I have gotta big ole woody for Woody's Café. That's saying a lot, considering I am a city guy, who normally does drive-bys through Oaktown. This café is not chi-chi, like the places in Laurel Village and Pacific Heights, where ladies can be spotted in Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks, perfectly coiffed with a coffee in their hand. Instead the diversity of people here I find more welcoming. What turns me on about this place is that it truly is a down-to-earth local café that serves my needs. Food-wise: Delicious grilled cheese sandwich, tuna melt, and turkey panini sandwich with tasty ailoli. Drink-wise: Baristas serve great cappuccino, soy/vanilla latte and chai. Ambiance-wise: Clean and relaxing décor with soft music in the background. Convenience-wise: Free wi-fi and a clean bathroom. Some customers do their laundry next door or catch a flick across the street. Safety-wise: Kensington laptop locks to avoid jackers, in case you need to go to the bathroom. Cool people hang out here. I'm always skeptical when coming to Oakland but this place is located near Lake Merrit so it was okay. Like many parts of Oakland, its usually street parking, which is where I parked, thankfully, right across the street from it. However, if you're lucky enough, you can find a private lot to park at, close by. Like many others have noted on yelp, it is attached to the laundromat, but they have their own entrance. You don't need to go through the laundromat to get inside and they have a separating wall. The café isn't huge, just a few tables around but when I went, it wasn't busy. I ordered a small frap coffee and a regular bagel with cream cheese which cost damn near $10! The coffee was good and the bagel was a regular plane bagel which together, should NOT cost almost $10...I think I was more surprised of how much that bagel cost, almost a $5 bagel. I'm not trying to be cheap but they're not Starbucks... The people who were working did not speak very good English (they're Asian) so it was a little hard to understand, especially when its your first time there. You also want to pay attention when you're waiting for your food because they don't asks for names, they just call out the order. Pay attention because it's hard to understand them... Other than that, the place is A-OK in my book. If I were to meet a study group in Oakland again, I'd come here...if not, Starbucks always suffice. read more

Warning - this review is unequivocally biased, with that said, you've been told. So as everyone knows I am a Peets coffee die-hard fan - I happened to end up in Woody's as my friend who happened to be my coffee-date that morning was trying to "hide" from a few people at our local Peet's. The coffee was OK - definitely not the Peets taste that my buds are accustomed to. I ordered a soy latte - it wasn't bad at all. Woody's earned 3 stars for these: - Customer service - ambiance - neighborhood independently owned coffee house. Its not like the workers are not friendly, but they are incredibly slow. It pains my heart to sit and wait for a tea latte and bagel - no toast, no cream cheese. They spend more time talking to people about crap I don't care about than actually serving people. If you want to keep the staff lean - that's great, by all means do so. I am sitting at Woody's for the first time, on their free wi-fi, a tall glass of Obama blend coffee and a criossant with turkey, egg and cheese while waiting for my tire to be replaced across the street @ Wheelworks. (Speaking of which - don't drive across railroad tracks @ Jack London Square. If you hit the tracks just right, they will gash your tires. ) The alternate is for me to go to Merritt Bakery, deal with the servers yelling at each other, filthy bathroom and the safe choice of food I order - ham and cheese sandwich. So, what's wrong with this picture? My tax $ spent on trying to rescue them? Me having to choose a safe choice of food at a restaurant? ALL OF IT! Anyway, sorry for the rant. I'm glad wheelworks recommended me to hang out at Woody's. Service is great, coffee is amazing, stable wi-fi (free of course) and plenty of outlets. To top it off, my breakfast sandwich is good - fresh ingredients including the croissant (with grill marks, from their panini machine, real scrambled eggs, nice turkey slices and cheese.) Folks, quit going to Star$%^ks and come on over. We need to patronize these places more often. I suppose if I don't have a washer and a dryer at home, I will be frequenting this place more often, as I would also be doing my wash next door, at of course, Woody's Laundramat. This place is absolutely horrible! My bf and I wanted to get refreshing drinks on this hot day, and the drinks were no good! We ordered the iced caramel latte, and the caramel was sitting on the bottom of the cup. I used to be a barista, and when I would make an iced caramel latte, I would stir the caramel and espresso together and then pour it over the iced milk. The green tea smoothie was good for the first couple of sips, but then it melted and tasted bland. The mango smoothie was too sweet for my taste and completely filled to the rim of the cup. The lid on the mango smoothie wasn't completely on because it was so full, so it spilled on my shirt. The customer service was extremely bad. You can tell the barista/cashier hates her job and she gave soo much attitude to my bf and I. We didn't try the food, but it looks delicious and fresh. Keyword: LOOKS!!! One of the new places I am hanging out in my hood. They are playing good tunes on the radio, Good Coffee and they do have ABC Baking Company's Gluten Free Cookies..... The folks who work here are super nice. The woman at the counter even offered to keep an eye on my laptop when I had to run over to check on my laundry @ Woody's Laundry (which is wonderfully placed right next door to the cafe)! And according to my boyfriend "the latte connoisseur" the latte's are a bit of perfection. I like to use this space as my "out of home" office space. I had some extra time before an appointment in the area and stopped in to Woody's Cafe based on other Yelp reviews. The place was clean, the staff was super friendly, and the other patrons were very pleasant. I ordered the Cafe con Panna and I wish I could say it was fantastic but it was really the most horrible espresso experience of my life. The 'con panna' was aerosol whipped cream which was a tiny bit disappointing, but when I tasted the espresso I was glad for the mound of it piled on my drink. The espresso was so bad I could only surmise that someone had mistakenly added cleaning fluid to the reservoir in the machine instead of water. I wouldn't recommend the coffee in this place, obviously, but I would probably visit again to try the food which has great ratings on this page. Of note.. in case you are apprehensive about the dual listing of this place as a laundromat and cafe with the same name, the cafe is a totally separate space right next door, so it's not like you're sitting IN the laundromat. read more

