The ambience was the usual- business lunches, mainly businessmen, and a packed house with lots of conversations and "good" noise. The service was excellent. The food was just OK. The wedge, porterhouse for two, and baked potato were all OK, but just OK. For the price, it was OK given the quality of the steak. As usual Wollensky delivered! What a wonderful experience with old NYC friends at our favorite old school local Steak house! Half of us grew up in midtown just blocks away from Wollensky! They were able to enlarge our very perfectly positioned table to accommodate an extra 2 friends! Great food and great times as usual!! Wonderful service too! In town for a couple of days of meetings and stopped by the Grill for an early Sunday meal and some football. I ordered a vesper it was perfect except served with an orange slice rather than a lemon twist I drank it. The place was buzzing it is about 530 pm and most tables and all the barstools are taken. I have eaten in the main restaurant many times always fabulous. Food was oysters and filet mignon medium rare. The oysters were plump, clean and fresh. Service was excellent - pleasant and efficient. Angie took care of me. A glass of the house cab was nice with the steak. Also of note - I came as a single and was treated appropriately and seated at a small table for two at the one-step level up in the bar. Perfect. I sometimes travel singular and appreciate the same level of service that a larger group would receive. One nugatory was the bread basket that I got was a few days old not stale but not fresh either. But this most recent visit as usual I did come here for the steak. And the steak was just average quality. It was nothing special like my previous visits. The food itself and our actual servers were wonderful BUT the maitre'd/host in the grey suit was blatantly prejudiced against non-white customers. This was very sad to see as we are Asian, live in the neighborhood, and are regulars to the restaurant (S&W). We tried to grab his attention and he ignored us each of the 6 times - we know for a fact that he saw and then he obviously turned the other way and went to greet other white tables with alacrity. At one point, he flipped his head with an eye roll. Once we can ignore and call it an accident - 5-6 times is a habit and pattern. This is completely ahorable behavior and unacceptable for an institution of this caliber. Our first dinner in NY 1/28/2023. We were seated in some right corner where you couldn't even pull your seat out and given a menu. We didn't know it was restaurant week. We proceeded to order both ribeyes, mash, and mushrooms. The place was loud and bustling I don't think our server took our order correctly. Last, we had coconut and chocolate cake for dessert. We got the bill and it said we ordered four rounds of wine. That never happened. Show me who drank this because it wasn't us. The overall experience was unpleasant for me. I'm surprised Wollensky Grill doesn't have a higher rating. I stopped in on a weekend for a solo lunch and it truly hit the spot. I got the classic caesar salad, prime wollensky burger with cheddar, and took a slice of cheesecake to go. The caesar is actually what inspired me to write this review. It was so crisp and well dressed, I am addicted and will absolutely be coming back just for this. This might be my new favorite caesar salad in the city. I'm constantly on the hunt for good burgers in the city and this burger was an absolute hit. I ordered it medium and it was perfect. The pickles were on the sweeter side but still good. They also offered both red and white onion slices which was awesome, I loved having the option to choose. The waffle fries were super crispy and fresh. I have no notes! Had a nice experience at S&M Governors Cut in Miami celebrating a friend's birthday and another's promotion the weekend before NYC for business. Thought I would try the original. Was more in mood for casual so ended up at the grill. Great NYC service from Oliver at the bar who steered me to the prime sirloin and S&M house Cab. Perfect and sirloin was better than 95% of NY strips (I think it was a NY strip) ~ $35. Enjoyed great company at the bar with a regular from the neighborhood swapping story. I thought this would exceed my expectations, but not really. Even the homemade BBQ sauce tasted like Wendy's bbq sauce. As for the pecan pie in ice cream and apple crumb pie they were phenomenal! Top notch from start to finish. We arrived on a semi busy Sunday afternoon about an hour before our reservation. They seemed to have no problem taking us early, a plus! Both of us thought the place had a cool old fashioned vibe to it. Service was excellent, not hurried. I started with the clam chowder. Delicious and chock full of clams but not as creamy as I would've liked. Then came my bone-in filet mignon. Grilled to perfection, I hardly needed a knife! I took my family out for dinner yesterday sun feb 18 2024. I am a 60 yr old woman. After finally seated we waited at least 15 to 20 minutes as waiters continued walking past our table as if we were invisible. A waiter was table clothing an empty table right next to ours never stopped to acknowledge or take our order until I began steaming