Good down home cooking, everything is made to order. The owners are some of the nicest kindest people you will ever meet in Kansas City. Very slept on restaurant in my opinion

The Borough is one of those places that you just have to root for. Located in the Marlborough neighborhood; the small multi-block row of underused or vacant buildings along The Paseo reflects a once bustling commercial area. Marlborough was once a small town in it's own right before being annexed into KC in 1947. The area has certainly seen better days, but with a business like The Borough might just be the spark to bring some vibrancy back to the neighborhood. They certainly seem to be the beacon and meeting point for the community. As soon as I walked in, I felt at home in the large space with lots of seating options, brick walls, plenty of things to look at, and a coffee, ice cream and full kitchen menu. I only ordered an iced Mocha but spent lots of time chatting with my barista about their coffee bean sourcing from Broadway Roasters and their involvement in the Caffeine Crawl. This week is their 3rd birthday and i'm really hoping that I win the guessing game so I can return soon and pick up that homemade pie they are giving away. The Borough at 80th and The Paseo may not be on most people's way anywhere, but it's certainly worth a visit to support their community spirit.

Love this place. Cute coffee and lunch spot. I come here on lunch breaks and it's a great place to eat. Food is cheap and delicious. I highly recommend the breakfast burrito for food. For drinks any of their flavored lattes or flavored lemonades. The menu has expanded a ton since last year. You order at the bar and they serve you at the table. Service is quick too if you're in a pinch for time.

Hey everyone, still new to KC - moved here in January with my family & still getting the lay of the land. Today, my husband & I decided to try a breakfast spot close to us called, The Borough. Right when we walked in, there was a Black man (this is important, bear with me) ordering with his wife. He was very polite, simply requesting his eggs cooked a certain way, & this young White woman taking his order seemed visibly annoyed. Yet, this same employee was extremely accommodating to us, going out of her way. I didn't even want eggs, & she offered me double ham, among other things. So we ordered & sat down. The man stepped outside to take a call. While he was out, their order came, & his wife noticed the eggs weren't prepared as he had asked. She kindly brought this to the waitress's attention, who just snippily replied, "If he has an issue with it, oh well, it is what it is - he can take it up with the cook." When the man returned, he saw the eggs & calmly brought his plate up to the register. He simply pointed to the eggs, not raising his voice at all, & asked if they could be remade. This is when the situation escalated. The waitress started yelling at him, "How DARE you have an attitude with me! I am NOT the one who cooked your food! If YOU have an ISSUE with it - you can take it to the COOK who is ALSO the OWNER & tell HIM!" The man, remaining calm, asked her why she was yelling & if he needed to record for their safety. She just went off again, shouting, "GO AHEAD & record me. We're also recording YOU & how you're acting & how you're treating ME! & we can post it ONLINE! Again, if YOU'RE having an ISSUE, you can take it up with the COOK who is also the OWNER!" So he walked over to the other counter area by the kitchen, & this very tall, lanky, older White man met him at the counter. The man showed him his eggs, & the owner's response was, "I don't know what you're upset about. It's not like I scorched the eggs. This isn't your mama's kitchen - I'm not remaking them." While this was happening, the waitress approached the man's wife sitting at their table & began to berate her, stating, "We serve the best food in this area, & we don't deserve to be treated like this. If you & your husband are going to be so unappreciative - eat somewhere else. You don't have the right to make us bend over backwards for your requests." His wife was quiet during the entire beratement. My husband & I were just stunned by what we were witnessing. When the man returned to the table with his wife, I asked if they were alright, just trying to open a dialogue. They recounted the events, & their account was entirely consistent with what we had both seen & heard. They decided to try & eat their meal. It was clear they just wanted to eat in peace. Our food arrived, & two out of three of my pancakes were significantly undercooked, the ham was barely warm, & my husband's burrito barely had any egg in it. I tried to eat the ham, but my appetite was gone. I was too focused on the hostile atmosphere directed towards the other couple. Then I overheard the waitress "venting" to this heavyset blonde woman who came out of the kitchen. She was saying, "A man came in here yesterday taking pictures of his 'ruined' order and asking to take pictures of other people's plates who weren't happy, threatening to post them - so we kicked him out. I should kick those two out too." I waited until the couple finished eating & told them about our food. I asked if they wanted me to say something & if they preferred to stay or leave before I did, because I was going to say something regardless. They wanted to stay. So I went to the front & said calmly, "Please don't get defensive about this, but we really didn't appreciate how you spoke to & treated them. It ruined my appetite & made them feel uncomfortable & unsafe." At first, she was acting like I didn't understand & if I heard her side, I'd agree with her, saying, "No, he was aggressive & yelled at me." I stayed calm & said, "No, you engaged in a microaggression where you raised your voice & tried to make him look like the aggressor." She stood up from her seat behind the counter & yelled, "I don't have to take this!" I started telling her our food was also bad, & she just turned and walked to a back room, yelling louder, "I DONT HAVE TO TAKE THIS! I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU!" I kept talking over her about her awful attitude. Then I told the couple to write reviews & share their experience publicly. As we were leaving, an older Black gentleman walked in, & I directly told him, "Don't eat here. They were mean & cruel to that couple because they're Black." Then we left. I think the reason she walked away from me instead of being aggressive like she was with the Black couple is because my husband & I appear White. He's Mexican, & I'm Native. If we didn't appear White, she 100% would have called the cops on us. (We just received the refund, so hopefully the couple did too!)

