fry's, which I loved and will probably still buy my meats from, but at Fry's at Bell/17 I've found that when 'Judy' the manager has the day off the employees behave like children on the playground, not helpful & screaming from one end of store to the other. Just rude. WinCo is truly a tiny pearl that I'm glad I discovered! Thanks you guys! UPDATE 6/12/16: Good for bulk foods only now. Idk what happened, perhaps my visits that yielded the last review were a total fluke. The produce is really hit or miss, mostly miss. On 3 separate occasions I bought bags of the "cuties"/clementine oranges that were bad. They were literally hollow where there should have been juice--asked staff to replace and they said I'd have to bring the oranges back. Of course I don't have a bag of bad oranges hanging around the house, they were thrown in the trash. I guess nobody believed me. And no kidding some things are cheaper: big can of albacore tuna in water is more than $1.00 less there- but I'm kinda done with everything else. Grab my chocolate milk mix & tuna then split. I really appreciate this store. Great prices and very good workers. Produce is above average. Open 24 hours. They have a surprisingly large amount of vegetarian and vegan products. This place has restored a bit of my faith in grocery stores. I live in central Phoenix where the grocery offerings are of very poor quality. Stores tend to be smaller-format, very crowded at almost all times of day and night, and often have unstocked shelves of staples and popular items. After several bad experiences with spoiled dairy products from my local Walmart, I quit buying groceries there. Prices at Fry's and Safeway are quite high. But at the urging of a friend, I drove up to WinCo. Some things to know: WinCo is employee-owned. Profits don't go to stockholders, they go back into the company and to WinCo employees. Wages and benefits are good. WinCo accepts cash, benefits cards (WIC, SNAP) approved checks and debit cards. They do not accept credit cards. Walking the wide, well stocked aisles containing a large selection of grocery items and multiple brands of many items, one is reminded how shopping for food used to be, say, 10 years ago - even at Walmart. A disease called "SKU rationalization" has taken over many stores. SKU rationalization means stores reduce the number of items you have for sale. This means fewer choices of brands and sizes of products. Many of my favorites have disappeared over the years at Walmart. There's lots to choose from at WinCo. Several of the bad reviews are from people who visited right after the store opened. I'm certain there were glitches getting a new grocery store running. Also, the stores were very crowded for awhile, because they were new. On the recent Saturday I went, things were busy but completely manageable. The store has a large bulk area with everything from spices to supplements to candy to emergency preparedness items. Plenty of produce of acceptable quality and very good prices. Dairy also had a large variety of brands and items, many from the high-quality northwest U.S. Tillamook brand. Again, prices were great. They were usually lower than Walmart's and almost always cheaper than Fry's. WinCo is quite large, so be prepared to spend time getting acquainted the first couple visits. Also, they have a sort of one-way corridor entry. This may annoy people who want to dash in, but it also reduces energy costs and that crazy congestion you experience at the front of a Walmart and some Fry'ses. I got lactose-free milk for $2.40 a half-gal and English cukes for 80c. and 30c red bell peppers. Laura's Lean Beef was $2/lb less than Target. Tillamook extra-sharp cheddar was $3.40 a package. You bag your own groceries at WinCo. This is the norm for many groceries across the northern U.S., but never caught on here. It frees up employees to do other important things, like stock shelves and provide customer service, 2 things I know you know are lacking at most other groceries in Phoenix. They specialize in groceries, which means no home goods, no pharmacy and no photo lab, just good groceries. WinCo is definitely worth your time if you are a value and quality minded grocery shopper. read more

Mixed feelings on this place. While it's a giant store, with lots of variety, and some cool prices on organic stuff, twice now I've come home with products that were spoiled. Last visit, some lady was looking at the mayonaise selection, and pointed out to me that 3 she picked up were expired! YIKES! So, on the one hand there's some good stuff, it's large and fun to shop here, I question some of the freshness and integrity of the products. It's also very far from where I live, so I won't be making it a habit to continue to shop there. This is our neighborhood grocery store. Prior to moving to North Phx I'd never been to a Winco. ITS HUGE. I find it much easier to shop on weekday mornings/afternoons, rather then weekends. It kind of gets overwhelming on the weekends. Think Costco crowded when they have all of those stupid food samples out. (drives me crazy) Anyway, the deli has really good macaroni salad and the rotisserie chickens are like 3 bucks(!) You bag your own grocery's and they have paper bags :) that makes me happy. Like everyone has said, it is hit or miss. Some prices are great ( produce, bulk items, stuff like that) But other items, the prices are like WOW?! Are you kidding me. Massive. My husband described as a walmart version grocery store. They have some really good deals if you take the time to walk the store, and use the coupons (which are usually pretty good). The produce prices are fantastic and so is the dry goods, scoop your own area. 2.98 for raw almonds??! A steal! It's open 24 hrs, though this area is a bit sketchy at night. I don't think I'd go there late in the evening.Just something to keep in mind. I don't know how well lit the parking area is, so take my opinion on that with a grain of salt. I went on a weekend, and there was no line at the register I chose, though it was very crowded. They also accept manufacturer coupons, which is nice! Someone reviewed they don't accept cards? Not the case when I went..maybe that was a temporary glitch. I don't know that I can go there often; I get that costco anxiety. Do I really want to walk a mile for a gallon of milk and eggs? Tradewinds green tea by the gallon alone worth the trip but otherwise a massive grocery in former Sam's Club location, one of two fairly close by on Bell Road. Has a lot of everything, but in all that massive store, they don't have pimiento cheese spread. They do, to their credit, currently have at least a few pluots, that incredibly delicious apricot-plum hybrid, and those seem be hard to find! read more

Well, interesting! Kind of hard to find your way around in........and going really late at night means you contend with people trying to re-stock. I think that's better than dealing with other shoppers during the day though! Checking out was one person working only after midnight. All the staff was very nice, even when you knew they didn't want to be ;o) You have to pack up your own groceries like Fresh and Easy but I like this because I can do it my way......Prices on most things were pretty good! I got Alexia sweet potato tater tots for $2.69, which is cheaper than Sprouts I think. Waffle fries too......same price. Love Winco! Everything is so much cheaper, even meat. Great quality produce, meat and dairy. Waaaay cheaper than Target and a lot of the time Fry's. This location's baby section is Phenomenal and I find that their baby food selection FAAAAAAAAAR exceeds that of both the Target and Fry's in the area. You can buy in bulk here and they even sell inexpensive storage binds so that you are able to buy in bulk! They have a pretty substantial homegoods section. The entire store is super clean and I've never met an unkind staff member. That being said, they DO NOT take credit cards. So take note there! read more