with smoke escaping my ears. I nevertheless politely asked where was our waiter to which he seemed to come out a trance and took our order. After that , waiting another 15 minutes, without bringing any appetizers my family ordered until this time, my son smoke bellowing out his ears, calmly inquired about our appetizers which we were informed the scallops my daughter had ordered wasn't ready. Keep in mind I had ordered salad and my son soup. So why hadn't at least our appetizers of salad and soup had not been brought out. Hmm good question. Moving forward after speaking to the manager we were told "We had come at the wrong time " because of a shift change which absolutely shouldn't have affected our party when we were there way before any shift change! All excuses for extremely POOR service! My family had all ordered steak. Which was the worst I've ever tasted. Absolutely no seasonings at all! The loaded potatoes that looked like a glob of Mac and cheese was also extremely bland and the cream spinach looked like puréed baby food! I was BEYOND DISAPPOINTED! Oh let me not forget at 5pm the lights are turned down so low you could barely see the menu OR anything else and I wear glasses! Even another diner looked at me and said she couldn't see! I've been here a few times now and decided to finally write my review. I like the grill because it is open during the day as opposed to for dinner. They check your vax cards and then you are seated. A few times we were seated on the elevated area and once we were seated by the window, which I prefer. The grill is small and tight, the tables are essentially on top of each other. If someone behind you needs extra space you are forced to squeeze in to the point where it is almost uncomfortable. The service for the most part is good. We had one waiter who seemingly forgot about us. I've had the Malbec every time and it's delicious. For appetizer I've had the fried zucchini and onion rings. Cooked to fried perfection and lightly breaded. I've had the filet mignon Cajun style, and the grill sirloin. Both are very flavorful. The sirloin was ordered medium but came out well done. The filet was and still is my most favorite steak. For sides I've had the Brussels sprouts and the creamed spinach which was also delicious. There is the Smith & Wollensky side of the restaurant, which I believe is a bit more classy, and there is the Wollensky Grill which has more of a bar vibe. Short review: Very nice waitstaff and a really, really good house burger. I went here approximately a month ago and the food was excellent though if it wasn't for the maître d' and waiter, this would have probably gone as a 2/3 due to how long it took to receive my meal. Anyway I went here on a weekday around 6 or 6:30 so and I was out of there around 9 but more of that later. I happened to get the last seat and I was surprised how crowded it was for it being a normal weekday. I waited a bit and eventually the friendly waiter came over with the menu. He asked me if I wanted a drink and I asked for an Old Fashioned and he asked rye or bourbon and he recommended rye which I went with. It came out probably in 20 or 30 minutes with the waiter apologizing as there was a backup due to how many people were ordering. The drink was quite tasty though very spirit focused which is expected for most Old Fashioned. In hindsight I probably would have gone with the bourbon if I knew that the burger was going to take so long but I digress. The waiter then asked for my order and I went with their House Wollensky Burger with cheddar as my cheese of choice as per usual and I added mushrooms as it was a steakhouse and I presumed it wouldn't be the usual topping. I asked about the fries and he confirmed that everything comes with waffle fries instead which is my preference anyway so if that is a plus here. After waiting for a good while (and getting a good way through my rather strong cocktail;) with the waiter checking on me occasionally; the maître d' came over and asked how everything was and I believe he asked if I was finished. I mentioned that I hadn't received my meal yet and he said he would check after confirming that I ordered the burger. I thanked him and he came back later telling me it would be out soon. The waiter came over around a while later with the finished burger explaining that the kitchen was overly crowded and he apologized for the delay and told me that I would be getting an extra cocktail on the house which was very nice though probably unneeded as the first one was strong enough. The burger was perfectly grilled at the temperature of my choice (medium rare.) it was also surprisingly big what isn't a bad thing and it was clearly a very high quality patty. There was a good helping of tasty cheddar on top of it as well as a lot of mushrooms. The mushrooms (I believe oyster) were in particular fantastic, probably sautéed in butter though I am unsure. Overall it reminded me of a better version of a similar style cheeseburger from Minetta and a perfect example of what a steakhouse burger should be. The portion size was bigger here with there being more cheese with the only main (better) distinction otherwise being waffle fries vs. pommes frites. The other accompaniments