Loved this place! The staff were great and their cocktails are killer! They make great use of the small space and the atmosphere is so friendly. Wish we would have been able to stay longer as this was our favorite bar of the weekend. The Blueberry Gin Martini was delicious and the Strawberry Berry Basil Lemonade was so refreshing!

Wise Men Distillery is based in Kentwood but they now have this new tasting room in downtown Grand Rapids, right on Monroe Center. Nate and I stopped in for a drink before a show recently and had a great experience. We only had time for one drink but the bartender was attentive and helpful when asking for recommendations. As others have mentioned, the space itself is pretty tiny and can only accommodate 24 people (which would be a super tight squeeze). Luckily there were only a couple other parties there when we stopped by. I believe they still do to-go drinks, which is a nice option if it's too packed inside. The menu is pretty large, with bourbon, gin, whiskey, vodka, and rum cocktails, as well as their own canned seltzers. Prices range from $12-$15 per drink, which is pretty standard these days especially in the downtown area. The bartender gave us a happy hour menu that listed $8 cocktails, which is a great deal. I decided on the raspberry seltzer based on the bartender's recommendation, and Nate got the Fizz & Fire: gin, house-made habanero simple syrup, fresh lime and pineapple juice, topped with soda. The drinks were great! I loved the seltzer - it had great raspberry flavor and wasn't overly sweet or medicinal/artificially flavored. At 6.4%, these vodka-based seltzers pack a bit of a punch. They sell 6 packs at the tasting room in all flavors: lime, blueberry, raspberry, watermelon, black cherry, and peach. I'd definitely try more of them in the future. The Fizz & Fire was lightly sweet with a bit of a kick from the habanero, but it wasn't super spicy to us. I loved how refreshing it was, with a little bit of a tropical feel from the fresh juices. I really enjoyed our experience at Wise Men Distillery and would love to go back and try more drinks from their extensive menu with 37 options to choose from!

Respect Your Elders

What a great way to end the night--outstanding cocktails made by knowledgeable bartenders/mixologists. If you're unsure what to order, put your trust in their suggestions. With just a few questions about your likes and dislikes, they'll set you up with a drink that is sure to please. I ordered a Key Lime Pie (drink) made with vodka that was not too sweet or tart and quite delectable. Next I wanted to try something different, and based on what I told the bartender, she suggested their Respect Your Elders cocktail (pictured) which is gin-based. It's got a completely different flavor profile from my first drink, but is absolute perfection as far as my taste buds go. My husband ordered a smoked old-fashioned with gin and raved about how good it was. The bar itself is cozy and inviting--a place to nip in and have a quick drink on your way to or from somewhere, or to settle in at the bar to relax and sip slowly on an old favorite or branch out and try something new. You'll enjoy your time here!

This is a teeny tiny place that is obviously meant MOSTLY for to-go beverages. They have a pretty extensive menu for such a small place and it's a really nice, modern, little spot. There are a handful of seats at the bar and another handful of seats scattered at a few small, high top tables. The bartender was great. Service was as expected for how busy she was. The prices are not cheap! Two cocktails out the door was $25. But they were delicious! "Respect your Elders" and "Key Lime" were both phenomenal drink choices. Big complaint: the floors were disgustingly sticky. So gross.

Intimate location with fast, great service. Drinks were tasty and reasonably priced. They allow you to take drinks outside to the social zone. The place is woodsy with leather seating, and two tvs; one of which plays Bob Ross :) Being that it's so intimate (24 persons allowed) and located right near Rosa Parks circle, they have no dedicated parking lot. Street parking or a garage is your best bet.

SERVICE: 5 FOOD QUALITY: N/A DRINK QUALITY: 5 ORDER TIME: 3 AESTHETICS: 5 NOISE LEVEL: 5 MENU SELECTION: 5 OVERALL EXPERIENCE: 4.67 We have been staring at this space for over a year now. We went to art prize this weekend, and it was finally open. It's a very small space, but has this warm rustic feel with barrel walls, and wooden counters. The bartenders were very nice, and said hello as we entered. The bar was crowded with the mass of people out looking at art. We ordered the fog cutter, which is a unique cocktail to wisemen, and it was absolutely delicious. It was so good that I decided to order other drinks to test their menu. I ordered a key lime pie to compare. Key lime pie was like heaven. I felt like I was in key west. The graham cracker rim was genius. Everything on the menu looked good and I'm looking forward to going back. My only complaint was that we ordered the second cocktail and we never got it. Sat there for 20 minutes before finally asking for the check, and it had the cocktail on the check. Due to the high volume they forgot to make it, but added it to the check. The bartender apologized, and made it for us to go though. Overall this place has something unique and are making some quality cocktails. If you're looking for something small, and new then don't miss this place. My only concern is that the small space isn't going to be good for business if they are always that busy. Will eventually need to upgrade and get more bartenders so that they don't lose business from forgotten drinks and diminished service.

