Last night we went up for appetizers and drinks. Coconut shrimp was raw wasn't cooked and came out wet needed it to fried more. Fried Clams the batter had an odd taste. We live on Cape Cod, about 1 to 2 hours to Logan Airport. My wife was flying to Atlanta early. Snowstorm predicted for overnight and morning. Decided to go to Boston to stay overnight, making it easier to get to airport on time. Found The Winthrop Arms Hotel, 10 minutes from Logan. Best decision I've made in a while. Quaint 10 room hotel on the water in Winthrop. Rooms and bathrooms clean and comfortable. Also happens to have a great little restaurant and bar on the main floor. My wife likes to go to Atlanta to visit her daughter and grandson which usually means an early flight. I'll never get up at 4 am to make a 8 am flight again. Great food, great prices, warm atmosphere, clean, great cocktails, knowledgeable staff, newer menu has been developed to attract a more trendy crowd. Never a disappointment. The parking has always been a challenge and they have had valet parking for many years, but now there's a $5 charge! First time here, the food and the location were the best thing about our visit. The restaurant is super loud to begin with if your sitting inside the bar area or the dining room. Our waitress was at best "average" took a while for our first drink to come and for her to reappear. Seems like it is a "local hangout" which isn't a bad thing but for our experience we were left with not a great impression of the place. The appetizer we got was shrimp cocktail which was tasty and our main courses were great. Wish our server was a bit more attentive and quicker to our table. Ambiance 10. Unfortunately, my medium rare petite filet mignon was so gritty, over cooked and misshapen that it only took one bite for me to be disappointed. The week prior, we sat next to another couple whose steaks were beautifully presented and nicely done...I asked them. I'm new to the town, and trying out all the restaurants. Perhaps this one prepares brunch and their well known chicken pot pie in a more consistently acceptable manner. On a side note, it's been quite a long time since I've been served a room temp to cold baked potato and asparagus so tough that even I couldn't eat it. Vegetables are what can redeem a meal when properly prepared and could have more than made up for the inedible filet mignon. So disappointing to return home hungry after dining out. read more

This probably isn't a true review as this is from Mothers Day. Set menu with absolutely NO differentiating. My daughter and grandson have food allergies and they would not sway one bit. Granted, we weren't aware that it was a fixed menu on Mothers Day, so, we accept some of the blame. But come on! The only thing my daughter could eat was a salad. They had roasted turkey on the menu so she asked for some on her salad. NOPE! So, she had to order the whole turkey dinner plus her salad and put the turkey on her salad. The stuffing, potatoes and squash couldn't be touched because of her allergies (actually, the baby's allergies, she nurses him). My youngest granddaughter ordered the chicken fingers and French fries off the kids menu. My middle granddaughter ordered the chicken pot pie but asked to substitute the mashed potatoes with the French fries....you'd think No big deal, since they made them anyway for my younger granddaughter! NOPE! Another mound of wasted potatoes. To top it off, after our meals were delivered, we realized that there was no silverware on the table and had to go to work the waitress station and retrieve our own. My wife and I have lived in town for a while. This was our first time going here as we had seen it constantly packed every nite (prior to Covid). The food was absolutely fantastic. We go to capital grill a lot and the items we got steak and salmon are on par with any expensive place. I had a margarita that was perfect and their wine selection was good also. I worked with manager/event planner for a family event, and while the service with wait staff and food was all wonderful to good, working with the manager was less than stellar. Read your contract carefully as the cost kept changing. I was first told I paid per person (per head) and then I was told there was a flat fee amount I had to pay for no matter how many guests attended which added $300 to the total amount if not more. They didn't credit me any of the unused alcohol (we are not drinkers) from open bar. They will charge you for bartender services even if your event is no alcohol event and don't need booze served. I felt pressured into this and even though we didn't come close to spending what they allotted for alcohol, they could have credited us, and they didn't. Read your contract front and back. The manager also was impatient and sometimes down right rude with me: the event planner and host. I would go again for a meal but I would never hold an event here again if I had to work with this manager. I give it a one star for management and five for the professional and kind wait staff. read more

The thing that struck us most was that everyone, both staff and guests seemed to know each other - like being in a small town. The restaurant is part of an old hotel, with some nice original features. The printed menu is updated with all the right culinary words, but the food is basic second-tier steakhouse fare from the 1960s. We found the Blackened Salmon and Lamb Chops quite well prepared, but plated with sides put together with no care at all (the rice that came with the salmon was sour and soupy, with some spinach stirred in - almost inedible). I kept imagining Gordon Ramsey doing this place over, including the fits he would have as he ate his way throught the menu. Great staff, classic environment, but food that just goes through the motions. If we stay at the hotel again (it's a delight, if dated), we'll still dine here (since there are few options nearby), but we'll just have the burger. read more

