We ate breakfast at the Wooden Spoon twice. Our first experience was 4 Stars. Quick friendly service, no wait for a table even though they were busy, tasty food. Our second experience brought it down to 3 stars. We had to wait for a bit (which is not a big problem) and were eventually seated at the counter. Even though it was busier, everyone working seemed much more stressed out. We saw a lot of touching of food (toast, bacon) without gloves/washing by the servers. (Perks of sitting at the counter?) About halfway through our meal the owner? manager? started screaming at a table of customers. She said they had been disrespectful to her the day before and again that day, so she demanded they leave and told them their food was on the house. It was Waffle House level of drama, which we didn't expect from sleepy Marathon, FL. The rest of the employees didn't seem phased, so maybe this isn't a rare occurrence? It's worth a try if you want a place that's more locals than tourists, and the food is pretty decent... but be on your best behavior! :)

Stopped in with my wife, food was great and so was the atmosphere. Old school diner vibes. Next time we are in the keys, we will be back! - Jake & Lenny

Too many orders taken and a loooooong wait for food.

Waited over 60 minutes for our breakfast order. Seemed to be seating more guests than kitchen could handle at one time. Food was average.

This place is right on the main drag. Small, only open for breakfast and lunch. I ordered mushroom Swiss burger and fries. Burger came with Swiss and American cheeses, sautéed mushrooms and onions. Burger was very good, cheese melted perfectly. Stop in and try it. Their sweet tea was good also. Staff very friendly.

Super old school diner with amazing breakfast options! Service isn't the greatest though because there is only one lady who does everything besides the cooking so we had to go find her when it came time to pay our bill. Besides that, I enjoyed the food and restaurant decor. A lot of locals seem to eat here in the morning, and I can see why. It's just a nice homely feeling getting some fresh coffee and hot food while enjoying pleasant conversations. Would recommend to anyone to stop by when visiting Key West in Florida.

We stay in Marathon for a week between Christmas and New Years - so we aren't locals - and we're not regulars at the Wooden Spoon. Over the past 3 or 4 years, however, I've made it a point to patronize the Wooden Spoon at least once for a delicious breakfast. The Wooden Spoon has seating available at the counter or at tables located as soon as you walk through the door. Initially, I felt like the wait staff was annoyed at anyone who wasn't a local or a regular, but over the past few visits that feeling has disappeared. The waitstaff seem pleasant and glad to have the business, even from out-of-towners. As soon as you sit down, someone brings you a coffee and water. Not long after that, the server is over to take your order. The food is cooked to order and usually comes out very quickly. I am a breakfast fanatic, so that's what I order. The Wooden Spoon is one of the few establishments in Marathon that serve scrapple. Yum!!! I do recommend this business because the service is pleasant and quick and the food is hot and delicious.

While this place seemed like a good idea at the outset, on our trip from Key West, North, it disappointed. Food was decent, but service was rushed and I FOUND A STRAY BACON PIECE AND STRAY HAIR IN THE FOOD. My burger omelet had a bacon piece on the center (edge of photo, pushed to side of plate), and the hair was on a piece of cheese. Service was rushed. Near closing, around noon on a Saturday, when the restaurant closes at 1pm, it was very busy, and the restaurant was understaffed. We waited approximately 15 minutes after sitting down before getting a menu. Servers would get our order then leave very quickly, so we had to wait long before finding out where the restroom was (outside around back), getting the water we asked for previously and to get cream for coffee. The clown chowder was hearty and tasty. The bowl size was small, even though it was the larger non cup option. I went to the counter to tell staff that there was bacon on the food which I can't eat it. They didn't offer to remake the food or provide any discount. Later when I saw the hair on the omelette I didn't say anything since staff was so busy and rushing around. I also don't think the complaint would have been well received. If asked how the food was I would have mentioned the hair, but no one came by after we got the cheque or asked about our experience. Overall, decor was quaint and homey, with that 50s diner feel. If not for the kitchen prep errors, and hasty service I would have rated this place higher.

