The plastic wheels on my mom's screen door broke. I removed the entire wheel apparatus and took it to Woods, looking for a replacement. When the clerk was unable to find an exact replacement apparatus (due to its age), he offered to punch out the rivets on the old apparatus and replace the wheels with metal ones. Total price out the door for both was $10. This saved me from having to buy at rivet machine myself or, conversely, a brand new screen door! What great service! I love this store. As the daughter of an independent hardware man back in the '60s, I know what a small store can do that a mammoth store cannot. Fast and personalized service, parts sold individually (instead of unwanted quantities in blister packs), friendly folks: it all adds up to a very happy trip to the hardware store. Owner John helped repair my piece of obscure machinery (a drum carder for processing wool prior to spinning) by removing the stripped carriage bolt, replacing it with another, plus a brass wing nut and washer, and suggesting a minor parts adjustment that might be anticipated in the future. I have had multiple bad experiences here. I know my way around hardware stores. It's rare I ask for direction or help from sales associates. I can count a handful of times where the associates were completely put out by a simple question on aisle direction or where to find something. Last week I asked an elder gentleman very politely about an item, his response " MAKE IT FAST" as I stare in disbelief, he says "WELL WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT? " I'm still in disbelief. I live in an adjacent neighborhood and have continued to give them steady business out of convenience, but those days are history. It's a shame these people are so rude because I love to support local business. Obviously poor management. I'll drive across town to Anza hardware, Home Depot, or lowes for the rest of my days. This place will stay busy due to a great location but will never receive another penny from me. read more

This Hardware store has been in the Southwood Homes neighborhood for as long as I remember. In fact, I worked here from the time I was 17 until I was about 25, while I was going to college. It used to be across the street two doors down from the bakery. While I was there, they took over a hobby shop that was next door and enlarged. Some years after I left, the Wood's sold out to the current owner and he eventually moved into their current location across the street which used to be a supermarket. The great thing about this store is that it carries all of the stuff the original builder of Southwood Homes used in the construction of these houses. The employees are familiar with what you need and can offer tips on almost any project. Conrad, the General Manager, has been here since about the time I worked here, so he's very knowledgeable. This is a great neighborhood hardware Store that the big boys can't even touch. My favorite thing about Woods is that I can buy the one screw or nail I need instead of a lifetime supply of them. read more

I give it 2 stars only because of the guy that helped me. I came in for a castle nut because the one I had was to big. The guy helping me out seen my castle nut and I explained what was going on as far as what I needed. He said well I can grind yours down for you, I said that would work, And if this one goes well I have another one I'm bringing back. While I'm sitting in the back of the store waiting for him to finish. another guy walks over to me from the key section and asked what was I waiting for??? I instantly became stand offish because of how he approached me and his tone of voice. It felt like he had a issue with me because I was black. I told him and he immediately walks to where the guy was grinding my castle nut and says something to him. The cool guy that grinned my castle nut come out gave me the nut and told me it was going to be 6$ for the labor I said perfect. He walks away from me while I'm in line about to pay the 6$ he comes back over to me and says oh if you bring the other one my Manager says it will be 10$! I looked at him in disbelief. I new that manager wasn't right. You no when your somewhere and you can feel what's going on and you start to sweat? Like you can feel that persons vibe? Well that's what it was. The 4 extra dollars was nothing but how are you going to charge me 4 more dollars for the same job 10 min later??? Did sand paper go up in price that fast? Did pay wage go up with in the 10 minutes it took me to bring the other one back?? As I type this I still can't figure out what the 4 extra dollars was for. Anyway I believe in my heart of hearts that he was bigot. And as a business owner myself, at my business he would no longer work for me after a post like this one. read more

I came to return them and Angela was completely rude and told me I couldn't return and only got store credit - even though they told me the wrong ones to buy. This place is the last of the neighborhood hardware stores in this area that I can think of. I see people complain about the prices and selection but that's not the point. Of course you may pay a little more and they don't have the room for a ridiculous amount of inventory, but this shop makes up for it in other areas. If you live in the area it's a great convenient shop for all those little things that break or need repair around the house. The staff that works there is never too busy to help you out. When you ask someone a question you almost always get a helpful answer because the person you're asking has a wealth of knowledge, unlike the big box stores where you often get the "uh this isn't my section, let me get someone who works here" run around. There's nothing flashy or grand about this place. It's a solid little hardware store staffed with people who actually give a crap about helping you out. Ok..so maybe I paid a few cents more per nail. The staff here will approach you to see if you need assistance. They're very knowledgeable and patient. Jim helped me find a way to connect two shorter water lines together and my dishwasher is up and running again thanks to his help and advice. The parts were less expensive than the big home center that lacks this kind of service and expertise. The parking is convenient. I save time when I shop here. read more

That's why I love this place, you don't get a stupefied, "I don't know" like a lot of other places. I've been a customer since the early 80's. They really are great at having hard to find things. Very fair pricing. The woman at the registers are not exactly mrs. Personalities,. I LOVE this hardware store. 1) It's the one store I know my kids won't mind running into with me as they get to visit with the parrot 2) It's the one store that I can call to check their inventory and talk to someone who actually CARES about earning my business (I've twice called for obscure lightbulbs and both times they've had them--when no one else has--and put them aside for me). There's nothing my husband likes less than me sending him out on a wild goose chase for replacement cafe style light bulbs on the day before Thanksgiving. Eric at Woods Ace Hardware came through for me (and my thankful hubby) by checking his back stock and calling me to confirm that he has them. Thank you, Eric! This is a quaint little hardware store, convenienty located, and well-stocked for store of its size. The stock personnel can be found in the aisles and are extremely knowledgeable. It's a shame the cashiers, three women on the one day I was there, weren't very pleasant. The cashiers are all arranged at the entrance of the store. I clearly saw there were no customers being waited on, yet not a single person thought to welcome or acknowledge me. I received a very cold dry reception upon checkout as well. I was neither greeted nor asked how my shopping experience was. The cashier simply rang me up. Quite frankly, I've been better received at the nearby, larger warehouse stores and that is a shame. read more

i only go to this place because it is local...if i am in the area of home depot or lowes, i would much rather go there. the two women cashiers at this place are fat slobs with no respect for customers. they never put a smile on and are generally rude. most of the floor staff are nice, but they are also sarcastic at the same time. Not the cheapest prices, but ill pay if i have to. a really annoying parrot that is always squaking "dave" or something... pretty good selection of stuff, although by looking at the amount of dust and fading on some of the products, i can only imagine that it has been there for a few years. this place is more of a mom and pop shop...wouldnt highly recommend it but if you need something quick, this place will do read more