Had a great experience here last night with a party of 5 which included my 8 year old son. Loved that they have a steak on the kids menu. I had the New York strip and stuffed scallops combo. I ordered the steak medium rare and it was a perfect medium rare. With two sides it is a good value. Love that salad that you can choose. Everyone was happy with the meals and my son loves the warm chocolate chip cookies with milk as a dessert. Cocktails are well poured. Great experience and I look forward to coming back. read more

If I could rate 0 stars, I would. What horrible and unprofessional service. I've never been this dissatisfied with a restaurant and their manager. I was to have my babyshower here in the dining room and made a reservation for a buffet about 2 months prior. 5 days before the shower, I got a call from the manager stating that there is no buffet which is understandable but I should've been informed or this the second they stopped doing buffetts for dining room. Then 3 days before my shower, the manager calls me up again to tell me he gave the room I reserved to another family with more guests! He didn't work with me at all, simply said he can't do anything about it and tried to push my family into a small porch. He was extremely disrespectful and ignorant. He didn't understand that I had a guest list of 25-30 and more people were still getting back to me. He said I either take the small room or go somewhere else! So you know what? I did! I found another restaurant filled with friendly, beautiful people, who I was more than happy to pay, than some stingy crook! The food was 10x better and cooked fresh-unlike the frozen bland food they serve at the Winthrop Arms. Everyone on my guest list heard about this manager and all agreed he was compeltly in the wrong, and that none of us will ever go back to the Winthrop Arms. Also, all the staff at the new restaurant I reserved, heard about what Manager Casey did to me. They were all absolutely disgusted by his dishonestly, unprofessionalism, and rudeness. Do not try to book an event here because reservations do not mean anything! The manager will screw you over for more money intentionally. He will not give you a proper apology and you'll end end up in my situation, where you need to find a new venue last minute. I hope the owners of this restaurant can higher another manager who is more responsible and good-hearted, so this doesn't have to happen to anyone else. He almost ruined my babyshower. Well I live just around the corner from here and have only been in about 4 times in 3 years. Twice I went for dinner and have been sadly disappointed at the offerings I have received. I work in this industry and the lack of anything really worthy of enjoying is a shame. I have heard about the food here as being a must try. Maybe a great place for a drink . AMAZING!!! Casey, the entire family that owns the Winthrop Arms and everyone that works there are amazing. This place really is like a home away from home. It is the "Cheers" of Winthrop. Truly. My sister and I stayed there for almost 4 weeks while our father was in the hospital and from the first night we arrived, we were made to feel like we were at home. Being able to stay at the Winthrop Arms during that period made all the difference. Every night, we returned back to the hotel, we were greeted with warm smiles as if we were part of the extended family and we ate the incredibly food. This is a truly a special, family-run hotel. We love heading to Winthrop with friends to try different restaurants. This was our first time at the Arms. The waitress, Cheryl-Anne was so nice and attentive. The food was delicious from my Bud Lights (the coldest most delicious beer) the clam trio through my strawberry shortcake. I had the lamb chops excellent! We packed up our leftovers to look forward to tomorrow. When we got home we realized we left our leftovers at the bar when we had our after dinner drinks. Thank you! We met Casey, the owners son. They have altered their entire menu and it's not good. As usual they ran out of prime rib at 6:30pm as well as corned beef and cabbage at 6:30pm on St Patrick's Day. Seriously. I ordered the baked stuffed shrimp. They took a few cocktail shrimps and threw some breadcrumbs over them. Tough and tasteless. Steaks were gritty. Salad no longer comes with the meal. Stuffed mushrooms were tiny and ice cold. The complaints could be heard throughout the restaurant. I stayed here and ate here recently. The menu in the restaurant was different from the one in my room. The waitress said the one in the room must be the old one. Anyway, I wanted the baked scrod from the old menu and she said they'd be happy to make it for me. And they did, and it was amazing. Very nice place overall. I haven't been to the Winthrop Arms in years, but it has changed. The food was horrible. I ordered the Broiled Scallops and Shrimp special, it didn't mention that it had Haddock with it. They must have been trying to get rid of the haddock, my meal came out cold, the fish wasn't cooked, the shrimp was old and tough. Had to ask the waiter to send it back and heat it up, by the time it came back out my dinner companion had finished. The fish was terrible, left all of it and told the waiter that the meal was not good. When I asked for the check, it took awhile for the waiter to bring it, the bill came to just over $93.00, gave the waiter a gift card for $75.00 and $40.00 cash. Without asking he assumed that the bill was being split and returned the card with a balance, and now he is looking for his tip. When it was explained that we wanted the entire gift card used and the remaining money left after the bill was paid would be his tip. Took at least 10 minutes to get this across to him. Never will I step foot in that restaurant again. What the father had built up the kids have managed to destroy. So sad, don't waste your money as there is nothing good about this restaurant nor is it cheap! read more