Very busy and loud with close sitting. We never got the water we asked for with our coffee. Had to ask for spoon to stir the creamer and my husband asked for refill and the waitress did everything but refill his cup. Seems if you are a tourist you get substandard food and service. My bacon was way overcooked so I didn't even eat it. Biscuit was too dense and tasteless. Not impressed when we got our $33 bill for crappy food.

This was a recommended breakfast place by our hotel. After hearing it was a Marathon staple restaurant having been in Marathon for a long time, we should try it out. It's nothing to look at, however, the food was priced fairly, came out quickly and we were satisfied. I did splurge and get the iced chocolate and strawberry coffee, which was delicious. The service was okay as well as the ambiance. Good experience.

Great spot on Marathon for breakfast. Nice staff, great grits and nice fresh coffee. Couldn't ask for more.

We got seated inside just as the sun was starting to set. Sadly all the guests that had finished eating right before us decided to walk over to the dock outside the restaurant which just so happened to be the exact viewing location for the sunset so we didn't get any really good photos of it bc there were so many people over there videoing it and taking photos. It was still nice scenery while we waited for our food though. I ordered ceviche to start us off as our appetizer and it was really good. My dinner was a pasta dish with shrimp and scallops. The sauce was supposed to be a white cream sauce but it was really runny. Even adding extra Parmesan cheese to it didn't help thicken it. It tasted ok. Not my best pick. I had a choice of soup or salad with it. I chose their she crab soup and I'm glad I did. It was great. Almost reminded me of homemade chicken and dumplings soup just with crab. I really liked it. I should have stopped with that and the ceviche. My husband got a grouper fish sandwich. He thought it was good but the prices were a bit high for what it was. His fish sandwich was $29. Although good, not worth $29. My pasta definitely not worth the $31. May be a bit of a tourist trap but the food was decent.

The service and food were both fantastic! While they focus on seafood, there is something for everyone on the menu, even your picky eaters. Fresh and very flavorful!! The fish dip, lobster/steak, chicken, key lime pie, and cheesecake are all highly recommended. Restrooms have AC and are clean (with mouthwash). Note you need to go up a flight of brick stairs to access it. May want to call for accessibility options if needed. There is also extensive parking to the left AAs you drive in. Most go to the right, by the entrance. Great views and atmosphere!

No trash bags, one hairdryer for two bathrooms, no soap in unit, showers, lavatories, none. Called front desk and stopped by several times but trash and linen stayed at door for three days. On last full day when we stopped by front desk to talkl about our experience, we were given a discount certificate for same day dining. Nice gesture but did little to allay the issues.Amenities on property are terrific but disappointed that water park isn't available until August. Advertising said "summer 2026," so we thought it would be open in June, but no. Grandsons didn't know the difference since the pool and lagoon are awesome, as was our reef fishing trip on the Salt Walker. We caught many yellowtail snapper and had Angler and Ale prepare fish for dinner that night. Restaurants are quite good with excellent service and priced as you would expect for resort dining (Salt and Ash is excellent and priced accordingly) Not sure if we will return to Hawk's Cay after this trip. It's a long trip from Colorado and a long drive from MIA for what we paid vs overall experience.