were the usual; large pieces of tomato, some lettuce, raw onion, and pickles. The pickles were my only issue, being a bit too sweet for my liking (almost like a pickle slaw) though this is also personal preference. After finishing the burger and being mostly stuffed, the waiter asked if I wanted dessert. I went with the sticky toffee pudding as I figured it would help me finish the 2nd cocktail. It was served warm with the usual butterscotch sauce as well as some vanilla ice cream. The portion size was big which is expected for steakhouses and it was overall quite tasty and a satisfying end to the meal. I got the check and the waiter or maître d' had also taking off the dessert which was also very nice so overall I only paid for the burger and one of the the drinks. There was also no charge for the mushrooms though I'm unsure if this just wasn't put on the check or if they were also not charged (I presume the latter.) I left the place slightly tipsy after giving the server a generous tip with the maître d' thanking me for my stay and hoping that the next time it wouldn't be as big of a delay. If they hadn't checked on me and made sure that things were good, I probably would have left unsatisfied thinking that while the burger was very good, it wasn't worth it for how long I had to wait. However, the staff there really turned the meal around. I plan on coming back with a friend of mine at some point to sample said burger again (and probably some other things.) I must say, I enjoyed my grill side lunch more than my RW lunch and after work dinners on the restaurant side. The grill side is much more relaxed, casual - no need to dress up. I could order a burger or salad and still get my steak fix without the hefty price tag of the steakhouse restaurant upstairs and next door. I came here for an afternoon lunch, reservations welcome (as I did), at the suggestion of a work buddy. She suggested I try the special Summer Menu burger since she saw me eyeing it - a nearby table ordered it. And I am glad I listened. That and I figured I could order their regular lunch burger anytime. The summer menu being seasonal and all. My buddy had a craving for the steak salad, which she's raved to me about it, dozens of times. I was totally game to see what the hype was about. To my surprise, the portion was huge and very generous cuts of steak. It was like, where's the salad? I would totally order it next time. It was a great value as well given the price/location/size. I must stress, the summer menu burger was SO good!! (Do note, this is NOT the same burger on their daily lunch menu). This was a summer menu special - a 28 day dry aged beef patty, a blend of filet, rib eye, and sirloin. Topped with bone marrow, caramelized onions, and lastly more importantly, the Artisanal Pleasant Ridge Reserve cheese (like an aged alpine style cheese; only available in the summer). The meat was cooked medium rare as I requested...pink as you can see, very juicy, and just perfect. I enjoyed this burger from top to bottom...bun and all. I would totally come back just to eat this again. And I would recommend it if given the option between the regular lunch menu or this one. Service was ok and the waiter forgot my beverage but after such a heavy meal, I was fine sipping my NYC finest - tap water. LOL Come for the seasonal burger and the steak salad. I was really excited to finally try a burger and fries here. I almost went to one of my regulars in PJ Clarke's but opted for this. Unfortunately it was just ok. The burger was Ken do these thick things that I think is a marketing tactic ie bigger is better. Well it isn't in this case. The meat was good not great and the bun is garbage. I mean I don't get it - for $25 you'd think they could give you a great bun but instead you get this massive meat patty with a thin stale bun that can't handle it. And don't talk to me about these fries. How do you screw up fries? They put some kind of cheese on these waffle fries and it just doesn't work. Just make awesome regular fries ugh. I told the waiter and to his credit he had the kitchen bring me a new piece. The ambience was excellent as well as the service . Sunday mass comes once a week, but the religious experience of dining at Smith and Wollensky's can be achieved any day of the week. This place is where trash meets class: The Applebees of the Big Apple. I find myself craving to come back before I walk out. Plotting when is an acceptable period before I can enter the gates of food heaven again. I keep making up excuses to come back almost weekly. This week I held my cat's funeral reception dinner at S&W and the week before I celebrated my coworker's nefews having his bar mitzva after overhearing her talk about it by the water cooler. You either have class or you don't. S&W is the epitome of class. This is obvious when they shuttle you to their high-class bar for a complimentary drink if your table isn't ready at the time of your reservation. This fine establishment is Technically a chain restaurant with ten locations worldwide but you would be making an ass of yourself if you qualified it one. If you want to do it right make sure you go to the weekend wine dinner that is offered after 8 pm Thursday- Saturday. The