Here's what we ordered: Steamed Pork XLB (4/5): xlb was juicy and steaming hot, but the steamed pork was slightly harder than I would've liked. Glutinous Rice with Pork in Bamboo (2/5): was presented in such a nice way in a bamboo dish, but the pork had a very strong unpleasant gamey aftertaste. All the pork were also very fatty. Glutinous rice was average. Fried Buns with Pork (2.5/5): the dough was so thick and chewy, and there were barely any meat in the bun. My friend comes here often and said the XLBs were better than DTF. Really? What XLBs could be better than the famous DTF? I didn't believe it until I tried it. Yes, the XLBs are better for these reasons: it was bigger, there was more soup in the dumpling, and more meat in the dumplings. Definitely delicious! We also got fried rice, green beans, spicy dumpling, walnut prawns, spicy beef soup, and a beef & shrimp chow fun. All were delicious. I really enjoyed the spicy beef soup. They made it well and the beef was so tender. The walnut prawns were huge. I know it's basic but it's really good, especially with rice. There are some places that may do certain dishes better like xiaolongbao but this restaurant's menu is pretty well rounded and has a decent price point. Super yummy pork soup dumplings. Honestly was a little bit mind blown! The dumplings were larger than normal and super juicy! We also ordered the pork sticky rice and it was super yummy too. We arrived Saturday around 11:30AM and were greeted and seated immediately upon arrival. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining. We opted to dine indoor as it was sprinkling outside and the interior space is extremely tight/limited. We ordered the following: - hot and sour soup ($12.95) to start which yielded 7 servings - steamed pork XLB ($9.95) which were extremely juicy and flavorful, and dare I say, better than Din Tai Fung (especially for the price) - Szechuan chili oil wonton ($9.95) - braised tofu ($14.95) which was still nice and soft on the inside - beef chow fun ($15.95) which had a great charred wok flavor, but very little protein - house specialty glutinous rice with pork in bamboo ($19.95). The war wonton soup was exactly what it should be. I also sampled the bacon fried rice. It was very good. I do miss the cubed pork style, but this will do. The only downside is that the patio tables outside, which are lovely, have a lattice top with openings so I spilled soup and rice all over my pants. XLB is aka "Xia Long Bao". Don't question me on why I need to use an acronym to explain an acronym. In Chinese it literally means "little dragon bun". No it is not made with baby dragon meat so don't worry. My perception is that it got that name because dragons breathe fire and when you stick a hot XLB in your mouth you literally burn your mouth from the hot soup that explodes onto your tender tongue and then you exhale with a puff of hot steam like a dragon to relieve yourself from the 2nd degree pain. Despite this anticipated exercise so many people still love these little steamed buns. So when you open up a restaurant that literally has "XLB" as the first letters you are sure to capture folks that love them. They have both the steamed and the pan-fried option. Try both and see which one you like better. I found this place has them better than Din Tai Fung. They are bigger and cheaper since they don't have to pay for the fancy location or the franchise name. Besides XLBs, there are some Yelpers favorite dishes such as the pork belly that is served inside a cutout bamboo tube, the fried pumpkin with salted egg yolk, Dan Dan noodles, and my absolute favorite--the smoked duck. There are only a few tables inside so they will most likely seat you outside so dress accordingly. The parking lot is pretty small but there are more spots past Vardy's so it's not horrible. Like all Chinese restaurants service is basically them dropping off your food so don't expect them to check up on you. It's just basic good Shanghainese cuisine which is primarily noodle or carb-based steamed goodies. The wonton soup isn't the soup I'm used to eating. This was pork wonton with spicy broth. Not a lot of broth. It's not a meaty wonton but I think that's just the way this one is made. Freshly made to order XLB?? Yes please! These XLB are some of the best I've had in the Bay, right when you are seated they ask if you would like to order XLB as they make it fresh. Juicy and flavorful, the XLB are a must here. XLB Kitchen came up in our Yelp search and we decided to try it out. XLB has both indoor and outdoor seating, we liked the cooler comfort of the outdoor umbrella-covered patio in October. Still warm but not oppressively hot. Ordered XLB, Sliced Rice Noodles with Pork and Preserved Veggies, and Half Order of Smoked Duck. - XLB comes six to an order and had a unique taste to their soup filling. It's a bit sweeter than other places but very good. Skins did not break. - 1/2 Smoked Duck, cut into many pieces, smoky and it looked like more than half a duck. Good taste although it could be a little lighter on the salt. - Sliced Rice Noodles, can't go wrong with this dish... was good, although preserved veggies is an acquired taste. Service was attentive. Still serving excellent XLB with extremely fast service and plenty of shaded outdoor seating. Makes it even