I did a comparison of the more traditional Chinese restaurants in Santa Fe including Wok and two others that tend to rate about the same. I thought this might be helpful to someone and I was curious. There are newer, fancier, specialty Chinese restaurants, noodle shops, etc., but I wanted to see how the traditional, more affordable, restaurants differed by ordering the same thing as takeout at three restaurants and comparing. The woman who takes orders at Wok recommended Cashew Chicken once because it has mushrooms and lots of fresh vegetables. I really enjoyed it, so that's the dish I chose, not a specialty dish, just a regular dish. I also ordered egg rolls at each restaurant. Apples to apples. Here's what I found: First of all, the people at all of these restaurants were nice and helpful. I've only had good experiences at each restaurant. Wok served Cashew Chicken with big pieces of sliced chicken; fresh vegetables, not overcooked, but crispy and flavorful including carrots, whole snow peas, and other vegetables; fresh large mushrooms cut into big chunks; and a sauce that was light enough to be able to taste each ingredient. It was fresh and delicious. I was impressed. The egg rolls were crispy and good. If I had to critique anything, I think the Cashew Chicken could have been a little lighter on salt, but it was really good. It was a large portion, enough for two and leftovers. I will order it again in the future and try other dishes. Restaurant 2 served a decent version, but less flavorful. The chicken pieces and vegetables were cubed small, so the chicken was less tender, and the flavors were not distinct. It had fewer vegetables, or rather less variety of vegetables as well. The sauce was heavier, darker, and has a slight sweetness to it which I'm not fond of in a savory dish. The egg rolls were soft and a little soggy after getting home with them. Not great. All in all, I'd opt for Wok. Restaurant 3 served a similar cashew chicken to 2. Small, cubed pieces of both chicken and vegetables. Not the largest variety of vegetables. The sauce was OK, but not hugely flavorful. I thought I detected a slight sweetness here as well, which wasn't great for me. The individual ingredient flavors did not stand out in this dish either. The egg rolls were OK, crispy with decent flavor. Again, I'll try more Wok dishes. I am sure other restaurants have some great signature dishes as I've seen reviews by others of dishes that people love. I would be happy to try them, but this was an interesting experiment. Don't be fooled. If you realize by the reviews it's bias and only has white people giving good reviews. But in contrary, the owner and his wife despise people of color. Several times I was called "boy" in front of customers. I repeat the owners wife called me boy several times after no one responded. But she came straight to me and called me it again and then threw the food at me to pay. I have never seen a person of color in or out of this place. It need to go out of business! read more

Salty. Recently, everything has turned salty. The wonton filling is stale in wonton soup. There is too much vinegar in the General Tso sauce. The egg drop soup is extra thick with starch. I do not concur with some of the reviews that this place is the best in town for Chinese food. It has potential to be great but it's below average of Chinese food. Prices are reasonably marked and portions are descent. The flavor was either missing or either too much sodium. The chow mein was soggy and not as appetizing as it looked. Rice was too salty and soggy to the taste. The chicken sticks were definitely the best item in the menu. The egg drop soup was bellow average. The service was fast and our waiter was very attentive and kind. The place overall is average in size and plenty of sitting. We were the only customers during the hour that we were there. My Wife, daughter and I tried this restaurant out largely because of the yelp reviews had it at 4 stars which, besides several noodle house type restaurants, is as about as high of a rating for Santa Fe as you can find for Chinese. The food was average. Not great...not bad. The lunch special was actually a good deal from a quantity/price ratio. However, the interior is rather off putting. This will be the second Chinese restaurant that've tried here in Santa Fe. I do recommend them due the most authentic food I've tasted today. We started with shrimp egg-roll and pot stickers. Shrimp eggroll had a lot of shredded cabbage in with with ground black peppers. I approved their tasty appetizers so then I've also ordered sesame chicken, combination Lao-Mein, vegetable delight, combination fried rice and Mangolian Lamb. Everything was served deliciously hot and flavorful. My favorite will be the Mangolian Lamb, thinly slices served on top of fried noodles with onions and scallions. The serving size are reasonable for their price. The restaurant have a warm home environment feel to it. You can smell all the delicious dishes their cooking once you enter their entrance. Lessons learned: ask for specifics do not assume it comes with the meal. This is totally on me, I should have requested chip sticks and hot mustard! My girlfriend and I had been craving Chinese for a while before we decided to visit Wok this past weekend. I had been nervous about eating there because of warnings from family members; fortunately, those all turned out to be false alarms. We enjoyed rather a good meal, even though the service could have been better. As is often the case, when I told our waitress that I have a shellfish allergy and asked her to alert the kitchen staff, she simply told me there is no shellfish in the food we ordered and walked away. I've encountered this many times, and I feel it is irresponsible for a restaurant's staff not to be trained on handling dietary restrictions. It's not a matter of me making outlandish requests; even cross-contamination from shellfish could be lethal. Anyway, about the food. My girlfriend and I love to share. It's inevitable when we go out to eat that bites will be exchanged between our plates. As such, we often opt simply to order dishes expressly for sharing, and appetizers are our favorites. The hot and sour soup we started with met my girlfriend's standards, but wasn't for me. The cheese wontons were delicious; I highly recommend getting an order. The spring rolls were also a treat; they are of the smooth, flaky variety, rather than the thick, bumpy variety. Finally, we had the orange chicken, which was cooked just right and had the perfect amount of sauce coating each piece. All of our food arrived from the kitchen so hot as to burn my tongue (be cautious). Our server was not particularly attentive. We didn't get our water refilled until we were paying the check. Even getting our bill took much longer than necessary, because our server was watching television with another person (not sure if guest or employee). Because of this, and the ignorant reply to my request regarding my shellfish allergy, I am docking a star. As far as the food goes, I'm confident it's the best Chinese in Santa Fe. read more

We tried this today, I wanted to turn around and walk out . This place needs a major deep clean ! The floor along the wall has grungy build up . The place had an unclean feel. The food was not good not even ok. I ordered wonton soup and the wontons had that "I came from the freezer section of the store " which wasn't good. We ordered sesame chicken and fried rice . Sesame chicken came out in a very dark sauce that was very vinegary taste which I couldn't eat . The rice was very greasy and also not able to be eaten .