dinner comes with endless wine that the waiters push on you like they have a stake in the sales of the particular wine. Every rehab facility within the Tristate area should write a handwritten thank you note to S&W thanking them for keeping them in business. The endless wine has a flow rate higher than the Mississippi and the food leaves you stuffed like the Thanksgiving turkey. I recommend not planning a night on the town after this reservation because you will be so full of great food and wine that you will want to retreat to your sleeping corners as fast as possible. While it's technically not all you can eat I would love to see how man vs food would hold up to the wine dinner. The portion size makes other steakhouses look stingy. *if you have European friends coming to town to visit, Please take them here first and act like it's a typical American restaurant* After I feast on a huge plate of thick-cut bacon I can barely look at my steak. It's only when I take a bite of the perfectly aged, seasoned, and masterfully cooked meat that I can muster up eating more. The meat gods would most certainly turn you vegan if you let a filet go to waste within the confines of the S&W walls. By the time the desert hits and the meat sweats are in full swing I usually just admire its appearance rather than try and eat the whole cake that they claim is just a slice. All the food is great but you would be missing out if you left with trying the signature think cut bacon. If my mention above wasn't enough to convince you to get it I hope this second shoutout does. I have stopped eating other bacon because of the letdown and the depression that follows. It's hard to drive a Prius after taking a Ferrari for a spin. The drinks are nothing to joke about. The martini is always the obvious choice in NYC, especially at S&W. You will not find a bigger martini anywhere in the world unless you are at one of the other 9 locations. The size of the glass is big enough to keep Shamu the orca happy, If you take away everything else the people make S&W worth it. The staff is so warm they make feel like you have been invited over to their house for a meal; no shocker they all have tenures old enough to vote. Smith and Wollensky's is more than just a restaurant to me. My origin starts at the S&W in Miami twenty-two years and nine months ago at my parent's anniversary dinner (true story). Eating the same food and drinking the same wine that fueled my conception is an honor, especially at the original S&W In NYC. I came in during lunch with my coworkers and was pleasantly surprised how comparable it was to the next door restaurant. For lunch they were already packed so, it's good to make a reservation. We ended up ordering a bunch of things. There entree sizes are huge! I ended up taking my prime rib home with me for dinner. We also ordered some oysters which were delicious and a bunch of sides. I would say if you're here with a friend to split and entree and get a few sides. The waiters are so helpful and they're always making sure your glasses are full. The Grills interpretation is a small lobster roll and a delicious small cheesesteak- just a perfect little combo. You cannot go wrong with the steaks - although they are larger than most establishments offer (10 or 12 oz. vs 8 oz.). First off, this is not a review of Smith and Wollensky - its bigger and much more upscale brother, which is conveniently located next door. Nevertheless, Wollensky Grill as a standalone restaurant made a lot of sense, offering diners a less formal experience yet still celebrating the heart and soul of what made this place great: Meat. As a huge meat fan, Wollensky Grill has been serving up some the best old-fashioned Burgers around. The first time I was here was nearly 5 years ago, on the very last day of my summer internship. My managers ordered for each of us the House-Made Wollensky Burger. At the time, I had never tasted a burger so juicy and comforting. Since then I have been hooked. Whereas nowadays modern burgers frequently feature fancy toppings and gourmet-style designs, the House Wollensky burgers are true to its traditions and place the entire emphasis on the meat. It comes with minimal toppings: your choice of cheese, raw red onion, lettuce, and a jar of pickles. But that is okay because the patty is absolutely succulent and dripping with juice: it definitely is the star of the dish. While I was here, I tried also the sirloin, asparagus, and bacon. The bacon was actually off the menu, but all you need to do is ask. I did find the bacons to be extremely salty, which meant I had to chug a lot of water the entire night in order to fight off the aftertaste caused by sodium. read more

Came to check this place out after a Knicks game and all I can say is Excellent. Service was amazing the moment my wife and I walked in. Manager Justin was very pleasant, made sure to check in and make sure everything was going smooth, and the attention to detail on his behalf along with the team made the place a wonderful visit. Ribeye is succulent, huge, flavorful, delicious, and jut truly exquisite. Best steak in NY ! We had the Hash browns and creamy spinach due to their recommendations by the waiter and manager.