Great vibes, small and intimate venue with great friendly staff. The drinks are delicious and reasonably priced.

The convenience of this spot when you're downtown around Rosa Parks circle is a real selling point! (Especially with to go cocktails!) The drinks aren't especially boozy, and a little bit pricey (which is expected for craft cocktails!) but they're tasty! Plus, the bartenders were very sweet and helpful!Definitely worth a stop at least once!

If you want a good drink, this is definitely the place to go! I happened upon this lovely, local, quaint bar. It's small so hopefully you're able to grab a spot because it's totally worth it. The vibes are chill and this is a place everyone can enjoy! Now let's talk about these drinks- they are sooo good! They're well made with a nice kick. Makes you want to sip and savor. The menu is expansive. If you're in the area, this is the place. Definitely recommend.

Are dogs allowed?

Unforunately, no. It's a very small location with seating for 15-20 people, and no outdoor seating. Although, you can have them put a 'drinking distrcit' sticker on your drink and then roam around the area with your dog and drink.

One of my friends and I ordered the Gentle Tussle cocktail, which came with rose petals. While it looked beautiful, we found it very difficult to drink and didn't enjoy the flavor. I understand that cocktails can be a matter of personal taste though so others may feel differently. For my meal, I ordered the brick chicken which is a grilled chicken thigh with potatoes and green beans. The chicken was a little underseasoned and undercooked, the potatoes were unfortunately not fully cooked either, and the green beans had a flavor that seemed off. Overall, I had a very poor experience with the food this time around. The highlight of the evening was our server, who was friendly, attentive, and did a great job throughout our visit. He recommended the cocktail, and while it wasn't for me, I appreciated his service and hospitality. I'm hoping this was just an off night because the server did tell me that the day I went was the first day with their new menu. I'd be willing to give it another try in the future, but I left feeling pretty disappointed this time around.

Sadly, I went to The Knickerbocker wearing jeans and not my baggy trousers. New Holland's place is…read moreright on Bridge Street, so it's right in the heart of things. For drinks, I had the Dragon's Milk S'mores on tap and the S'moregasm cocktail. For such similar drinks they were wildly different. At 11% ABV the beer was quite strong and I really didn't taste the "s'more" flavor. Meanwhile, the cocktail was super sweet as expected. New Holland has a solid line of beers so you can't really go wrong, but I don't think the S'more flavors worked on tap. Everybody debates whether pineapple should be on pizza but how about mustard?! So I had to try the seasonal Chicken Cordon Bleu pizza and it was delicious! It had cut up fried chicken, ham, and different types of cheese along with scallions and of course mustard. Somehow, they made this work! Service was also great despite the crowds but my only real negative was that they sneak a credit card charge onto the bill and hide the notice at the bottom of the menu. That doesn't fee transparent when businesses do that but otherwise, we enjoyed our time at The Knickerbocker.

Ordered buffalo wings and double cheese burger…read more Start with the wings. Buffalo flavor was standard. 0 crisp on the wings, on top of that the chicken itself seemed to be lower quality. I could see after having a few beers these might have seemed good, but sober they were not it. Double cheese burger was smaller then I anticipated. Beef was well seasoned and had a good taste. Bun was generic. My real issue was the veggie on it. My lettuce had brown/black tips. My tomato was soggy. The pickles had no crunch to it, they were tough to bite through. Fries that came with the burger were also not my favorite. Thickness between wedge fried and steak fries, rough chopped every piece was different size so how could you cook them all consistently. No crisp to the fries, fairly greasy too. I wont be back.

Inside you will find an array of high tops and low tops as well as some dinette seating but no booths. Visiting recently on a Saturday was a little tough but that was because half of the restaurant was reserved for a scheduled party. The service was a little choppy but the team did apologize for the lengthy wait and the back and forth. I truly believe it was because they were expecting a large crowd and people who were dining in didn't have a place to sit right away. All in all the food was delicious! Note there are times where they run out of BBQ so if you don't want to make the trip you can call ahead. There stated hours of operation are: Mon - Thur: 4:00pm - 10:00pm Fri - Sat: 11:00am - 10:00pm Sunday: Closed We ordered the following: Chips and queso with a side of pico: this was delicious. The queso was creamy and the pico gave it a great tang! I don't know if the chips are made in house but they were great. $9 1/2 LB Smoked wings in buffalo sauce: The wings were served with ranch and they definitely fell off the bone tender. The buffalo sauce was your typical sauce flavor. The wings come with a slice of bread that they put under them - almost missed it. $8 BBQ Meat Sampler: 1/4 Lb. of Each Meat -- Chicken, Pork, Brisket, Pork Ribs Served with BobbyQ Sauce, a slice of bread and some pickle chips. This sampler was perfect for two. It was a great way to try all their bbq options. My favorite was the brisket. Everything was well seasoned and so tender. The BobbyQ Sauce is their bbq sauce and they serve it warm. The sauce has a nice tang to it and goes well with the food. Because the restaurant was pretty busy I did not ask if they offer other sauces. $28 Jalapeno Cornbread with whipped honey butter: the cornbread was good but we didn't really get that jalapeno kick and will most likely skip on this next time. $4 Kids menu MAC & CHEESE made with queso blanco and served with a choice of Chips, Apple Sauce, Potato Salad, or Fusion Slaw We chose the potato salad but it was very bland and the kids did not like how hard the potatoes were. I think my kids would give the fusion slaw or the house chips a try next time. $8 Overall the food was great and we love supporting local so we will definitely be back.