better that there's easy parking around for a more casual dinner. All our food came out so fast we almost didn't have room for it all! The fresh and flavorful fare here is quite hard to beat, and now their XLB has my brother's seal of approval (and he's quite picky about his XLB quality). This time around was my brother's first time since I found this spot when he wasn't around. Trying some of their other non-XLB fare, we generally found it quite tasty though pared back on the spiciness enough that it was pretty much all fine for those less spicy inclined (great for introducing those flavors). ==Szechuan Chili Oil Wonton [4/5]== An interestingly different take on the wontons since they're normally served in oil rather than a broth + oil, and also normally without veggies on top. Wontons were delicious, but the cute part is the veggies help make the wontons not "too" spicy but still reasonably flavorful (because they absorb a lot of the oil), so it's a bit more accessible as a dish. Still works out quite well even if it ends up tasting rather different than I expected. My only critique is that the chili oil didn't quite have a full aromatic range (still tasty, but not perfect). ==Lamb w/ Green Onion [5/5]== Quite tasty with plenty of onions of all sorts (red, green, yellow) and fresh veggies all around. Lamb was nice and bouncy, with plenty of flavor. No real complaints about this one. ==XLB [5/5]== Still full marks for their namesake as it is quite well deserved. Quality is still the same as before: a lovely blend of porkiness and a hint of sweetness packed in a not-too-thick skin. My brother ate loads of soup dumplings growing up, so that he's also saying these are pretty good in his book speaks to their quality too. ==Eggplant w/ Hot Garlic Sauce [4.5]== I personally would have preferred this a bit more seasoned, as the sauce was a smidge muted on salt/spicy fronts, but texture-wise extremely on point. Eggplant was deliciously moist with a good bite (albeit rather hot) all the way through and the sauce coated it pretty well. The food here was a total disaster. Red flag number 1: if you're name is XLB Kitchen instead of the Chinese 小笼包, you already know it is going to be a rough one. Red flag number 2: if you're name is XLB Kitchen, you're 小笼包 BETTER be the the best item on the menu. But instead you are given the thinnest wrapped 小笼包 and pork with a weird taste to it. But that's not all, because everything else was just as bad. The 葱油饼 had a weird after taste, almost like it was undercooked. The Combination Fried Rice tasted really bad because it was super bland. The chicken in the Fried Rice was barely seasoned and lacked immeasurable amount of flavor. The 红烧牛肉面's noodles were soggy on arrival, and lacked spice and flavor when it came to taste. The smoked duck was way too salty and EXTREMELY overpriced for that quality. Most importantly however was the tea was in a METAL TEAPOT which messes up the tea's taste with a little metal taste. This can ruin the quality of the tea significantly and gave me and my friends an unpleasant experience. I hope you guys take this advice to CLOSE DOWN THIS RESTAURANT. read more

While the XLB skin was a bit thicker than I would have liked, they did have a generous amount of filling and soup. Other dumplings 3/5 The pan fried buns and the wonton in chili sauce were not to my liking. The reason for a overall solid four star rating are in the other dishes: Smoked Tea duck 5/5 moist yet flavorful. Generous portion. I would come back to this restaurant for this dish alone! This place is okay, I wasn't a big fan of anything except the XLBs. They give you tea to go with your meal, it's just a tea bag in a kettle, not real tea leaves. The water is only warm and not boiling hot either, so the tea flavor didn't even soak in when drinking. The XLBs were good, had a good amount of filling and soup. The flavor was good and the skin was not too thick. The Dan Dan noodles were okay. They're not spicy even though there is a lot of peppercorn in it. The wontons were a bit of a let down. The meat to filling ratio was terrible. There was a tiny ball of meat to and a huge wrap. The chili oil was more of a chili broth. There wasn't much flavor to it either. The meat inside the wonton was good though, just not a good ratio to the wrapper. The bamboo pork sticky rice was my least favorite dish. Immediately when it was placed on the table I was off put by the scent. I thought it might've just been the bamboo container, but one I took a bite it was the same putrid scent I smelled. I was expecting this dish to taste like the lotus leaf chicken sticky rice, but it was not even close. I found out the bamboo was what I really didn't enjoy. The pork bits tasted pretty good, a standard five spice taste. And the rice was good too, though a lot of it I couldn't even eat since the bamboo flavor was too strong for me. Can I just say that these were the BIGGEST Xiao Long Baos I've ever had IN MY LIFE!!! They were so massive they're actually bigger than the soup spoons!! They were pretty great, there was a lot of meat filling, def worth a try. Honestly everything we ordered was pretty delicious. The Garlic Pickled Cucumbers were refreshing, the Chicken Wings were seasoned evenly, the Spicy Wontons weren't that hot. It had more of a Szechuan malaa numbing