This cozy neighborhood spot is nestled in the Marlborough neighborhood. You can get coffee, ice cream, breakfast, lunch, view art, participate in a community coloring project or just meet up and hang out. They offer milk alternatives for the coffees and hot chocolate for non coffee drinkers. The owners are super friendly. This spot is inviting and inclusive. They close early so check hours before you go. Tip: order the tots they are crispy and crunchy the outside and soft on the inside.

My wife and I shared the meat lovers breakfast burrito and it was good size and filled with the filling. The sauce on top had a little kick to it but that could have been the veggies on top, but would get it again. Our friend got the breakfast enchiladas and said it was very good, she likes the green sauce over the red. I didn't personally try so I can't say how it was. My son ordered the traditional breakfast, and that's exactly what it was, but he liked it. The pancakes are the size of the plate and had a fluffy center and crispy edges. We did have to ask for more syrup because they were so big. The only reason it was not a 5 was because I felt the waitress could have been around more. I felt that since we had a group of 7 and the gratuity was already added she didn't worry about it. Our waters went empty and we had to ask a different waiter for more water and syrup, when she came over the water was warm and didn't have any ice. A kid spilled her syrup we went and asked for a rag and we cleaned it up which we expected but we had to flag someone down to see if she could get more syrup. I just felt she wasn't as attractive as she could have been. We went there on a Monday around 9:45, so it wasn't extremely busy. I would say that you should try it, it was good food!

This seems like a great spot to work from, although they also had a wonderful (windy) rooftop to sit on also.. that looked like it had a fireplace for chillier days- so cozy. Best coffee in KC.

To step through its threshold is to surrender to the siren song of warmth that curls from the oven like a whispered secret. I have made it my pilgrimage to traverse the entirety of their menu, a culinary odyssey that has yielded no false steps, only a symphony of consistency that borders on the miraculous. Each offering, from the flaky, golden architecture of their pastries to the robust, honest comfort of their savory fare, is a testament to the artisan's hand. Here, affordability is not a sacrifice of quality but a generous invitation, a rare confluence where the exquisite meets the accessible. There is a certain magic in the air at McLain's, a sweetness that feels woven into the very fabric of the establishment. It is a place that understands the language of comfort, speaking it fluently in the dialect of a perfect crust or the rich, dark notes of a expertly pulled espresso. It is perhaps no surprise that such a bastion of authentic delight has garnered a reputation that extends far beyond our local borders; if the standard of excellence is high enough to grace the plate of Taylor Swift, then surely, it is more than enough for us, the grateful residents who claim this treasure as our own. Yet, beyond the flour-dusted counters and the glowing glass cases, my deepest admiration is reserved for their spirit. In a world that often measures worth in cold, transactional metrics, McLain's chooses to honor those who pour themselves into the future of our community. As a teacher, I feel that recognition in the small gestures, the welcoming nods, and the genuine appreciation they extend to educators. It is a profound kindness, a recognition that the work of shaping minds requires nourishment, both intellectual and literal. They understand that a classroom is a marathon, and they act as the essential pit stop, providing the fuel that keeps the light of inquiry burning bright. To dine at McLain's is to participate in a ritual of belonging. It is a place where the passage of time is marked not by the ticking of a clock, but by the turning of the oven trays. It is a reliable heartbeat in the neighborhood, steadfast and true, offering a reprieve from the clamor of the outside world. Whether one seeks a quiet moment of reflection over a cup of coffee or a celebratory feast that honors the simple, profound joy of eating well, McLain's remains an unrivaled steward of taste. It is not merely a bakery; it is the living, breathing soul of Waldo, a place where every bite serves as a reminder that some things in this life are exactly as good as they ought to be.
