They had me at fried cinnamon rolls. What is a fried cinnamon roll, you ask? Its a homemade cinnamon roll that is deep fried. It tastes a lot like an elephant ear. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we ordered. The home fries were nice and crispy. I also ate some of my husbands toast, which was made with homemade bread. HOMEMADE BREAD!! They also have an epic collection of hot sauce. I'm talking 20+ sauces to chose from. If you visit Holland, check this place out. It's small and you may need to wait, but you should do it. A local favorite that I often overlook, Probably due to long lines. First impression was "oh it's a tiny, very noisy cafe." We were sat next to a table that felt like we were sharing the same space. Which was obvious upon seeing it and we could have waited and refused. The seats had tears in them that were noticeable to me. I am grateful for places that are locally owned and are part of family traditions. Which I think is why The Windmill is beloved. I Had the biscuits and gravy. It was good tasted like it should. Also had An order of sausage links . I didn't find them edible but my daughter had them and said they weren't as bad as I was making them out to be. So maybe my taste buds were just expecting a different flavor. Her fruit pancake roll up looked delicious and I assume other dishes would be fine. If you are staying downtown and want good basic diner food then I can recommend it. Some a la cart options help you choose less portions and make it more economical. After spending a few days in the Holland area on the way out of town, we stopped here for breakfast. There was a line on the sidewalk waiting g to get in. At first we were not going to wait but the line appeared to be moving so we parked the car (plenty of free street parking) and waited about 10 minutes for a table. It was worth the wait. I only eat eggs a few times a year but occasionally like an omelet and this was a good one, filled with ham, cheese, onions and peppers. Veggies were crisp but hot cheese melted perfectly and omelet fluffy. It came with choice of a biscuit, toast or a cinnamon roll. I usually eat something sweet for breakfast, (french toast, pancakes) so it was a win-win to be able to choose the cinnamon roll. The roll was excellent as well and huge, I took the majority of it home with me. My daughter had a breakfast sandwich, egg, sausage cheese that was also very good. We shared hash browns which neither of us were fans of. They were a bit greasy but the rest of the meal made up for it. It is an old dinner like setting with seating in booths and at the counter. They had some stuff for sale in the front of the store, t shirts, candles, some artsy stuff, etc. I would recommend. read more

Time for a 2022 update. The TLDR version: Windmill is still at it, they're taking the pandemic in stride, and they're as excellent as always! Stopped in this morning because why not. Folks can't wait inside for their table right now due to the pandemic (and it's a small waiting area anyway). Windmill is asking folks to line up outside the front door. As tables clear they let in the next in line. (PRO TIP: They have counter seating, and if you have the flexibility to use it it's often quicker to get seated that way. A handy tip indeed when the outside temps aren't cracking 20 degrees.) Be patient and know everyone is doing their best. Windmill's food is fantastic, but I get downright teary eyed over two things. First, you haven't lived until you've had *their* cinnamon roll. What's the secret? You can get it DEEP FRIED. But what I learned today is you can also choose traditional vanilla icing or CHOCOLATE icing (or half and half!). We went with a deep-fried half and half and never looked back. Seriously, it's like your taste buds just won the lottery. The second thing is that you can get your toast (I recommend their sourdough or wheat--all are homemade) with *cinnamon and sugar*. Just like mom used to make before you caught the school bus. So many fun things to discover. Ask your server what folks don't know about The Windmill and take their recommendations. Our server Rachel was a total pro. Kept the coffee topped up and the water glasses full. And I know we'd all love a lazy Sunday breakfast relaxathon, but please remember we're still living through the pandemic, Windmill's seating is limited, and there may be a line of folks outside freezing in the cold. This is a family run breakfast place in downtown Holland. I will eat here again IG I happen to find myself close to Holland. Firstly everyone is down to earth and friendly, easy to converse with. Secondly the hot sauce choices are amazing and as they ran down the list of options I had to laugh! I appreciate that they have a little something for everyone. Now on to the food: it's breakfast comfort food, made just like you ask for on the over easy eggs, the coffee is good, you don't wait long after placing your order and you will wish for a bigger stomach. The food on the other hand was a little half and half. I order veggie omelet with Swiss add spinach and side of hash and rye bread. 1. Veggie omelet was not what I expected. Thin layer of egg over filled with veggies. It's not bad but I expected different lol. 2.hash browns. They were crispy on top and very very soggy on bottom. Made my stomach hurt really bad. 3.rye bread was soggy somehow. But I think it's just because of me getting take out and it's that styrofoam container. This iconic downtown Holland diner is always reliable for good diner standards. Their breakfast which is served all day is a stand out, especially the Eggs Benedict which I think are the best in Holland! Delicious light Hollandaise blankets a perfectly poached egg on top of a slice of ham and a toasted English muffin. My favorite! The hash browns today were a little greasy but still tasted yummy. We got the Patty Melt, cheese omelet, hash brown omelet and fried cinnamon roll (regular cinnamon roll but ask for it fried). - My dad raved about the Patty Melt and said everything about it was perfect. - The cheese omelet was mehh, it didn't have much flavor - even the pepper jack cheese which is my absolute favorite type of cheese. - The hash omelette was good although the actual hash brown part didn't have much flavor or salt. I think it contributed the most texture wise. - The fried cinnamon roll was what I expected, but the frosting was super sweet (and I don't think it was cream cheese frosting). - Side toast was pretty good, maybe a little above average! Every time I've gone to eat breakfast I've had a good experience with great staff who are always so kind and give great service! I've found that the amount of time spent waiting for a table is often proportional to how good the dining experience will be. Well this place was worth every second of the wait. A place that sold only these and coffee would make a killing in any downtown business district even in these wellness conscious times. I got the house specialty, a hash brown omelette. It sounded kind of odd to me but it's apparently a regional thing and I'm so glad I got this because it was fantastic! The hash browns were crisp and buttery. The eggs were soft and cheesy. Yum!