Great Stay With Some Service & Logistics Gaps…read more Overall, we had a genuinely great experience as first-time visitors traveling without kids but with service animals. The property shines in many areas, especially if you're looking for a relaxing resort atmosphere with beautiful water views, pet-friendly accommodations, and a fun, laid-back vibe. That said, there were a few frustrating misses that held this back from being a 5-star stay. THE GOOD * Beautiful beach & lagoon area - Easily one of the highlights of the property. Relaxing, scenic, and fun overall. * Salt + Ash is a must - Exceptional food and one of the best dining experiences on property. The wine selection was top-notch and the beef tenderloin was outstanding. Easily our favorite restaurant. * Incredible staff throughout the resort - Bell staff, valet, oceanfront servers, housekeeping crew, and pool staff were consistently kind, personable, and welcoming. * Staff who go above and beyond - Huge shoutout to Joshua, who helped us secure chairs near the adult pool, and Danielle, who took time to chat, swap stories, and made us feel genuinely welcome. Hospitality like that sticks with you. * Captain's Suite is worth the upgrade - Strongly recommend spending the extra money if budget allows. The added space made the trip: dining area, living room, fridge, two toilets, large balcony, and beautiful water views overlooking the pool and lagoon. It elevated the experience tremendously. * Extremely pet & service animal friendly - This place deserves serious praise here. Few resorts feel this comfortable and accommodating for travelers with animals. Staff were respectful, welcoming, and there were no awkward restrictions or friction. If you travel with pets or service animals, this property stands out. * Tiki Grill - Great atmosphere for drinks and relaxing. Perfect for unwinding poolside. * 20% off dining on property helped offset costs - Appreciated perk considering resort pricing. THE NOT-SO-GOOD * Front desk communication & housekeeping logistics need work - This was our biggest frustration. We stayed in a Captain's Suite and requested both a room cleaning and balcony cleaning (bird droppings had accumulated on the balcony) around 10 AM. The front desk wrote down our room number and assured us it would be taken care of. When we returned around 3:30 PM, neither had been done. By after 4:30 PM, the room had finally been cleaned, but the balcony still hadn't been addressed. When you pay extra for a premium room and oceanfront balcony experience, this feels disappointing. There also seems to be a mild pigeon issue, and balcony maintenance should really be part of a regular checklist. Some simple bird deterrents or more proactive cleaning would go a long way. * Concierge/text support didn't materialize - We were told we'd receive a concierge-style welcome text shortly after check-in for support/questions. Unfortunately, we never received it. To make matters worse, the room phones didn't work, meaning concerns had to be addressed in person while waiting in the front desk line. * Food quality was inconsistent - Salt + Ash was phenomenal, but not every dining experience matched that standard. Tiki Grill: Great drinks and atmosphere, but the food was forgettable, under-seasoned, and not something we'd order again. Fine in a pinch. Angler & Ale: Beautiful waterfront views and exceptional staff, but the food leaned heavily fried and felt more like average bar food than resort dining. Fish and chips were disappointing. Oddly enough, the banana split ended up redeeming the meal. * Convenience store prices were shocking - Convenient? Yes. Affordable? Not even close. A few sodas and snacks escalated to $60+ surprisingly fast. I expected a slightly easier option versus restaurant pricing, but the markup felt extreme. * Parking costs add up - Valet runs about $40/day and self-parking is roughly half, but expect around a 10-minute walk with luggage, making valet feel almost mandatory. FINAL THOUGHTS Despite some communication breakdowns and uneven food experiences, we truly enjoyed our stay. The Captain's Suite, peaceful balcony views, fire pit at night, lagoon, beach access, pickleball, and pet-friendly atmosphere made for memorable moments. My advice: upgrade to the Captain's Suite, eat at Salt + Ash (seriously, get the beef tenderloin), enjoy the tiki drinks, walk the grounds, soak in the sun, and be selective about food choices elsewhere. Use the convenience store sparingly. Fix the housekeeping/communication gaps, improve how guests can raise concerns without standing in line, and clean those balconies consistently--and this place could easily become a 5-star destination.

I got the Waffle Pig, and when the food was delivered asked for a spare plate to put the waffle on (since they just place the waffle and eggs and sausage and bacon in a big pile on one single plate). The plate never came. It took asking 3 different people 4 separate times to get that extra plate. It seems like a problem with the definition of responsibilities? I think each time the person I asked just told someone else I needed a plate and no one ever actually got me a plate. We were visited by at least 5 different people during our meal - they had plenty of people working and it was not super busy yet, so it just seems like a break down of communication. They only accept cash, we needed to use their ATM to get cash - and the ATM fee was higher than if they just accepted cards and charged us the transaction fee on a credit card payment. Overall - decent food, terrible service, nothing that would encourage me to stop again though.