spice, but it came with veggies which was a nice surprise! The Pork Belly Sticky Rice was honestly probably the star dish, there was plenty of meat to rice ratio, it was so rich and savory. Honestly kinda drooling as I reminisce about it LOL! First and foremost, you need to know that regulars come here a lot and just about everyone dining here speaks Mandarin and comes for the authentic XLBs -- perfectly thin wrappers, in fact so thin that a couple of dumplings ripped and the soup had already spilled out. I look forward to a good panfried pork bun and few places do them right -- here the bun is tasty chewy with not too much dough but the filling was very small and not flavorful or juicy at all, so that was disappointing. Glutinous rice with pork belly in bamboo is a popular dish that a lot of people order. The presentation is very unique but if you're sensitive to bamboo or sweetness, you might not like this one. The pork is extra buttery soft with a good amount of sticky rice. I brought leftovers home but kiddo and husband did not like the bamboo flavor at all so do take note. Smoked duck was very dry in some part with not a whole lot of fat. This is a nice change from roast duck but if you don't like fry meats, this might not be your item. Lastly the huge garlic ribs looked really appetizing but there isn't a whole lotta meat and once both the duck and ribs got cold, they did not taste good at all. In fact, the husband thought leftovers were from some low budget Americanized Chinese buffet... If you're in the area and want to hang out with a friend to try some authentic XLBs, come and dine in leisure at their outdoor seating. This place is a small restaurant that specializes in xlb and also has other Chinese dishes that are equally as delicious. I highly recommend ordering the xlb's, glutinous rice w/ pork in bamboo, and Shanghai baby bok choy. Let's start with the xlb's - the dumpling wrap held everything together while being thin and light. Each dumpling had a good amount of soup and the pork was extremely flavorful. Make sure you eat each bite with vinegar and ginger. The glutinous rice w/ pork in bamboo is another speciality dish. It has a generous portion of tender pork over a bed of rice that is covered in their special sauce. The bok choy tasted like it was cooked in a wok with garlic. FOOD The food was pretty good. It's not the best nor the worst I've had. XLBs is definitely the star of the show. It was well seasoned, juicy, and it did remind me of the XLBs I've had in Shanghai. I personally thought it was a bit on the sweeter side but nonetheless was a solid main dish. My next favorite has to be the Fuqi Feipian, which is like a spicy beef assortments and they way they prepared it hit home right away for me. No other restaurants in the bay that I've been to put peanuts in this dish and it just adds an additional flavor and texture to it and it's freaking awesome!!! The other two dishes (string beans and pork) was pretty decent. Nothing too spectacular about it. Those two dishes are my personal favorite at any restaurant so I'd say my standard are pretty high for it (maybe I'm just numb to how good it is haha) SERVICE The service it self was pretty decent too. They were really nice and checked in on us regularly. I do want to point out that they were able to come out with our food within 10ish mins of ordering which is super fast. A huge plus on their speed and execution. I do want to mentioned that some of the tea cups and utensils didn't seem to be washed completely so you do need to make sure to do a double take on your utensils. I was here for lunch. I had heard about the schejwan recipe and hence this was a good place to taste it. I ordered the fried chicken rice with beef and a sweet pumpkin cake. I was a satisfied customer as the food tasted delicious. They look like a small restaurant but when you go inside you see there's outdoor seating at the side as well. There's free parking, and plenty of space to sit. I'm definitely going to come and try other dishes from their menu. The service was okay as we had to remind them of the menu card, but otherwise it was okay. read more

Wow, I finally found a restaurant with good XLB! (I mean, based on the restaurant name, I would imagine it should live up to the name lol). I've been so disappointed by many dumpling restaurants and I'm constantly on the hunt for a good and consistent dumpling restaurant in the Bay Area. We came on a Thursday afternoon and got seated in the back outdoor patio right away. We ordered: 1. Steam pork bun (the xlb) 10/10 $8.95 - for a good xlb, it's all about the skin and soup to me. The skin for these soup dumplings were excellent. It wasn't thick and chewy like many other dumpling restaurants. I bit right into the soft & thin skin and the soup had a nice flavor with the filling. I'd definitely come back for this dish. 2. Pot sticker 10/10 ($8.95) - not the best presentation, but I loved this dish. The filling is different than many other restaurants I've tried. I love that it has mushrooms in it and the flavor of the skin tasted like it was right off the wok. (Yum - crispy & flavorful) 2. Glutinous rice with pork and bamboo 9/10 ($17.95) - unlike many other Asian dishes! I swear I've only had something like this in Asia. Great presentation, portion, and taste. Must try.
