What a local favorite the Windmill restaurant. Sunday morning they open at 7am and there is already a line forming out front. The restaurant is straight forward. Bar stool seating, booths and tables. Everyone and everything is close together so be prepared. I suggest leaving the strollers, big jackets and purses in the car and come in light. You will be more confident. The restaurant decorations are Holland and Dutch very authentic and pleasing. The restaurant is clean, well lit and without stairs to get in your way. The restroom was clean and very small. Be careful when opening the door and wait in the hallway behind the door for your turn. My husband loves the farmers skillet. You are given a lot of breakfast food, cooked to perfection, seasoned and hot! I am a BIG fan of the homemade muffins and they go FAST! Blueberry is my favorite but the cinnamon is a close second. I also get a BLT on their homemade bread! I have not had one bad meal here yet. The staff is welcoming, the food so hardy and delicious definitely a perfect breakfast spot. Food was bland and the service was horrible. In fact as we were leaving we were asked not to bring my family back because there was 9 of us and they sat us in two Botha. 4 in one and 5 in the other. One in a chair in the middle of the walk way. Which everytime someone walked by you got hit in the back. The table was so small there was hardly enough room for our plates. the waitress got mad just because I asked to move a table in the back that came open and she got an attitude with me because I asked to me. My wife and I decided to try this place for breakfast this morning. We had to wait outside in the cold for 15 minutes and when we got in we ordered if we could share and Reagan said there was never a problem doing that, she'd bring an extra plate. We ordered the Windmill breakfast , a decaf coffee and green tea. Reagan took our order and asked if we wanted any meat with it and we said bacon. The service was fast, she brought three pancakes, four slices of bacon, and the coffee and tea. My wife and I looked at each other and wondered where the eggs were. We decided that maybe we read the menu wrong. We finished our meal. Reagan came back and asked if we wanted anything else and handed me a bill for $24+ dollars. My wife and I went for breakfast. There was a long line when we got there. The proprietor came out and ensured us that the line would move quickly. There were 10 people in line, but we were seated within 15 minutes. The service was excellent. It did not take long to get our food. If we had been in a rush, we could have gotten in and out within 30 minutes. The food was excellent. We decided to go back for breakfast again the next day. The owner came by and spoke with us after our meal. On our 2nd visit, he stopped by again and welcomed us back. He found out it was my birthday during our conversation. After we asked for the check, he came out with a pastry in a box with "Happy Birthday" written on it. It was a cinnamon roll. My wife and I shared it for dessert later that evening. They had me at fried cinnamon rolls. What is a fried cinnamon roll, you ask? Its a homemade cinnamon roll that is deep fried. It tastes a lot like an elephant ear. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The home fries were nice and crispy. I also ate some of my husbands toast, which was made with homemade bread. HOMEMADE BREAD!! They also have an epic collection of hot sauce. I'm talking 20+ sauces to chose from. If you visit Holland, check this place out. It's small and you may need to wait, but you should do it. Time for a 2022 update. The TLDR version: Windmill is still at it, they're taking the pandemic in stride, and they're as excellent as always! Stopped in this morning because why not. Folks can't wait inside for their table right now due to the pandemic (and it's a small waiting area anyway). Windmill is asking folks to line up outside the front door. As tables clear they let in the next in line. (PRO TIP: They have counter seating, and if you have the flexibility to use it it's often quicker to get seated that way. A handy tip indeed when the outside temps aren't cracking 20 degrees.) Be patient and know everyone is doing their best. Windmill's food is fantastic, but I get downright teary eyed over two things. First, you haven't lived until you've had *their* cinnamon roll. What's the secret? You can get it DEEP FRIED. But what I learned today is you can also choose traditional vanilla icing or CHOCOLATE icing (or half and half!). We went with a deep-fried half and half and never looked back. Seriously, it's like your taste buds just won the lottery. The second thing is that you can get your toast (I recommend their sourdough or wheat--all are homemade) with *cinnamon and sugar*. Just like mom used to make before you caught the school bus. So many fun things to discover. Ask your server what folks don't know about The Windmill and take their recommendations. Our server Rachel was a total pro. Kept the coffee topped up and the water glasses full. And I know we'd all love a lazy Sunday breakfast relaxathon, but please remember we're still living through the pandemic, Windmill's seating is limited, and there may be a line of folks outside freezing in the cold. A local favorite that I often overlook, Probably due to long lines. First impression was "oh it's a tiny, very noisy cafe." We were sat next to a table that felt like we were sharing the same space. Which was obvious upon seeing it and we could have waited and refused. The seats had tears in them that were noticeable to me. I am grateful for places that are locally owned and are part of family traditions. Which I think is why The Windmill is beloved. I Had the biscuits and gravy. It was good tasted like it should. Also had An order of sausage links . I didn't find them edible but my daughter had them and said they weren't as bad as I was making them out to be. So maybe my taste buds were just expecting a different flavor. Her fruit pancake roll up looked delicious and I assume other dishes would be fine. If you are staying downtown and want good basic diner food then I can recommend it. Some a la cart options help you choose less portions and make it more economical. This is a family run breakfast place in downtown Holland. I will eat here again IG I happen to find myself close to Holland. Firstly everyone is down to earth and friendly, easy to converse with. Secondly the hot sauce choices are amazing and as they ran down the list of options I had to laugh! I appreciate that they have a little something for everyone. After spending a few days in the Holland area on the way out of town, we stopped here for breakfast. There was a line on the sidewalk waiting g to get in. At first we were not going to wait but the line appeared to be moving so we parked the car (plenty of free street parking) and waited about 10 minutes for a table. It was worth the wait. I only eat eggs a few times a year but occasionally like an omelet and this was a good one, filled with ham, cheese, onions and peppers. Veggies were crisp but hot cheese melted perfectly and omelet fluffy. It came with choice of a biscuit, toast or a cinnamon roll. I usually eat something sweet for breakfast, (french toast, pancakes) so it was a win-win to be able to choose the cinnamon roll. The roll was excellent as well and huge, I took the majority of it home with me. My daughter had a breakfast sandwich, egg, sausage cheese that was also very good. We shared hash browns which neither of us were fans of. They were a bit greasy but the rest of the meal made up for it. It is an old dinner like setting with seating in booths and at the counter. Thin layer of egg over filled with veggies. It's not bad but I expected different lol. 2.hash browns. They were crispy on top and very very soggy on bottom. We ordered takeout from inside the restaurant since the line was super long. If you call they might not answer but you can just walk inside and talk to someone to order. We got the Patty Melt, cheese omelet, hash brown omelet and fried cinnamon roll (regular cinnamon roll but ask for it fried). - My dad raved about the Patty Melt and said everything about it was perfect. - The cheese omelet was mehh, it didn't have much flavor - even the pepper jack cheese which is my absolute favorite type of cheese. - The hash omelette was good although the actual hash brown part didn't have much flavor or salt. This iconic downtown Holland diner is always reliable for good diner standards. Their breakfast which is served all day is a stand out, especially the Eggs Benedict which I think are the best in Holland! Delicious light Hollandaise blankets a perfectly poached egg on top of a slice of ham and a toasted English muffin. My favorite! The hash browns today were a little greasy but still tasted yummy. If you are in Holland this is a go to restaurant for sure! I always come in early in the mornings to not get stuck in the line since they are always busy. Every time I've gone to eat breakfast I've had a good experience with great staff who are always so kind and give great service! Never have I come out upset out of this restaurant so I always enjoy going! My go to is the "Short French toast with strawberries and whipped cream on top with a side of bacon."
