We were excited to eat breakfast here after all the great reviews. It was very busy, yet the service was good. The food not so much! Asked for extra crispy bacon but it was soggy bacon. Stopped in for breakfast this morning on our way back home. It's a very unassuming place from the outside and very low key on the inside, but the parking lot was packed so this tells you something! So we sat at the bar and had a great breakfast and had a free show too! We were right in front of the grill and watched the grill master and the servers do their stuff. These people hustle! We were exhausted just watching them cook and serve folks! Our food was great, hot and just as ordered. They have daily specials and everything we had was great! Staying in Marathon, FL and looking for a good breakfast experience? You should drive right past the Wooden Spoon. From start to finish this was a miserable experience. The early waitress barely grunted at me while taking my order and her angry food prep, while somewhat fascinating, was pretty stressful to watch. The dishwasher actually served me coffee, and with a smile, which I appreciated. I ordered simple bacon and eggs that took 20 minutes to be angrily flung in front of me. My eggs over-medium were undercooked and runny and the bacon was really gamey. I only ate one strip, very disappointing for a customer only wanting a simple breakfast. Toast arrived well after my runny eggs and bacon and again delivery came with a scowl. Unreal. I also had flies landing on me and my food, and the stainless milk server looked like it hadn't been scrubbed since sometime last year. At 8am things got a lot better when Waitress #2 arrived, she was all smiles and "Honey" and "Dear" and my coffee was refilled happily. She is the reason for an extra star. I should have arrived 40 minutes later; the food may still have been sub-par but at least it would have been a much more pleasant experience. read more

Better come hungry! Great little diner style breakfast place that is always very busy. For a good reason. Your breakfast gets you loaded up for the day. They have lots of different options, something for everyone. There are seasonal and weekly specials as well. Eat in or order out. And please, it's a diner for Christ sake. Agreeing with those who had bad service. Came here on my own and stood inside the door for several minutes before walking up to the counter and asking if I could sit down. The waitress said "ok" but didn't clean up the counter until she noticed that she couldn't place anything down. I ordered the two egg breakfast with scrapple and potatoes. It was just ok, nothing to celebrate. But the toast was cold and the disgusting margarine (use butter people!!! It's all natural and delicious) was not melted. Sorry, I'll never come back. read more

This is the best meal we've had in the keys so far. I may be slightly bias because I am a breakfast person. It's my favorite meal. It's a small diner, nothing fancy. They're doing their best to social distance in a tight space. Masks are required while wait and you're asked to wait outside until you can be seated. Unlike the other area restaurants we've visited they are not using disposable dishes. The food was delicious. I ordered the western omelet with potatoes and a biscuit. My husband had eggs, bacon, cheese grits and a biscuit. We shared a blueberry pancake. It was a lot of food, we misjudged because the portions are huge. That pancake came out on an oversized oval shaped plate and took up almost the whole plate. We had a short wait outside, less than 10 minutes. The place had steady traffic. Our service was phenomenal. I wish I caught her name. She was courteous, kept checking with us, had the refills ready and quick. The only negative thing I would add is the receipt process. You don't get an itemized receipt, you get a hand written slip with your total. That wasn't enough to make me change any of the stars in this review. read more

Is it just me or are the most basic things better in the keys! Ambience awaits you. The building is very old and on the wall it boasts a menu and trifold of the original restaurant. This year I had the pancakes, they were made perfectly! Fluffy and melted in my mouth. My wife had a piece of the banana nut bread buttered and put on the skillet, that was awesome! And my daughter in law had the biscuits and gravy, she said the biscuit was a little dry but the sausage gravy was very good. read more

Kinda typical diner off the main road. Bathrooms in back out the door like a gas station. Bathroom was clean but super small. We both ordered the special, chicken fried steak and eggs. Came smothered in sausage gravy and was very food diner style food. Eggs and potatoes also good. Big breakfast and too much to eat. Refill on Diet Coke came as a new cold can of Coke- no charge. Wooden Spoon sets adorn the walls all around. It's quite the sight to see! Proprietor Tim stopped by to say "hello". That was a highlight of the visit. Get that early. Vacationing in Marathon. This review is regarding the food and the service. If you have an issue with the restaurant being a little hole the wall, Mom and Pop then this isn't the place for you. But the food is delicious. Pancakes were fluffy and flavorful. Biscuits are GIANT and perfectly baked. My western omelet was no frills and one of the best omelets I've had as of recent. Husband had the chicken fried steak. So good for the price. Service was fast and friendly. Our waitress was very sweet. Felt like stopping into a friends Grandmas house for breakfast. While visiting Marathon it was recommended to us to visit the Wooden Spoon for brunch. We're 4 adults traveling together - no kids. The food was your average breakfast fare. The service was efficient though not overly friendly. As we were chatting quietly and eating our food, the couple next to us got up and the man told us, "I hope you tourists have a nice day now!" All of us were kind of shocked because - who says that? But also we were irritated that we didn't have a good comeback ready to go. We can only assume that the word "tourist" was used in derision and that really left a bad impression of the area. Clearly this man is not a business owner or he would quickly realize that tourism and possibly fishing charters are the only industries that are succeeding in this area. He might do well to just ignore us tourists particularly since we were quietly minding our own business and trying to enjoy a meal. Shooing is away will not make your sunny paradise a better place. read more

Like several others said, service was very pleasant, helpful and attentive. However it was really slammed when we went there last week. We got in pretty quick at the bar. Tables are very close and bigger patrons sort of squeeze there junk across your back. We kind of like the breakfast diner/dive feel and we're hoping for a great experience. The short order cook was entertaining. My problem is that we were uncomfortable to finish our meal because people were waiting in the doorway. Also, the food was pretty average. The sausage was that rubbery process Sam's type. Scrambled eggs too dry. Coffee weak. The famous biscuits didn't seem like they were made that morning. Was really hoping for a gem. Ate there this morning waitress was disrespectful putting her hand in my fIkfast and and I told her I wanted my glass of milk with my meal when it got to the table she said remind me so then I tried to remind her after she gave us our food she said she had five other table she'd be back she came back 10 minutes later she said how's everything you need anything I said yeah I need my milk she put her hand in my face and just swung her hand back like whatever and walked away and I did not get my milk as she's walking away she said I told you to remind me I said politely I try to but you told me you had five other tables, ,, we had 7 at our table need separate bills she would not do that for us Food was Great read more