Lofted above is a great looking outdoors complete with heat lamps and a mini A framed covered area that can be rented for parties. We were greeted warmly by friendly staff and given a kids menu, draft and spirits menu, regular menu and restaurant week menu. Menus galore! We went with the 3 course meal (many items can be ordered on the regular menu) for $25. I ordered the tomato paprika soup and my husband got the split pea soup. Of the two, the split pea soup was the clear winner. Two kinds of pork (cubed and shredded), well balanced seasoning and texture married well to enhance a soup I've loved since childhood. I could've easily eaten a bowl for my meal. The accompanying homemade Dutch Rye Bread, though I'm sure it's authentic, I didn't care for. It was dense, soft and had an off putting flavor. The second course we had was equally delicious. My hubby had the beef and pork sausage overtop a bed of mashed potatoes with kale, onions and bacon. I loved the addition of kale and the sausage was tasty. Everything was well seasoned. My beef slow cooked with apples and beer was delicious. I wish it had been served with more beef. It would have been nice to have some bigger chunks of meat to dive into. The mashed potatoes they came with were good, but the potatoes with kale were the star between the two dishes. The kid's meals were also good. The hamburger had a nice smokey flavor with a tasty side of fries. My daughter didn't care for her Mac 'n cheese, but that's because it was too refined for her palette. The Gouda cheese was complimented by the egg noodles. The third course was dessert. I tried the restaurant Flip custard: Dutch custard, fruit compote, and topped with a dollop of Greek Yogurt. It came with a cute spoon that gave the perfect portions and the flavors all complemented each other well. I would order this again and again. It was a great balance of tangy, fruity and sweet. My husband had the stroopwafle icecream. It was also good, and came with a cute mini stroopwafle. I washed all this down with their Bier Distillery Lager and tried a flavored banket spirit. This restaurant originally was just a beer and specialty liquor spot. I love that they now serve food, because that was the highlight of our evening. I wish this establishment was closer to our home, but perhaps will come back when the weather is nicer to enjoy the outdoor patio. Definitely come and check out this The Bier Distillery for yummy Dutch inspired food and drink! Worth the drive.

I was so excited about this option when I saw it on Instagram but there is so little mention of it in the menu (basically an, "ask us about our mini cocktail flight" at the bottom of a page) and no leaflet showing the flight details or price. I'm very much a person that likes to try a little bit for everything so once I remembered it after we left, I had a moment. I got a Gin Fizz and the bf got a Blueberry Vanilla Mule. The gin Fizz tasted very much like lemonade, even with the addition of cran flavoring. The Blueverry Vanilla Mule was very strongly clove. If you like clove, you'd likely like that one. We decided against getting second cocktails since happy hour had ended, but got a flight to try their stuff. We like the liqueurs but they are hard to sip straight due to all the flavor they pack. Our favorite was the Pink Peppercorn Gin out of everything we tried. The tour is $20 and it comes with a flight, which we were going to try anyway. Or you can just do the tour for $10 if you don't want a flight. It's not much of a "tour" in a physical sense as their production facility is small, in just one room, but we learned a lot about distilling in general, as well as a lot of information about the company and their products. I'd highly recommend it especially if you don't know much about the company. The interior has a 20s speakeasy feel, which I really liked. It's a little fancy but comfortable and welcoming. The drink menu was pretty large and it was tough for me to choose which drink I wanted after the flight. I ended up with the blueberry margarita because it was on happy hour. It was really great! Not too sweet. Nate got the cherry black Manhattan which we both enjoyed too. I loved the flight because we got to try pretty much all of the spirit offerings, including their amaro, Oaxacan green corn bourbon, and pink peppercorn gin, which were all unique and very tasty. Our bartender was knowledgable and very kind - great service. I'll definitely be back!
