A HUGE plate that comes with two big pieces of pollock, chips, tartar sauce and a small side of Cole slaw. The fish is not bad. Good crunchy batter, not too heavy or thick, I would say on the light side. The pollock is fairly soft. The chips are just alright. Maybe below average, just frozen fries. It took a while to come out, they came back asked if I wanted more and I got an extra piece. That was fairly fast. The fried calamari we got for appetizer came fairly fast. I thought it was good. Very light batter. Nice and soft calamari. Now for the bad: - we saw mouse droppings. - my wife's lobster roll was "soaked in butter" and it really bothered her, she seems to really not like it - rest of my family said too much batter, didn't like the fish. Visited this spot on a week night and was pleasantly surprised! They have a $17.50 fish & chips all-you-can-eat deal from Monday to Wednesday until 8pm. The interior is minimally decorated and they weren't too busy, but had a steady stream of customers. The service was very friendly and attentive. They serve fried Alaskan pollock for the fish and we found the batter to be crispy and not overly battered, which was nice. The fries were pretty standard but tasted fresh. I really enjoyed the homemade coleslaw and tartar sauce. You are given 2 pieces of fish to start, and you can add 1 piece of fish at a time after that. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience! Came here with my friends for dinner and we were all super impressed! Their fish and chips are honestly some of the best I've had. The fish isn't oily at all. When we finished eating, the plate had zero grease. The fish itself is meaty, flaky, and tastes really fresh, and the batter is light without feeling heavy or thick. The fries are thick-cut, made from real potatoes, and perfectly crispy. We also tried their burgers and loved them. The brioche bun is soft and the fried cod inside is chef's kiss. A recent visit was terribly disappointing. Fish and chips used to be good here but based on this experience, no longer. Prices have skyrocketed (they have everywhere) but there's no value for money. I went with my granddaughter and we ordered one clam chowder and one halibut and chips "special" that was over $18. And they have the nerve to charge $3 for a can of pop with no glass or ice. Just a can of pop plopped down on the table. I'm an old granny and no fan of drinking pop from a can, especially during dinner. And for $3 I expect at least a glass, and maybe even some ice! Very weird service. Although there were clearly two of us, the server brought one set of cutlery and one napkin. So are things so bad that two people have to share cutlery? And one napkin? What? I actually had to go to the counter to ask for another set of cutlery and she seemed confused by the request. Also, horrible, loud elevator music! It was absolutely dreadful and seemed to be the same monotonous dopey tune on a loop. We had to ask that it be turned down and it was, very slightly. Who wants to listen to that crap when they're eating? Nobody even wants it in elevators, so what makes them think we want it when we're trying to relax and enjoy a meal? I thought the soup would come out before the F&C, and that's why I ordered it, so my granddaughter would get something to eat quickly. But it arrived when we were nearly finished the small pieces of fish (my gdaughter didn't even eat hers after tasting as she declared it "awful"). I could be very wrong and apologies if I am, but it seemed to me to be canned soup. If you've got chowder made and ready to go, why does it take so long to arrive at the table? Somebody had to open a can and hurl it into the microwave first? Yuck! It had a very "canned soup" flavour and texture and since gdaughter was put right off her food, I was the only one who ate it and left most of it in the bowl. I can open a can of chowder at home and it doesn't cost me $8 + tax. One order halibut and chips, one clam chowder, two cans of pop and it was $33+. No tip, I can tell you that, and I nearly always tip. There wasn't even a "thanks for coming in" or "see you again" or any friendliness from the server. We left feeling disappointed and ripped off. Had a hankering for fish and chips and wanted to dine in vs. pick up at my other favourite fins and chips place while in Vancouver. Read a few reviews that were mostly favourable for this place on Commercial Drive and when I got there it was shortly after noon and too my surprise it was still closed. The person inside noticed me outside and gestured for me to wait and several minutes later she opened the front door to let me in. She explained with Covid their operating hrs were approximate, so I would call in advance to ensure they are open if you decide to try them out I basically had the place to my own the whole time I was there so no issues with social distancing while dining, I order the two piece cod and it came with a generous portion of fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce. The cod was lightly battered and the cod tasted fresh as well as the coleslaw. The price was decent for the potions that were served, service was attentive and I will come back. Parking I suspect could be hard to find on the weekends as it is a busy street and area, there is free street parking about two or three blocks away if you look for it . The waiter was very courteous and professional. Reminded me of a cruise ship for some reason. Fish & chips are decently priced, in the $6-13 range (1-3 pieces). The batter was nice but also not too thick, and the fish was pretty juicy. The fries were also nice and crisp. The tartar sauce could've been "lumpier", but it was decent overall. There was also a side of coleslaw. The drink special was $12 for Raven beer this Friday. Can't go wrong there. It was nice of the waiter to suggest that instead of our original plan of 3 pints. Fantastic fish & chips, the batter is so crunchy. Their grilled chicken burger is very good as well. The environment is very pleasant and the staff are incredibly nice and welcoming, which is very refreshing compared to some of the newer (and ruder) restaurants around it. One of the last stores in this neighbourhood that hasn't been bought out, gentrified