First of all, every time I'd ever done my laundry at Woody's, the staff always greeted me warmly... how the heck often does that happen at a laundromat?! Then the day that I walked in and turned a corner to head to the change machines and hit a wall, one of the staff ran over and started raving to be about the upcoming opening of the café. She couldn't stop! CUTE. So finally it's open and my husband and I walked over here one weekend for a little latte/laundry action and I was thrilled to see how well they've done with the place. It's freakin' gorgeous! And again, the staff is warm and enthusiastic. They couldn't possibly take more pride or find more enjoyment in their work (which, may I remind, is the running of a laundromat and a coffee shop) and it makes me really enjoy being here and want to come back often. So far I've only had their vanilla latte (happily served to me in my Wonder Woman mug) and their spinach salad. Both are fantastic. Mr. Espresso or not, they make it fab! We went here today while waiting for the Parkway Speakeasy Theatre's showing of Tell No One and it was actually pretty nice. The service was good, though I don't think the cashier and barista knew how to communicate effectively with one another. The drinks were good but a little overpriced. The place is small and was pretty packed today with people accessing the free WiFi and doing homework. In fact, I think that is one of the drawbacks of the place, the size. Keep in mind my ratings are relative to what you are eating. I.e. this is not a five/four star restaurant, but instead a decent cafe. I can't review the coffee - yet. I must admit I am addicted to Rooz's lattes across the street and it will be hard for me to want to branch out. I even buy their coffee by the pound LOL. That being said, I had a really good turkey panini sandwich here, with - as other reviewers have pointed out - a really good aioli. The sandwich is large - I was glad I shared it! We also ordered a mango smoothie. A bit sweet for me - but I've always shy-ed away from really sweet drinks. Over all.... I like the sandwiches here better than Rooz, but Rooz holds my heart for coffee. One odd thing to note: I sat on the bench during the wall and feel like I was vibrating the entire meal. Parking is easy, a good place to work out of (I work remote so I know), coffee is strong and food is yummy. Woody's Cafe is my home away from home. I usually order the almond milk cappuccino and the bacon breakfast panini (add veggies). This review isn't so much about the food (although everything is yummy) as much as it is about the comforting feeling and how safe it feels to join them for a cup of coffee. A for effort with a limited menu. I don't drink coffee myself but a member of the group we ate with said the cappuccino was great. Loved the attitude of the staff. Any establishment should get extra points for wifi. Easy to overwhelm them if you go in with orders to go for a group as only one guy was actually making the sandwiches. We were just passing through but I can certainly understand the gratitude of people in this neighborhood where there did not appear to be an alternative for lunch in sight. I'm here pretty much four times a week working away on some project or studying or holding meetings with people. They don't mind you staying an extra long time working away on your computer. Staff is great and friendly (and Jessica and I share Taiwanese descent... so there's that homeland connection). Rob and Steve run the place with a cool, laid-back vibe. I'm totally down with this place because they clearly care about the community. They've supported my church's neighborhood events, and you'll find Woody's at Lake Neighbors Association block parties and holding art shows of their own. You can find local community characters chilling here too. Desi from Community Rejuvenation Project basically makes this his office. Check out his mural right across the street on the old Parkway Theater. Rock on, Woody's. My allegiance is to you. read more

I usually go to Woody's laundromat next door to do my laundry and one day as I was there I noticed a paper on the wall that said they had a cafe next door that sale sandwiches, coffee, etc so I decided to give it a try since I haven't had anything to eat yet. I really like how they decorated the place. It looks very cozy and relaxing. They played some kind of jazz music which was very soothing. They also have wi-fi. The staffs there were very very friendly. When I looked at the menu than their prices, I thought it was a bit expensive for the sandwiches. Well personally I think sandwiches that are over $6 are overpriced because you can make your own sandwiches under that price. I ordered the Hot tuna and cheese, it came with a lil bit of spinach salad on the side. Paid close to $8. When my sandwich was done and I took one bite, I was pleasantly surprised! It was DELICIOUS! I had to tell my bf right away since he does his laundry there too haha. So about a week later he had to do his laundry we went over to the cafe and ordered the same thing I had ordered. I've been coming to Woody's for a while now. I like the idea of a local coffeeshop with a neighborhood vibe....BUT....Woody's is way overpriced for what it is. I just paid 4 bucks for a grilled chesse sandwhich and they used greasy American cheese and too much of it. I can't even eat it it's so gross. Everything on the menu is overpriced, and not even tasty. If the prices were lower and the food better, I'd give them more stars. But thats just me. read more

Woody's Cafe are THE trendsetter's for Cafes! Their coffee is amazing and I would never waste my time walking into a Starbucks or a Pete's coffee. Woody's Cafe has an open mic nite where local comedians, artists, singers, poets, and authors come in and showcase their talent. This type of environment that Woody's is creating does create a unity in the area and the environment is extremely inviting, calming, and warm. Woody's also sponsors various local artists which allow artists to come in and show their artwork by being given an opportunity to hang up and showcase their art on the Cafe's walls. Right now an artist by the name of Momoko has her work up and it is awesome. Their food is great and their coffee is amazing!! If you haven't checked out the place you are missing out. LOOOVE IT!!:) My 4 1/2 year old also loves it. Our favorite sandwich is the Hot Tuna Panini.
