Its been a couple of years since I've been to the arms ( they did not want to accept my American Express card) I heard it has changed there so being a Winthrop resident (just a walk away) Me and my wife thought we would give it a try. July 9th we went there and sat right away it was 6:30pm and there was people at 4 or 5 tables so it wasn't crowed we sat there for about 15 minutes and some other people came in and were seated next to us WE still have not seen the waiter yet but as soon as these people sat the waiter brought them over crackers and other things and we are still waiting a waitress asked if we were being taken care of and we said no then the hostess came over and asked us the same thing so another 5 or 6 minutes go by and still nothing so we got up and left and not one word was said to us my wife left the hostess with the people working here are very rude So I still never got to find out if they are giving people a hard time when using American Express Bruce Anderson Winthrop,ma read more

Brunch crepes came out cold. Where was the potato pancake? Replaced by cold chunks of well seasoned breakfast potatoes. I was with a large group so didn't want to cause a commotion and send my meal back. One of the cold crepes was burned on the edges. But, our waitress was lovely. The owner kept turning the music up so we couldn't have conversation, and she kept turning the it down for us. No complaints on service, and the chicken pot pie I got to go was the best. I've never had such a fantastic pie. It made the entire dining experience worth the cold meal. I would give the brunch 1 star, and the chicken pot pie to go, 5 stars. read more

came here on easter sunday party of 3 after reservations was screwed up at another near by restaurant. the host was very accommodating and was understanding even tho they were very busy but got a table ready asap and ill be honest just doing that on a special day meant a lot to me. food was delicious fried clams app, surf and turf and the apple crisp for dessert. service was great. the atmosphere is very old school vintage and it has nostalgia feeling. ill be back soon read more

For many years this has been and continues to be a beloved restaurant. The arms--is located on the ground floor of the Winthrop Arms Hotel (a small B&B). The lobby retains its early 1900's vintage charm from when Winthrop was a resort destination for wealthy Bostonians for the water and sea air--almost feel like you will see girls in tea dresses coming down the stairs or perched around the lobby sneaking gin. The food is American primarily, a selection of fish and steaks and lots of comfort food via the chicken pot pie (a cult favorite was formerly only available once or twice a week) and the mac and cheese. Most recent visit was April 2017 for dinner with a out of town cousin on a busy Friday night, all was very good the food and the service. And the owner, Mr. Goll calls everyone "doc" and they call him "doc" back -- no idea why but it's always been that way. Sort of a small town thing. read more

Took a friend who was in from out of town. Now, I haven't been to the Arms in several months, but you could always be sure of having a very good meal. First off, the new menu is very limited and missing some pretty basic (and I am sure favorite) menu items: baked stuffed scrod? Also, you are no longer given a salad with the meal and the sides are limited as well. I was just so disappointed in the menu, but I did find something on the specials menu which was appealing though a bit skimpy. I hate to say it, but I won't be running back any time soon. I have been here many times and I always thought the ambience and food was great but tonight was very different. We had reservations for a party of 16. From the second we sat down it was obvious that the waitress was not happy to be there let alone to be serving us. She made faces she threw the menus at us she confused the orders. being nice people that was all laughable except she didn't laugh and in fact she made faces and was not sociable interactive or pleasant. to put the icing on the cake my friends $40 steak was overcooked and they refused to replace it. I should mention that as we were leaving a dog exited the kitchen then the kitchen staff chased him and returned him to the kitchen. Said waitress said the mgr was coming over but then we were told "the cost of the meat is too expensive to replace". read more

Great service, food was awful never go to this place on a holiday, started off when the server told us that the prime rib was only to be served medium well, followed up with no butternut squash. Waited 45 mins to be seated, go seated at 4:48 pm, walked out at 7:20. While the wait staff was pleasant, the food was horrid. In particular, I was served room temp and dry/tasteless stuffed mushrooms app served on a piece of visibly badly rotted -not wilted- decaying almost black lettuce, followed by a soggy, truly awful Caesar salad that was simply not edible. No one in our large party seemed impressed by their entrees, including my husband who is not picky at all. I would never eat there again. Our next family get together will NOT be there. read more

