This review is strictly based upon our lunch delivery via Uber Eats. I ordered the Beef Bulgogi Bento Box. The Korean style beef was okay, but I needed to add eel sauce for some extra flavor. The 1/2 California Roll, gyoza and side salad with ginger dressing were fresh and delicious. I enjoyed the sushi roll the most. My two coworkers both ordered different types of sushi rolls. One had fish and the other was a sweet potato roll. The restaurant packed both of the rolls in the same box, which resulted in a mess, as the sauce on one roll got mixed in with the other roll. Again, this was take-out, so I am sure we would have had a different experience if we ate in the restaurant. I would like to try this restaurant again. Next time will be a dine-in meal instead of take-out. read more

Yama Japanese Restaurant has been around for a long time, though they have changed their location a couple of times. This was my first time visiting Yama and three things popped up on my mind as to how they were able to stay in business for so many years. 1) The warm hospitality of the owner chef who was Korean, still tending to his sushi bar and his customers after working behind the sushi bar himself for decades in his younger years. 2) The beautifully and intricately designed interior that reminded me of upscale looking Izakaya dining space that was still affordable. 3) The fresh quality ingredients that they use and in house made salad dressing was a nice touch. The sushi was decent. There was too much rice used and too much going on top of the sushi pieces for my liking, but I still managed to finish them. The servers were welcoming and the manager was very hospitable checking up on me to make sure I had everything that I needed. Will definitely recommend this place to others. The parking spaces were limited and it was crowded on a Friday night around 830pm. read more

First timer at Yama Japanese Restaurant in Delray. The vibe was upbeat, yet casual and comfortable. We got seated very quickly and the service started right away. Friendly, knowledgeable servers. Ice cold Sapporo was poured and Naruto Maki was so refreshing and light- the perfect starting point. A Hamachi Jalapeño Roll and a Rainbow Roll were our entrees of choice to share and we sat the bar high with those! Let's just say that we couldn't have been more delighted with the freshness and flavor! Melt-in-your-mouth and perfectly crafted pieces of art- simply some of the best sushi I've experienced. I enjoyed several Japanese dishes on a recent evening at the sushi counter. Normally, a complimentary amuse buche is handed over as a greeting when you sit at the sushi bar. Not here. Why? We started with fried pork dumplings. I usually like them pan-fried, but my husband ordered them incorrectly, and they came out piping hot, juicy, and crispy. I remarked that fully fried is scrumptious if prepared properly and not overcooked. I did wish the dipping bowl of gyoza sauce were bigger. It was hard to get the amount I wanted. Next, I had a sashimi appetizer prepared by an outstanding sushi chef. Large, chilled slices of salmon (buttery and silky in texture and taste), toro, and yellowtail were heaven on a plate for me. I often find that sushi bars (not the Omakase kind popping up all over town) are lackluster and failing in freshness and precision in their execution. Not so here. I ordered amaebi sashimi, raw, sweet shrimp normally plated with flash-fried heads (my favorite part of the dish), and the small shrimp bodies separated. Yama's amaebi shrimp was not the teeny sweet, small variety I am accustomed to, and the temperature was not cool enough to my liking, but I enjoyed the dish, nonetheless. Next, we shared yakitori and negimaki. Both dishes were outstanding. The yakitori was sKewered with scallion and doused with a sweet, thickened soy glaze. The negimaki was prime beef rolled around the scallion cut, similar to a sushi roll with a thin, mildly sweet sauce beneath the beef rolls. Each dish came out slowly but in a good way to savor each plate. Some diners want their food to come out quickly. I feel differently about this. I enjoyed the dining experience. I liked the look and feel of the atmosphere. There were tables of Japanese patrons and families, young 30-somethings, and plenty of banter that allowed you to hear your conversation. We imbibed in 2 large hot sakes (next time, I'd go for a cool variety), one large Asahi beer, ate a sashimi appetizer, the amaebi, a spicy tuna roll with extra crunchies, and the two hot appetizers. Our bill came to $111. Not terrible for how much we ate. I was full, but if pushed, I could have eaten through my wall of pain. read more