Worst dining experience EVER!!! We were a large group saying goodbye to friends who are moving away I wish I had the names of the waitresses but I'll just go by shirt color. Our waitress in the black shirt was good. The one in red didn't want to be there you could tell by all the facial expressions she was making. I ordered a filet, medium rare, it came out medium and dry. I sent it back to have them cook me a new streak. The red shirt waitress brings it back to me and tells me they cut the center and told me it is medium rare. I said I was the one who cut it and it is dried out. She leaves in a huff. I'm sitting there waiting for a new steak to come out and the waitress tells me they are not cooking me a new steak. REALLY!!! You are not going to correct your mistake? Then when they are cleaning dishes off the table after everyone is done eating they offer to get me something. Unacceptable!! Then she tells other people at the table that the OWNER will not allow them to cook another steak for me for it is to expensive piece of meat. Then I hear the waitress is calling me a BITCH!! Maybe they need to have a customer service training at this restaurant. Then to top off the evening a dog comes out of the back into the dining room. Can someone say Board of Health issues. A seaside treat not to be missed! This restaurant is located in an old hotel that also houses tourists looking for quaintness. I bet they found it here! Cocktails were first rate, served in the lobby by a charming man (the owner's son) while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive. Once inside, we were served a house dip with crackers (free) that was great. The Caesar salad was tops as an appetizer, but the croutons were boring. For entrees, my friends took the advice of our server, Josalin, who was a howl and highly knowledgeable about the menu, wine, and cocktails. Great service! Fried clam appetizer, lobster casserole, filet mignon, and Prime Rib were suggested, and were perfect ideas. Everyone was greatly pleased. Another suggestion was a bottle of Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, which was dry, crisp, and delicious. I ordered Blackened Salmon that was extraordinarily fresh, juicy, and cooked to perfection. The house fries as a side were a hit with all. This spot is a local fav, and would have gotten a 5th star but for the lack of valet parking on a stormy night. We used to visit the Arms all the time; probably a couple of times a month. The last time we went my son was home for the weekend and couldn't wait to go to the Arms. It was a weeknight so the place was pretty quiet. When they gave us the menu, I was taken aback as it was so different from the one we were used to seeing. I asked the server if it was a different menu because of a weeknight, but she said no and that this was the new menu. Well, the selections were definitely limited and some of our favorite items were not listed. We figured that it must cost too much money to keep all that inventory from the previous menu especially if business is slow. In any event, we were disappointed and I doubt we will return. Although I've tried most everything on the menu, my very favorites would have to be the chicken pot pie, the macaroni and cheese (from scratch) and the potato pancakes that are served at Sunday brunch. The service here can vary but, the owners and their son do a great job of running the place and solve any issue that may arise quickly. Drinks here are good as well with a large selection of martinis. The place is old school classy with dark wood accents and a beautiful lobby. We were a party of 40 last night for a sit down dinner... everything was wonderful, the food, the servers, the drinks, the ambience. Everyone said how much they enjoyed their meals.....We had three choices, Chicken Limone, a full turkey dinner (real turkey!!) and fish. A big shout out to Dianne and Darlene, great job girls. Two bars were opened, we went to lobby bar, which was handled by Casey, he was fast, efficient, friendly, and he certainly knows how to make a good stiff drink !!! First I'd like to say that I came here 2 months prior and had one of the best prime ribs ever. This visit tonight was absolutely terrible. We were 4 adults and 2 children. Our waitress misheard much of our order. Brought out red Zinfandel instead of sangria for wife's drink. Her steak tips were well done and charred instead of medium. It was sent back and returned with the wrong sides than the dish that was sent back. My daughter received squash instead of mixed vegetables. 2 prime ribs were over cooked and skimpy and fatty. Another side on one of them was wrong. Huge bones made up most of the weight. Not worth $40 each. What a joke. Pitiful. They were flat out disgusting and inedible. See pics of what we left of them. The last time I got the prime rib it was deliciously massive and looked like a Flintstone's steak. Owner's son/manager came by and was not apologetic. Did nothing to correct anything.