and yuppified. I hope everybody who reads this review decides to order from here at least once, because businesses like these that support the community (amazing prices) should be supported back. Service is always great! The ladies are so kind and even remember you if you are local. We live close by so anytime we need a quick and cheap meal or even better, a hangover meal, we pop by and grab some specials or even some calamari. You can ask them for take out and its packed up so perfect and they never forget the tartar sauce(they even remember to only gove one since i hate the stuff). He reckons it's going to be grand, so we made our way out for a drive down Commercial, no pun intended, in search of another promise for good fish & chips. It's a tiny, tiny establishment with about 26 seats in total. Not sure if it was a Sunday special but 3-piece cod & chips for $8.99? Sold. It's normally about double that, granted you do get larger pieces with the regular order. Service was incredibly slow as there seemed to have been lots of take-out orders. I began to wonder if they were going fishing back there in the kitchen. But when the cod & chips did make it to the table, they were actually quite nice. Crispy fish and certainly crispy chips! Not bad! It's not the most convenient place to get to and I'm not sure that it was enough for me to make special trips out here for the fish & chips, but if you are in neighbourhood looking for a decent plate, I would highly recommend stopping in. read more

There were four of us and we all had the special of cod and fries, one friend had the salmon, halibut and yam fries. I loved it! Amazing, and for that price you cannot beat it. For 8$ it was great value and we also had a couple of beers (decent selection on tap) and stayed and talked for a while. So, the staff was really sweet and nice and polite, and I didn't want to have to do this, but this is probably the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten, outside of a piece of shit side of the road three home town that is serving you cold McCain curly fries. Anything. My brother got a salmon sandwich which was passable but he took about a minute to eat it because that's the kind of guy he is, so I don't trust his tastebuds. My mother got the grilled halibut with bruscetta salsa and minted peas. Not minty. Hardly peay. The fish again, had no flavour to speak of. I am very sorry. Stopped by and tried the all day specials. There was the $7 three piece cod special and the $8 one piece cod and one piece salmon special. We also ordered a $5 clam chowder as a starter. Portion size was good for the price. The chowder was very runny and lacked richness and flavour. There was an okay amount of seafood and veggies. The batter of the fish was light and crispy. I did find it a bit bland and it can benefit from more salt or spices. Fish was moist and cooked perfectly. Fries were crispy and perfectly fried but also needed some salt and vinegar for more flavour. I guess that is why there are condiments on the side so you can season the food to your liking. The coleslaw had a light coat of dressing and had a refreshing tartness that I liked. Service was prompt. We were seated right away and had water given to us shortly. Food also arrived shortly after we placed our order. We did have to flag our server to refill our water. I have had better fish and chips elsewhere but I also had to pay more. If people want to try some amazing salmon fish and chips, I recommend Washington Avenue Grill. Ocean Avenue Restaurant, Pajo's, and Cockney Kings Fish and Chips have better tasting batter in my opinion. However, for a filling and very well priced meal, this place does the job. read more

It's a sleepy little spot on the north end of Commercial and it's never very busy, so if you want fish & chips in a hurry this is a great place to try. I ordered a three piece cod and chips meal for under $8, and it came with a bit of coleslaw on the side. I'm not sure if they offer any other kinds of white fish, so if you're looking specifically for halibut or haddock you may want to go elsewhere. I went to Windjammer's ages ago when it was on Main. I decided to try it again after I was reminded of it from Groupon. Hence, I bought the Groupon, and headed down with my family. The Groupon had great value, but unfortunately the food did not meet expectations. We got there fairly early, so our fries were refried, which made them super hard. Looking at the fish, it was not golden brown; it was more of a dark chocolate brown. It was overcooked in old oil; super disappointing. The waitress (possibly the owner) compensated by further discounting the food and trying to come up with viable explanations. The tables around us had better looking food, but compared to other fish and chip joints, the portions here were not as substantial. Asked for salad on one order and yam fries on the other, got fries on both but it was quickly fixed by giving us the salad and yam fries as well as fries. Brand new, this fish and chips haven moved from it's popular place on Main Street to Commercial Drive. That's another score for the Drive! As it should be, the fish batter was thin, flavourful and crispy. The fish however was a little too overcooked for my taste (I do prefer it on the raw side) but in all fairness, the fish slices were thick and flaky and my husband quite liked it. I should note we took it home, so the fish may have dried out in the process. The fries were slightly soggy as well. It was a nice looking joint with well-meaning staff members. The beer specials advertised outside looked fantastic too ($10 a pitcher). My husband commented that a lot of great local and international beers were on the menu. We will have to eat-in next time. I will not however have the french onion soup again. A somewhat burnt slice of bread covered a mountain of cooked onions. While the soup base was rather delectable, the processed cheese covering the soup detracted from its taste. Based on my limited experience, I will come back for eat-in fish and beer. I look forward to seeing this successful restaurant flourish for many more years on the Drive. People still need to find out about it, but I'm sure it won't be a secret for long. read more