Being new in town, I've been asking friends and neighbors for good restaurants nearby. Most of my neighbors love this place so, I stopped in. The decor is classic and traditional. You almost feel as if you've stepped into the Titanic dining room! Waitstaff is largely mom types that are quick to bring you what you need. No snotty 20 year old actresses here. The food. My gosh, it's so good. I got good Ole Mac and cheese. Clearly honemade, not orange and smothered in butter with totaled breadcrumbs. It was so good, I wanted to lick my plate. Don't worry, I didn't! My boyfriend got the chicken pot pie with a side of mashed. Again, clearly homemade, creamy lumpy buttery potato. The pot pie had perfect flaky crust and loads of white meat chunks. Where do I start? WORST experience ever!!!! We Ordered two steaks both medium rare, both came out medium well. We kindly said that was not the case WITHOUT even touching either dish, however, the owner came out, huffing and puffing, informed us that in no way that he could afford to make two other steak dishes for us to our liking. He basically stood there trying to sell me on how delicious the steaks were, the aging process, who cares?...that was not my point. We did not touch the steaks just in case if we did, we did not want that used as an excuse not to have the dishes re-done to our liking. He went even further to say he did not raise the animals themselves, he does not know what to tell us...WTF??? does that have to do with our steaks not being medium rare or delicious or the fact that he was trying to ram down two steaks that we were not pleased with. He would not leave our table until we actually tasted them. WORST customer service. Then again, not a high end Boston restaurant...I take that back....ANYWHERE else in Winthrop, when a customer is NOT satisfied with their meal, the owner makes sure THEIR customers are ALWAYS heard and satisfied!!!! Common rule. Period. A Filet Mignon is supposed to melt in your mouth........uhmmmmm.....think again, not that one!!!! A New York Sirloin is not supposed to look like rubber. And no, my steak was NOT delicious because it was not cooked like I asked. My boyfriend's Frenchie LOVED what I brought her!!! She thanks you. I hope mgt monitors Yelp. Dave wasn't there. Service was lacking. Hostess was MIA and bartender told us to sit anywhere. Waitress came by dropped to menus on the table and walked away without saying a word. Didn't ask us if we wanted drinks. Bus girl dropped 2 glasses of water on the table, and went and cleaned another table, again, not saying a word. I told my b/f I wanted to find a table that the pretty young blonde was servicing, because she was paying attention to all her tables and our waitress was just hovering around 1 table. Let me confess, we are not "regulars" there, we're occasionals. We got the attention of a different waitress and asked her to find ours for us, she was great, brought us our crackers and cheese and went to find her. Came back and said she would be helping us. I asked if she meant for the whole dinner, or just for apps, and she said the whole dinner. We got drinks, ordered apps and waited, and waited , and waited. They finally came but by then we figured we'd have to be in for the long haul. Very slow for a half empty restaurant. Oh, and the 2nd waitress brought us the specials menu, which the disappearing waitress neglected to leave. Had our drinks, ate our apps and left. Dave, don't take a night off, our $50 tab was about 1/3 of what we would have spent. i go out to eat quite often and have been going to the winthrop arms for at least 20 years. went back after being away a couple of months due to mom being ill and was shocked. the son took over and there is hardly anything left on the menu and too boot the wine i always get which was $19.00 a bottle went up to $42.00. prime rib is now $40.00 and for the king cut $50.00. i asked the kid where do you think you are in boston with the new prices. do you know his answer was "where can you get prime rib in winthrop" nice answer. he also stated that other restaurants around serve and this was his word "shit" and he buys the best meat. yeah right. well i will not be going there anymore and owning a business and dealing with a lot of people on a daily business i will tell them not to go there. also, no more salad or soup with your meal everything is now a la carte. this kid is going to ruin a great business his father built. i wish i didn't have to give it any stars and he even said if you don't like it don't come back and my answer was "i won't"!!!!! read more

My wife and I got engaged there 25 years ago and figured we would go there last night with another couple and would not go back there again. The place was not that busy and the waiter took forever to bring us anything. I had ordered the double stuffed baked pork chops with scallop potatoes and squash. When I cut into the pork chops they were not cooked all the way (raw) and my wife's and my scallop potatoes. The waiter never come back to check on how everything was and I had to grab the person that seated us to let him know about my meal. He took my meal back and asked if I wanted another order or something else. Seeing everyone that I was with was almost done with there meal I ordered the ground sirloin with cooked onions and a side of gravy (figured it would be quick to cook). The owner was walking by our table with another couple and stopped over to said he was sorry about the meal and then walked away. The waiter brought out my meal 25 minutes later with onion rings and no cooked onions. I mentioned that I did not order the onion rings and that I had ordered cooked onions. He did not offer to get me any cooked onions and only said that they told him to give them to me. After finishing my meal the waiter came by and asked if we wanted to order any deserts and when we said we were all set he left us the bill and never mentioned anything about the pork chops. The other couple we were with were not happy that charged for the chop sirloin. The bill came to just over $125 not including the tip and my friends and I would not recommend going there because you don't get what you pay for. read more