I was invited to join a friend here. I am so glad she suggested it. This restaurant is located in an area of downtown Delray i have not explored much. There are several restaurants nearby and a parking area up ramp behind the stores and restaurants. The restaurant has indoor seating and outdoor curbside seating which is very lovely. The interior is low light inviting and open. Our server was friendly and welcoming. I ordered a shrimp tempura "Dragon Tail" roll and my friend ordered the raw "Red Dragon"roll. I loved my roll. It was crunchy, sweet and sooo fresh avocado. My friend was also very happy with her selection. My Thai ice tea was also sweet and delicious. I will be returning here for more taste of their menu. I thought the tuna tare tare was good to start & I also tried the tom yum which was flavorful. The rolls were good but I feel pretty average but, the plating for everything was very pretty! The food was great! I'd definitely go back again. The service was alright as the waitress left our food sitting there for a while before bringing it out. The table was also extremely shaky so we had to brace it with our legs so the food would not move around. The indoor portion of the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean. Yikes! What a turn for the worse. I used to like this spot. It's a nice location, chill vibes in pineapple grove, and the food was always good, not great. Not tonight. We got the shrimp shumai dumplings, edamame and seaweed salad to start. All of it was all just ok. (For awesome edamame go to KaPow) Then we got our sushi rolls. As the food started to come out we were served some tempura. I was confused because I didn't remember my wife ordering that so we asked the other tables next to us if they'd ordered it. And they said no. Then the serve came out and we told her we didn't order it and she took it away complaining that she now couldn't take it to another table. "Now I can't serve it" like yeah once food touches down you can't just pick it up and take it to someone else. That's gross!!!!! We ate most of our sushi and asked for the check. I was shocked that we were asked to pay for the servers mistake. Especially because she took it off the table! Like if you're gonna charge us for some food we didn't order at lease let us keep it or put it in a to go box for us! What a bizarre experience. Not only do we dine out often but I was in the restaurant industry for many years and this is just Bad Business! So short sighted. So now I have a bad taste in my mouth from tonight's dinner. Yama was okay and certainly not bad but really quite average. Service was fine and the dining room is basic and dark though somewhat comfortable. We started off with Shrimp Dumplings and this item is what really what took the rating down. Dumplings of course taste better when made to order but these were terrible and not just because they might have been prepared earlier it's because they seemed to be a frozen commercial product. A salmon roll though basic was better than most. Next we ordered a Sushi of the day Special and it was a good assortment of nigiri that was presented nicely. First impression: The restaurant is located on a nice strip near Atlantic. We started off with the teriyaki calamari and a side salad. For entrees, my boyfriend had the 2nd and 2nd roll and the Mexican roll and I had the beef bulgogi. To finish off, we ordered the fried ice cream. Atmosphere: Fun, clean, and not too crowded. The environment had good vibes and a nice theme. Service: They were a little busy but the server and busser were attentive. Food: The teriyaki calamari was delicious! Very hot and fresh. The side salad was ok. I couldn't tell if it was a ginger dressing or not because it seemed watered down. The salad was very simple. For entrees, the 2nd and 2nd was easily an 8/10, Mexican roll was 5/10, and the bulgogi was an 8/10. Finally for dessert, the fried ice cream was big and yummy. 10/10:) A friendly warning though, they don't do any side dishes. My bulgogi comes with a side of steamed white rice and I couldn't change it to a side of fried rice. Overall, we had a good experience and will be coming back soon. They don't have a huge menu but they do have a good selection of food and we're excited to try other options. read more

The food is excellent, Thai rather than Japanese, but nice all the same. The service, equally, was very good again with a Thai rather than Japanese bent. So, good food and great service so why would I consider awarding only three stars? Well it could have been a lot cleaner, but our main problem was the noise. It was hideous in that we needed to shout to each other, to be partially understood. Perhaps we should try sitting outside but there is a nice Japanese restaurant across the road. Got Yama for takeout. Super fast service and the food was fantastic. I got the Tom Yum soup with chicken. The broth was delicious and nice and warm. I thought they could have put a little more chicken (especially for it being $9), but overall I liked it. My friend got the Pad Thai which was fine. I have had better Paid Thai and she was dying from the spice. My other friend got the fried rice--there was a nice variety of proteins and it was creamy and delicious. Obviously we did not dine in but the ambience seemed beautiful. Tons of seating outside and not too loud. Of course, the streets of Delray are a beautiful view for dinner. The inside of the restaurant smelled strongly of fish, so I would suggest you sit outside. Overall, I liked Yama. read more

My plane trip home was a crazy one with delays. So, by the time I arrived in Delray, most restaurants were closing at 9:30 or so. A quick drive down my favorite Pineapple Grove strip showed Yama still opened. We walked in and was greeted pleasantly. Restaurant was closing and started clearing up. However, we perused the menu and made our orders within a minute because we were starving! Our orders came out quickly. They were very accommodating. We ate while the staff sat down to eat at their table. We felt like family. I will definitely be back with such great service. I've only sat one other time at the sushi bar on a date. Fantastic accidental find. Was staying at The Ray across the street and saw this place, looked busy and had tons of people coming and going with to go orders. In my experience, that speaks to great quality at reasonable prices! Took a look at the menu and figured this was a great one to try. Started with the seafood pancake which was clearly fresh - sauce was super delicious. Then moved to the panang curry which reminded me of pumpkin curry without the pumpkin but the same general flavor. Absolutely phenomenal! Mom had the shrimp pad Thai and had to physically stop herself from eating the entire portion because it was so good. I had a draft beer because it's been so long since I've imbibed and hey, it's Christmas Eve, why not? Sapporo draft beer and curry is an excellent combination, by the way! I'd come back to Yama in a heartbeat, and encourage anyone else in the area for good or visiting to check it out. read more

Been going to this place regularly for over ten years. Restaurant consistently serves great Japanese and Thai food. They have unique seating where you can sit in booths and sit on the "floor" Japanese style which is really cute and intimate if that is the experience you are looking for. So I've been to Yama several times and I've been meaning to do a review for quite a while. Yama is set in the quaint Pineapple Grove District right off of Atlantic. This is one of my favorite areas and Yama is one of my favorite restaurants to go to. You go to Yama if you want really fresh authentic sushi. Make sure to sit at the sushi counter if there is space. If you want something really special, sit at the counter and order chef's choice. If you do that, Yama (the owner) will select what is made for you and will make all or most of it himself. Yama is a real old-school master sushi maker who has been in the business for decades. On top of it, he's really friendly and will tell you about the items he is making. For my birthday my friend took me to Yama and we ordered the chef's special. Yama started us off with one of his signature hand rolls. If you have not had one of these before, make sure to try one. Yama picked out two additional rolls for us and they were both great (see the pictures). Of course, since Yama chose them for us, I forgot to ask what types they were (sigh). All I know is, they were all really delicious and fresh and needed to be savored slowly. A quick comment about the service. The service at Yama is always good. Most of the times we've gone, our waiter has been Jinji. Yama is his grandfather. Jinji is super friendly and will make sure you're taken care of. Also, if you need some spot on recommendations on what to order, Jinji definitely points you in the right direction. I'm obviously a big fan of Yama's because of the location, quality and authenticity of the food, the excellent service and because of Yama himself. Looked good because of the starts But my salmon Sashimi was iced as I took a bite. Also the spicy crab is whatever. Nice that they do happy hour I like my Lychee margarita.
